Mr. Julius Larry Raines Sr.
Mr. Julius Larry Raines Sr., 87, of Wadley entered into rest on Monday, March 14, 2011, at the V.A. Medical Center, Augusta.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 17, 2011, at Louisville First Baptist Church, with Rev. Larry Montgomery, Rev. Hardy Owens and Rev. Ron Henson officiating. Burial will follow in the family lot in the Louisville City Cemetery.
Mr. Raines, a native of Jefferson County, was a son of the late John M. and Florence Raines. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving during World War II. He was a Master Mason of Stonewall Lodge No. 98 F&AM; in Louisville for over 60 years. Mr. Raines was a member of Louisville First Baptist Church, a builder, farmer, and owner of Raines Supply in Louisville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Helen Raines; brothers, John M. Raines Jr., William Raines and Tilla Raines; and a sister, Kathryn R. Cooper.
Survivors include his wife, Carol S. Raines; sons, Larry “Bunny” Raines of Wadley, and Chris Raines (Julie) of Juliette; grandchildren, Chip, Joey, Nick, Kelly and Phillip Raines; great-grandchildren, Hinsley and Zach Raines; sister, Jane R. Wimberly of Wadley; stepchildren, Ben and Martha English, Kelli and Lee Avant, Ellen and Randy Hall, Emily and Jim Snell; nine step-grandchildren, and two step-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be nephews, Charles Pollett, Chuck Wimberly, Gus Cooper, Phil Cooper, Tilla Raines, Steve Raines, Thad Raines, Bill Raines, Jed Raines, John Henson and Bill Clark.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Deacons of First Baptist Church and members of Stonewall Lodge No. 98.

Mr. Bobby R. Redfern, 65, of Mitchell entered into rest on Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at McDuffie Regional Medical Center, Thomson.
Mr. Redfern was a native of Washington County, but lived in Mitchell all of his life. He was retired from the Abion Kaolin Company.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 10, 2011, at Mitchell United Methodist Church, with Rev. Bill Seaman officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hooks and Audrey Johnson Redfern.
Survivors include his wife of 18 years, Emma Jean Redfern; one son, Gary E. Redfern of Kentucky; three daughters, Tina Latta of Alabama, Carla Hamilton of Palmetta, and Julie Redfern of Dalton; three stepsons, Larry Rosier of Thomson, James Rosier of Augusta, and George Rosier of Harlem; four stepdaughters, Patricia Ownby of Sparta, Deborah Lindsey, Gaylene Tanner and Elizabeth Denton, all of Sandersville; one brother, Terry Redfern of Gibson; and one sister, Carol Downs of Mitchell; 12 grandchildren; 15 step-grandchildren; and 15 step-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Deloris “Mercy” Scott Tennyson
Mrs. Deloris “Mercy” Scott Tennyson entered into rest on Feb. 14, 2011.
Mrs. Tennyson was born in Jefferson County on June 20, 1952, the daughter of Jacob Lewis and the late Cleophia Scott Shaw. At an early age she became a member of St. AME Church. She was a 1970 graduate of Jefferson County High School. On Nov. 25, 1971, she married
the late Al Tennyson.
Funeral services were held on Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, at 1 p.m. at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Louisville, with Pastor Rev. Willie D. Blockum and Rev. David Batts officiating.
Survivors include her children, Londya Carr (Leon), Christopher Tennyson, Dexter Tennyson (Bernadette), Damean Tennyson (Latasha), and Alandrea Dorsey (Fleming), all of Augsuta; father, Jacob Lewis of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; 11 siblings, Jerome Shaw of Las Vegas, Nev., Brenda Shaw of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Careese Shaw, Kenneth Shaw, Wrockelle Shaw and Pace Shaw (Evette), all of Augusta, Stevie Shaw (Felicia) of Tallahassee, Fla., Corrine Webbs and James Lewis, both of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Michael Lewis and Dwight Lewis, both of Miami, Fla.; 32 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a cousin who was like a brother, Alex Scott (Betty) of Louisville; friend, Alice Batts (Horace Jr.); godchildren, Johnny Rogers, Leslie Cruclup and Lakesha Williams; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mrs. Bessie Lois Wells Brown
Mrs. Bessie Lois Wells Brown, 72, of Louisville entered into rest on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2012, at University Hospital, Augusta.
Mrs. Brown was a native of Jefferson County, a member of the Hardeman Springfield Baptist Church where she joined at an early age. She attended the Jefferson County School System. She was employed with Gibson Garment Company from 1966 to 1978 and worked several years at Oxford Shirt Company until 1990.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012, at 2:30 p.m. at Hardeman Springfield Baptist Church and Cemetery.

