Mrs. Autumn “Sissy” M. Barnes
Mrs. Autumn “Sissy” M. Barnes of Augusta entered into rest on Saturday, April 10, 2010, at University Hospital.

Mrs. Barnes, a graduate of Westside High School, was a native and lifelong resident of Augusta. She received a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from Augusta State University and a master’s degree in education from Cambridge College. Her teaching career began at Aldersgate United Methodist Church Preschool, where she taught for four years, and culminated at Garrett Elementary School, where she taught kindergarten for 10 years. Mrs. Barnes was a member of St. Mary’s on the Hill Catholic Church.

Funeral mass was held on Tuesday, April 13, 2010, at 3:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s on the Hill Catholic Church, with Fr. Gerald Ragan celebrant and Rev. Hal Hodgens officiating. Burial was in Westover Memorial Park.

Survivors include her husband, Gerald Barnes; daughters, Amelia and Mary Ashlyn; son, David, all of Augusta; parents, Mr. and Mrs. William “Billy” M. Mitchell Sr. of Augusta; four brothers, William “Bill” Mitchell Jr. (Janis) of Augusta, Craig S. Mitchell (Lisa) of Augusta, Kevin M. Mitchell (Kelly) of Lilburn, and Brian R. Mitchell (Shawn) of Richmond Hill; nieces and nephews, Mary Beth Mitchell of Augusta, Madeline and Maxwell Mitchell of Augusta, Jenny, Chelsea and Maddie Mitchell of Lilburn, Tyler and Connor Mitchell of Richmond Hill, Stephanie Sealey (Andy) of Evans, and Richard Bell of Avera; great-nieces and -nephews, Savannah Grace and Peyton Sealey of Evans; sisters-in-law, Peggy Barnes and Linda Bell; and caretaker, Diane Davis of North Augusta, S.C.

Pallbearers were Richard Bell, Chip Fulmer, Doug Holland, Bill Sherman, Tim Spivey, Mark Turner, Maxwell Mitchell, Tyler Mitchell and Connor Mitchell.

Memorials may be made to Walton Foundation for Independence, 1355 Independence Dr. Augusta, GA, 30901.

Thomas Poteet and Son Funeral Directors were in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Morris L. “Red” Grimes Sr.
Mr. Morris L. “Red” Grimes Sr., 91, of Swainsboro entered into rest on Tuesday, April 6, 2010, at Emanuel Medical Center.

Mr. Grimes, born in Emanuel County, had lived in Wadley, before returning to Swainsboro for the past 38 years. He was an insurance broker for 41 years, and was a WWII U.S. Army veteran, having serving in the infantry in the South Pacific.

Funeral services were held on Friday, April 9, 2010, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Tomlinson Funeral Home, with Elder Tommy Rountree and Rev. Tommy Pulliam officiating. Interment followed in the Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Sara P. Grimes of Swainsboro; son, Morris Lee Grimes Jr. of Swainsboro; daughter, Jan S. Grimes of Statesboro; sister-in-law, Martha Grimes of Twin City; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Chris Page, Randy Durden, Pete Rountree, Charles Flanders, Mickey Flanders, Kenneth Brown, Johnny Hairr, M. L. Reid and Glenn Grimes.

Tomlinson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Inez McGee Givens
Mrs. Inez McGee Givens of Waynesboro entered into rest on Friday, April 2, 2010.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 10, 2010, 1 p.m. at Straightgate Overcoming Church of God, with Elder Dock McKenzie officiating. Interment was in the Spring Bethel AME Church cemetery in Jefferson County.

Mrs. Susie B. “Sue” Hansard
Mrs. Susie B. “Sue” Hansard of Fayetteville entered into rest on Tuesday, April 6, 2010.

Mrs. Hansard was born Jan. 7, 1921, to Annie Mae and Otis Blissit in Luella, in Henry County, where she graduated from Henry County High School. Following her graduation from Draughon School of Commerce in 1939 she worked several years at the Morris Plan Bank in Atlanta. During this time she met her husband, Fred Hansard. They wed in 1944 and traveled the world as Fred served in the armed forces. Their five children were born in Germany, Cambodia, Texas, and Kansas. Retirement brought Sue and her family back to Georgia where they have lived since 1966. She was a long time member of College Park First United Methodist Church.

Funeral services were held on Friday, April 9, 2010, at 10 a.m. at College Park First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Beth Sanders officiating. Interment followed at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Col. Frederic E. Hansard; and son, Frederic Emile Hansard II.

