Mr. James Thompson
Mr. James Thompson, 79, of Wrens entered into rest on Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011, at Jefferson Hospital.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2011, at New Hope AME Church and Cemetery, Grange, with Rev. David Batts officiating.

Mr. Thompson was born in the Jefferson County Grange Community to the late Mr. and Mrs. Joe and Mamie Lee Davis Thompson Sr. He was a member of New Hope AME Church, Grange, where he served as steward pro-tem for 30 years. He received his education in the Jefferson County School System. He was married to the late Doris Brown Thompson on July 26, 1952. After their union, they relocated to Glascock County until 1987, and then to Wrens. He was employed as a farmer and with Georgia Tennessee for 20 years.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Luvern Thompson Johnson; and five brothers, Donnie, Irving, Charlie, Leotis and Ray.

Survivors include his children, Vernell Thompson of Wrens, Anthony (Beryl) Thompson of Augusta, and Janice (Charles) Broadus of Louisville; one grandson he reared as his own, Antwan (Shelnay) Page of Augusta; four sisters, Janet (Johnny) Morgan of Avera, Shirley Whitfield of Louisville, Lois Gordon of Stapleton, and Doretha (Joe) Wolfe of Miami, Fla.; six brothers, Joe (Willie Mae) Thompson and Rev. Dr. Dennis (Rev. Dr. Mary) Thompson of Louisville, George (Pat) Thompson and Namon (Jackie) Thompson of Miami, Fla., Roy Peebles and Elex Peebles of Coco, Fla.; one son-in-law, Gregory Johnson of Wrens; aunt, Cora McCall of Atlanta; six grandchildren, Yolanda, Antavius, Danielle, B.J. and Charles Jr.; great-grandchildren, Te’Liyah Johnson and Skylar Page; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Davis Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Beverly H. Whaley
Mrs. Beverly H. Whaley, 69, of Evans entered into rest on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011, at University Hospital.

Mrs. Whaley was a native of Augusta. She was a member of The Sanctuary Church.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2011, at 11 a.m. at The Sanctuary Church, with Pastor Brian Cockwell and Pastor Bobby Smith officiating. Burial followed at Bellevue Memorial Gardens.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Sue H. Hyman; father, Glenn Hyman; and sister, Bobbie Edge.

Survivors include her husband of 49 years, William A. Whaley of Evans; stepmother, Ruth Hyman of Norwood; one son, Daryl Whaley (Jeanette) of Evans; one daughter, Lynn Weathers (James) of Martinez; two brothers, Larry Hyman (Renell) of Evans, and Barry Hyman (Betty) of Norwood; two sisters, Ann Hubbard of Norwood, and Nell Hobbs (Tommy) of Avera; four grandchildren, David Weathers, Steffany Weathers, Brittany Reese, Taylor Reese; and two great-grandchildren, Layla Weathers and Cash Galati.

Mrs. Dana H. Taylor
Mrs. Dana H. Taylor, 52, of Warrenton entered into rest on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010, at University Hospital.

Mrs. Taylor was a lifelong resident of McDuffie and Warren counties. She was a member of Mt. Beulah Baptist Church. She was a parapro for the McDuffie County School System.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 31, 2010, at Mt. Beulah Baptist Church, with Rev. Roy Frierson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her father, D.C. Huff.

Survivors include her mother and stepfather, Laverne and Leroy Usry, Stapleton; sister, Gloria (Rick) Quarles, Cornelia; niece, Beth Chitwood; nephew, Ben Quarles; and a great-niece, Alyssa Chitwood.

Pallbearers were Aubrey Jones, Sam Kitchens, Mansel McTier, Cody Chitwood, Randy Taylor and Ben Quarles.

Curtis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Deacon Murphy Ponder
Deacon Murphy Ponder of Wadley entered into rest on Sunday, May 8, 2011, in Augusta.

Funeral services were held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, 2011, at San Clair Baptist Church, Wadley, with Rev. Frank Roberts officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his two daughters, Phyllis (Felix) Johnson, Augusta, and Barbara (Roger) Smith, Staten Island, N.Y.; two grandchildren; extended family, Shirley Williams Brown and Connie Brown; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers were his nephews, Leroy Ponder, Charlie Adams, Jerome Turner, Willie Jackson, Leroy Green and William Walker.

Hudson Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Clouise Huff Willoughby
Mrs. Clouise Huff Willoughby, 91, of Stapleton entered into rest on Sunday, May 8, 2011, at University Hospital.

Mrs. Willoughby was born to the late Lizzie Dupree Huff and the late Steve Huff and was the last surviving sibling out of 12. She was a member of Stapleton Baptist Church and retired with more than 20 years of service from Stapleton Garment Company.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 10, 2011, at 3 p.m. at James Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in Stapleton Baptist Church Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Eugene Willoughby.

