Lynn Davis

Lynn Davis, 70 of Monroe, died on Jan. 4, 2006, She was born in Cobb County on Oct. 13, 1935 to the late Virgil Henry Frey and the late Florence Mulkey Frey.

Surviving are: husband: John Arthur Davis, Monroe; daughter and son-in-law: Nancy and Greg Purves, Lawrenceville; son and daughter-in-law: Richard and Paula Davis, Lawrenceville; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Friday Jan. 6 at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with Dr. Thom Allen and the Rev. Hoyt Johnson officiating. Interment followed at Westlawn Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Davis Scott, Michael Scott, Marcus Chaffin, Trae Davis, Andy Davis and Chris Davis.

Meadows Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Pauline P. Hataway

Pauline P. Hataway, 95 of Monroe died December 29, 2005.

A native of Walton County, she was the daughter of the late Calvin R. and Ida Rowe Palmer. The widow of Orrin W. Hataway, she was a homemaker and was a member of Campton United Methodist Church.

Funeral services were held Dec. 31 in Campton United Methodist Church. The Rev. Geoff Grubbs and The Rev. Benson Bottoms officiated and interment was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: Shannon Broach, Steven Broach, Tony Gunnels, Ray Broach, Don Hataway, Brad Huff and Bryce Huff.

She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law: Linda and Thomas Parker and Dot and Alton Broach all of Monroe; daughters-in-law: Betty Hataway of Monroe and Joann Hataway of Athens; eight grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, ten great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by sons, Robert C. Hataway and Donald Hataway.

Arthur Bowick, Inc. Funeral Directors was in charge of arrangements.

Sarah Hazel Smith

Sarah Hazel Smith, 85 of Colbert, Ga. died on December 29, 2005

Mrs. Smith was a native of Oconee County, the daughter of the late Seab and Floy Eberhart Hardman. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Henry Ford Smith.

She was a member of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Wrightsville, Ga.

Mrs. Smith is survived by a son, Carl Smith of Athens; son and daughter-in-law: Calvin and Kitty Smith of Monroe; grandsons and wives: Michael and Amy Smith of Dacula, Lt. Cmdr. Bo and Nancy Palmer, Coronado, Calif.; Adam Palmer. Monroe; great-grandson: Jackson Palmer, Coronado, Calif.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 2, 2006 in the chapel of Bridges Funeral Home with The Rev. Royce McNeal officiating. Interment followed at the New cemetery in Washington County.

Flowers are accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, 1330 W. Peachtree St, Suite 100, Atlanta, Ga., 30309.

Bridges Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Sonjia K. Rottier

Sonjia K. Rottier, 58 of Fremont, Mich. died December 23, 2005.

A native of Pennington Gap, Va. she was the daughter of the late Cecil Shelburne. She was a partner in Rottier Accounting & Tax Service and was a member of First Christian Reform Church of Fremont.

Funeral services were held Dec. 27, in the First Christian Reform Church. The Rev. Allen Petroelje officiated. Interment was in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Fremont, Mich.

She is survived by her husband: James R. Rottier’ three children: Richard (Amy) Rottier of Allendale, Mich, Brian Rottier of Hesparia, Mich and Tiffany Cecil McDonald of Jesup, Ga. ; her mother: Susie Shelburne of Monroe, Ga. ; sisters: Melinda (Wayne) Quinn of Monroe and Cecilia (Phil) Goforth of Loganville; one grandchild.

Memorials are requested to the Fremont Area Community Foundation for the First Christian Reform Church Endowment.

Kroeze-Wolffis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

William “Ben” Knox

William “Ben” Knox, 85 a retired salesman of Conyers, died January 6, 2006.

He is survived by wife of 64 years: Sybil Knox, Conyers; daughters and sons-in-law: Linda and Wesley Cobb, Mansfield, Cynthia and Walt Barr, Social Circle, Kathy Knox, Elijay; son and daughter-in-law: Bob and Trisha Knox, Chatsworth; six grandchildren: Scott Cobb, Jennifer Cobb, Tamara and Tim Haase, Jason and Kelly Barr, Brandon Barr, Jake Knox and Aaron Knox; four great-grandchildren: Kaitlin, Krista and Kyle Cobb, Katherine Haase.

Mr. Knox was a member of Salem United Methodist Church in Conyers. He was a life member and a past president of ASHRAE and RSES.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, Jan. 10 at Salem Untied Methodist Church with The Rev. Randy Kanipe officiating. Contributions may be made to Salem Untied Methodist Church Building fund, 3962 Salem Rd. Covington, Ga. 30016.

Scot Ward Funeral Service-Harry White Chapel, Conyers was in charge of the arrangements.

MR. MAX W. BIPS

Mr. Max W. Bips, 81, of Newnan died Feb. 7, 1997.

Mr. Bips was retired from SCM and Computer Design. He was a member of the Serra Club, the First Friday Club and the Knights of Columbus.

Funeral services were held Feb. 10 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Monsignor Donovan officiating. Interment followed at Greenwood Cemetery.

Survivors include his nephews, John Andy and Mark; niece, Marie; sister-in-law, Virginia; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

MRS. VENA M. COX

Mrs. Vena M. Cox, 87, of Hogansville died Feb. 9, 1997 at Newnan Hospital.