Survivors include her daughters, Angela Camp of LaGrange, Deborah Rivers (John) of Fayetteville, and Julia Barmby (Ric) of Forest Park; son, Mike Hansard (Elaine) of Buford; brothers, James Blissit (Maryann) of Grovetown, Dr. Joseph Blissit (Jan) of McDonough; grandchildren, Andy Camp, Jac Camp, Michael Hansard, Deanna Hansard, Thomas Rivers, Clark Rivers, Jennifer Erickson, Ben Rivers, Laura Barmby, Beth Barmby; great-grandchildren, Walker Camp, Rory Camp, Sara Erickson, Caroline Erickson, Katie Erickson and Sally Erickson.

Parrott Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Charlotte Bryant Hill
Mrs. Charlotte Bryant Hill, 95, of North Augusta, S.C., entered into rest on Tuesday, April 6, 2010, at National Healthcare.

Mrs. Hill was a native of Bartow, making the Augusta area her home for most of her life. She was a member of St. Mark Methodist Church in Augusta. She was retired from St. Joseph Hospital where she was a secretary.

Graveside services were held Friday, April 9, 2010, at 1 p.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Park, with Dr. Dane G. Wagner officiating.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Lewis Hill Sr.; and son, John Lewis Hill Jr.

Survivors include her daughter, Clara (Ed) Bryant of North Augusta, S.C.; nephew, Ed (Martha) Moody Jr.; seven grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Pallbearers were Edward Bryant Jr., Joel Bryant, John Bryant, David Hill and Ed Moody.

Memorials may be made to the charity of ones choice.

Mrs. Helen Dupree Hillman
Mrs. Helen Dupree Hillman, 66, of Thomson entered into rest on Sunday, April 11, 2010, at McDuffie Regional Medical Center due to her battle with cancer.

Mrs. Hillman was the daughter of Claude and Lois Dupree. She was born and raised in Jefferson County and spent most of her childhood there. Mrs. Hillman worked the majority of her life at Thomson Company, and Stapleton Garment where she retired. After retirement she decided to get her G.E.D., and attend Augusta Technical College. She was a member of Reedy Creek Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13, 2010, at Reedy Creek Baptist Church, with Rev. John Jenkins officiating. Burial was in the Reedy Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Judy Dupree.

Survivors include her daughter, Kelly (Joe) Gunby, Thomson; four sons, Gary (Patsy) Hillman, Gibson, and Randy Hillman, Tony Hillman and Scotty Hillman, all of Thomson; two brothers, Wayne Dupree, Thomson, and Bobby “Bud” Dupree, Gibson; and seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were members of Reedy Creek Baptist Church.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the J.O.Y. Sunday School Class.

Mrs. Mary C. Ivey
Mrs. Mary C. Ivey, 76, entered into rest on Sunday, April 11, 2010, at Glendale Nursing Home in Wadley.

Mrs. Ivey was born in Jefferson County and was a resident of Glendale Nursing Home.

Graveside services were held on Tuesday, April 13, 2010, at 2 p.m. at Bethany Cemetery, with Rev. Truitt Leveritt officiating.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Evelyn Slater.

Survivors include two sons, John Ivey and Joe Ivey; and cousin, H.D. Daughtery.

Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Meriam Ann Newsome Kitchens
Mrs. Meriam Ann Newsome Kitchens, 87, of Martinez entered into rest on Monday, April 5, 2010, at 12:45 p.m. at the home of Joyce Davis in Martinez.

Mrs. Meriam was a native of Glascock County, and lived there all of her life. She was a member of the Gibson First Baptist Church, she worked at Kents Canning Company, and retired from Glascock County School lunchroom.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 8, 2010, at Gibson First Baptist Church, with Rev. Jarrod Adkins and Rev. Bill Seaman officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill” Oren Kitchens; son, James Oren Kitchens; brother, Gordon Tobe Newsome; and parents, Pierce and Anne Usry Newsome.

Survivors include two daughters, Joyce (James) Davis of Martinez, and Linda (Lester) Newsome of Gibson; eight grandchildren, Dales Davis, Lisa (Ricky) Rickerson, Larry (Sheltie) Newsome, Barry (Theresa) Newsome, Diane (Lanny) Sirois, Kevin (Amy) Kitchens, Shannon (Kevin) Hink and David (Nicole) Newsome; 19 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Virginia Thigpen of Augusta.

Pallbearers were Kevin Kitchens, Kevin Hink, Larry Newsome, Barry Newsome, Rickey Rickerson, Clayton Rickerson and Tyler Newsome.

