Mr. Alvin Leroy Knoll Sr.
Mr. Alvin Leroy Knoll Sr., 88, of Louisville entered into rest on Monday, Jan. 3, 2011, at Jefferson Hospital, after many years of declining health.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011, at 6 p.m. at James Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Stan Littleton officiating. Family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011, at James Funeral Home.
Funeral services will also be held on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, at 2 p.m. at Summersett Funeral Home Chapel, Salisbury, N.C. Interment will follow in Rowan Memorial Park. Family will receive friends on Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Summersett Funeral Home.
Mr. Knoll was born to the late Claire Josephine Hohn Knoll and the late Charles Augustus Knoll in Branchton, Pa. He was a WWII veteran and met his wife of 67 years, Evelyn Virginia Cottingham Knoll, while serving with the U.S. Army in North Carolina. He made North Carolina his home until the 1970s. He was a machinist by trade and worked for Florida Pneumatics for many years and was also president of his own company, Knoll Production Machining of Lake Park, Fla. After retiring in the early 1990s and having failing health in the following years, he made his home with his son and daughter-in-law, eventually relocating to Wrens.
He was preceded in death by his infant son, Lonnie Charles Knoll; and three sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Virginia Cottingham Knoll; children, Alvin L. “Butch” Knoll Jr. (Brenda) of Wrens, and Carol V. Short (Kermit) of Graham, N.C.; three granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Janet Hovis of Meadeville, Pa.; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Mrs. Anne Barwick Comfort Phillips
Mrs. Anne Barwick Comfort Phillips, 90, of Johnson City, Tenn., entered into rest on Monday, Dec. 27, 2010.
Mrs. Phillips was born on June 16, 1920, in Louisville, the daughter of Julia and Milton Barwick. She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church of Johnson City and the Church of the Savior, Newland, N.C. She taught English and speech at ETSU and later became a representative with Ameriprise Financial Services.
Funeral services were held at St. John’s Episcopal Church on Friday, Dec. 31, 2010, at 2 p.m., with Rev. Dr. Hal Hutchinson officiating.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard; son, William R. Comfort Jr.; and siblings, M. Cook Barwick, Elizabeth Lindsey and Dr. John Barwick.
Survivors include her son, Rev. Alex Comfort (Kippy) of Mars Hill, N.C.; one sister-in-law, Shirley Barwick of Jonesborough, Tenn.; one granddaughter, Julie Raynor (Scott) of High Point, N.C.; one grandson, Rick Comfort (Denise) of Jackson, Tenn.; seven nephews, three nieces, seven great-grandchildren; and many great-nieces and -nephews.

Mr. Rhonie Paul Rogers, 74, of Tennille entered into rest on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011, at his residence following a brief illness. ?
Mr. Rogers was a native of Johnson County, the son of the late James Rogers and the late Cora Mae Arrington Rogers.?He was a graduate of Wadley High School and served in the United States Air Force. He was a retired electrician with Thiele Kaolin Company.?Mr. Rogers was a member of the Tennille United Methodist Church and served in numerous capacities for the church.?He was on the Board of Directors of the Jefferson County Historical Society.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011, at the May and Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Sandersville, with?Rev. Jeff Cook, Rev. Don Youmans and Rev. Dr. Dwight Irons officiating. Burial was in the Zeta cemetery in Tennille.
Survivors include his wife, Leona Weaving Rogers of Tennille; a daughter, Jeanette Rogers Ward of Scott; three sons, Rhonie Rogers of Sandersville, Edward James Rogers of Harrison and Jeffrey Rogers of Tennille; four grandchildren, Samuel Luther Rogers, Amy Jessica Rogers, Mary Beth Rogers and Catherine Warren Rogers; and a sister, Betty Jean Rogers of Tennille.

Mrs. Lela W. Stone
Mrs. Lela W. Stone of Evans entered into rest on Friday, Dec. 24, 2010, at Kennestone Hospital, Marietta.
Mrs. Stone, a native of Jefferson County, and long-time resident of Burke County, was a retired educator and social worker with the Burke County Board of Education. She was active in social and civic organizations including, The Top Ladies of Distinction, The Augusta Alumnae Chapter Of Delta Sigma Theta Sority, Inc., and a former founder and chairperson of the Boggs Community Development Cooperation, Inc. (BCDC). Mrs. Stone was also a former board member of the Burke County Board of Education, and a Charter and Board Member of the Lucy Craft Laney Museum. She was an elder, first at Westminister Presbyterian Church in Waynesboro, and later at Belle-Terrace Presbyterian Church in Augusta until her death.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010, at Gilbert-Lambuth Chapel of Paine College, with Rev. Melvin Lowry officiating. Entombment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Survivors include her husband, G. Samuel Stone; daughter, Lynette (Phillip) Johnson of Atlanta; son, Richard (Edie) Stone of North Augusta, S.C.; four grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Mary Wright of Raleigh, N.C., and Jean Wright of St. Albans, N.Y.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was a native of Wadley, and a member of Bethel AME Church.

