David Toy Shepherd, 67 died June 27, 2007 at Wellstar Douglas Hospital in Douglasville Georgia, after a long illness. He was born in Kentucky on Sept. 19, 1939 and lived in Monroe for the last 30 years. He was preceded in death by his life long friend Gayle Price; two sisters and a brother.

George I. Malcom, 91 of Monroe died July 23, 2007. A native and life long resident of Walton County, he was a son of the late Lovette and Allene Rooks Malcom. He was a retired employee of the Coca Cola Bottling Co. and was a charter member of Ray Memorial Presbyterian Church. Funeral services were held July 25, 2007 in Ray Memorial Presbyterian Church. The Rev. George Rogers officiated and interment was in Hill Haven Memory Gardens. Pallbearers were Larry Brown, Mike Chestnut, Brian Adcock, Billy Conner, Toby Coker and Wayne Wages.

Harriette Baccus
Harriette Baccus, age 85 of Conyers, died Wednesday, July 25, 2007. She is survived by sons; Brian Lee Baccus, Ellijay, Hal Baccus, Conyers, Donald J. Baccus, Covington; sisters, Elizabeth McDowell Walker, Destin, FL, Jean McDonald, Monroe; grandchild, Paige Elizabeth Hegert, Ellijay; great granddaughter, Stella Hegert, Ellijay. Mrs. Baccus was a member of First Baptist Church of Monroe, worked for the Centers for Disease Control for over 22 years and was a member or the Monroe Garden Club and other cultural and civic groups. Funeral services were held, Friday, July 27, 2007 at the First Baptist Church at 1:00 p.m. with Dr. Glen Money officiating; interment was at Resthaven cemetery in Monroe. Helen Reading, 82 of Monroe died on July 19, 2007. She was born on Aug. 22, 1924 in Tipton, OK to the late Loie Tarpley Farber and the late Dave Farber. She was preceded in death by her daughter: the late Jonell Reading Carder. Surviving are: husband: James William Reading, Monroe; sons and daughters-in-law: Jimmy and Deborah Reading, Duluth and Chuck and Kit Reading, Bakersfield, CA; daughter and sons-in-law: Anita and Blake Pettus, Monroe and Troy Carder, Snellville; sisters: Neva Chandler, Pixley, CA, Wanda Miller, Santa Clarita, CA, and Norma Day, Hawthorne, NV. Funeral Services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 23 at the chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Frye officiating. Interment followed at Hill Haven Cemetery.

Nan Braswell, 63 of Monroe died on July 15, 2007. She was born on August 4, 1943 in Walton County to the late Floria Crockett Cochran and the late Benjamin Masters Cochran. She was preceded in death by her husband: the late Gene Braswell; daughter: the late Chris Brooks: sister: the late Pearl Cochran. Surviving are: son and daughter-in-law: David and Mandy Braswell; daughter and son-in-law: Alana and Tony Batchelor, Monroe; sisters: Lois Carter, Monroe, Wynette Stevens, Good Hope, Jayne Crane, Oxford and Elizabeth Langford, Daleville, AL; eight grandchildren. Funeral Services were held at 2p.m. on Tuesday, July 17 at the chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the Rev. David Braswell and the Rev. Tony Batchelor officiating. Interment followed at Resthaven Cemetery. Meadows Funeral Home Inc. was in charge of the arrangements.

Albert L. Thompson, Jr. of Covington, died July 20, 2007 at the age of 55. Mr. Thompson worked a a carpenter, was a gun collector, and enjoyed hunting and fishing. A loving and devoted husband, father and Paw-Paw, he was preceded in death by his father: Albert Lamar Thompson, Sr. and two sisters: Evelyn Thompson and Mary Allgood.

Gordon Livingston McCully
Gordon Livingston McCully, 70, of Monroe passed away Saturday, July 14, 2007. Gordon was born in Hartford, Connecticut on Sept. 4, 1936, son of Albert Beal McCully and Ruth Misel McCully. Surviving are his wife: Thelma A. McCully; daughters: Pamela McCully Lesch, Sheila A. Saginar, and Jennifer E. Miller; as well as sons-in-law: Dr. James Lesch and Dr. Keith Miller. He has seven grandchildren: Jordan Lesch, Culley Lesch, Olivia Lesch, Alaina Saginar, Connor Miller, Kalli Miller, and Kole Miller. Mr. McCully was the captain of the Fort Lauderdale High School Flying L's tennis team, He was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity at the University of Florida, as well as the captain of the Gators' tennis team. He honorably served our nation in the United States Army and was a true animal lover.

