Mrs. Betty Joe Fountain Murray
Mrs. Betty Joe Fountain Murray, 76, of Johnston, S.C., entered into rest on Friday, March 25, 2011, at her residence.
Mrs. Murray was born in Mitchell, and was of Baptist faith. She was a homemaker.
Graveside services were held on Monday, March 28, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Aiken Memorial Gardens.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie E. Murray.
Survivors include one son, Jerry (Alicia) Murray, Johnston, S.C.; and two grandchildren, Tyler and Cheyanne Murray.

Mrs. Luella Roberson, 86, of Augusta entered into rest on Wednesday, March 23, 2011.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 26, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Flat Rock Baptist Church, Matthews, with Rev. Stephen B. Ivey officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include two granddaughters, Julie (Olin) Dorsey and Crystal (Kherik) Gordon of Augusta; sister, Dorothy (Joe) Burnett of Wrens; uncle, James (Margaret) Brinson of Augusta; and five great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Joyce Ann Stidons Scott
Mrs. Joyce Ann Stidons Scott, 60, formerly of Wrens entered into rest on Saturday, March 19, 2011.
Mrs. Scott was born in Matthews, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Eugene and Adline Kelley Stidons. She was a member of Ways Grove Baptist Church, Wrens. She received some of her education in Matthews School System. She was united in marriage to the late David Lee Scott Jr. on April 27, 1973. She was employed with Stapleton Garment Company for more than 20 years. After the plant closed, she found employment in home health care until her health began to decline.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 26, 2011, at 4 p.m. at Flat Rock Missionary Baptist Church and Cemetery, Matthews, with Rev. Jimmy McCullough officiating.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and five siblings, Helen Boyd, Richard, Clarence, Eugene and Willie Lee Stidons.
Survivors include her daughter, Thalisia (Tereall Williams) Kelley of Louisville; five grandchildren who were reared as her own, Ajee Sharmaine Scott, Juriesha Scott, Alonzo Richardson, Gary Kelley and Zaylon Scott of Louisville; four sisters, Betty Jean Boyd of Wrens, Mary (Johnny) Thomas of Stapleton, Renell Stidons of Keysville, and Mary Bell Cooper of Louisville; two brothers, Charlie Willie Stidons of Wrens and Sam Kelley of Matthews; sister-in-laws, Eunice Leverett of Augusta, Barbara (Bobby) Tabb of Augusta, Daisy Scott of Keysville, Lula Bell Stidons of Gough, Essie Mae Stidons and Tessie Mae Stidons of Wrens; brothers-in-law, Leotis (Louise) Scott of Matthews, Leevern (Joann) Scott of Matthews, John Berry of Wrens and Joe Boyd of Matthews; two nieces who were also caregivers, Juanita Stidons and Jacklon Berry; and several other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Mr. Carl Vickers Sumner
Mr. Carl Vickers Sumner, 93, of Wrightsville entered into rest on Wednesday, March 23, 2011.
Born on Jan. 5, 1918, on his family’s farm in Washington County, he was youngest of 11 children of Robert H. and Effie Smith Sumner. Mr. Sumner graduated from Wrightsville High School and thereafter attended Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, where he earned a degree in agriculture. After graduation in 1942, he returned home and married
Doris Jackson Sumner. They were married
until her death in 1993. Mr. Sumner’s first employment after college was with the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service in its Statesboro office. After the United States entered World War II, Mr. Sumner enlisted in the U.S. Army on Nov. 24, 1942. Following basic training, he was deployed to the European Theater. During the war, Mr. Sumner served as a Warrant Officer and was tasked with delivery of rations and supplies to the advancing U.S. front lines. In this capacity, he served the U.S. Seventh Army under command of General Alexander Patch who led an offensive up the Rhine Valley, merged with portions of General George
S. Patton’s U.S. Third Army and eventually crossed the Rhine River into southern Germany. Upon returning from war, Mr. Sumner, along with Herbert Jackson, founded Wrightsville Lumber Company, Inc., which specialized in the milling of southern pine lumber. The company supplied lumber and boards to Georgia and other surrounding southeastern states. Notably, lumber produced by Wrightsville Lumber Company was used in the construction of some of the original attractions at Disney World in Orlando, Fla. Mr. Sumner was a member of Wrightsville First Christain Church where he served as a deacon.
Funeral services were held on Friday, March 25, 2011, at 2 p.m. at Wrightsville First Christian Church, Rev. Derek Watt officiating.
Survivors include one child, Joe Sumner (Jean) of Wrightsville; is survived by two grandchildren, Joseph C. Sumner Jr. (Ellen), and Jeannie Sumner McClain (Alan) of Houston, Texas; three great-grandchildren, Bethany Grace Sumner, Madeleine Rea McClain and Sumner Alan McClain.

