Melissa Hale Matthews,
Melissa Hale Matthews, 39, of Watkinsville, died at home Monday, Aug. 10, 2009, after a courageous 3 year battle with breast cancer. Melissa was born in Athens, on Feb. 4, 1970, the youngest child of Billy and Gloria Hale, and grew up in the Five Points neighborhood. She attended Barrow Elementary School and Clarke Middle School, and graduated from Clarke Central High School in 1988. She earned both a B.A. in Psychology (1992) and a Masters in School Counseling (1998) from the University of Georgia. She served as a school counselor at Walker Park Elementary School in Walton County, Georgia through 2003. While earning her masters degree, Melissa worked at SunTrust Bank where she met the love of her life, Rob Matthews. They married on Nov. 5, 2000. The greatest joy of their life was the birth of their daughter, Macey, in 2004. Melissa loved her life and was devoted to her husband, daughter, family, and friends. She was a lifelong, dedicated member of Young Harris Memorial United Methodist Church, where she served on various committees and was active in the United Methodist Women organization. She was known for her infectious smile and passion for life, and especially enjoyed annual family beach trips to St. Simons and Hilton Head.

Charlie Frix
Charlie Frix, age 38 of Bogart, died on Aug. 4, 2009. He was born in Walton County on April 9, 1971 to Lantis and Louise Frix. He is survived by his wife, Selina Kimbrell Frix of Bogart; sons, Adam Burch of Bogart, Kody Rogers of Bogart, and Logan Hall of Bogart; daughters, Samantha Frix of Between and Carlie Frix of Bogart; parents, Lantis and Louise Frix of Social Circle; sisters, Debbie Clark of Monroe and Patsy Bradford of Social Circle; brother, Mark Frix of Social Circle. Funeral Services were held on Friday, Aug. 7, 2009 at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the Rev. Danny Sorrells officiating. Interment followed at Social Circle City Cemetery. Meadows Funeral Home, Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

David Martin Still
David Martin Still, 89 of Bethlehem passed away on July 31, 2009. Mr. Still was born in Walton County to the Late Mr. and Mrs. Jess and Sarah Elizabeth Thornton Still. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church where he was a Deacon for over 50 years. He was in the Army, serving during WWII where he achieved a bronze medal and four battle stars fighting in the European African and Middle Eastern Theater. He retired with the Barrow County School System as a bus driver and was a chicken farmer. He is survived by: wife, Mrs. Hazel McDaniel Still, Bethlehem; daughter, Linda Wilkins, Bethlehem; grandson, Mike Wilkins, Social Circle; two great grandchildren, Emily and Luke Wilkins; three brothers, Oren Still, Monroe, Williams Still, Bethlehem, Bennie Still, Dacula. Funeral Services were held at 2 p.m. on Aug. 2, at Smith Memory Chapel with the Rev. Johnny Wright and the Rev. Steve Ray officiating. Interment followed in Barrow Memorial Gardens. Memorial Contributions may be made to American Lung Association of Georgia, 2452 Spring Rd. Smyrna Ga. 30080. Smith Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Jean Arthur White Hoffman
Jean Arthur White Hoffman, 67, of Monroe, died peacefully on Aug. 1, 2009. She was born Jan. 19, 1942, in Rock Hill, SC to the late Mary Westbrook White and the late William M. White. She was preceded in death by her son, Richard Lewis Hoffman, Jr. and her sister, Maryann White Pugh. She is survived by her lifelong sweetheart, her husband Richard L. (Dick) Hoffman of Monroe and her daughter Janet Hoffman Dwyer, son in law Terry Dwyer, and grandsons sons Patrick and Joseph Dwyer, also of Monroe. She is also survived by her sister Betsy W. Bacon, brother in law John C. Bacon of Atlanta, brother in law David L. Hoffman, sisters in law Gay Hoffman, Mary Ann Hoffman, and nieces: Anna B. Moore, Sarah N. Bacon, Andrea L. Bacon and nephews: Sterling Bacon, Jim Moore, David Hoffman, Robert Hoffman, and Brill White Pugh. Countless additional relatives and friends treasure their memories while they mourn their loss.

