Virginia Surrency McCurdy, 94

Virginia Surrency McCurdy, 94, died Tuesday, March 2, 2010, at her home with her family present. The Tattnall County native had lived in Glennville all of her life. She was born May 15, 1915, to the late Joseph Brown Surrency and Nancy Durrence Surrency. She graduated from Glennville High school in 1931. She was a homemaker and the oldest member of the First Baptist Church of Glennville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Glanton McCurdy; one daughter, Joy McCurdy; two brothers, Kinch and Harry Surrency and two sisters, Lois Stanfield and Josephine Surrency.
She is survived by a daughter, Jayne and her husband, Buddy Bennett of Jesup; two sons, Jimmy and his wife Janis McCurdy of Glennville and Joe and his wife Ann McCurdy of Richardson, TX; eight grandchildren, Richard, Stetson, John and William Bennett, Jan Bennett Oliver, Lee McCurdy, Lisa McCurdy Barry and Whitney McCurdy; 23 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 5, 2010, from the chapel of Brannen - Kennedy Funeral Home, with Reverend Mike Howard and Reverend Bill Eller officiating. Burial followed in the Glennville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were grandsons and grandsons in law, Richard Bennett, Stetson Bennett, John Bennett, William Bennett, Lee McCurdy, Bert Oliver and Rob Barry.
Remembrances may be made to Ogeechee Area Hospice, P.O. Box 531, Statesboro, GA 30459.

Paul L. Austin, 74

Paul L. Austin, 74, passed away Wednesday, February 24, 2010, at Evans Memorial Hospital. The North Carolina native had lived in this area for many years.
He retired from Georgia Power Company as a lineman after 33 years of service. He loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman. He was a member of Ferry Road Baptist Church.
He survived by his wife, Patricia (Patty) Austin of Claxton; two sons, Eugene Austin of Springfield and Marshall Austin of Glennville; two daughters, Lisa Groff of Glennville and Jennifer Balentine of Claxton; three brothers, Tommy Austin and Jack Austin, both of Hickory, NC, Fred Austin of Mt. Morris, MI; 11 grandchildren, eight great - grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Ernest Austin, Josh Austin, Keith McLeod, Calvin Yeomans, Glenn Stanfield, and Tony Cason. Honorary pallbearers were Eldon Callaway, Sonny Kennedy, Rabun Sapp, Bud Chandler, Douglas Griffin, George Tanner, Joe Blaxton, Glenn Mosley, W.C. “Buck” Smith, and Jerome Bath.

Sarah Anne Berrum, three - month - old

Sarah Anne Berrum, three - month - old daughter of Kari Collier and Carlos Berrum, passed away Sunday, February 28, 2010, at Doctors Hospital of Tattnall.
Additional survivors include her sister, Adrianna Jane Berrum of Reidsville; maternal grandparents, Donna Ann Collier of Reidsville and Curtis Dean and Debra Collier of Claxton; paternal grandparents, Mary Ann Anderson and Manuel Juarez of Reidsville; maternal great grandparents, Edward and Faye Johnson of Lyons, Francis Johnson of Reidsville and Christine Sapp of Claxton; paternal great grandmother, Joyce Tatum of Collins; maternal great - great grandmother, Iris Collins of Lyons; special great aunt, Jane Daniel of Reidsville; special aunt, Rosie Gillis of Reidsville; other aunts, Kristin Collier of Reidsville, Kaytlin Collier of Lyons and Nikki Anderson of Reidsville and several other aunts and uncles.
Graveside funeral services were held Wednesday, March 3, 2010, sat Love’s Chapel Primitive Baptist Church cemetery with Brother Jay Martin officiating.

Eunice Lanier Callaway, 90

Eunice Lanier Callaway, 90, of the Hillview Community passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 2, 2010, at the Candler County Hospital. Born in 1919, she is the daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson and Mattie Lou Sapp Lanier of the Evergreen Community. A graduate of Abraham Baldwin College, she also attended Georgia Southern College and was a teacher at Hillview Elementary School for many years.
Being a homemaker was her greatest pleasure. Mrs. Callaway was a member of the Evergreen Baptist Church for 74 years where she served as pianist, Sunday school teacher, director of WMU and in many other positions.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David H. Callaway, who she married in 1949; sister, Louise Lanier West; brothers, Ashton, Wilton, J.T. and Horace Lanier; and a son - in - law, Robert Willson.
Survivors are her children, Fran C. and Jack Edwards of Valdosta, Lyneve C. Willson of Woodstock and Kenneth David and Judy Callaway of Hiram; grandchildren, Jennifer E. McLoughlin of Valdosta, Julie E. Wood (Alan) of Decatur, Casey Smith of Woodstock and Matthew Coward of Lawrenceville; great granddaughter, Isabel McLoughlin of Valdosta; sister, Vernon L. Anderson of the Evergreen Community; sister - in - law, Virginia T. Lanier of Claxton; special cousin, Janice Sapp of Collins who Eunice helped to raise, and who has provided loving home care to her for several years; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 5 at 11:00 a.m. at the Evergreen Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. John Geerdes. The body will lie in state one hour prior to service. Burial will be in the Anderson Church Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday evening, 6 - 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Dennis West, Tommy Lanier, Al Bland, Stan Fordham, Larry Anderson and Hal Powell. Remembrances may be made to the Evergreen Baptist Church Building Fund, POB 325, Cobbtown, GA. 30420.

