Mrs. Laura Mae Hadden Stepp
Mrs. Laura Mae Hadden Stepp, 65, of Sparta entered into rest on Sunday, March 13, 2011.

Mrs. Stepp was a native and lifelong resident of Hancock County. She was the daughter of the late Robert Louis Hadden Sr. and Julia Cheely Hadden. Mrs. Stepp was a retired truck driver with Trucks, Inc. and was a member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 17, 2011, at 3 p.m. at Mineral Springs Baptist Church, with Rev. Bill Seaman and Rev. Burt Mauldin officiating. Interment followed in Mineral Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, R.L. Hadden Jr. and J.H. Hadden Sr.

Survivors include her son, Chad (Libby) Stepp of Appling; sister, Susie H. (David M.) McLean of Griffin; brother, Tom (Julia Ann) Hadden of Sparta; sister-in-law, Margaret Hadden of Mitchell; and grandchildren, Justin Hadden Stepp, Rayle Stepp and Matthew Stepp.

For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to Mineral Springs Baptist Church cemetery Fund.

Miss Jean A. Storey
Miss Jean A. Storey, 69, of Hephzibah entered into rest on Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at MCG.

Miss Storey was a native of Glascock County before moving to Augusta at a young age, then to Hephzibah in 1989. She was the former owner of Salon of Beauty.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 18, 2011, at Elliott Sons Funeral Home Lumpkin Road Chapel, with Pastor Marion Jay officiating. Interment was in Mitchell Baptist Church Cemetery, Mitchell.

She was preceded by her parents, Stanley and Reba Storey; and a brother, J.W. Storey.

Survivors include her brothers, Larry L. (Joyce) Storey Sr. of Augusta, and Rickey W. (Carol) Storey Sr. of Evans; sisters, Sylvia B. Prendergast of Martinez, and Angela M. (Arthur) Ash of Hephzibah; her companion, James C. McFall of Hephzibah; and 12 nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Larry Storey Jr., Rickey Storey Jr., Ryan Storey, Stevie Prendergast, Jason Zahner and Stanley Storey.

Elliott Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. John Garner Brooks
Mr. John Garner Brooks, 93, of Thomson entered into rest on Thursday, March 10, 2011, at Brandon Wilde, Augusta.

Mr. Brooks was born in Stapleton in 1917, but spent most of his adult life in McDuffie County. Mr. Brooks was general manager of Culpepper Lumber Company in Thomson, for 30 years until his retirement in 1989. He was a former member of the Kiwanis Club of Thomson, and a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International. He served on the Thomson-McDuffie Hospital Board. He was a member of Dearing Baptist Church and had served many years as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher. He served as pastor of Friendship Baptist Church in Gibson for several years.

Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 12, 2011, at Dearing Baptist Church, with Pastor Dr. Michael Timmerman and Brandon Wilde Chaplain Mike Riddle officiating. A private family interment was held prior to the funeral service.

Mr. Brooks was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Gay Brooks, parents, Lemuel Reese Brooks and Annie Thigpen Brooks; and five brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Anne (Dan) Hahn of Dearing, and Yvonne (John) Evans of Montgomery, Ala.; one son, John Brooks Jr. of Burlington, N.C.; daughter-in-law, Sonja Brooks, Atlantic Beach, N.C.; sister, Joyce Hughes; sister-in-law, Mary Brooks, both of Thomson; five grandchildren, Sarah Hahn, Daniel Hahn, Miriam Hahn, Irene Jasper and Cynthia Dix; three great-grandchildren, Jordan Dix, Savannah Dix and Alex Jasper; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Pallbearers were Harold Eubank, Jackie Brooks, Lem Brooks, Jimmy Brooks, Tommy Brooks and John Evans.

Honorary pallbearers were Deacons and members of the Men’s Sunday School Class at Dearing Baptist Church.

Miss Takisha Caldwell
Miss Takisha Caldwell, 25, of Louisville, formerly of Aiken, S.C., entered into rest on Saturday, March 5, 2011, at a Louisville nursing center.

