MRS. LEONA YOUNG

Mrs. Leona Young, 88, of Berry Avenue in Newnan died Sept. 18, 1997 at South West Christian Hospice.

Born Sept. 19, 1908 in Dawson, Ga., Mrs. Young was a member of Mills Chapel Baptist Church and was retired from Playtex.

Funeral will be Sept. 20 (today) at Hillcrest Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Daugherty officiating, assisted by the Rev. James Stewart. Burial will follow at Oak Hill cemetery in Newnan with Ed Norton, Chris McCullough, Joe Thompson, Tony Stephens, Lloyd Nunn and Steve West serving as pallbearers.

Survivors include her daughter, Myrtle Hanson of Newnan; grandchildren, Linda McCollough, Kenny Hanson, Michael T. Hanson, all of Newnan; sister, Irene Pearson of Newnan; brother, Howard Eaton of Camp Hill, Ala.; and seven great-grandchildren.

MRS. ANNIE KEITH ANDERSON

Mrs. Annie Keith Anderson, 96, formerly of Greenville, died Sept. 11, 1997 at Christian City Convalescent Center in Union City.

Born July 27, 1901 in Meriwether County, Mrs. Anderson was the daughter of the late William and Adelia Jeter Keith and the widow of William B. Anderson. She was a member of Greenville United Methodist Church.

Funeral services were held Sept. 13 at Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Carl Ryden officiating. Interment followed at Shadowlawn cemetery in LaGrange.

Survivors include her daughters, Eleanor A. Preston of Live Oak, Fla., Kathryn A. Harris of Stone Mountain; sister, Patra Montgomery of Greenville; brother, Norman Keith of Greenville; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

MRS. MATTIE KATE BISHOP

Mrs. Mattie Kate Bishop, 83, of Newnan died Sept. 14, 1997 at Newnan Hospital.

Born Jan. 17, 1914 in Coweta County, Mrs. Bishop was the daughter of the late Luther Bishop and Jewell Strickland. She was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Bishop. She was a member of Victory Tabernacle Baptist Church and a former textiles worker.

Funeral services were held Sept. 15 at Hillcrest Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Terry Calhoun officiating. Interment followed at at Pitts cemetery with Jake McMillian, Jake Williamson, Jon Hill, Clint Eason, Nathan Ford and Tony Wingate serving as pallbearers.

Survivors include her sisters, Corie Mae Williamson, Betty Jane Smith, Mary Brackett, all of Newnan; grandchildren, Steve Bishop, Timothy Bishop, Robert Bishop; and great-grandchildren, Brittany Bishop, Amanda Bishop, Samantha Bishop, Courtney Bishop, Teagan Bishop and Joe Bishop.

MRS. GERTRUDE BLUE BROWN

Mrs. Gertrude Blue Brown, 96, of Lower Fayetteville Road in Newnan died Sept. 12, 1997 at Beaulieu Convalescent Center.

Born March 12, 1901 in Washington County, Fla., Mrs. Brown was the daughter of the late Duncan and Annie McQuagge Blue.

A resident of Coweta County since 1933, she and her late husband, Elliott W. Brown Sr., founded Brown Steel Contractors in 1945. She served as head of accounting and chief financial officer until 1971.

Funeral services were held Sept. 14 at McKoon Funeral Home with the Dr. O. Gene Tyre officiating, assisted by the Rev. M. Kyle Brown, Mrs. Brown's grandson. Interment followed at Oak Hill cemetery in Newnan with her grandsons and the husbands of two of her granddaughters serving as pallbearers.

Survivors include her sisters, Sybil Blue of Chipley, Fla., Mary Pounds of Palatka, Fla.; sons, Elliott W. "Bill" Brown Jr., Sample D. Brown, both of Newnan, W. Hubert Brown of Griffin; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

MRS. CLARA DENNEY CLIETT

Mrs. Clara Denney Cliett of Hogansville died Sept. 13, 1997 at Hospice LaGrange.

A native of Heard County, Mrs. Cliett was the daughter of the late William and Mary Cook Denney. She was a member of St. James United Methodist Church and a member of the Homemakers Club.

Funeral services were held Sept. 16 at Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Marion Shivers and the Rev. Charles Crenshaw officiating. Interment followed at Hillview Annex cemetery in LaGrange with Dennis Brock, Wallace Cook, Pete Oliver, Buster Courtney, Frank Wilson and Wendell Willis serving as pallbearers.

Survivors include her husband, P.L. Cliett of Hogansville; foster son, Ben Kitchens of Junction City, Kan.; sister, Sibyl Lee of Hogansville; three foster grandchildren and four foster great-grandchildren.

MR. OSCAR DIXON

Mr. Oscar Dixon, 79, of Ray Street in Newnan passed away Sept. 10, 197 at Peachtree Regional Hospital.

Born May 14, 1918 in Coweta County, Mr. Dixon was a member of Greater Mt. Zion AME Church. A graduate of Howard Warner High School, he served in the U.S. Navy and retired from Newnan Cotton Mill after 43 years.

Funeral services were held Sept. 13 at Greater Mt. Zion AME Church with the Rev. James. A. Alexander officiating. Interment followed at Westview cemetery with his nephews serving as pallbearers.