Mr. Michael James Cox, 57, of Sandersville entered into rest on Tuesday, March 29, 2011.
Mr. Cox was born in Jefferson County, the son of the late Joe Franklin Cox Sr. and the late Rhuea Hardy Cox. He was an employee of Washington EMC, where he provided facilities maintenance. Mr. Cox was a Christian.
Funeral services were held on Friday, April 1, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Sisters Baptist Church, with Rev. Danny Yates and Rev. Robert Dean officiating. Burial was in Washington County Memorial Garden.
Survivors include his wife, Dianne Brooks Cox of Sandersville; sisters, Carol Cox Henderson (Bob), Bonnie Cox Smith (Ernest), Jane Cox Jones (Stan), all of Louisville, Pam Cox Pope (Dwight) of Augusta, and Ginger Cox Pratt (Win) of Louisville; brother, Joe Franklin Cox Jr. (Patsy) of Louisville; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and –nephews; and friends, Stacy B. Taylor and Sandy D. Smith both of Sandersville, and Sarah M. Handwerker of McIntyre.

Mrs. Thelma Ree Sellars Cox, 80, of Thomson entered into rest on Friday, April 1, 2011.
A native of Washington County, Mrs. Cox was a daughter of the late William Kincher “Bill” Sellars and Annie Dell West Sellars. She was a homemaker and member of The Shepherd’s Church in Appling.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 4, 2011, at Louisville Church of God, with Rev. David Severance officiating. Burial followed in Louisville City Cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William L. Cox Sr.; and a son, Gary M. Cox.
Survivors include three sons, William L. (Betty) Cox Jr. of Augusta, John M. (Mott) Cox of Louisville, and Larry R. (Onnie) Cox of Waynesboro; sisters, Joann Smith of Fayetteville, and Jeanien Harris of Louisville; brothers, Richard Sellars and William “Billy” Sellars, both of Sandersville; grandchildren, Mary Blalock, Anna Baggs, Elizabeth Cox, Lawton Hickman, Rodney McGraw and Dawn Price; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Dr. James Royce Godfrey Sr.
Dr. James Royce Godfrey Sr., 76, of Wrens entered into rest on Monday, March 28, 2011, at Washington County Extended Care Facility, Sandersville.
Dr. Godfrey was born to the late Murial E. Killebrew Godfrey and the late Ralph Lonzo Godfrey in Eastman. He played basketball in high school. While serving his country in the Air Force in Oklahoma during the Korean War, he met his wife, Norma, whom he married
after his tour of duty. He received his Doctorate of Ministry and served in Kentucky and Georgia with his longest service, for more than 16 years, being at Fort Creek Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 31, 2011, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Sandersville, with Rev. Lee Lacey and Dr. Bill Harrell officiating. Interment followed in Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Sandersville.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Norma N. Godfrey; children, Debra G. Duggan (Billy), Joyce G. Hartley (Bill), James R. Godfrey Jr. (Sheila), and Allison G. Williams; nine grandchildren, Christal Duggan, Jon Duggan, Neal Hartley, Josh Hartley, Matt Hartley, Audra Hartley, Alex Godfrey, Kellie Brooke Huffman and Jamie Godfrey; three great-grandchildren, Will Hartley, Anna Kate Hartley and Connor Mimbs; and many cousins and friends.

Mrs. Doris Cooper Morgan, 87, of Louisville, entered into rest on April 3, 2011.
Mrs. Morgan was a native of Bartow, having made Louisville her home. She was a member of Old Bethel Baptist Church and the Women’s Missionary Union. Mrs. Morgan was a retired secretary with Hardeman Feed and Seed Company.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 6, 2011, at noon at Old Bethel Baptist Church, with Rev. Randy Mimbs officiating. Interment was in Parkers Cemetery.
Survivors include her daughter, Sheila (John) Wood, Huntersville, N.C.; four grandchildren, Michael Poloney, Stephanie Poloney, Michelle Poloney and Caitlin Wood; and three great-grandchildren.