James Lee Fate, 83

Mr. James Lee Fate was born to the late Hattie Brown and Jimmy Murphy on March 16, 1926 in Tattnall County. He was joined in Holy Matrimony to Mrs. Flora Mae Rawls in 1973. He departed this life on February 27, 2010, at the Doctors Hospital in Reidsville. A son preceded him in death Jimmy Lee Fate.
He is survived by his wife Mrs. Flora Mae Fate of Glennville; children, Eutawanda Wright, James Luther Fate, Wilbur Lee Fate, Cathalene Grant, Anna Marie Fate, Sharon Denise Day, Annette Deloris Daniel, Eloise Wanda Roberson, Johnny Lee Fate, Romena Johnson, Graylin Williams, Nathan Williams, Delaphine Nails, Matilda Robinson and Bernice Williams, and a host of grandchildren, great - grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at Beulah #1 Baptist Church in Mendes, with burial following in the Halltown Cemetery.
King and Son’s Funeral Home of Glennville, was in charge of the arrangements.

Eric “Jack” Moore, 76

Mr. Eric “Jack” Moore, age 76, died, February 24, 2010, at Toombs County Rehab Center, under the care of Community Hospice of Vidalia, after an extended illness. He was a native of Blue Ridge Community, living most of his life in the Lyons area. Jack was a retired U.S. Army Veteran, serving in the Korean War. He worked many years as a shipping clerk at Rosebud Manufacturing, and retired in Food Service with the Georgia Department of Corrections. His many hobbies included music, fishing, cooking, reading and most of all, sharing time with his grandchildren. Jack was Baptist by faith and a member of the First Baptist Church of Lyons. He was preceded in death by his parents; Dennis D. and Ola V. Moore, three sisters; Lucille Moore, Madeline Mosley, Mary McLendon, three brothers; Devon “Buddy” Moore, Hubert Moore and Herbert Moore.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Norma Sikes Moore of Lyons; two daughters and sons - in - law, Denise and Robbie Rogers of Lyons, Paula and Danny Krulic of Lyons; one brother, Dennis D. Moore Jr. of Dearing, GA; two sisters, Ora V. Winge of Lyons and O’Reeta Jones of Cordelle, GA. He has three grandchildren; Will Krulic, Maggie Krulic, and John Dennis Rogers. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services were held on Friday, February 26, 2010, from the Chapel of Jones - Stewart Funeral Home with Reverend Paul Moore and Reverend Dannie Williams officiating. Interment followed in the Lyons City Cemetery.
Jones Stewart Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Calvin Jeffery Odum, infant

Calvin Jeffery Odum, infant son of Kayla and Aaron Odum, died Tuesday, February 23, 2010, at East Georgia Regional Medical Center.
Other survivors include his maternal grandparents, Rodney and Cathy Boyett and Tommy and Angie Lanier; paternal grandparents, Jeff and Lynette Odum and Deliah and Rick Bryant; maternal great grandparents, Dean Boyett and the late Calvin Boyett and Betty Harrelson; paternal great grandparents, Sherrie and Doyle Moody, the late Merlie Thompson and Jackie and Roscoe Odum; aunts and uncles, Timmy Bolen, Jessica Lanier, Amanda Jacobs, Rebecca Bryant, Allen Thompson, Rachel Snellgrove, Kelly Rewis and Stevie Moyer.
Graveside funeral services were held Friday, February 26, 2010, at Old Anderson Church cemetery with Reverend Andrew Nelms officiating.

