Gary Lemonds
Gary Lemonds, age 61 of Social Circle, died on Jan. 8, 2009. He was born in Walton County on May 13, 1947 to Dorothy McDaniel Lemonds and the late Bryant Lemonds. He was a lifelong citizen of Walton County, real estate broker, and decorated Vietnam veteran. He was inducted into the Ranger Hall of Fame at Fort Benning in Columbus, GA, and he was dedicated to his country and those who served. He was also the founder of the Ride for America Memorial Day Parade, started in 1999.

Surviving are daughters and son-in-law: Kimberly Lemonds of Social Circle, Jennifer and Jason Needham of Jersey; mother: Dorothy Lemonds of Social Circle; sister and brother-in-law: Glenda and Tom Lewis of Monticello; grandchildren: Jessica Lemonds, John Cwiek, and Pressley Needham, one niece and one nephew.

Funeral Services were held on Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009 at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the Rev. Gene Hammonds and the Rev. Thomas Ghann officiating. The eulogy was given by friends, Tommy Clack and Stan Mauldin. Interment followed at Social Circle City Cemetery.

Eleanor James
Eleanor James, age 88 of Monroe, died on Jan. 13, 2009. She was born in Kennebec County, Maine on Oct. 11, 1920 to the late Leroy Welsh and the late Ethel Welsh. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Phillip James, Sr., her sisters, the late Mildred Slocum and the late Marguerite Phillis.

Surviving are: daughters and sons-in-law: Janice and Gerry Cameron of Chelsea, ME, Joyce and Brian Nelson of Dacula, Carol and Ross Cook of Charleston, NH; son and daughter-in-law: Phillip and Helen James of Monroe; sister: Rowena James of Plantsville, CT; brothers: Leroy Welsh, Jr. of Clinton, ME and William Welsh of Freeport, ME; 14 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held on Friday, Jan. 16, at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the Rev. Brad Waters officiating. Interment followed at Westlawn Cemetery.

Bobby Ray
Bobby Ray, age 72 of Covington, passed away Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009. Memorial Services were held 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, in the Loganville Chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home with Pastor Billy Mueller officiating.

A member of Cornerstone Community Church, McDonough, GA, Mr. Ray was preceded in death by his parents: Earl and Alma Ray and brother: Sidney Ray.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years: Faye Ray; children: Tracy and Lucinda Ray, Canton; Cindy and Eddy Wright, McDonough; Kenny Ray and girlfriend, Lynn Wells, Stone Mountain; Sherry Mowdy, Monroe; Kristy and B. T. Turner, Monroe; grandchildren: Rananda and Scott Cash, Blake Ray, Justin Turner, Keegan Ray, Bobby Turner, Sam Conway, Logan Turner, Caris Wright; great grandchildren: Sydney, Hunter, Christian and Izabella Cash; brothers: Greg Ray, TX; Jeff Ray, TX; sister: Carol Watson, TX; several nieces and nephews.

Cathy Perkins Conner
Cathy Perkins Conner, age 59 of Monroe, passed away Friday, Jan. 9, 2009.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 12, 2009 in the Monroe Chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home with the Rev. David Laycock officiating. Burial followed at Rest Haven Cemetery. A member of First United Methodist Church of Monroe, Mrs. Conner was a legal secretary.

She is survived by her husband: Howard Conner, Monroe; children: Shane and Stacie Abernathy, Cartersville; K. L. and Martha Conner, Bogart; Jody Conner, Winterville; Mandy Conner, West Palm Beach, FL; grandchildren: Riley Abernathy; Kennon and Reese Conner; sister: Carol Head, Monroe.

Mike Smith
Mike Smith, age 52 of Loganville, passed away Friday, Jan. 9, 2009.

Funeral Services were held 2pm Monday, Jan. 12, 2009 in the Loganville Chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home with the Rev. Carl V. Butcher, Jr. officiating. Burial followed at Carter Memorial Gardens, Loganville.

A previous employee of Solo in Conyers, Mr. Smith was a maintenance worker for Nisshinbo Automotive Manufacturing, Covington.

He is survived by his father: Thomas E. Smith, Monroe; mother: Mabel M. Roden, Loganville; brothers and sisters-in-law: Tony and Holly Smith, Trenton, FL; Scott and Rhonda Smith, Loganville; sister: Jennifer Slusher, Loganville; niece: Bonnie Malcom; great nephew: Daniel Pranjkic, both of Lawenceville.

Dr. Kenneth Fortson
Dr. Kenneth Fortson, age 57 of Social Circle, died on Jan. 7, 2009. He was born in Elbert County on July 4, 1951 to Margaret Dye Fortson and the late Weymon Fortson. He was preceded in death by Kyle’s son, the late Frank Scott Williams.

