MR. LARRY JACKSON ROOKS

Mr. Larry Jackson Rooks, 56, of La Porte, Texas died Feb. 18, 1997 at his home.

Born Feb. 24, 1940 in Newnan, Mr. Rooks was the son of the late Allen J. Rooks and Idell Watts Rooks.

Funeral services were held Feb. 20 at Paul U. Lee-La Porte Funeral Home with the Rev. Julian Davis officiating. Interment followed at the La Porte Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Carrie Caldwell Rooks of La Porte; daughters, Robbin and David Hardy of La Porte, Patty and Bill Byrom of South Carolina; son, Paul Rooks; and grandchildren, Korey Stone, D.J. Stone, Krista Byrom and Beth Byrom.

MRS. EDITH CHRISTINE SPENCER

Mrs. Edith Christine Spencer, 74, of East Kimble Street in Newnan died Feb. 19, 1997 at Peachtree Regional Hospital.

Born Nov. 11, 1922 in Coweta County, Mrs. Spencer was the daughter of the late Albertis Spencer and Mattie Jewell Hughes Spencer. She was a housewife.

Funeral services will be held today at 2:30 p.m. at Hillcrest Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Gary Howard officiating, assisted by the Rev. Frank Powers. Interment followed at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Newnan with her nephews serving as pallbearers.

Survivors include her sons, Ellis L. Shaw of Spring, Texas, Anthony Ray Shaw of Carrollton; sister, Margaret Webb of Newnan; brothers, Thomas Spencer of Newnan, Walter Spencer of Conley, Jimmy Spencer of East Point, Ronnie Spencer, Jerry Spencer, Danny Spencer, all of Newnan; and two grandchildren.

MR. JAMES W. WHITTEN

Mr. James W. Whitten, 90, of Luthersville died Feb. 18, 1997 at Columbia Peachtree Regional Hospital in Newnan.

Born Aug. 26, 1906 in Meriwether County, Mr. Whitten was the son of the late James and Mary Barber Whitten. He was a retired farmer.

Funeral services were held Feb. 19 at Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Powers Witcher officiating. Interment followed at the Bethel Baptist Church cemetery in Rocky Mount with Stanley McDonald, Earl Whitten, Johnny Whitten, Don Whitten, Donnie Whitten and Michael Townley serving as pallbearers.

Survivors include his daughters, Mary McDonald of Warm Springs, Brenda Townley of LaGrange; sons, Lawrence Whitten, Robert Whitten, both of Luthersville, Warren Whitten of Woodbury, Gary Whitten of Newnan; 16 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

MR. CHESTER BRIMER

Mr. Chester Brimer, 87, of Brimer Road in Newnan died Feb. 16, 1997 at Beaulieu Convalescent Center in Newnan.

Born Dec. 7, 1909 in Georgia, Mr. Brimer was the son of the late David A. and Mary Ida Elizabeth (Moore) Brimer and the husband of the late Edna Christine (Williams) Brimer. He was a member of Andrews Chapel United Methodist Church and was retired from the Georgia Highway Department.

Funeral services were held Feb. 18 at McKoon Funeral Home with the Rev. Gary Parrish officiating, assisted by the Rev. Sean Robinson. Interment followed at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Newnan with Charles Allen, Phil Allen, Bobby Ayers, Ricky Ayers, James Brimer, Terry Brimer, Dennis Coggin and Daniel Coggin serving as pallbearers.

Survivors include his daughters, Mr. and Mrs. Robert (Betty) Ayers, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce (Ruby) Allen, Mr. and Mrs. Buddy (Florine) Coggin, all of Newnan; son, Mr. and Mrs. David (Charlotte) Brimer of Newnan; nine grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions can be made to Andrews Chapel United Methodist Church.

MRS. IRENE BROWN

Mrs. Irene Brown, 86, of Spring Street in Newnan died Feb. 10, 1997.

Born May 16, 1910 in Carroll County, Mrs. brown was the daughter of the late Oscar and Kate Baskin and the widow of James Brown. She was retired from J.C. Penney in Rome and attended First Baptist Church in Luthersville.

Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her son, Jerry Brown; four brothers; a sister; and a granddaughter, Jane Thompson.

Funeral services were held Feb. 13 at Martian and Hightower Heritage Chapel with the Rev. Ray Collins officiating. Interment followed at the Carrollton City cemetery with Chris Evans, Richard Evans, Wendell Holmes, Darrell Brown, Jimmy Gilmore and Fred Baskin serving as pallbearers.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, James and Jacqueline Brown of Luthersville; a grandchild and three step-grandchildren.

MRS. HARRIETT BROWN

Mrs. Harriett Brown, 73 of Eastboga, Ala., died Feb. 13, 1997 Anniston Regional Medical center.

Born March 24, 1923 in Coweta County, Mrs. Brown was the daughter of the late Lubie Carlton and Jewell Jones Bailey and the widow of Wiley Monroe Brown. She was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Alan Bailey.

