Mrs. Ella Mae (King) Hardaway

Mrs. Ella Mae (King) Hardaway, 99, of Mobile, Alabama, died Oct. 2, 1997, at a Mobile, Alabama, area hospital.

Mrs. Hardaway was born Nov. 27, 1897, in Moreland, Ga. and lived most of her life in Newnan and Atlanta, Ga. In 1920 she married John Robert Hardaway, and they were married for 58 years prior to his death in 1978. Mrs. Hardaway was a professional seamstress and was employed by a firm making dresses for retail sales, and later she became a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union, and worked until age 65. At the time of her death she was residing in a retirement facility in Mobile, Ala.

Funeral services for Mrs. Hardaway will be held Tuesday, Oct. 7, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home in Newnan, with the Rev. Travis Eidson officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Newnan.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Hugh Ernest and Eloyce Hardaway Sr. of Mobile, Ala.; grandson, Hugh E. Hardaway Jr. of Mobile; great-grandson, Preston Hardaway, and great-granddaughter, Taylor Hardaway, both of Mobile, Ala.; and sister, Miss Sarah King of Stone Mountain, Ga.

Mr. William E. "Ernest" Peek

Mr. William E. "Ernest" Peek, 84, of Luthersville died Oct. 4, 1997 in Franklin, Ga.

Mr. Peek was born July 29, 1913 in Palmetto, Ga., and was son of the late William and Rebecca Peek. He was a member of Luthersville United Methodist Church and belonged to the brotherhood of Free and Accepted Masons. Mr. Peek was retired from AT&T, Southern Bell.

Services were held Monday morning, Oct. 6, at McKoon Funeral Home, Newnan, with the Rev. Patrick Jansen officiating. Interment was at Hillcrest cemetery in East Point, Ga.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Fedelia O. (Johnson) Peek of Luthersville; daughter, Mrs. Rebecca Andrea Hoggard of East Point, Ga.; son, Mr. William Ronald Peek, Woodland, Alabama; sister, Mrs. Louise Reardon, Newnan; brother, Mr. Roy Peek, Newnan; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren.

Miss Florine Elizabeth Smith

Miss Florine Elizabeth Smith, 93, of Mt. Carmel Road in Newnan died Oct. 1, 1997, at Beaulieu Convalescent Center.

Born Aug. 31, 1904 in Newnan, Miss Smith was the daughter of the late Alton and Annie (Austin) Smith. She was a retired insurance clerk and a member of Elim Baptist Church.

Graveside services were held the afternoon of Oct. 4 at Oak Hill cemetery with the Rev. Glenn Dow officiating.

Survivors include her sisters, Jimmie Storey and Ellen Johnson, of Newnan; sister-in-law Mrs. Sarah Smith, of Newnan; nieces, Susan Milam of Macon, Mary Ellen Strickland of Fayetteville; great-nephews, Dr. Mallory "Chip" Milam of Boston, Mass., Shane Milam of Macon; great-niece, Elizabeth Milam of Macon; and sister-in-law, Ethelyn Smith of Lavonia.

The Rev. Frank W. Brown

The Rev. Frank W. Brown, 73, of Sandy Springs died Oct. 4, 1997.

During his ministry, the Rev. Brown served Fairfax Baptist Church in Hapeville, Park Avenue Baptist Church and Utoy Springs Baptist Church in Atlanta and Macedonia Baptist Church in Newnan.

A veteran of World War Two, he was vice president of the Georgia Baptist Convention Executive Committee.

Funeral services will be held Oct. 8 (today) at 1 p.m. at Arlington Chapel with interment following at Macedonia Baptist Church.

Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Andrea and Ted Altholz, Melanie and David Scholfield, all of Atlanta; brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Annette Brown of Tampa, Fla.; three grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Effie N. Carroll

Mrs. Effie N. Carroll, 86, of U.S. Highway 29 South in Moreland died Oct. 6, 1997 at Newnan Hospital.

Born Feb. 2, 1911 in Spalding County, Mrs. Carroll was the daughter of the late Andrew Neil and Camilla (Brown) Neil and the wife of the late Leonard Carroll Sr. She was a member of Moreland Baptist Church and was retired from Moreland Hosiery Mills.

Funeral services will be held Oct. 8 (today) at 11 a.m. at McKoon Funeral home with the Rev. Jerry Eley officiating. Interment will follow at Southview cemetery with Stanley Cauthen, Joe Pelletier, Don Carroll, Tim Carroll, Gene Cammon and Jimmy Yarbrough serving as pallbearers.

Survivors include her son, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard (Gail) Carroll Jr. of Dalton; brother, Fred Neil of Dixon, Tenn.; and grandson, Mr. and Mrs. Jeff (Leslie) Carroll of Moreland.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Moreland Baptist Church building fund.

Mr. Steve Houston of Strong Lane in Madras passed away Oct. 6, 1997 at Southern Regional medical Center, Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Sellers-Smith Funeral Home.

Mr. Meritt "Jack" Myles Huntley

Mr. Meritt "Jack" Myles Huntley, 86, died Oct. 7, 1997, in Zephyrhills, Fla.

