MR. HERBERT DORSEY MANNING SR.

Mr. Herbert Dorsey Manning Sr., 79, of Lincoln Park, N.J., died Feb. 22, 1997 at Lincoln Park, N.J.

Born April 10, 1917 in Spalding County, Mr. Manning was the son of the late Hope and Ola Mae Manning and the husband of the late Lora G. Manning. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and a retired truck driver with 36 years of service with Colonial Stores.

Funeral services were held Feb. 25 at McKoon Funeral Home with the Rev. Searcy Jackson officiating. Interment followed at Greenwood cemetery in Atlanta.

Survivors include his sons, Herbert Dorsey Manning Jr. of Newnan, Bennie Manning of Woodstock; sister, Ruby Hensley of Clayton County; brothers, Hudson Manning of East Point, John Manning of Decatur; eight grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

MR. MICHAEL MARCUS

Mr. Michael Marcus, 40, of Hampton Place in Newnan passed away Feb. 21, 1997 at Newnan Hospital.

He was the son of Rosa Lee Marcus. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Sellers-Smith Funeral Home.

MRS. MARIAN KELLY McWATERS

Mrs. Marian Kelly McWaters of St. Simons Island died Feb. 22 in Brunswick.

Born in Macon County, Mrs. McWaters had been a resident of Glynn County since 1967. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Atlanta.

Graveside services will be held Feb. 25 at Oak Hill cemetery in Newnan with the Rev. Don Helms officiating.

Survivors include her son, Donald A. McWaters of St. Simons Island; sister, Corine Cown of Temple; grandchildren, Joshua Kelly McWaters, Rebecca Lindsey McWaters, both of St. Simons Island; and nephew, William Morgan of Tucker.

Memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Association or First United Methodist Church of Brunswick.

MRS. LAVERGNE HOOD PETERSON

Mrs. Lavergne Hood Peterson, 90. of Woodland Drive in Newnan died Feb. 22, 1997 in Newnan.

Born Sept. 6, 1906 in Rye. Colo., Mrs. Peterson was the daughter of the late John Thomas Hood and Martha Emma (Yancey) Hood and the widow of Dr. John Lester Peterson.

Mrs. Peterson was a homemaker and a member of First United Methodist Church of Newnan. She was a member of the Advisory Committee for Wesley Woods of Newnan-Peachtree City, the Newnan Junior Service League, the Newnan Hospital Auxiliary, the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society, the Manget-Brannon Center for the Arts and the Newnan Art Association.

Funeral services were held Feb. 24 at First United Methodist Church of Newnan with the Rev. Terry Thompkins officiating, assisted by the Rev. Gary Parrish. Interment followed at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Newnan with Donald Chapman, Alex Davis, William Hartselle, Frank Mantunis, Donald Tolbert and Carl Williams serving as pallbearers.

Survivors include her sisters, Mary Emma Reed and Martha Angie Hood, both of Newnan.

MRS. BETTY BROWN POWELL

Mrs. Betty Brown Powell, 76, of Newnan, formerly of LaGrange, died Feb. 23, 1997 at the Florence Hand Home in LaGrange.

Born Sept. 21, 1920 in Newnan, Mrs. Powell was the daughter of the late J. Roy brown and Rosa (Askew) Brown. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church in Newnan.

Funeral services were held Feb. 24 at McKoon Funeral Home with Dr. Gene Tyre officiating. Interment followed at Oak Hill cemetery in Newnan with David Boyd, Hank Powell, Mitch Powell, Hubert McKoy, Asa Powell and Bill Powell serving as pallbearers.

Survivors include her husband, Lewis O. Powell Jr. of Newnan; daughter, Josephine Powell Goodstein of Orlando, Fla.; sons, Lewis O. Brown III of LaGrange, Roy Brown Powell of Newnan; sisters, Sara Hale of Mayfield, Ky., Rosalyn McCoy of Newnan, Vivian Huguley of LaFayette, Ala.; and four grandchildren.

MRS. JEAN WOOD

Mrs. Jean Wood, 80, of Newnan died Feb. 20, 1997 at Newnan Hospital.

Born July 1, 1916 in Newnan, Mrs. Wood was the daughter of the late Garnet M. and Imogene (Reaves) Reynolds. She was preceded in death by a son, David Wood.

Mrs. Wood was a retired librarian and Newnan's Carnegie Library and a member of First Baptist Church in Newnan.

Graveside services were held Feb. 22 at Oak Hill cemetery in Newnan with the Rev. Don Helms officiating, assisted by the Rev. L.C. Lane.

Survivors include her son, Mr. and Mrs. Eldrid (Sue) "Woody" Wood of Charlotte, N.C.; daughter-in-law, Mrs. David (Ellen) Wood of Newnan; grandchildren, Leigh Wood of Carrollton, Jodi Wood of Concord, N.C., Jenny Wood, Katie Wood, both of Newnan; and brother, David W. Reynolds of Newnan.

Memorial contributions cane be made to the American Cancer Society.

MISS NICOLE MARIE "NIKKI" BUXTON

Miss Nicole Marie "Nikki" Buxton, 8, of Prattville, Ala., died Feb. 15, 1997 from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

Funeral services were held Feb. 18 at First United Methodist Church in Prattville with the Rev. T. Leo Brannon and the Rev. Bill Price officiating. Interment followed at Prattville Memory Gardens with Chad Heflin, Kevin Buxton, Michael Smith and Joey Buxton serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Julie Brown and Buxton's third-grade classmates.