Mrs. Brown was retired from Douglas and Lomason and was a member of Kansas Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held Feb. 15 at Whitesburg Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Howard and the Rev. Roger Nolen officiating. Interment followed at Whitesburg cemetery with her nephews serving as pallbearers and the Rev. Harris McElroy officiating.

Survivors include her children, Melinda Hester of Roopville, Pamela Skinner, of Eastboga, Ala., Joe Max Brown of Abernathy, Ala., Bobbie Sue Marlow, James Brown, both of Bowdon; sister, Mildred Bailey of Carrollton; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, James and Doris Brown of Baton Rouge, La.; three grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; and several step-great-grandchildren.

MR. EUGENE CROCKER

Mr. Eugene Crocker, 62, of Hogansville died Feb. 15, 1997 at his home.

Born Oct. 24, 1934 in Thomaston, Ala., Mr. Crocker was the son of the late Carl and Agnes Trainham Crocker. A retired educator, he was a graduate of Troy State University and received a master's degree and six-year certificate from Auburn University.

Mr. Crocker retired as superintendent of the Hogansville School System after serving for 30 years as a teacher, coach, and primary school principal.

With the closing of Crocker Primary School in December, the Troup County School Board named the gymnasium at Hogansville Elementary School in his honor. He was a member of the Professional Association of Georgia Educators and the Georgia High School Association, serving as secretary for 10 years.

Mr. Crocker was a member and deacon of Highland Baptist Church and a member of the Hogansville Golf Club.

Funeral services were held Feb. 17 at Highland Baptist Church with Dr. Jimmy Brown officiating. Interment followed at Myrtle Hill cemetery in Hogansville with Tyrone Montgomery, Don Hendrix, Sammy Hubbard, Elmer Williams, Mark Smith and Trey Tucker serving as pallbearers.

Honorary pallbearers were Junior Smith, Wheeler Bryan, Tommy Thrower, Perk Hammett, Julian Cannon, Charles Maxwell and Nathan Hale.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Miller Crocker of Hogansville; daughters, Carol Stanley of Stone Mountain, Carla Hale of LaGrange; son, Thomas Crocker of LaGrange; and five grandchildren.

MR. JOHN QUIG GRAY

Mr. John Quig Gray, 74, of Binion Court in Newnan died Feb. 16, 1997 at Fairburn Health Care.

Born March 13, 1921 in Coweta County, Mr. Gray was the son of the late John Judson Gray and Ruth Elizabeth Boswell Gray. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Gray was retired from the shipping department at William L Bonnell Company.

Funeral services were held Feb. 18 at Hillcrest Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Carl Calhoun officiating assisted by the Rev. Terry Calhoun. Interment followed at Calvary Baptist Church cemetery with James Callaway, Alvin Gray, Charlie Gray, John Gray and Gary Gregory serving as pallbearers.

Survivors include his wife, Trudie Gray of Newnan; step-children, Susie Arrington of Franklin, Lucy Johnson of Twin City, Shirley Yeager of Moreland, Jessie Harris of Newnan, Edward Harris of Sharpsburg, Roland Harris of Florida, Alvin Harris of Newnan, Benny Harris of Florida, Troy Harris; sisters, Mozelle Thompson of Newnan, Hazel Gray of Elyria, Ohio, Ann Harris of Sharpsburg; brother, Frankie Gray of Sharpsburg; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

MRS. MARTHA JEAN HEATH

Mrs. Martha Jean Heath of Tuxedo Avenue in Newnan passed away Feb. 13, 1997 at her home. She was the widow of Noah Heath.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Sellers -Smith Funeral Home.

MRS. LILLIE MAE HILL

Mrs. Lillie Mae Hill, 86, of Heard County died Feb. 13, 1997 at Newnan Hospital.

Born May 21, 1910 in Decatur, Ala., Mrs. Hill was the daughter of the late George Davis Reed and Martha Emma (Stovall) Reed and the widow of Forrest Hill. She was a homemaker and a member of the Methodist faith.

Graveside services were held Feb. 15 at Crestwood cemetery in Gadsden, Ala.

Survivors include her daughter, Glenda Juanita Stuckey of Gadsden; sons, Roland D. Turner of Franklin, Ormand Turner of San Antonio, Texas; nine grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.

MR. STEVE JOHNS

Mr. Steve Johns, 44, of Cedar Court in Newnan died Feb. 15, 1997 in Newnan.

Born April 12, 1952 in Coweta County, Mr. Johns was a member of Mills Chapel Baptist Church and worked at the Kmart warehouse in Newnan. He was preceded in death by a brother, James Lee Johns, and a daughter, Olivia Johns.

Graveside services were held Feb. 17 at Oak Hill cemetery in Newnan with the Rev. Danny Wilson officiating, assisted by the Rev. Ed Helton.

Survivors include his wife, Sherri Ruth (Tenney) Johns of Newnan; father, Clifford Johns of Newnan; mother, Mozelle (Sanders) Plant of Hogansville; and three grandchildren.