Survivors include her children, James A. Willoughby (Shirley), Betty W. Purvis (Randy), Donnie E. Willoughby and Ronnie G. Willoughby; three grandchildren, Jimmy Willoughby, Chris Sheppard (Susan) and Anita Willoughby; two great-grandchildren, Daniel Sheppard and Alex Watkins; and many nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Smith Dickson, Harold Howard, Jessie Huff, Larry Huff, Lansin Newsome and Johnny Thompson.

James Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Paul Snyder Whittenberger Sr.
Mr. Paul Snyder Whittenberger Sr., 77, of Augusta entered into rest at his residence with his family by his side.

A private memorial service will be held for the family.

Mr. Whittenberger was born on July 2, 1933, in Akron, Ind. He served in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include his wife, Katrina Whittenberger; five sons, James Young (Jamie), Paul S. Whittenberger Jr. (Tainé), Kurt C. Whittenberger, Richard Whittenberger (Debbie), and Kevin Whittneberger; a daughter, Taunya Johns (Joseph); 14 grandchildren, Paul S. Whittenberger III, Richard Whittenberger Jr., J.P. Whittenberger, Telisa Davis, Tabitha Alligood, Audrey, Emily McDonald, Jacob Dean Whittenberger, Mia Allison, Noami Allison, James S. Young Jr., Mikayla Young, Oceh’aune Young and Cheyenne Hege; a brother, Charles Whittenberger (Carol); and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warriors Foundation, 4899 Belfort Road Suite 300, Jacksonville, Fla., 32256.

Mrs. Angela Renea Harkley
Funeral services for Mrs. Angela Renea Harkley, 45, of Warrenton were held on Saturday, April 23, 2011, at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Warrenton, with Pastor Rev. Richard E. Austin Jr. presiding and Rev. Michael Curry as eulogist. Interment was in Williams Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Mitchell.

Mrs. Vestula Hyman Hattaway
Mrs. Vestula Hyman Hattaway, 94, of Mitchell entered into rest on Thursday, April 21, 2011.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 24, 2011, at Mineral Springs Baptist Church, with burial in the Mineral Springs Cemetery.

The family suggests that donations be made to the Mineral Springs Baptist Church cemetery fund.

Mrs. Donna L. Pettit
Mrs. Donna L. Pettit of Augusta entered into rest on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at her residence.

Mrs. Pettit was born in Jefferson County, daughter of the late Mark E. and Louise Moore Lamb. She had worked in the home health field and worked as secretary for the Southeast Georgia Experimental Station in Midville. Mrs. Pettit was a member of Grace Independence Baptist Church and had been a children’s Sunday school teacher.

Funeral services were held on Friday, April 22, 2011, at St. Johns United Methodist Church at 11 a.m., with Rev. Bobby Taylor Jr. and Rev. Pat Holbert officiating. Interment followed in Bethany cemetery in Wadley.

Survivors include her husband, William G. Pettit, Augusta; brother, Jack Lamb, Wadley; and four sisters, Betty Anderson, Wadley, Ann L. Oglesby (Donald) Wadley, Judy Oglesby (Leonard), Midville, and Peggy Powell (John M.) Wadley.

Pallbearers were Ronnie Lamb, Davey Lamb, Scott Oglesby, Keith Powell, John Powell and Donald Oglesby.

Mrs. Della Mae Smith
Funeral services for Mrs. Della Mae Smith, 86, of Wrens were held on Saturday, April 23, 2011, at New Zion Baptist Church at 2 p.m., with Pastor Rev. Bennie Holmes presiding and Rev. Dr. W.L. Jones as eulogist. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include three sons, Henry James Smith Jr., Wrens, Luther (Sylvia) Smith Jr., New Carrollton, Md., Michael (Mary) Smith, Wrens; two daughters, Wanda Smith and Ruthie ( Willie Lee) Stone, all of Wrens; three sisters, Minnie S. McColley, Atlanta, Willie Mae Burke, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Johnie Evelyn Salter, Atlanta; three brothers, Ulysses Salter, Atlanta, Johnny Salter Jr., Indianapolis, Ind., and Johnny Salter III, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Freeman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Cynthia T. McCoy
Mrs. Cynthia T. McCoy of Hephzibah entered into rest on Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at Doctors Hospital.

Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.

Survivors include her children, Jaymes M. Beasley-McCoy, LeAnde (John) Avery, Kratrina Dogon, Wesley Dogon, Justin Dogon, Krenea Dogon; grandchildren, Jazmine Avery, NaJae Avery, JaNae Avery; siblings, Daphyne Beasley, Phrycilla Beasley, Mary Beasley, Christine Bealsey, Wanda Beasley and Charles Beasley; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Lilliam A. Bulford Sessoms
Funeral service for Mrs. Lilliam A. Bulford Sessoms, 86, of Wrens were held on Sunday, April 17, 2011, at 3 p.m. at Freeman Funeral Home Chapel.