Kenneth was a veterinarian in Social Circle for over 20 years and was well respected and loved by all who knew him. God used him in many ways, not only in his practice, but also in the community to reach others for the Lord. Kenneth was an organizer and board member of the Social Circle Christian Learning Center, an organizer of a men’s community outreach group which held an annual men’s retreat teaching Christian leadership and discipleship. He held a weekly bible study in his home for men in his church and community and was a Sunday school teacher at his local church. Most importantly, Kenneth loved the Lord; he loved his wife, Kyle, his children, grandchildren and great granddaughter and was a great foundation for Christ in his family.

Surviving are wife: Kyle Blackwood Fortson of Social Circle; mother: Margaret Dye Fortson of Jackson; sons and daughters-in-law: Marcus Kenneth and Laurie Fortson of Madison, Henry Stephen and Janis Williams of Social Circle; the late Frank Scott Williams and Beth Williams of Social Circle; daughters and sons-in-law: Karen Fortson and Stewart Thigpen of Statesboro; Paige and Tim Mitchell of Madison; Sister: Carol and Paul Spratlin of Auburn, AL; Brother and sister-in-law: Keith and Gay Fortson of Jackson; grandchildren: Peyton Fortson, Jackson Thigpen, Drew and Autumn Dellinger, Kayla Mitchell, Ryan Mitchell, Parker Williams, Christian Williams, Macy Williams, Nicholas Williams, Landon Williams, David Unruh and Daniel Unruh; great granddaughter: Marley Dellinger, and several nieces and cousins.

John Lee Durden
John Lee Durden, age 83 of Monroe, died on Jan. 8, 2009. He was born in Walton County on August 15, 1925 to the late Eugene Durden and the late Eula Hooten Durden. He was preceded in death by his wife, the late Annie Ruth Durden.

Surviving are: son: Gene Durden of Monroe; sister: Maudie Cooper of Snellville; grandchildren: David Durden of Gainesville, Joey Durden of Monroe; four great grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral Services were held on Saturday, Jan. 10th at 2:30p.m. at the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the Rev. Billy Autry and the Rev. Buster Brown officiating. Interment followed Hill Haven Cemetery.

Diane Yancey
Diane Yancey, age 58 of Walton County, died Jan. 3, 2009.

She is survived by daughter: Michelle and Rick Dupree, Oxford; sons: Wayne and Ginger Yancey, Loganville, Michael Yancey, Conyers; mother: Delores Roberts, Good Hope; father: Jim and Hazel Alexander, Commerce; brother: Ed Alexander, Dacula; grandchildren: Taylor Haney, Sophia Dupree, Hannah Yancey, Hope Yancey, Halaina Yancey, Blake Yancey, Austin Yancey, Corey Yancey, Lauren Yancey; niece, Katherine Alexander; and her loving cocker spaniel Casey.

Ms. Yancey was a member of First Baptist Church Conyers.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009 at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church Conyers with Pastor Howard Greer and Dr. Jeff Meyers officiating; interment will follow at Center Hill Baptist Church, Loganville. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Scot Ward's Harry White Chapel.

Gail Malcom
Gail Malcom, age 61 of Monroe, died on Dec. 29th. She was born in Walton County on Dec.23, 1947 to the late Roger Malcom and the late Daisy Malcom.

She was a lifelong member of Union Chapel United Methodist Church.

Surviving are: husband: Tommy Malcom, Jr.; daughters and sons-in-law: Georgia Ann Malcom of Monroe, Juan and Dena Garcia of Good Hope, and Matthew and Carrie Watson of Monroe; grandchildren: Suzie and Daisy Malcom; Rebecca, Hope and Grace Maldonado, and Ellie Garcia; and brother: G.R. Malcom of Monroe.

Memorial Services were held on Saturday, Jan. 3rd at 2 p.m. at Union Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Laycock officiating.

Jim Lewis
Jim Lewis, age 60 of Monroe, died on Dec. 30, 2008. He was born in Fulton County on Oct. 22, 1948 to the late Charles Lewis and the late Grace Ison Lewis Betts.

Surviving are: daughters and sons-in-law: Michael and April Lewis Mobley of Bethlehem, Lauren Renee Lewis of Buford, Kathleen Terry Lewis of Monroe, and Jamie Breanna Lewis of Monroe; grandchildren: Austin Lewis of Bethlehem, Trenton Mobley of Bethlehem, and Mychaela Mobley of Bethlehem; brother and sister-in-law: Tom S. and Barbara Betts of Acworth.

He was a member of Campton United Methodist Church.