"Jim" Booth Williams, Jr.
"Jim" Booth Williams, Jr. died peacefully at home at the age of 67 on July 28, 2009. He was born on Aug. 7, 1941 in Atlanta, Georgia to the late Frances Verdery and James Booth Williams. Jim is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 45 years, Nita Williams. They have two children, Beth (Bob) Fretz and Richard (Amanda Gotschall) Williams both of Atlanta. He is also survived by three granddaughters, Campbell, Sawyer and Summer Fretz; two sisters, Libba Williams McDonald of Atlanta and Louise Williams Baker of Waynesville, N.C. and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Jim grew up in Monroe, and graduated from Monroe High. Jim earned his architectural degree from Auburn University in 1964 and worked for the firm of Howell Rusk Dodson Architects in Atlanta. A Celebration of Life Service was held Friday, July 31st at 11 a.m. at Northwest Presbyterian Church at 4300 Northside Drive, Atlanta. Graveside service was held at Rest Haven cemetery in Monroe, at 2:30 p.m. After this service, the family received friends at the home of Charles and Veronica Sanders. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Building Fund at Northwest Presbyterian Church or to a charity of your choice. Arrangements by H.M. Robert Derek Johnson, born June 1, 1965 entered into rest on July 22, 2009. Derek is survived by his mother, Kaye and Bobby Peters; daughter, Katie Johnson; granddaughter, Kaylynn; son, Adam Johnson; sister, Sabrina Johnson; brother, Jeff Johnson; several nieces and nephews; dear friends, Bill and Julie Mitchell. Derek will be greatly missed by all who knew him. A memorial service was held in his memory on Saturday, Aug. 1st at 2 p.m. at Deep South Farms, Good Hope.

Glenda Faye Crawford, age 58 of Monroe, died on July 25, 2009. She was born in Walton County on Jan. 3, 1951 to the late Barney Cleveland Peters and the late Mary Leo Phelps Peters. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Bobby Eugene Crawford, and her brother, the late Barney Ray Peters. Surviving are: daughter: Melanie Pannell Bradberry of Bishop; son: David Brad Pannell of Valdosta; sister: Carol Brooks of Athens; brothers: Jessie Clay Peters of Monroe, Clifford Wayne Peters of Mansfield, William David Peters of Monroe, and Steven Jerrell Peters of Monroe; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. Grady “Mack” McCullers
Grady “Mack” McCullers, age 72 of Lithonia passed away Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009. Funeral Services were held Sunday, Sept. 20, at 2 p.m. in the Loganville Chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Moore officiating. Burial Sharon Baptist Church Cemetery, Loganville. Mr. McCullers was born and raised in the Sharon Community and a graduate of Monroe High School, employed by General Motors BOP Plant, Doraville and retired from Ironworkers Local #378 after 30 years of service in 1991. He was a member of the Lithonia Masonic Lodge #84 F & AM, Scottish Rite 32nd Degree, YAARAB Shrine of Atlanta and a Charter member of Loganville Shrine Club. He is preceded in death by his parents Euell Grady McCullers and Florence Witcher McCullers. He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Patricia Ann and Baxter Masters, Franklin, TN; nephews: Keith Brooks and Darin Masters, four great nephews and Longtime loving companion: Deana “Dee” Durham, Decatur, GA.