Mrs. Annie Kate Gay McGahee
Mrs. Annie Kate Gay McGahee, 84, of Wadley entered into rest on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012, at Burke Memorial Hospital.
Born to the late Jessie Windom Gay and the late Luther Gay, Mrs. McGahee was a lifelong resident of Jefferson County, living most of her life in Wadley. Until the last few years, she was an active member of Wadley Baptist Church and the Gleaners Sunday School Class.
Funeral services were held at James Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Donald Lumpkin officiating. Interment followed in Mt. Horeb Baptist Church Cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her parents; seven siblings, Leonis Gay, Ernest Gay, Jim Gay, Sike Gay, Daisy Barrow, Rosabelle Wren and Earlene Barrow.
Survivors include her husband, Farris McGahee; children, Kathy McGahee Bowles (David), and Michael Keith McGahee (Lynn); four grandchildren, Kristi Bowles Griffin (Michael), Kelly Bowles, Brooke McGahee and Brandon McGahee; two great-grandchildren, Jackson Griffin and Aubrey Griffin; many nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Mr. Gene Tunny Peterson
Mr. Gene Tunny Peterson, 84, of Louisville entered into rest on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012, at his residence.
A native of Pearson, Mr. Peterson was a son of the late Dennis Paul and Miriam Paulk Peterson. He served in the Georgia National Guard and the U.S. Army for 30 years and had worked for Delta Airlines as a security guard and was of the Baptist faith.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2012, at Taylor Funeral Home, with Rev. Hardy Owens officiating. Graveside services with full military honors were held at 3 p.m. at Antioch Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Pearson, with Rev. John Peterson officiating.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Martha Lillian Mask Peterson.
Survivors include his son, Charlie Peterson of Louisville; daughter, Martha Peterson of Harlem; brothers, Hal Peterson of Florida, Rev. Mrs. Alma Marie Bishop Poppell
Mrs. Alma Marie Bishop Poppell, 90, of Sandersville entered into rest on Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012, in Harlem.
Mrs. Poppell was a native of Screven County, the daughter of the late John Bishop and the late Mattie Stewart Bishop. She was the wife of the late Clyde J. Poppell and the late Bill Whealton. Mrs. Poppell was a former Drill Sergeant with the United States Army and a veteran of World War II. She was a retired teacher with the Jefferson County Training Center and a homemaker. Mrs. Poppell was a member of the Sisters Baptist Church.
Graveside funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24, 2012, at Sisters Baptist Church Cemetery, Sandersville, with George Dickson officiating.
Survivors include her children, Dean Paul Poppell (Theresa) of Ocean Springs, Miss., Bruce Daniel Poppell (Sheila) of Rockford, Ala., Johnnie Michael Whealton of Sandersville, Gary Whealton (Christie) of San Antonio, Texas, and Wayne Whealton (Becky) of Hemlock, Ind.; three sisters, Reba B. Scott of Sandersville, Lucille Arata of Sunrise, Fla., and Joann Mullis (James) of Harlem; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and an aunt, Carie Bishop of Harlem.

Mr. Zade “Zack” Benjamine Salter Jr.
Mr. Zade “Zack” Benjamine Salter Jr., 92, of Fayetteville, formerly of East Point, entered into rest on Jan. 30, 2012.
Mr. Salter grew up in Louisville, and moved to Atlanta as a young adult. He served in the United States Army in the Philippines during World War II and also retired after 46 years with Southern Bell. He was a member of Fayetteville Christian Church and the Lamplighters Sunday School Class.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Fayetteville Christian Church, with Rev. Dan Roberts and Rev. Ralph Warren officiating. Burial followed at Camp Memorial Park.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Ruby Edmondson Salter; son, Kenny (Dorothy) Salter of Fayetteville; daughters, Marty Salter of Knoxville, Tenn., and Mary Anne Salter of Fayetteville; four granddaughters, Tammy Roberts, Megan Salter, Meredith Graves and Laura Payne; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Mr. Bruce Self
Mr. Bruce Self, 69, of Hephzibah entered into rest on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012.
Mr. Self was born in Blythe on Sept. 23, 1942. He was the son of the late Marion Reid and Kathryn Virginia Self. He graduated from SGA High School in 1960. He served in the United States Air Force, where he was stationed in Aviano, Italy. Mr. Self was a graduate of Augusta Technical College where he received an associate degree in electromechanical engineering. He developed the syllabus for this program for Augusta Technical College. Mr. Self worked with Olin Chemicals, Georgia Power Company at Plant Vogtle and at International Paper. He was a member of Bath Presbyterian Church and F&AM; Richmond Lodge. He was a pilot with both his commercial and IFR licenses.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Bath Presbyterian Church, Blythe. Committal services, with Masonic Graveside Rites and United States Air Force Honors, followed in the church cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 39 years, Lillian Gidget Self in February 2004.
Survivors include his life partner, Lola Clark of Hephzibah; children, Thomas Self Sr. of Hephzibah, and Teresa S. Wells (Heyward) of Stapleton; five grandchildren, Amber Dawn Self, Thomas Self Jr., Jamie Self, Reid Wells and Emily Wells; several siblings; and numerous friends.

Mr. John Lee Taylor Sr. entered into rest on Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012, surrounded by his family.
Mr. Taylor was born on Sept. 27, 1934, to the late Archie and Lishie Taylor in Washington County. He joined Pine Hill Baptist Church at an early age. He was a farmer and worked at Holmes Cannery and later retired from the Department of Transportation, Tennille.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012, at Pine Hill Baptist Church, Davisboro, with burial in the Pine Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and seven brothers.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Gilvin Jr.