Born April 16, 1911 in Masardis, Maine, Mr. Huntley was the son of the late Preston and Edith Craig Huntley. He was preceded in death by a son, William James Huntley of Gainesville, Fla.

Mr. Huntley owned and operated Jack's Garage in Auburn until the late 1950s and Huntley's Orchards in Hebron until the 1970s. He also built homes in Florida and Maine, building his last home in Masardis at the age of 79.

Mr. Huntley was a member of Ashland Advent Christian Church and a former member of Auburn Advent Christian Church. Following a funeral in Mechanic Falls, Maine, interment will follow at Grace Lawn Memorial Gardens there.

Survivors include his wife, Grace; daughters, Ruth Vincent of Zephyrhills, Janice Murch of Sharpsburg; sons, Vernon G. Huntley of Hebron, Maine; a brother, Harold Clark of Auburn, Maine; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions can be sent to the Handicapped Access Fund, Advent Christian Church, Ashland, Maine, 04782.

Ms. Hazel J. Kennedy

Ms. Hazel J. Kennedy, 66, of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Newnan passed away Oct. 1, 1997, at Newnan Hospital.

Born May 8, 1931 in Coweta County, Ms. Kennedy was the daughter of the late Rev. W.R. Jenkins and the wife of the late Roosevelt Kennedy. She was preceded in death by a brother, Bennie Jenkins.

An evangelist, Ms. Kennedy was affiliated with St. John Baptist Church until she graduated from Warner High School and later moved to Detroit, Mich., where she joined Greater Solomon Baptist Church.

She earned bachelor's and master's degrees in English from Ft. Wayne State University and later received a degree in divinity.

Funeral services were held Oct. 5 at St. John Baptist Church with the Rev. John E. Farmer and the Rev. Rufus Smith officiating, assisted by the Rev. Crawford Smith, the Rev. Clinton Melson, the Rev. Sandra Reese and Evangelist Zadie Sims.

Interment followed at the church cemetery with Edward Hunter, Charlie Glass, Willie L. Thompson, Thomas Harris, Athel Ball and Melvin Aycock serving as pallbearers.

Survivors include her brother, Mr. and Mrs. Curtis (Ann) Jenkins; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Jenkins; nieces, Angelyn Jenkins, Cynthia Jenkins; nephews, Adrian Jenkins, Bertrand Jenkins and cousins.

Miss Holly Nichols

Miss Holly Nichols, 12, of Riverdale died Oct. 6, 1997 at Scottish Rite Hospital after an extended illness.

Miss Nichols was born Sept. 27, 1985 in Newnan.

Funeral services will be held Oct. 8 (today) at 2 p.m. at Parrott Funeral Home in Fairburn with Brother David Ramey officiating. Interment will follow at Camp Memorial in Fayetteville.

Survivors include her parents, Shelly Nichols of Riverdale and Mike Nichols of Newnan; sister, Kimberly Nichols of Riverdale; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred J.W. Leonard Sr. of Riverdale, Mr. and Mrs. Rowe Nichols of Young Harris; great-grandmothers; aunts; uncles and cousins.

Mrs. Gladys L. Smith

Mrs. Gladys L. Smith, 83, of Georgia Highway 16 East in Sharpsburg died Oct. 6, 1997 at Newnan Hospital.

Born Sept. 8, 1914 in Millerville, Ala., Mrs. Smith was the daughter of the late James Alonzo Lewis and Minnie Belle (Poage) Lewis. She was a member of East Newnan Baptist Church and a homemaker.

Funeral services will be held Oct. 8 (today) at 2 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home with the Rev. Frank Powers officiating, assisted by the Rev. John Evans. The Rev. Willie Joe Loftin will serve as honorary minister.

Interment will follow at Sharpsburg Baptist Church cemetery with her grandsons serving as pallbearers.

Survivors include her husband Richard F. Smith Sr. of Sharpsburg; daughters and sons-in-law, Bill and Anne Harbour of Decatur, Dan and Betty Loftin, John and Joyce Evans, all of Moreland, Roy and Joan Hanson of Newnan; son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Elizabeth Smith Jr. of Newnan; and 10 grandchildren.

Sgt. Melvin Wilson

Sgt. Melvin Wilson, 69, of Country Club Road in Newnan passed away Oct. 2, 1997 at Newnan Hospital.

Born Aug. 12, 1928 in Fulton County, Sgt. Wilson was the son of the late James Wilson and Annie Lawrence Wilson. He retired from the U.S. Army after 25 years of service and helped organize W.M. Wilson ministries.

Funeral services were held Oct. 6 at Sellers-Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Clinton Elder officiating, assisted by Evangelist Sadie Mae Sims, Evangelist Marion Lattimore, Evangelist Mary Elder and Evangelist Katherine Church. Interment followed at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in College Park with Veterans of Foreign Wars serving as pallbearers.

Survivors include his wife, Pastor Willie Mae Wilson; daughters, Cynthia Irving, Vanessa Terrell of Newnan' sisters-in-law, Ludella and Eddie Brown, Annie Ruth Wilson, all of Atlanta; five grandchildren; and nieces.