Survivors include his wife, Amanda Dixon; sisters, Sarah Stallings, Vivian Pierce, Jacqueline Lucas; brothers, Charles Dixon, Walter McCrary, Mr. and Mrs. Major McCrary, Mr. and Mrs. Dennis McCrary; aunt, Iola Smith; sister-in-law, Annie Johnson; nieces and nephews.

MR. BRISON "BRAD" EVANS

Mr. Brison "Brad" Evans, 28, of Poythress Road in Newnan passed away Sept. 8, 1997 at Peachtree Regional Hospital.

Born Feb. 28, 1969, Mr. Evans was the son of the late Charlie A. Evans. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charlie Albert Evans Jr.

Memorial services were held Sept. 11 at Sellers-Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Marion H. Price Sr. officiating, assisted by the Rev. J.C. Strickland and minister Mary Nell Burden.

Survivors include his mother, Mattie B. Strickland; brothers, Mr. and Mrs. Ronald B. Smith, Kenneth Evans, Alton G. Evans; sisters, Mr. and Mrs. Jeffery (Fannie Pearl) Prather, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred L. (Jennifer) Godfrey, Marva Evans, Cassandra L. Conledy; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Strickland of Newnan; aunts; uncles; nieces and nephews.

MRS. MARY GIBSON POOLE HARRIS

Mrs. Mary Gibson Poole Harris, 86, of Morristown, Tenn. died Sept. 12 in Morristown.

Born Aug. 9, 1911, Mrs. Harris was the daughter of the late James Lemuel Poole and Ada Catharine Gibson Poole. She was preceded in death by a sister, Catharine Wright Poole.

Mrs. Harris was educated at Newnan High School and attended Shorter College and Georgia State College for Women. She worked for First National Bank, Manget Cotton Brokers and Johnson Hardware.

Graveside services were held Sept. 14 at Oak Hill cemetery in Newnan with Dr. Joel Richardson officiating.

Survivors include Ada Sue Harris of Morristown, Reba Haloski of Woodstock and her grandchildren.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Georgia Baptist Children's Home, the Parkinson's Association or Central Baptist Church of Newnan.

MR. JAMES FRANK HOLLOWAY

Mr. Frank Holloway, 58, of Wallace Gray Road in Newnan passed away Sept. 4, 1997 at Peachtree Regional Hospital.

Born Sept. 26, 1938 in LaFayette, Ala., Mr. Holloway was the son of the late Luke and Annie Holloway. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church and worked for Bibb Co. and Design Foods.

Funeral services were held Sept. 8 at New Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Clifford Davis officiating, assisted by the Rev. Emory Hawkins, the Rev. R.L. Teagle and the Rev. J.T. Coleman. Interment followed at Sunset cemetery with Jimmy Ballard, P.J. Phillip. Willie Whatley and Willie Roy Hardaway serving as pallbearers.

Survivors include the Rev. and Mrs. Ashley (Rosie) Stewartson, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin (Annetha) Lowe, Mr. and Mrs. Michael (Carolyn) Freeman, Mr. and Mrs. Donald (Jeannette) Herring, all of Newnan; brother, Mr. and Mrs. Otis (Annie) Holloway of Newnan; sister, Annie B. Holloway of LaFayette; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; aunts; uncles; nieces and nephews.

MRS. AVICE M. JOHNSON

Mrs. Avice M. Johnson, 90, of Carrollton died Sept. 11, 1997 at Tanner Medical Center.

Born in Carroll County, Mrs. Johnson was the daughter of the late John Edgar Matthews and Pearl Mae Brock Matthews and the widow of Percy V. Johnson. She was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held Sept. 13 at Pleasant View Baptist Church with the Rev. Jay Sutton officiating. Interment followed at the church cemetery with his grandsons, Tim Powers, Dennis Johnson, Greg Powers, Dale Johnson, Rodney Johnson and Kris Johnson serving as pallbearers.

Survivors include her daughter, Earline J. Powers of Villa Rica; sons and daughters-in-law, Horry and Eunice Johnson of Carrollton, Donald and Sandra Johnson of Tallapoosa, William R. and Sarah Johnson of Newnan; sister, Mildred Matthews of Atlanta; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

MR. WALTER HOWARD LASSETTER

Mr. Walter Howard Lassetter, 72, of Old Town, Fla., died Sept. 10, 1997 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Gainesville, Fla.

Born April 16, 1925 in Newnan, Mr. Lassetter was the son of the late Jeff Lassetter and Mattie (Williams) Lassetter. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War Two, he was employed as a truck driver by Complete Auto Transit for more than 35 years.

Funeral services were held Sept. 14 at McKoon Funeral Home with the Rev. Harvey McClendon officiating. Interment followed at Holly Hill cemetery in Fairburn with military honors.

Survivors include his son, Michael Lassetter of Sharpsburg; daughters, Elaine Lummus of Riverdale, Jean Crankshaw of Dallas; brothers, James Lassetter of Pine Mountain, Elam Lassetter of Lone Oak, Jesse Lassetter of Newnan; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