Memorials may be made to the Regency Hospice, 2919 Suite A, Professional Pkwy, Augusta, GA, 30907, or Gibson First Baptist Church in care of Lisa Harrell.

Mrs. Mary Hattaway Lamb
Mrs. Mary Hattaway Lamb, 69, of Louisville entered into rest on Friday, April 9, 2010, in the Trinity Hospital in Augusta.

A native of Louisville, Mrs. Lamb was a daughter of the late John T. Hattaway Sr. and Maggie Lou Mullins Hattaway. For more than 25 years she worked for the Jefferson County Commission Office as County Clerk and was a member of Louisville United Methodist Church.

Funeral services were held 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 11, 2010, at Louisville United Methodist Church, with Rev. David Hibberts officiating. Burial followed in Louisville City Cemetery.

Mrs. Lamb was preceded in death by her parents; and four siblings, Margaret Walden, Edith Kelly, Barbara Jean Pennington and Wayne Hattaway.

Survivors include her husband of 48 years, William “Billy” Lamb of Louisville; son, William Joel Lamb (Anne) of Louisville; daughters, Lisa Johnson (Cliff) of Stapleton, and Lynn Miller (Roan) of Sandersville; eight grandchildren, Chip, Will and Alison Johnson, William and Ansley Lamb, and Maggie, Mary Frances and Matt Miller; brothers, John T. Hattaway Jr. and Jerry Hattaway, both of Louisville; sisters, Caroline Rowell of Norcross, and Ethel Davis of Louisville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Pallbearers were Bill Hattaway, Mike Hattaway, Johnny Davis, Mark Davis, Allen Davis, Al Kelly, Donnie Cobb, Barry Cobb, Scotty Hattaway and Cleve Lamb.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests, those desiring, please make memorial contributions to one of the following Louisville United Methodist Church, Thomas Jefferson Academy, or Brentwood School.

Mrs. Dahlia Virginia Dixon Miller
Mrs. Dahlia Virginia Dixon Miller, 79, of Hephzibah entered into rest on Tuesday, April 6, 2010, at the Medical College of Georgia.

Mrs. Miller was born and raised in Avera, where she also raised her three sons. She worked the Savannah River Site, hand-delivering over 40, 000 Guide Post magazines throughout the CSRA, and being a homemaker. She was a member of Pine Hill Baptist Church in Hephzibah and a past member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Avera.

Funeral services were held at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Avera, on Friday, April 9, 2010, at 2 p.m., with Rev. Donald Lumpkin and Dr. Robert Driggers officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J.T. “James” Miller; and her parents, Eugene and Ina Sheppard Dixon.

Survivors include three sons, Alan (Gina) Miller, Augusta, Jay Miller, Tulsa, Okla., and Ellis Miller, Augusta; brother, Rudolph Dixon, Augusta; sister, Lawana Harris, Atlanta; three grandchildren, Amy Miller, Michael Miller and Samantha Miller; and one great-granddaughter, Kaleigh Miller.

Memorials may be made to the Pleasant Grove cemetery Fund, c/o Bobbie Kitchens, P.O. Box 55, Avera, GA, 30803.

Mrs. Emily Story Pennington
Mrs. Emily Story Pennington, 95, of Matthews entered into rest on Friday, April 9, 2010, at her residence.

Mrs. Pennington was born to the late Samuel Gaines and Ida Gresham Story in Waynesboro, but lived most of her life in Matthews. She was a graduate of Limestone College, a teacher and homemaker. She was a member of Mt. Moriah.

Funeral services were held at Mt. Moriah UMC on Monday, April 12, 2010, at 11 a.m., with Rev. James Emery and Rev. Chris Henry officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Floyd Pennington Jr.; and son, Andrew Floyd Pennington III.

Survivors include her children, Sam Story (Dolly) Pennington and Deborah (Mike Helton) Pennington; a daughter-in-law, Virginia Brooks Pennington; five grandchildren, Carolyn Emily Pennington (Wesley) Sparks, Andrew McNair Pennington, Mark Garrett (Ashley) Pennington, John Edgar Pennington and Melissa Ashley Pennington; and three great-grandsons, Connor Floyd Cummins, Garrett Andrew Pennington and Brooks Jerry Pennington.

Pallbearers were Jim Milton, Sam Story, Troy Stewart, Jeb Barrow, Alan Rabun, Jeff Jones, Jerry Dowdy and Jim Gay.

James Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