Funeral Services were held on Friday, Jan. 2nd at 2p.m. at Campton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Draper and the Rev. Grady Vance officiating. Interment followed at Campton United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Lester R. Whisenhunt
Lester R. Whisenhunt, 79, went home to be with the Lord, Jan. 3, 2009, at Abbey Hospice. Mr. Whisenhunt was employed by the U.S. Government for 42 years and was a member of Hebron Baptist Church, Dacula, GA. He enjoyed his family, gardening, traveling, discussing his life and past military life.

He was preceded in death by parents Charles Ellis and Rheba Pearl Pettypool Whisenhunt; brother: Melvin Whisenhunt; grandchild: Johnathan Lyon; and great-grandchild: Skylor Whisenhunt.

Mr. Whisenhunt is survived by wife: Alice M. Whisenhunt, Monroe; daughters: Renea Lyon, Lawrenceville; Jody Williams, Jefferson; sons and daughter-in-law: SFC Lester Randal and Carol Whisenhunt, Walnut Grove; David John Whisenhunt, Ranger, Ga; grandchildren: Megan Wingo, Amber Whisenhunt, Spc. 4 Jason Whisenhunt, Jesse Lyon, Jonah Whisenhunt, Amanda Lyon, Jacob Whisenhunt, Grace Williams, Jeremy Orr; great-grandchildren: Jaden Whisenhunt Grant, Genna Whisenhunt; sisters: Mary Ellen Johnson, Mt. Vernon, IL; Edna Denham, Minooka, IL; Charlene Williamson, Trenton, IL; Sue Wolf, Bonnie, IL; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 5 at 2 p.m., at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home. The Rev. Jim Maston and Mr. Robert Bailey officiated the service, and interment followed in Lawnwood Memorial Park.

Sammie Junior Brown
Sammie Junior Brown was born on July 10, 1933 to the late Sampson Brown and the late Pearline Johnson.

Raised in Walton County and worked at JD Construction for 20 years and at the Bay Station where everybody knew him. He was an outgoing, well-spoken person, he always kept a smile on his face. Mr. Brown was a lover of Sam Cooke’s music (a change is gonna come), he loved to watch Walker Texas Ranger and Wrestling, and he loved to tell jokes. He loved for his grandkids to brush his hair and beard.

On December 27, 2008 Sammie Junior Brown departed this earthly life. He was preceded in death by a son: Sanders Alexander.

He is survived by: his loving wife of 50 years: Barbara Brown; sons: Darrell and Antonio Brown; daughters: Savannah Broughton, Fran Brown and Cynethia Brown; daughter-in-law: L’Tanya Brown; grandchildren: Shanethia Brown, Andrianna Brown, Antoria Brown, Antiana Brown, Shanterica and Sharmaisha Preston, Jarvis Norman; god child: Willie Crutchfield, Jr.; brother: Andrew Brown; sister-in-law: Bennie Ruth Carroll; a host of nieces and nephews; precious mother-in-law: Eula Mae Willingham.

Funeral Services were held on Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Young Funeral Home.

Violet Lord Lowe
Violet Lord Lowe, age 91 of Good Hope, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009 at Good Hope Christian Church with the Revs. Willis Lumpkin, Kenneth Courts, Morris Little, Doyle Wallace and Ray Brooks officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Mrs. Lowe worked as a CNA and volunteer at Family Life Enrichment Center and was a member of Good Hope Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband: Harris Lowe; brothers: Talmadge Lord and James Lord; and is survived by daughters and sons-in-law: Sue and Bill Shirey of Athens and Betty and Nelson Bowers of Good Hope; brother: Charlie Lord of Good Hope; sisters: Mary Alice Harrill of Slater, SC and Doris Lowe of Monroe; grandchildren: Lee and Cindy Shirey, Dawn and Chris Blizard, Jeff and Erin Winter-Shirey, Ben and Melody Bowers, Matt and Jenny Bowers, Christy and Justin Myers; 12 great-grandchildren.

Benny E. Wall

Benny E. Wall, age 59 of Monroe, died on Dec. 21st. He was born in Clarke County on Feb. 23, 1949 to the late Euell Wall and the late Lucille Wall.

He was preceded in death by his sister, the late Lois Stowe.

Surviving are: wife: Yvonne Wall of Monroe; Son and daughter-in-law: Michael Benjamin and Vicki Wall of Monroe; daughter and son-in-law: Dena and Brian Young of Monroe; sisters: Ruth Burt of Monroe, Mary Ann Jones of Monroe; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, Dec. 23rd at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the Rev. Darrell Phillips and the Rev. Kenneth Deitle officiating.