Richard Dawson Phillips, 71

Richard Dawson Phillips, son of Richard Denham Phillips and Rosalie Dawson Phillips, born May 2, 1938, died suddenly on February 25, 2010. He is a descendant of Joseph Jackson Martin and Eliza Swindel Martin of Taylors Creek. He graduated from the University of Georgia Lumpkin School of Law in 1963 after passing the bar and being admitted to practice law in 1962. He attended Georgia Southern College and was a member of the National Guard after graduating from Ludowici High School as president of his class and valedictorian in 1956. He was named to Phi Kappa Delta Legal Fraternity and held various offices in the Demosthenean Literary Society and was secretary of the Student Bar Association. He is a member of the American Bar Association; The Georgia Bar Association; the Association of Trial Lawyers of American and the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association. He has served as President of the Atlantic Judicial Bar Association. He was named to the outstanding young men of America in 1971; to the Community Leaders of America in 1972 and to Who’s Who in the South and Southwest in 1973 and the 1973 - 74 Edition of Community Leaders and noteworthy Americans. He served as clerk of the Long County Commissioners for 12 years and clerk of the City of Ludowici for six years until he opened his law practice in Ludowici. He also served a director and vice - President of the Long County Chamber of Commerce and Chairman of the Long County Health Department. He also advised the Long County School Board and the City of Ludowici. He was elected Judge of the State Court of Long County in 1964 and served in that position until his death, while running a busy law practice helping everyone who came by.
He is survived by his sister, Margaret Phillips Ruiz; daughters, Jennifer Jane Phillips Shatz, Amelia Terry Phillips Flynn and his wife, Hilda Jane Terry; as well as his grandchildren, Morgan Anne Phillips, Gabriella Elyssa Shatz, Alexandra Marie Flynn and Grace Devon Shatz.
Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church of Ludowici, Monday, March 1, 2010. Burial followed in the Hinesville Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Craig Kitchings, Randy Wilson, Lonnie Deloach, Andy Fuller, Jim Fuller and Chris Fuller. Honorary pallbearers were Becky Chambliss, Teresa Fowler, and the Phillips and Kitchings Law Office staff, Joseph Kitchings, Long County Sheriff, Cecil Nobles, Katie and Jay Smith, John Pirkle, Paul McGowan, Frank Middleton, Bob Pirkle, James Fuller, the Atlantic judicial Bar Association, the Mayor, Myrtice Warren, and the City Council of Ludowici as well as the Long County School Board and School Superintendent, Dr. Robert Waters.
He will be greatly missed by everyone whose lives he touched.

Randolph “Rabbit” Sharpe

Mr. Randolph “Rabbit” Sharpe, 60, of Reidsville, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, February 24, 2010, at the Community Hospice Center in Vidalia. He was born July 4, 1918, in Tattnall County to the late Kelly and Inolia Joyce Sharpe, both of whom preceded him in death.
He is survived by his loving sister, Katherine Sharpe, who took care of him; two brothers, Bobby Sharpe and Billy Sharpe, both of Reidsville; two favorite nieces, Danielle Byrd and Mary Ann Grant and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 6, 2010, at St. Phillips Missionary Baptist Church at 11:00, with burial following in the Ogden Mills Cemetery.
No wake services. Visitation will be held at King and Son’s Funeral Home on Friday, March 5, 2010, from 12:00 noon to 7:00 p.m.

Grace Sconyers Holton
Mrs. Grace Sconyers Holton, 74, of Soperton died Friday, January 16.
Mrs. Holton was born in Emanuel County and resided in Soperton. She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie Grady and Sallie Lee Brinson Sconyers, a sister, Inez Sheets, and a brother, Douglas Sconyers. She was married to the late Ronald Holton, Sr. She was a retired Supervisor with Ithaca Industries of Swainsboro and a member of Boiling Springs Baptist Church where she was a faithful member of the WMU.

Survivors include three sons, Doug (Cindy) Holton, Ronnie Jr., (Carla) Holton, and Steven Holton, all of Soperton; daughter, Lisa (Robbie) Byrd, Soperton; sisters, Hazel (Talmadge) Nasworthy, Helen (Jack) Center, and Joy (Woody) Nasworthy, all of Swainsboro; grandchildren, Allison, Drew, Jordie, and Danielle Holton, Hunter, Trevor and Josh Byrd, Cole and Megan Waters.

Services will be conducted in Boiling Springs Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Monday, January 19, with Rev. H. G. Ridgdill, Rev. Reland Morgan, and Tommy Corbin officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Sammons Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m., and may be reached at the home of Lisa and Robbie Byrd, 215 Central Drive, Soperton.

Flowers are acceptable or donations may be made to Boiling Springs Baptist Church, c/o Mrs. Maxanne Woolf, 13259 Hwy. #86, Soperton.

Jessie Raffield Wilkes
Mrs. Jessie Raffield Wilkes, 94 of Rockledge, died Wednesday, December 31, 2008.
Mrs. Wilkes was a lifelong resident of Laurens County and was preceded in death by her parents, William and Irma Collins Raffield; and her son, Julian Larry McLendon. She was a Retired School Teacher and a member of Union Baptist Church of Minter.

Survivors include her husband, Hubert Wilkes; a daughter and son - in - law, Dorothy and Paul Cafferty, of Quitman, Arkansas; a son and daughter - in - law, Jody and Maria Wilkes, of Rockledge; a daughter - in - law, Bettye McLendon, of Tampa, Florida; 4 grandchildren, Laura (Danton) Morris, of Adrian, Mystic Myrhical Wilkes, of Rockledge, Julie (Dan) Floen and Dianne (Randy) Gainforth, both of Tampa, Florida; 4 step - grandchildren, Mariah, Mirial and Dartonean Thompson, all of Rockledge, and Marcia Vowell, of LaGrange; 3 great - grandchildren, Calli Morris, Laurel Floen and Emily Gainforth; and 2 step - great - grandchildren, Jordan Morris and Kaylin Foskey.

Funeral: 2 p.m. Sunday, January 4 in Union Baptist Church with the Reverend Dahl McDermitt officiating.

Burial: Blue Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
