Grover A. Montgomery, age 95 of Tucker formerly of Monroe, passed away Saturday, April 17, 2010. Funeral Services was held Monday, April 19, at 2 p.m. in the Loganville Chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home with the Rev. Phil Standridge and the Rev. Earl Partain officiating. Burial at Sorrells Springs Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Monroe. Mr. Montgomery is a retired farmer and formerly employed with Powers Sunshine Car Wash. He was preceded in death by wife, Dorothy Montgomery in 1976. He is survived by children, Catherine Montgomery, Tucker; Frances Costley, Tucker; Evelyn Edmondson, Tucker; Fay and Ronnie Parham, Loganville; Allen and Deborah Montgomery, Winder; Janice and Kenneth Hall, Dacula; 14 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Carroll Chambers
Mr. Carroll Chambers, age 73, of Monroe died April 20, 2010 at Abbey Hospice in Social Circle. Carroll was born May 26, 1936 in Walker County, the son of William Aaron Chambers and Myrtle Collins Chambers. He moved to Macon after high school graduation in 1954 where he went to work for AT&T.; Throughout his career with AT&T; and then Southern Bell, he moved throughout the southeast as a dedicated employee. He retired from Southern Bell in 1992. Carroll was an active member of First Baptist Church of Monroe where he served in the Wayfarer’s Ministry. He was predeceased by both of his parents, his brother, F.A. Chambers, and his sister, Beverly Ann Chambers Crawford. Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 53 years, Eleanor Rachels Chambers; his son Carroll Labron Chambers, Jr. and wife Kate, and their daughter Sloan; his son Stuart Alva Chambers and wife Amy, and their children: Ian, Aaron, Adam, and Chloe; and his daughter Rala Suzanne Chambers. He is also survived by his brothers, Wesley, Charles, and Bruce Chambers, and sister, Martha Chambers Ford. Also missing Carroll are numerous nieces and nephews.

Tennyson L. Knight
Tennyson L. Knight of Newborn, passed away April 19, 2010, at the age of 68. Mr. Knight was owner and operator of Knight Motors, and enjoyed working on cars, attending car auctions and fishing. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marion and Annie Martha (Ellington) Knight. Survivors include his daughters, Shearl Reddy of Suwanee, Patricia Hutcheson of Oxford, Kathy Knight, Deborah Daigle of Tucker, Teresa Knight, Amanda Knight, both of Newborn; sons, Michael Knight of Forsyth, Tennyson Larry Knight, Jr., of Newborn, Joseph Knight of Atlanta; many grandchildren; and one great-grandson. A Memorial Service for Mr. Knight was held Thursday, April 22, at 2 p.m. at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Rd., in Covington, with the Rev. Don Hardison officiating. 770-786-7062

Bobby Clay
Bobby Clay, age 64 of Monroe, died on April 10, 2010. He was born in Walton County on Sept. 16, 1945 to the late Early Arthur Clay and Luna Mae Carter Clay. He was preceded in death by his first wife, the late Willena Joy Clay; his daughters, the late Kimberly Kay Clay and the late April Joy Clay; and his brother, the late Billy Lee Clay. He is survived by his wife, Becky Green Clay of Monroe; Luna Mae Clay of High Shoals, sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Carmen Clay of Fairmont, Michael and Martha Clay of Conyers; sisters and brothers-in-law, Shirley and Jimmy Baker of Walnut Grove, Brenda and Jerry Colley of Bishop, and Beverly and Ray King of Watkinsville; and 10 grandchildren. Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, April 13, at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the Rev. Jason Rowe and the Rev. Roy Turk officiating. Interment followed at Hill Haven Cemetery. Meadows Funeral Home, Inc. was in charge of arrangements.

Charles Joseph “CJ” Parker
Charles Joseph “CJ” Parker of Covington, passed away April 11, 2010, at the age of 86. Mr. Parker was a member of Jersey United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. He was a farmer, and loved working with his livestock. Mr. Parker enjoyed gardening and collecting knives and antiques, but most important to him was God and his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Conner and Mehetabel (Mobley) Parker; three sisters and two brothers. Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Dorothy (Wiley) Parker, daughter and son-in-law, Claudia and Steven Lansburg of Lexington, SC; son, Garrett Parker of Covington; grandchildren, Margaret Ruth Lansburg, Joseph Sherwood Lansburg, both of Lexington, SC; brother, Edward Parker of Griffin.