Miss Caldwell was educated in the Aiken County Public Schools. She lived at Unihealth Post-Acute Care, Old Capital for the past three years.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 12, 2011, at Magnolia Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Survivors include her adopted parents, William Henry and Minnie B. Caldwell; four sisters, Barbara Ann Caldwell, Cathy (Gary) Brunson, both of Aiken, S.C., Lashanda P. Caldwell, Greenwood, S.C., and Crystal T. Caldwell, Newberry, S.C.; four brothers, Elbert (Johnnie Mae) Walker, Jeffery (Annette) Caldwell, Aiken, S.C., and David Small, North Carolina; and a host of other relatives.

Jackson-Brooks Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Miss N. Jean Evans
Miss N. Jean Evans entered into rest on March 7, 2011, after a brief illness.

Miss Evans was born in Avera on Aug. 25, 1946, to Isam Evans Sr. and the late Mildred Brady. She was raised by her grandparents, the late Mitchell and Nellie Curtis Evans. She was educated in the Jefferson County Public School System, graduating valedictorian of her class. She furthered her education by attending Clark University College, graduating with an associates in arts, and she also attended Massy Junior College Institute of Interior Design in 1973. She served in the United States Air Force, was a Vietnam veteran and was honorably discharged. She was a member of Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church for more than 30 years. She was founding president of the Hospitality Guild Ministry. She also served as president of Pastor’s Aid, and a member of the Deacon Clarence Lovelace Ushers Ministry. Miss Evans retired from the federal government after 30 years of employment. She also owned a woman’s shopping service for church ladies and facilitated various workshops on grooming and church fashion. She sold hats for more than 30 years and was featured in a news story by WNYT on her collection. Miss Evans was a member of the Syracuse Chapter of the National Council of Negro Women.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 14, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Magnolia Baptist Church, Avera, with Pastor Rev. Perry Daniel and Rev. Willie B. Tomlin officiating.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Charles Evans and Winfred Evans.

Survivors include her son, C. Omarr Evans (Philesha); father, Isam Evans Sr.; stepmother, Othella Evans, both of Avera; brothers, Isam Evans (Eva Jean) of Louisville, and Franklin Evans of Richmond, Va.; sister, A’Leshia Evans of Atlanta; granddaughter, Cadence Olivia Evans; goddaughter, Coretta Good; sisters-in-law, Diane Evans of Avera, and Veronica Evans of Louisville; members at Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church in Albany, N.Y.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Pallbearers were Lindsey Roberts, L.W. Sherrod, Lewis Carr, Michael Curry, Judie McCall and Alton Spells Jr.

Honorary pallbearers were Deacons and Trustees of Magnolia Baptist Church and her graduating class of 1964.

Mr. Fred H. Farrer
Fred H. Farrer, 75, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., entered into rest on Friday, March 11, 2011.

Mr. Farrer was a native of Louisville, and son of the late Lewis H. Farrer and Dessie Pearl Glassey. Mr. Farrer was co-owner of Farrer Brothers and a member of the Church of Christ. He graduated in 1954 from Louisville Academy.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 14, 2011, at Woodfin Memorial Chapel, with Brother Tony Holt and Brother Charles Mullins officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Eleanor Hayes Farrer; two sons, Ralph (Tammy) Farrer of Milton, and Stephen Farrer of Murfreesboro; brother Charles (Pat) Farrer of Murfreesboro; and four grandchildren Sharon, Helen, Forrest and Andrew Farrer.

Pallbearers were Kelly Johnson, Ralph Puckett, Jamie Hire, Ike Farrer, Mike Barrett, Calvin Raley, Jesse Bailey, Jake Jacobs, H. Allen Jones, Forrest Farrer, Andrew Farrer and Chuck Farrer, Mark Gorbett and Bud Fultz.

Mrs. Isabelle McGruder Harmon
Mrs. Isabelle McGruder Harmon entered into rest on Feb. 23, 2011.

Mrs. Harmon was born on Nov. 14, 1912, to the late Henry and Minnie Rainwater McGruder. She was a member of Eden Baptist Church, and a member of the daughters of Wadley Chapter No. 487 Order of Eastern Star.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Feb. 27, 2011, at 2 p.m. at Eden Baptist Church, Louisville, with Pastor Rev. J.O. Nelson officiating.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert Harmon Sr.; children, Robert Harmon Jr., Tamer Harmon Yancey and Carrie Harmon Brown; and siblings, Bill McGruder, Lindsey McGruder, Hosea McGruder, Eumon McGruder and Willie Alice McKinney.