Mr. George Tucker Jr.
Mr. George Tucker Jr. of Louisville entered into rest on Saturday, April 16, 2011, at University Hospital, Augusta.

Mr. Tucker was a native of Glascock County, the son of the late George Tucker Sr. and Lue Vinnie Hall Tucker, and the widow of the late Lillie Mae Wilcher Tucker. At an early age he joined the Williams Grove Baptist, and for most of his life, worked as a logger. He was an honorable discharged veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at 2 p.m. at Second Mineral Spring Baptist Church, Hamburg, with Pastor Rev. Robert Smith presiding and Minister Lewis Neal officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his children, George (Mary Alice) Tucker III of Wrens, Vivian T. Lundy of Louisville, Larry D. Tucker of Augusta, Robert Lewis Tucker, Darrell Lynn Tucker, all of Wrens; stepson, Clifford (Tiffany) Tucker of Wrens; brothers and sisters, Eva Lue Mills, Willie Lue Neal of Mitchell, Jessie Mae Nelson and Willie Elbert Tucker of Warrenton, Willie Mae Lawrence of Sandersville, and Jessie Lee (Inell) Tucker of Sanford, N.C.; grandchildren, Janice Tobie, Glenn Tobie, Jackie Tobie, Glenn Tucker, Lynn Tucker, Leonard Tucker, Shader Barron, Sherrod Tucker, Tabitha (Donnie) Hodges, Lealita Lundy, Shecell Tucker, Ieasha Tucker, Shenell Smith, Larry Jermaine Tucker, Robert Moore, Randy Moore, Mercedes Tucker, Clifford James Tucker, Damian Dixon and Freddrivous Hobbs; 34 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Mr. Collins Loyd “C.L.” Usry
Mr. Collins Loyd “C.L.” Usry, 69, entered into rest Wednesday morning, April 13, 2011 at the University Hospital in Augusta GA.

One of nine children born to the late Virginia McGahee Usry and the late Garvin Usry Sr., Mr. Usry was raised in the Wrens-Stapleton area of Jefferson County. He moved to Augusta where he was a crane operator and a member of International Union of Operating Engineers Local No. 474. He was an active member of Fleming Baptist Church until his health declined.

Funeral services were held on Friday, April 15, 2011, at 11 a.m. at James Funeral Home, with Rev. Wayne Usry officiating. The family had a private committal service in the Westview cemetery in Thomson.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Hinton Usry; brother, Gerald Usry; and his sister, Jody Reese.

Survivors include his children, David Usry (Jeanine) and Donna Usry; three brothers, Garvin Usry Jr. (Edith), Earl Usry, and Wayne Usry (Barbara Ann); three sisters, Velda Hadden, Joann Wren and Jeannine Stevenson (Norman); three grandchildren, Evan Usry, Chris Thompson and Courtney Thompson; and many friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to James Funeral Home, PO Box 588, Wrens, GA 30833.

Mrs. Carolyn Edna Tapley Manley
Mrs. Carolyn Edna Tapley Manley, 84, of Swainsboro entered into rest on Thursday, March 10, 2011, at Unihealth Post Acute Care of Swainsboro.

Mrs. Manley, born in Bartow, had lived in Emanuel County all her life. She worked in the dry cleaning business for many years and was a member of Nails Creek Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, March 13, 2011, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Tomlinson Funeral Home, with Rev. Franklin Sasser officiating. Interment follow in the Brinson Cemetery, with Elder Tommy Rountree officiating.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Solomon and Betsy Scarboro Tapley;

three brothers, Billy Q. Tapley, J.A. Tapley and Herschel Tapley; and two sisters, Alma Nunn and Callie Salter.

Survivors include three daughters, Patsy Millwood Overstreet of Twin City, Sherry Millwood Love (Jimmy) of Soperton, and Martha Millwood Jones (Shorty) of Twin City; five grandchildren, Holly Wimberly, Samuel “Jo Jo” Overstreet, Brandy Canady-Taylor, Monica Millwood Moseley and James Ray “Jamey” Canady; eight great-grandchildren; and step-grandchildren, Jason (Angie) Love, Jennifer (Tripp) Grace and Stewart Love.

Pallbearers were Keith Branch, Mike Tapley, Jeff Tapley, John Tapley, James Canady and Thurman Davis.

Honorary pallbearers were Caretakers of United Hospice, Lakeside Personal Care Home and Unihealth Post Acute Care of Swainsboro.

Memorials may be made to the Brinson cemetery Association Fund, in care of B. Lewis Brinson, 10400 Cranchester Way, Alpharetta, GA 30022.
