Mr. Mario “Mike” Villarreal
Mr. Mario “Mike” Villarreal, 69, of Augusta entered into rest on Monday, April 12, 2010, at the Veterans Administration Hospital.
Mr. Villarreal, son of the late Lucrecia Garza and Federico Villarreal, was born in Nueva Laredo, Mexico, and has lived in the area for 39 years. He served in the United States Army with three tours in Vietnam. He was a member of the VFW. He trained race horses, was a team roper and announced horse shows.
Memorial services were held Thursday, April 15, 2010, at 7 p.m. at the chapel of Chance and Hydrick Funeral Directors, with Father Willis E. Everett officiating.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Juanita Bertha Villarreal.
Survivors include his son, Michael Kevin Villarreal of Augusta; daughters, Lucrecia Shelton (Matthew) and Brandi Villarreal, all of Augusta, and Rebecca McPherson (James) of Soldotna, Ala.; wife, Debra Villarreal; brothers, Fred Villarreal, Ruben Villarreal and Robert Villarreal, all of San Antonio, Texas; sisters, Alicia Alfaro, Norma Guerra, Elva DeLeon, Marta Villarreal and Juanita Carter, all of San Antonio, Texas; grandchildren, Rachel Goodwin and Cory Goodwin, both of Gibson, and Heidi Goodwin, of Soldotna, Ala.; and great-grandchild, Liam.

Mr. Paul M. Watkins
Mr. Paul M. Watkins, 83, of Orlando, Fla., entered into rest on April 16, 2010.
Mr. Watkins was born Nov. 19, 1926, in Jefferson County, to Thomas Lee and Ollie Minter Watkins. Upon high school graduation from Bartow High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Retiring after 26 years of military service, he began a Civil Service career at Patrick Air Force Base and McCoy Air Force Base, serving a total of 18 years.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 20, 2010, at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Carey Hand Colonial Funeral Home, Orlando, Fla.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Ann; daughters, Beth (Brian) Yearty, Orlando, and Debra Master, Jacksonville, Fla.; and granddaughter, Carla Masters, Jacksonville.

Mrs. Lillie Mae Poole Whigham
Mrs. Lillie Mae Poole Whigham of Wadley entered into rest on Tuesday, April 13, 2010, in Louisville.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 17, 2010, at 2 p.m. at Kingdom Life Fellowship Ministries in Wadley, with Apostle Clifford Duckworth officiating. Burial was in the Live Oak cemetery in Wadley.
Survivors include two daughters, Ora L. Poole and Mae Lois Jones, both of Wadley; one son, Arthur Whigham of Wadley; 13 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, 45 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers were Charles E. Lewis, Greg Whigham, Roosevelt Whigham, Henry Whigham, Jerry Whigham and Frankie Nesby.

Mr. Hubert Eugene “Gene” Carpenter
Mr. Hubert Eugene “Gene” Carpenter of Evans entered into rest on April 22, 2010.
Mr. Carpenter was a native of Jefferson County. He retired from the U.S. Army after serving in Germany, Korea, Hawaii and Vietnam. After 20 years, he retired from the U.S. Signal Center at Fort Gordon.
Graveside services, with full military honors, were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 25, 2010, at Bellevue Memorial Gardens, with Donnie Barrett officiating.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Glenda Smith Carpenter; daughter, Cynthia Carpenter Foss (Mike) of Evans; son, Craig Eugene Carpenter (Kathy) of Marietta; two grandsons, Justin W. Foss and Dalton M. Foss of Evans; two step-grandchildren, Neal Hunter of Athens, and Katelyn Hunter of Marietta; a sister, Katie Clements (Gene) of Thomson; four brothers, David Carpenter of Wrens, Russell Goodwin (Frances) of Loganville, Herbert Goodwin (Donna) of Bethlehem, and Al Goodwin (Ann) of Hazda, Ky.; two brothers-in-law, Charles M. Mrs. Melba Olivia Smith Cannon, 89, of Augusta entered into rest on Sunday, April 11, 2010, at the The Place at Martinez.
Mrs. Cannon was born in Keysville, to the late Lon and Annie Mae Arrington Smith. She was a member of Pine Hill Baptist Church, Faith Sunday School Class and the Wild Women of Pine Hill Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 14, 2010, at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Chance and Hydrick Funeral Directors, with Rev. Robert Driggers officiating. Interment followed in the Keysville United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Survivors include her daughter, Beth Smith (Jimmy) of Hephzibah; son, Randy Cannon (Tamara) of North Augusta, S.C.; brother, Truman Smith (Linda) of Wrens; grandson, Clint Smith (Dana) of Hephzibah, two great-grandsons, Brett and Chase Smith; nephew, Paul Smith; niece, Vicki Neveu (Raymond); and adopted daughter, Binnie Jones.