Mr. Hansen Jerald Josey Sr., 70, of Wrens entered into rest on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011, at University Hospital Heart and Vascular Center.
Born to the late Eddie Mae Smith Josey and the late Noah Ralph Josey, Mr. Josey grew up in Sandersville and worked in the maintenance department at Thermal Ceramics for many years. He was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church.
Graveside services were at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011, in the New Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery, with Rev. Inman Gerrald officiating.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean Josey; two brothers, Robert A. Josey and Charlie R. Josey.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Brannan Rogers; children, Lawanda Smith (Donald) of Bartow, Renee Smith (Larry) of Sandersville, Angela Burkett (Douglas) of Warrenville, S.C., and H. Jerald Josey Jr. (Angela) of Edgefield, S.C.; two stepsons, Keith Rogers and Jeff Rogers (Shelby); brother, Howard Josey (Omie Lee) of Riddleville; two sisters, Peggy Thigpen (Charles) of Milledgeville, and Julia Mae Josey of Riddleville; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Mrs. Elizabeth Lorene Redfern Lewis
Mrs. Elizabeth Lorene Redfern Lewis, 67, of Sparta entered into rest on Monday, Jan. 3, 2011, at her residence.
Mrs. Lewis was born in Washington County the daughter of the late Ivey Leroy Redfern and the late Sarah Ellen Osborne Redfern. She was the former assistant administrator of the Hancock Memorial Hospital and was a lifetime beautician. Mrs. Lewis was a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church in Warthen.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the Bethlehem Baptist Church, with Rev. Tim Powell and Rev. Stacey Williford officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mr. Andrew James McNeely
Mr. Andrew James McNeely, 86, of Louisville entered into rest on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011, in the Heritage Inn of Sandersville following an extended illness.
Mr. McNeely was a native of Jefferson County, the son of the late Lewis Neal McNeely and Frances Blanchard McNeely. He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. McNeely was a member of the First Baptist Church of Louisville, a church deacon, and a member of the T.W. Wilson Sunday School Class. He was a retired supervisor of The Thermo King Corporation.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Louisville, with Rev. Larry Montgomery and Rev. Hardy Owen officiating. Burial was in the Jefferson Memorial Gardens.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Ann Wilcher McNeely; sister, Elizabeth McNeely Kitchens; and brothers, Lynwood McNeely and John L. McNeely.
Survivors include his daughter, Karen McNeely Dana (John) of Sandersville; son, Dr. James Michael McNeely (Laura) of Savannah; grandsons, Ronald W. Livingston and Jonathan Neal Livingston, both of Louisville; sisters, Martha McNeely Garrett of Davisboro and Lula McNeely Sapp of Statesboro.

Mr. John Edward Norris
Mr. John Edward Norris, 80, of Wrens entered into rest on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, at his residence after a prolonged illness.
Mr. Norris was a lifelong resident of Wrens and attended Jefferson County schools. He grew up during the Great Depression which greatly influenced his life. Alongside his brother Pete, he served his country in the Army 40th Quartermaster Co. during the Korean War and was awarded the Korean Service Medal, with three Bronze Service Stars and the United Nations Service Medal. After the war, he continued to serve in the Army Ready Reserves until 1959. He was a farmer and retired from City of Wrens Water Department. He was also a member of Peggy’s “Breakfast Club.”
Graveside services were held on Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2011, in the Wrens Memorial cemetery at 3 p.m., with Dr. Stan Littleton officiating.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mille Ellie Norris and James Alfred Norris; and brother, Charlie J. “Pete” Norris.
Survivors include two daughters, Debra N. Myers and Dianne N. Ashe (Kirby); two sisters, Lena N. Braswell and Sarah N. Wooten; four grandchildren, Tiffany Norris, Erin Ashe, Alison Ashe and Will Ashe; three great-grandsons, Johnathan, Phillip and Michael; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.
Pallbearers were Kirby Ashe, Will Ashe, Johnny Atkinson, Harry Evans, Clayton Johnson and Mack Peeler.