Surviving are parents: Charles and Carol Gray, Social Circle; sisters and brothers-in-law: Tracy and Larry Argo, Huntsville, TX, Kelley and Chad Burnett, Lawrenceville, Margaret Rohan and David Browning, Lawrenceville, Lynn and Monty Wyrick, Lawrenceville. Funeral Services were held at 2pm on Monday, July 16 at the chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Malcom officiating. Interment followed at Social Circle City Cemetery.

Mr. Donald Howell Palmer, 70 of Augusta, Georgia enter into rest on Sunday, June 24, 2007. He was the beloved son of the late Albert Palmer and the late Frances Smith Palmer. A native of Loganville, Georgia, Mr. Palmer was previously employed in sales. He is survived by two daughters: Donna Palmer (Lief) of Atlanta, GA. and Patty Maloney (Joe) of Lawrenceville, GA; one brother:; Tom Palmer (Anne) of Martinez, GA; one sister: Cathy Sizemore of Loganville, GA; two grandchildren: Mark Maloney and Megan Maloney; one great grandchild: Rory Elizabeth Maloney and two nephews. A private service will be held.

Luther “Skip” Privette
Luther “Skip” Privette of Tetonia, Idaho, formally of Loganville, passed away May 14,2007. Skip was born Sept. 30, 1949 in Statesville, NC to Luther and Frances Privette. He served in the US Army in Vietnam and in the US. He worked for Western Electric, AT &T; and Lucent technologies and retired in 2000 after 28 years of service. Skip and his wife, Suzanne retired to Idaho in April of 2006.

Harold R. Minor
Harold R. Minor, age 85 of Loganville, formerly of Suwanee, passed away on Tuesday, July 10, 2007. Funeral services were held at 11:00 AM Saturday, July 14 in the Lawrenceville Chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home. The Rev. Carl Leach, Jr., and Minister Don Hardison, officiated. Burial was in White Chapel Memorial Gardens in Duluth. Mr. Minor was a member of Loganville Christian Church, retired with Gwinnett County in Motor Maintenance, member of the coffee club at McDonald’s in Loganville, and an avid gardener until his death. He was preceded in death by his wife: Willie B. Herrington Minor in 2002 and grandson: Anthony Raymond Minorin 1977.

James B. Jones, age 81 of Loganville, died Saturday, July 7, 2007. Loving Husband, Father and Grandfather considered by his family as perfect. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, July 11, 2007 in the Loganville Chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home. The Rev. Ben Layman will officiate. Interment will follow at Roseland cemetery in East Point. A retired supervisor with the United States Postal service. Mr. Jones was a WW II Army Air Corps Veteran and a member of the Westside Baptist Church in Snellville. He is survived by his wife of 33 years: Betty L. Jones of Loganville; children: Donald and Judy Hoover of Bethlehem, Fred and Judy Hoover of Monroe, Lucy Alexander of Baldwin, Paul and Joyce Jones of Loganville, Herb and Jody Hoover of Bethlehem, Donnie & Diane Hoover of Loganville; 8 Grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mr. Milton A. Whitley, 90 of Social Circle passed away on July 10, 2007 at the Monroe Nursing Home, Monroe Regional Medical Center. The son of the late John and Adie Whitley, Mr. Whitley was a life long resident of Walton County. He was married for over 64 years to the true love of his life the late Callie Burson Whitley, also a Walton County native.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 7, 2007 at 3:00 PM at the chapel of Lord and Stephens East. Interment was in Athens Memory Gardens. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law: Al and Lisa Hancock of Monroe;; sisters and brother-in-law: Mildred Mealor of Hull, Alice and Johnny Chambers of Colbert; brothers and sisters-in-law: Jerry and Jenny Helton of Colbert, Jack and Janice Helton, Leonard and Susan Helton all of Hull, Ronnie and Dot Helton of Monroe; 1 grandson: Blake Hancock. Pallbearers were Jimmy Tucker, Larry Tucker, Keith Callaway, Ken Callaway, Wesley McDonald, and Otis Larkin.