Survivors include her children, Mamie Harmon, Eli Harmon (Lessie), Mary Harmon, Isaiah Harmon (Ann Nell), all of Louisville, Willie Albert Harmon (Frances) and Berry Harmon (Jeanette), all of Augusta; sister-in-law, Annie L. McGruder of Wadley; sons-in-law, Home Brown and William Yancey of Wrens; goddaughter, Rosetta Strowbridge of Wadley; 25 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Pallbearers were her grandsons.

Honorary pallbearers were Deacons and Trustees of Eden Baptist Church.

Mrs. Annie Lillian Brown Hilton
Mrs. Annie Lillian Brown Hilton entered into rest on Wednesday, March 9, 2011, at Jefferson Hospital.

Mrs. Hilton was born in Washington County, but lived in Jefferson County most of her life. She attended Jefferson County Public Schools. At an early age she joined Hardeman Springfield Baptist Church. Mrs. Hilton visited the Jefferson County Senior Citizen Center and was a member of Louisville AA for more than 13 years.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 16, 2011, at 2 p.m. at Hardeman Springfield Baptist Church and Cemetery, with Pastor Rev. C. Dunlap officiating.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Corine Robinson Brown; her husband, Sam Hilton; four children, Charles Coppett, Dennis Reese, James Reese and Ricky “BoHog” Hilton; and four siblings, Willie James Brown, Clinton Reese, Bobby Reese and Hattie Mae Reese.

Survivors include her children, Corinne (James) Bostic, Willie James (Yolanda) Reese, John (Tess) Reese of St Petersburg, Fla., Smithie Jenkins, Myretter “Bee” (Napolian) Tomlin, Mary Jane Hilton and Janice (Charles) Washington of Louisville, and Sam Reese of Statesboro; siblings, John Willie Reese and Annie Lois Walden of Louisville, Leroy Reese and Nettie Mae Reese of Macon, Harvey Reese of Atlanta, Betty Louise Fields of Augusta; one aunt, Mila Robinson of Louisville; sisters-in-law, Geneva Reese, Mozell McCall, Annie Lue “Hun” Hilton of Louisville, Verdell Brown of Atlanta; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Willie Mae Lampkin
Mrs. Willie Mae Lampkin of Augusta entered into rest on Thursday, March 10, 2011, at University Hospital.

Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.

Survivors include her daughter, Geneva Jones, Grovetown; nieces, Susan Brown, Dearing, and Mary Louise Smith, Wrens; two granddaughters, Tonia Jones Jackson, Columbia, S.C., and Latoyia Jones, Harlem; a host of other nieces and nephews; and godson, Ervin B. Prather, Augusta.

Mrs. Ruby May Mills
Mrs. Ruby May Mills, 79, of Gibson entered into rest on Thursday, March 10, 2011, at her residence.

Mrs. Mills was a native of Glascock County, and lived here all of her Life.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 14, 2011, at the Gibson City Cemetery, with Rev. Jacky Downs officiating.

Survivors include three daughters, Cathy (Robert) Keller of Louisville, Ky., Belinda Gaiona of Hobart, Ind., and Cynthia Simpson of Lexington, Ky.; one brother, William “Bill” May of Warner Robbins; and two grandchildren, Johnathon and Dawn Keller.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Julia Carrey; parents, Fred and Viola Scarboro May; one sister, Frances Gable; four brothers, Cecil May, John May, Roland May and D.J. May.

Mrs. Jeanne Johnson Pruitt
Mrs. Jeanne Johnson Pruitt, 92, of Augusta entered into rest on Wednesday, March 9, 2011, at her residence with her son by her side.

Mrs. Pruitt was a native of Atlanta, but had been a resident of Augusta for 52 years. She received her bachelor’s degree in business administration from Georgia State University in Atlanta, and was a First Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. Mrs. Pruitt was a member of Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church and was a former member of the Augusta Country Club, the Pinnacle Club and the Augusta Sailing Club.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 14, 2011, at Westover Memorial Park, with Dr. R. Leslie Holmes officiating.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Edward Rex Pace Pruitt; parents, Eugene Thomas Johnson Sr. and Annie Pearce Barnes Johnson; brother, Eugene Thomas Johnson Jr.; and sister, Louise Johnson Evans.

Survivors include her son, Pace B. Pruitt (Kay) of Gibson; and her sister, Anne Johnson Cooglar of Atlanta.

Platt’s Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