Mr. Lindy M. Chalker Sr. of Evans entered into rest on Wednesday, April 21, 2010, at his residence.
Mr. Chalker was a native of Glascock County, but had resided in Evans most of his life. He was an electrical superintendent for Carter Electric. Mr. Chalker was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Gibson.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 24, 2010, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet and Son Funeral Directors, with Rev. Russell Davis and Key Kernaghan officiating. Interment was in Bellevue Memorial Gardens.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Hammond Chalker and Bradlee Chalker; sister, Vera Davis; son, Lindy “Bo” Chalker Jr.; and stepson, Randy Lee Teuton.
Survivors include his wife, Florence E. Chalker; daughter, Kathy Chalker of Gibson; stepsons, Dr. Michael Teuton of Jackson, S.C., and Kenneth W. Teuton of Jackson, S.C.; stepdaughter, Cheryl Meadows of Augusta; sisters, Cloise Kent of Gibson, and Opal Hammett of Gibson; a number of nieces and nephews; and daughter-in-law, Shirley Chalker.

Mrs. Louella Boatright Coleman
Mrs. Louella Boatright Coleman, 89, of Wadley entered into rest on Wednesday, April 21, 2010, at the Glendale Nursing Home, Wadley.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 1, 2010, at 12:30 p.m. at Kingdom Life Fellowship Ministries, Wadley.
Mrs. Coleman was a native of Washington County, the daughter of the late Charlie L. Boatright and Lillie Mae Washington Boatright. She was the widow of the late Doyle Coleman Jr. In 1955 Mrs. Coleman migrated north and settled in Brooklyn, N.Y. After her retirement from Imperial Paper Box Corporation, she and her husband returned home to Wadley, and established Coleman Country Kitchens. While in New York, she joined the Greater Emmanuel Pentecostal Church of Brooklyn, N.Y. Upon her return she united with the Kingdom Life Fellowship Ministries.
Survivors include her sons, C. Kamali (Ann) Coleman of Wadley, and Hampton, Doyle Coleman III of Wadley; five children that she reared as her own, Antwon King, Raymond King, Saymon King, Annette King and Michael King; seven great-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; stepsister, Lillie Mae Boyd of Augusta; sister-in-law, Marie Boatright of Savannah; cousins, Vera and Izell Mack, Rev. Leonard and Eloise Vining, Mattie Boatright and Lennie Johnson; and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mrs. Elaine Swint Gilmer
Mrs. Elaine Swint Gilmer, 67, of Gibson entered into rest on April 18, 2010, at University Hospital.
Mrs. Gilmer was a lifelong resident of Glascock County. She was retired as a secretary from M.B. Jones Oil Company and Town and Country Gas, with over 20 years of service. Mrs. Gilmer also worked at Thomson Company for many years. She served as a mentor for Glascock Action Partners, Inc., worked as part-time librarian at the Glascock County Public Library and was a member of the Rolling Hills Garden Club. Mrs. Gilmer was also a member of Magnolia Baptist Church, where she was active in WMU and served as past Sunday School Director.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 21, 2010, at Magnolia Baptist Church, with Rev. Tommy Harwell and Rev. Randall Whitaker officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Gilmer was preceded in death by her father, Roy Swint; and brother, Ernest Swint.
Survivors include her mother, Corene Chalker Todd; husband of 45 years, Allen Robert Gilmer; son, Michael Gilmer (Stephanie); sister, Vivian S. Smith; grandchildren, Breanna Gilmer and Boone Gilmer, all of Gibson.