Mrs. Julia Cook Brackett
Mrs. Julia Cook Brackett of Athens, died on Friday, Sept. 18, 2009. She was preceded in death by Ernest Marshall Brackett, her husband of 58 years. Born in Walton County on July 9, 1908, she was the daughter of Benjamin Oscar and Gladys Lavinia Durden Cook. In 1923 Julia accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior. She was a member of Athens First Baptist Church. Mrs. Brackett attended the University of Georgia, earning a B.A. and M.A. From 1929-1935 she was a school teacher at Athens High School, Pannell School in Walton County and David C. Barrow Elementary School in Athens. She devoted the next two decades to her family and then continued her teaching career in seven elementary schools in Clarke County. John Kent Lawrence, III, age 44 of Cumming, formerly of Monroe, passed away Sept. 16, 2009. Memorial services will be held at 7 PM Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009 in the Monroe Chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home with the Rev. Hoyt Johnson officiating. Mr. Lawrence was a graduate of Monroe Area High School and of Georgia State University. Mr. Jack Glenn Parrish
Mr. Jack Glenn Parrish, age 47, of Jasper, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, from the Sosebee Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Ben Mock officiating. Interment followed in the Hickory Flat Cemetery. Mr. Parrish was a member of Woodstock First Baptist Church and retired as a Construction Superintendent. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Mary Parrish. Survivors include his wife, Mila Parrish of Jasper; children, Ashley Renee Parrish of Fort Riley, KS, Ryan Glenn Parrish and Amanda Dawn Parrish both of Jasper; sisters, Mary Louise Duren of Adel, GA and Bess Elizabeth Miller of Valdosta, GA; several nieces and nephews also survive. Rev. Franklin Eugene Walker
Rev. Franklin Eugene Walker, 74, died Sept. 3, 2009. A native of Ft. Payne, AL, he was a son of the late Henry and Pearlie Dennis Walker. Rev. Walker was a teacher for over thirty years, ten of which were at Loganville Primary School where he was principal. In 1997, Rev. Walker founded and served as pastor of Lexington Church of God. Funeral services were held Sunday, Sept. 6, at 2 p.m. at Cornerstone Church of God with Pastor Scott Sheppard and the Rev. Larry Timmerman officiating. Interment will be at Eternal Hills, Snellville, GA. Survivors include his wife, Diane Walker; son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Pat Walker of Lexington, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Kelley and Chris Griffin of Dacula, GA; sister, Frankie Greene of Ft. Payne, AL; grandchildren, Joseph Walker, Jacob Walker, Jessie (Chris) Compton, Connor Griffin, Chandler Griffin, Summer Talley and Savannah Talley; great grandchildren, McKenzie Compton and Callie Walker. Mary Kasparvich, age 85 of Monroe, passed away Dec. 27, 2009. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29, in the Stateroom of Tim Stewart Funeral Home in Monroe. Mrs. Kasparvich, a native of England, met her husband there during World War II. She played the organ and enjoyed painting with oils. She is survived by her husband, William Jay Kasparvich; daughter, Darlene Arnold of Monroe; son: Rob Kasparvich of Athens; daughter, Denese Goldberg of Roswell; one sister; two grandchildren, Brandi Lee and Kenny Goodin; five great-grandchildren. Woodrow Wilson Taylor
Woodrow Wilson Taylor of Austell passed away on Dec. 22, 2009. He was 94, and was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Alice Waldrop Taylor. Mr Taylor was a U.S. Navy Veteran of 20 years, serving in WWII, Korea and as a recruiter. He was a lifelong Presbyterian having served as Elder and Deacon in several churches and was a member of Austell Presbyterian Church. Survived by daughters, Henri Savage (Lanier), Martinez; Kitty Smith (Calvin), Monroe; Judy Griffin (Mike) , Adairsville; grandchildren, Robert (Courtney) Savage, Blythewood, SC; Beth Savage (Dave Hageman), Lynchburg, VA; Barry Palmer (Nancy) , Jacksonville, FL; Adam Palmer (Amanda), Baltimore, MD; Michael Smith (Amy), Dacula; Dana White (Kevin), Douglasville; Missy Black (Justin), Acworth; 11 great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Buena Taylor,Carroll County. Funeral Services were held Saturday, Dec. 26 at Davis-Struempf Funeral Home & Crematory Chapel, the Rev. David Pearce officiated with interment in Sunrise Memorial Park Cemetery. Ted W. Baker
Ted W. Baker, age 53 of Monroe, passed away Monday, Dec. 21, 2009. A Memorial Service was held Wednesday, Dec. 23, at 2:30 p.m. at Westlawn Memorial Cemetery, Monroe with the Rev. Brad Waters, Chaplin of Walton Co. Sheriffs Office and Brian Harmon, Chaplin Assistant officiating. Mr. Baker was a member of Campton United Methodist Church, a member of Campton Masonic Lodge # 566 and also a Shriner. He was employed as a firefighter for Walton County Fire Department for 20 yrs. Mr. Baker was a Deputy Coroner for Walton Co. 1999-2008 and became the Coroner in 2009. He was preceded in death by his father, Rev. Floyd Coleman Baker and mother, Martha Ann Baker. He is survived by his wife, Dianne Jackson Baker; children, Melanie Baker, Atlanta, Jason Baker, Monroe; sister, Pat and Chet Holliday, Statham; sisters-in-law, Shirley Sloan, Susan Jackson, both of Austell; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-laws, Esther and Lee Kirk, Good Hope; Steve and Wanda Jackson, Daytona, FL. and many nieces and nephews.