Born July 30, 1909 in Campbell County, Mrs. Cox was the daughter of the late Vanden and Joanna Cobb McFall and the widow of C.R. Cox. She had lived in Coweta County since 1971.

Funeral services were held Feb. 11 at Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Harold Ballew and the Rev. Mike Watson officiating. Interment followed at Myrtle Hill cemetery in Hogansville with Tommy Parlier, Lee Stamps, Douglas Massey, Michael I. Watson, Bill Johns and Mike E. Watson serving as pallbearers.

Survivors include her daughters, Louise Parlier of Grantville, Ruth Booth of Earlsville, Md.; son, Robert J. Cox of Hogansville; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren.

MR. JAMES GORDON KIRBY

Mr. James Gordon Kirby, 57, of Tucson, Ariz. died Feb. 6, 1997 at Northwest Hospital in Tucson.

Born June 22, 1939 in Randolph County, Ala., Mr. Kirby was the son of James Oliver and Widna Neely Kirby.

Funeral services will be held Feb. 12 (today) at Quattlebaum Funeral Home in Roanoke, Ala. with Minister Gerald Romine officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery.

Survivors include his brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Jeanette Kirby of Newnan, and stepfather, Homer Hailey of Tucson.

MRS. ELON KELLEY OWENS

Mrs. Elon Kelley Owens, 75, of Featherstone Drive in Newnan died Feb. 7, 1997 at Newnan Hospital.

Born Dec. 9, 1921 in Georgia, Mrs. Owens was the daughter of the late M.M. and Elon (Kelley) Crumbley and the widow of Dr. James Walter Owens. She was a homemaker.

Graveside services were held Feb. 8 at Oak Hill cemetery in Newnan with the Rev. Hal Keller officiating.

Survivors include her daughters, Nevelle Owens of Newnan, Kelley Owens; grandsons, Walter Stephens, Trey Stephens; brother, Manson Crumbley; and sister, Elizabeth Mann.

Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, 1599 Clifton Road, N.E., Atlanta, Ga., 30329.

MRS. JIMMIE CHAMBERS SLATON

Mrs. Jimmie Chambers Slaton, 57, of Friendswood, Texas died Feb. 3, 1997.

Born Aug. 26, 1939 in Crossville, Ala., Mrs. Slaton was the daughter of the late Robert and Lorene Chambers. She attended the University of Houston and received a real estate license in 1975, later earning a broker's license and other honors and designations in real estate relocation services. She retired from Prudential McCarver Realtors last November.

Mrs. Slaton and her husband, William "Bill" Slaton, met in Newnan in 1957 and were later married in Newnan.

Funeral services were held Feb. 6 at First Baptist Church of Pearland in Texas with the Rev. Rick Scarborough and the Rev. Rod Compton officiating. A second service was held Feb. 8 at McKoon Funeral Home in Newnan with the Rev. O.C. Collins officiating.

Interment followed at Oak Hill cemetery in Newnan.

Survivors include her husband, William "Bill" Slaton of Friendswood; son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Cynthia Slaton of Houston, Texas; granddaughter, Emily Slaton; sisters, Trevalaine Dean of Orlando, Fla., Linda Matthews of Buford, Sheila Morris of Farmont; brothers, Billy J. Chamber of Albertville, Ala., Keith W. Chambers of Orlando; and father-in-law, Oscar Raymond Slaton of Newnan.

Memorial contributions can be made to the First Baptist Church of Pearland's building fund.

MR. HARRY C. SMITH

Mr. Harry C. Smith, 80, of Grantville died Feb. 10, 1997 at Beaulieu Convalescent Center in Newnan.

Prior to retiring, Mr. Smith served for a number of years as chief of the Grantville Police Department. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home.

MR. HOWARD LESTER SMITH

Mr. Howard Lester Smith, 56, of Hobbs, N.M. died Feb. 3, 1997 at his home.

Born June 22, 1940 in Georgia, Mr. Smith was the son of the late James Walker Smith and Susie (Truitt) Smith. He was a toolmaker in the manufacturing industry.

Graveside services were held Feb. 8 at Sargent cemetery with the Rev. Bryan Calhoun officiating. Survivors include his wife, Joann R. (Rhea) Smith of Riverdale; daughters, Jessica Smith of Riverdale, Susan Agawin, of Wagano, Kan.; son, Michael Smith of Griffin; sister, Estelle Bone of Newnan; brother, Henry Smith of Jonesboro; and three grandchildren.

MR. JEFFREY WAYNE SPIVEY

Mrs. Jeffrey Wayne "Jeff" Spivey of Spivey Road in Newnan died Feb. 6, 1997 at Columbia Peachtree Regional Hospital.

Born Dec. 13, 1964 in Georgia, Mr. Spivey operated his own timber company and was a member of the Baptist faith.

Funeral services were held Feb. 8 at McKoon Funeral Home with the Rev. F.D. McWhorter officiating. Interment followed at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Newnan.

Survivors include his wife, Rhonda (Reece) Spivey of Newnan; father, Thomas Spivey of Newnan; mother, Helen (Whitley) Spivey of Newnan; grandfather, Sam Whitley of Newell, Ala.; sister, Nancy Goddard of Newnan; brothers, Danny Spivey, Gary Spivey, both of Newnan; nephews, Matt Goddard, T.J. Spivey, Thomas Spivey; and niece, Ashley Spivey.