Earl Wendell Acuff
Earl Wendell Acuff, age 77 of Loganville, passed away Tuesday April 13, 2010. Funeral Services were held Saturday, April 17, at 11 a.m. at Corinth Christian Church with Minister Don Hardison, Minister Lester Waters and Minister Larry Acuff officiating. Burial at Corinth Memorial Gardens. Mr. Acuff was originally from Chattanooga, TN and relocated to Atlanta area in 1957. He was a US Navy Veteran of the Korean Conflict. Mr. Acuff was the owner of Accounting & Tax Services of GA for 50 yrs. He was preceded in death by brother, Frank Acuff. He is survived by his wife of 57 yrs, Carolyn Ruth Acuff; children, Jerone and Margaret (Cissy) Acuff, Ellenwood, Perry and Lisa Acuff, Loganville; Keith and Katrina Acuff, FL; brother, Pharris and Polly Acuff, Dacula; sister, Kathleen and Buel (Hoot) Godfrey; six grandchildren; one great grandchild; sister-in-law, Laura Acuff and several nieces and nephews. John Norman Hannay
John Norman Hannay, 84, a native of Greensboro, passed away on Monday, April 12, 2010. Mr. Hannay was the son of the late John and Deasy Culbertson Hannay. He was a graduate of Greensboro High School. He served in the Navy during World War II as an Aviation Machinist’s Mate in the North African Theater. Upon his return from the war, he went to work for American General Insurance. He retired in 1980 as a longtime District Manager. Mr. Hannay worked at Athens BMW from 1984-2010. Mr. Hannay was the co-founder of the Northeast Georgia Ostomy Group. He was a longtime member of the Athens YMCA and served on the board of directors in an active as well as an emeritus member. He started playing volleyball at the age of 60 and over the next 13 years won several city, state, and regional tournaments. Mr. Hannay was a Mason, a Shriner, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post 2872 in Athens and a member of Prince Avenue Baptist Church. Survivors include his loving wife of 65 years, Sarah Glass Hannay of Athens; children, Richard Norman and Marsha Jones Hannay of Watkinsville and Edward Stephen (Sr) and Jan Weeks Hannay of Valdosta. Grandchildren are Drs. Richard Scott and Jennie Higdon Hannay, John Alexander Hannay, Michael Ryan Hannay, Sarah Allison and Charles Albert Shenton IV, Edward Stephen Jr and Brock Dantzler Hannay, and Elizabeth Kaitlyn Hannay. Great-grandchildren are Matthew Scott Hannay, William Hunter Hannay, Charles Albert Shenton V and John Robinson Shenton.

Larry W. Metcalf, Sr.
Larry W. Metcalf, Sr. age 78, of Monroe passed away on April 10, 2010. Born in Madison County to the late Mr. and Mrs. Garnett and Zelda Baker Metcalf. Mr. Metcalf was the Owner of Metcalf Plumbing and Electric. Preceded in death by a son, Billy Ray Metcalf. Survivors include: four sons, Larry Lamar Metcalf of Arcade, Frankie Metcalf of Bogart, Larry Metcalf Jr. of Monroe, Larry Metcalf III of Monroe; two daughters, Mildred Metcalf Reynolds of Winder and Tammy Metcalf Jones of Winder; 17 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; two sisters, Ruby Pruitt of Commerce, Emmie Ledbetter of Winder. Funeral Services were held on April 13 at 11 a.m. at Smith Memory Chapel with the Rev. Terry Brock officiating. Interment followed in Duluth City Cemetery.

Virginia Q. Rettberg, 88 of Good Hope passed away on April 8, 2010. She was a member of Winder First Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Homer and Mabel Anson Quonce; and her husband Frederick Arthur Rettberg. Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Elmer Greeson of Good Hope; daughter, Paula McIntyre of Winder; grandchildren, Mindy Greeson, Ricky Greeson, Alison Gaston and Brandon McIntyre; great grandchildren, Seth Gaston, Ansley Gaston and Brooklyn McIntyre. Savannah Mayfield
Savannah Mayfield, age 93 of Loganville passed away Thursday, April 8, 2010. Funeral Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday April 12, at Double Springs Baptist Church with remains placed in state at 1:30p.m. The Rev. Bill Carroll and the Rev. Scott Richardson officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery. A retired Teacher with Walton County School System, a graduate of Young Harris College, Class of 1938, graduate of University of Georgia, Class of 1944 with a BS degree in Education, and Class of 1951 with a Master’s degree, and past President of the Retired Teacher’s Association from 1978-1981, Miss Mayfield was a member of the Honorary Teachers Society, Delta Kapp Gamma, and Evergreen Garden Club. She was a member of Double Springs Baptist Church and also taught schools in Whitfield County and City of Atlanta. Miss Mayfield is survived by: sister, Kathryn Norris of Monroe, nephews, Leonard Norris of Atlanta, John Norris of Monroe and great niece, Elizabeth Norris of New York City.