She was preceded in death by her husband: the late Harris Cleveland Peters. She was a member of the West End Baptist Church in Social Circle. Surviving are: daughters and sons-in-law: Sherrie and Douglas Parham, Social Circle, Jean and Larry Griggs, Cumming and Marie Chasteen, Athens; son: Gerald Peters, Social Circle; brother: Lamar Richardson, Jonesboro; three grandchildren; three step-grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Survivors are: wife: Ellen Scroogs, Statham; daughters: Deirdre Wright, Statham and Pamela Graham, Old Hickory, TN; brothers: Jack Scroogs and W.L. Scroogs, both of Monroe, and David Scroogs, Lawrenceville; sisters: Ann David, Lawrenceville, Jean Hollis and Joy Martin, both of Monroe, Sue Morgan and Kathy Casper, both of Tignell; three grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Ann Marie Thompson Tilley, 75 of Monroe, GA died following an extended illness Thursday, August 9, 2007 at the Rockdale County Medical Center. The family will receive friends and family from one to three o’clock on Saturday, August 18 at the Little-Davenport Funeral Home in Gainesville, GA. A memorial service will follow at three o’clock in the chapel.

Esther Ruth Brown, 93 of Monroe, died on Aug. 10, 2007. She was born in Dodge County on Feb. 22, 1914 to the late Willie Fisher Buchanan and the late Frances Evans Buchanan. She was preceded in death by her husband: the late Ellis Issac Brown; daughter: the late Carolyn B. Durden. Surviving are: son and daughter-in-law: Bobby and Mattie Brown, Conyers; daughters and sons-in-law: Judy Daniel, Monroe, Gail Hughes, Monroe, Regina and Billy Stewart, Covington, and Larry Durden, Monroe; sister: Juanita Henley, Danielsville; brother: Rube Buchanan, Hawkinsville; 20 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and 19 great-great grandchildren.

James William Reading
James William Reading, 92 of Monroe died on Aug. 6, 20047. He was born in Delaware County, IN., on Jan. 9, 1915 to the late Charles Wesley Reading and the late Nellie Tolle Reading. He was preceded in death by his wife: the late Helen Mae Farber Reading; and daughter: the late Jonell Reading Carter

Audrey Louise Woodard
Mrs. Audrey Louise Woodard, 91 of Madison died at her home July 26, 2007. Mrs. Woodard was born Audrey Starling on August 16, 1915 in Abbeyville, AL to George and Maggie Jones Starling. She married the now late, Henry Milton Woodard. They spent much of their life in Florida. Mrs. Woodard worked as a sterilization tech in the health care industry. She moved to Madison eleven years ago. She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

David Douglas Willoughby, II
David Douglas Willoughby, II age 26 of Monroe died July 28, 2007. A native of Fulton County, he had resided in Monroe for ten years moving from Alpharetta. He was employed at the Wal-Mart Distribution Center. He graduated from Milton Hugh School in 1999 and was a member of the South Gwinnett Baptist Church. Funeral services were held July 31, 2007 in the South Gwinnett Baptist Church, Snellville, GA. The Rev. Harold Thomas officiated and interment was in Westlawn Memorial cemetery in Monroe.

Eugene Evans, 78 of Monroe died Sept. 26, 2007. A native of Oconee County, he was a son of the late Willie Evans and Alma Patton Evans. He was a retired employee of Oxford Mfg. Co. Funeral services were held Sept. 30, 2007 in the chapel of Arthur Bowick Funeral Home. The Rev. Billy Autry and The Rev. David Laycock officiated and interment was in the Social Circle Cemetery. Pallbearers were The Rev. David Shelton, David Pace, Brandon Williams, Jeff Walker, Jonathan Williams and Doug Evans.

Frankie Joe Davis, 54 of Monroe died Sept. 30, 2007. Graveside services were held Oct. 2, 2007 in Hill Haven Memory Gardens. The Rev. Hoyt Johnson and The Rev. Lonnie Blackmon officiated. He is survived by his widow: Terrie Gordon Davis; children: Harlen Davis of Monroe, Danny Guthrie of Maysville, Taylor Davis of Monroe and Cindy Cole of Madison; sisters: Joan (Marvin) Sorrels and Brenda (Dennis) Tullis both of Monroe and Renee’ (Sam) King of Blythewood, SC; brothers: Jerry Davis of Monroe, Jimmy (Karen) Davis of Good Hope and Jeff Davis of Cartersville; step-daughter: Dana Whitmore; 3 grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter: Tia Davis.