Survivors include her mother, Natalie Marie Buxton of Newnan; father, Scott Alan Buston of Prattville; maternal grandparents, Raymond and Wanita DuBois of Newnan; paternal grandparents, Donald E. and Sharon J. Buston Jr. of Allentown, Penn.; maternal great-grandmother, Marion Wetherbee and great grandfather, Arthur Clairmont, both of Laconia, N.H.; and paternal great-grandmothers, Mary Buxton of Allentown and Ruth Simons of Plant City, Fla.

MR. FRANK L. HARRINGTON

Mr. Frank L. Harrington, 67, of Bailey Drive in Newnan died Feb. 19, 1997 at Dogwood Health Center in Fairburn.

Born Oct. 2, 1929 in North Carolina, Mr. Harrington was the son of the late Luther and Cornelia (Hammett) Harrington. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Newnan and a retired salesman with Gulf Life Insurance Co.

Funeral services were held Feb. 21 at McKoon Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Helms officiating. Interment followed at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Newnan with members of the David Stripling Sunday School Class serving as pallbearers and honorary escort.

Survivors include his wife, Sara P. (Potts) Harrington; daughters, Mr. and Mrs. David (Sandy) Moore of Lawrenceville, Dana Harrington of Franklin; son, Kenneth Harrington of Milledgeville; brothers, George Harrington, Ed Harrington, both of Newnan; and grandsons, Ben Harrington and Chris Harrington.

Memorial contributions can be made to First Baptist Church of Newnan.

MRS. MARTHA JEAN GIBSON HEATH

Mrs. Martha Jean Gibson Heath, 72, of Tuxedo Avenue in Newnan passed away Feb. 13, 1997 at her home.

Born March 7, 1924 in Coweta County, Mrs. Heath was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Gibson and the widow of Noah Heath. She was a member of Wesley Chapel AME Church, where she served on the Usher's Board.

Funeral services were held Feb. 19 at Wesley Chapel AME Church with the Rev. Melvin Henry officiating, assisted by the Rev. R.W. Sutton and the Rev. Charles Beadles. Interment followed at the church cemetery with Vernon Strickland, Robert Sutton Jr., Olive Parker, Vernon Marquise Strickland, Bernard Almon, Jarvis Warner and Roderick Almon serving as pallbearers.

Survivors include her children, Irma Reid (Deannie), Mr. and Mrs. Glen (Linda) Stovall, Gail Parker, Teresa Strozier; sisters, Mr. and Mrs. R.H. (Mary) Neely, Iretha Almon; brother, Brunnell Gibson; mother-in-law, Lucille Heath; sister-in-law, Nettie Gibson; brother-in-law, James Marvin Heath; in-laws, aunts and uncles, Donnie Powell, Katie Freeman, Lillie Derring, Welborn Orr; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; nieces and nephews.

MR. STEVE JOHNS

Mr. Steve Johns, 44, of Cedar Court in Newnan died Feb. 15, 1997 in Newnan.

Born April 12, 1952 in Coweta County, Mr. Johns was a member of Mills Chapel Baptist Church and worked at the Kmart warehouse in Newnan. He was preceded in death by a brother, James Lee Johns, and a daughter, Olivia Johns.

Graveside services were held Feb. 17 at Oak Hill cemetery in Newnan with the Rev. Danny Wilson officiating, assisted by the Rev. Ed Helton.

Survivors include his wife, Sherri Ruth (Tenney) Johns of Newnan; father, Clifford Johns of Newnan; mother, Mozelle (Sanders) Plant of Hogansville; daughter, Julie Harrell of Jasper; and three grandchildren.

MRS. ANNIE M. "GEE" JONES

Mrs. Annie M. "Gee" Jones, 90, of Golfview Club Drive in Newnan died Feb. 17, 1997 in Newnan.

Born Nov. 19, 1906 in Heard County, Mrs. Jones was the daughter of the late L.M. and Letha (Cato) Staley and the widow of William Dixon Jones. She was a member of First Christian Church in Newnan and was a homemaker.

Funeral services were held Feb. 19 at McKoon Funeral Home with minister Lindsey Herndon officiating, assisted by minister Clay Henry. Interment followed at Oak Hill cemetery in Newnan with her grandsons serving as pallbearers.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin (Betty Jean) Johnston of Newnan; son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Charles (Jeanene) Jones of Hollywood, Fla.; daughter-in-law, Mrs. W.D. Jones Jr. of Columbus; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

MISS SHAKIRA SIMONE REEVES

Miss Shakira Simone Reeves of Hines Circle in Grantville passed away Feb. 16, 1997 at Columbus Medical Center.

Funeral services were held Feb. 19 at Sellers-Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Clinton Melson officiating, assisted by Elder Daniel and the Rev. Billy B. Glanton. Interment followed at the Macedonia Baptist Church cemetery in Grantville with family and friends serving as pallbearers.

Survivors include her parents, Tommy B. Reeves and Lisa T. Hines; grandparents, Joseph and Jannie Hines, Tom and Barbara Reeves; uncles, Joseph Antoine Hines, the Rev. Windur Reeves; aunts, Angela Hines, Tracy Reeves, Veronica Reeves, Marshella Reeves; great-grandparents; great uncles; aunts and cousins.