Martha V. Morris
Martha V. Morris, age 81, died on Sunday, April 4, 2010 at her home in Ocean City. Born in Monroe, she was the daughter of the late Henry Dial and Bessie Gibson Dial. She is survived by her husband of 63 1/2 years, Howard Morris. She is also leaves a son, Jerry Morris and a daughter, Linda Johnson. She was beloved grandmother to three grandchildren, Christina Muccusker, Melody Morris And Jennifer Williams, and seven great-grandchildren, Allie Morris, Jeremy Johnson, Ryan, Matthew, and Sophia McCusker Malinda Williams and Aiden Bahn. Mrs. Morris graduated from Monroe High School, and devoted her life to her family as a mother and a grandmother. A service was held at The Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin on Thursday at 1 p.m. Chaplain Gail Mansell officiated. Interment followed at Sunset Memorial Park in Berlin.

Doris D. Walker, age 87 of Monroe, passed away April 29, 2010. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 2, in the Monroe Chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home with Kelly Teague, Sr. and Hillman Martin officiating. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens in Tucker. Mrs. Walker was preceded in death by her son George Teague. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Kelly and Glenda Teague, Sr. of Monroe; daughter-in-law, Monika Teague of Loganville; grandchildren, Kelly Teague, Jr. of Monroe, Tim Teague, Sr. of Covington, Steven Teague, Sr. of Winder, George Teague, Sr. of Commerce, Micah Teague, Sr. of Monroe, and Mike Teague of Duluth; 13 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Aycock was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and she attended the Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville. She is survived by her sister, Mary Inman Hill of Columbia, SC; nephew and wife, Jim and Ginger McCall of Buford; nieces, Julia Ellen Hill of Columbia, SC and Suzanne Merrill of Raleigh, NC; and nephew, John Pope, Jr., also of Raleigh, NC. Mary Frances Mims of Oxford, passed away Aug. 5, 2010, at the age of 85. Mrs. Mims enjoyed roller skating, traveling, and was considered an excellent cook. She and her husband, Kenneth, both enjoyed witnessing for the Lord. Mrs. Mims was a very devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar L. and Bessie (Chandler) Birdsong; great-grandson, Stanley Dean Johnson; sister, Rose Cobbs; and her brother, Ralph Birdsong. Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Kenneth Mims, Sr., of Oxford; son and daughter-in-law, Bryant and Brenda Mims of Newnan; daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and Zekie Breedlove of Monroe, Bonnie and Bobby DeLee of Oxford, Marcia and Keith Adkisson of Oxford; 19 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral Services for Mrs. Mims were held Saturday, Aug. 7, 2010, 2:00 PM, at First Baptist Church, Covington, with Pastor Jason Dees officiating, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. Samuel Jones Gibson (Paw Paw),
Samuel Jones Gibson (Paw Paw), 84, of Bethlehem, Georgia, went to be with the Lord on Aug. 4, 2010. He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Carrie Gibson, and nine brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife of more than 60 years, Nettie Jean Gibson; son, Barry Gibson, Norcross; daughters, Shelia (Jimmy) Fox, Bethlehem; Deanna (Kevin) McBurney, Athens; Deborah Jarrard, Bethlehem; and Sherri (Billy) Pike, Bethlehem; grandchildren: Amy Purcell, David Lee, Lisa Conner, Jamie Watson, Chelsea Norman, and B.J. Jarrard; five great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Gibson joined the Active Naval Reserves at the age of 17 and was stationed on the USS Nevada BB36 during World War II as an aviation electrician. With a talent for plants and landscaping, he started several nurseries after leaving the Navy. There are many properties in metro Atlanta whose beauty is the result of his handiwork. In 1972, he opened Riverside Azalea Farm in Bethlehem, Georgia. Known for his green thumb, especially with azaleas, he loved having his hands in the dirt and was always happy to share his knowledge of plants with others. He will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him. Private Memorial Services were held on Aug. 8th at Tim Stewart Funeral Home.

Bobby N. Durden
Bobby N. Durden of Loganville, passed away July 28, 2010, at the age of 78. He was a member of Corinth Christian Church, in Loganville. Mr. Durden was employed by Crawford Insulation & Fire Protection of Atlanta, for 35 years; and a member of the Local 669 Pipe Fitters Union. He enjoyed fox hunting and racing cars on dirt tracks. He was a strong, dependable, good man, and a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Mr. Durden was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Nellie Mae (Herring) Durden; and his parents, Grady and Mattie Durden. Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah and Tillman Johnson, Kitty and Boyd Banks, all of Loganville, Cindy and Al Jones of Winder; son and daughter-in-law, Teddy and Rhonda Durden of Loganville; sisters, Marguerite Young of Jackson, LaVerne Bowen of Monroe; grandchildren, Jody, Tracy, Heath, Stevie, Casey, David, Alicia, Shane, Amanda, Maranda, AJ, Mary, Tina; great-grandchildren, Destiny, Justin, Dale, Davey, Jason, Ashlyn, Emma; several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services for Mr. Durden were held Saturday, July 31, 11 a.m. at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 3134 Floyd Street, in Covington, with the Rev.