Beatrice J. Moree, 61 of Monroe died October 3, 2007. A native of Gwinnett County, she was a licensed practical nurse having worked for Park Place Nursing and Rehab in Monroe and Russell Nursing Home in Winder. Funeral services were held October 5, 2007 in the chapel of Arthur Bowick Funeral Home, Monroe. The Rev. Luther Britt officiated and interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Winder, GA.

Harriett G. Jones, 69 of Monroe died Sept. 27, 2007. A native of College Park, GA. She was a daughter of the late Harold W. Gunn and Cora Lee Lundsford Gunn. She moved to Monroe in 1992 from Ft. Myers, FL. and was a registered nurse having graduated from Johns Hopkins School of Nursing. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. Funeral services were held Sept. 29, 2007 in the Monroe First Baptist Church. Dr. Glen H. Money officiated and interment was in Westlawn Memorial Cemetery.

Henry Stuhr West Ashley Chapel on Monday, Oct. 1, 2007 at Eleven o’clock. Interment was in Riverview Memorial Gardens. Kaitlin was born in Charleston, SC. Sept. 26, 2006, the daughter of Spencer Andrew Nash and Caroline McGarity Nash.

Thelma Jo Clegg, 74, died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2007 at St. Mary’s Hospice House. A Native of Monroe, GA, she was the daughter of the late Dewey J. and Jeanette Peebles Clegg. She was also preceded in death by her nephew, David H. Gilbert. Thelma was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church and retired as a teacher from Roosevelt High School after 25 years of service.

Fred Whatley, 39, died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2007 at his residence. Born in Newton County he was the son of Patricia Whatley Thomas and step father Timmy Thomas, and the son of late Stewart Swan Whatley. Fred was a member of Ross Chapel Baptist Church where he was a deacon, trustee and Sunday School Teacher of the Teenage Class. He was a supervisor for Pike Electric where he had worked for 20 years. Survivors in add to his mother include his wife of 16 years, Kerri Whatley, daughters: Kelsey and Kaylee Whatley; brothers: Stewart Swan Whatley, Robert Ozane Whatley, Jeff Whatley; sister: Ellyn Cannington and many nieces and nephews.

Margaret Kidd Taylor
Margaret Kidd Taylor, 83 died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2007. She was born in Athens, Ga on July 20, 1924 to the late Claude and Maude Kidd. A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. on Sept 28 in Maplewood Cemetery. She lived in Wilson since her marriage in 1946. She was a devoted wife and mother. She was an active member of Westview Christian Church until her illness prevented her from attending. Surviving to cherish her memory is her husband of 61 years, Gray Taylor; two sons: Ed Taylor and wife, Judy of Rocky Mount and Don Taylor of the home; sister-in-law: Nancy Kidd, Monroe and special friend Tippy Windstead.

Jeffrey Bruce Adams
Jeffrey Bruce Adams, 46 died on Aug. 11, 2007. He was born on Oct. 14, 1960 to the late Larry J. Adams and Gloria Briscoe. He graduated from Avondale Estates High School in 1977. He entered the Marine Corp on Dec. 12, 1977 and was discharged on Dec. 4, 1981. While in the Marine Corp, he advanced from Lance Corporal to Sergeant. He also attended Coastal Carolina Community College in Jacksonville, NC where he studied Criminal Law. He then moved to Monroe and managed the Monroe Motor Inn. Jeff then moved to New York, where he worked at Cumming Engine Co. While in New York, he received his New York Realty License. He moved to Denver, CO where he lobbied for people with Mental Health Problems. He lobbied with alot of heart for the care of people with Mental Health Problems because he was a mental health patient himself. Upon moving back to Georgia he held numerous jobs and moved frequently because of his declining mental health. At the end of his life he lived as a street person. Jeff died on Aug. 11, 2007 under a tree off of Cleveland Ave. in Atlanta.