Mr. John Wayne Howell
Mr. John Wayne Howell, 72, of Augusta entered into rest on Friday, April 23, 2010, at University Hospital.
Mr. Howell was a native of Gibson, and graduate of Wrens High School, but made the Augusta area his home for the past 47 years. He was a member of Trinity on the Hill United Methodist Church and the Couples and Singles Sunday School Class. Mr. Howell was a member of the Elks Lodge #205 and former President of Aiken Assembly
Funeral services were held on Monday, April 26, 2010, at noon at Thomas Poteet and Son, with Rev. Greg Hatfield officiating. Internment followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
He was preceded in death by his father, George William Howell Sr.; mother, Ozell Howell Russell; stepfather, Milledge Russell; and brother, George William Howell Jr.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Dorothy Templeton Howell; daughters, Donna Howell Conrad (Glen) and Laurie Howell Wanninger; grandchildren, Wyatt Ernest Wanninger Jr. and Ashlyn Marie Wanninger; brother, Walter Jerry Howell of Wrightsville; sister, Georgeanna Howell Clements of Wrightsville; sister-in-law, Ruth Howell of Hiram; and numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

Mr. Benjamin “Red” L. Newman
Mr. Benjamin “Red” L. Newman, 86, of Wadley entered into rest on Thursday, April 22, 2010, at his residence.
Mr. Newman was born in Richmond County, but had lived in Wadley since 1973. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in WWII. He was a retired police chief in Wadley for 30 years and a member of the Wadley Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, April 25, 2010, at 2 p.m. at Wadley Baptist Church, with Rev. Tom Harrison and Rev. Rusty Manning officiating. Interment followed in the Wadley Cemetery.
Survivors include a son, Frankie Lee Newman (Ronda) of Stillmore; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; nieces and nephews, Algie Snider, Ann McGraw and Jimmy Snider; and friend and neighbor, Margaret Goodson.
Pallbearers were the Wadley Police Department.

Mrs. Ida Mae Phillips-Smith
Mrs. Ida Mae Phillips-Smith, 66, of Keysville entered into rest on Monday, April 19, 2010, at her residence.
Mrs. Phillips-Smith was born to the late Voncile and John Prickett, and lived most of her life in Jefferson County. She lived a brief time in Greenwood, S.C., where she delivered residents The Index Journal. She also worked in several manufacturing companies and was a homemaker. In addition to her own three children, she was a foster parent to eight others.
Funeral services were held at James Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday, April 22, 2010, at 1:30 p.m., with Rev. Debra Perkins and Rev. Joe Walden officiating. Interment followed at Mt. Moriah UMC Cemetery.
Survivors include her companion of 27 years, C. Diane “Bo” Smith; three children, John Coleman Jr., Frankie Phillips and Gail Phillips; eight adopted children, Selena Garcia, Anna Garcia, Artemio “Bud” Garcia, Leticia “Ellie” Garcia, John Auzenne, Richard McCune, Angela Lawrence and Ashley Lawrence; eight siblings, Raymond “Buddy” Prickett, Freddie “Teet” Prickett, Allen “Dinky” Prickett, Lula McNeil, Marsha Gay, Susie Prickett, Joyce Hillis and Bonnie Miles; eight grandchildren, Kenny, Robert, April, Bandon, Shawn, Justin, Amber and Haley; two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Terrence; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
