Mr. Willie Lee Tarver
Mr. Willie Lee Tarver of Wadley entered into rest on Saturday, Aug. 7, 2010, at his residence.
Mr. Tarver, son of the late Eddie Willie Tarver and Lula Mae Tarver, was born in Bartow in May 1932. He received his education in the Jefferson County School System. In 1952, Mr. Tarver entered the military to fight in the Korean War at the age of 21. After his tour of duty, he joined in holy matrimony to Mae Florence Wesby of Wadley in 1955. He was retired after many years of service from Thermo King Corporation in Louisville, where he worked in management for 25 years. He then began a long career as a folk artist working with cement and metal welded sculptures. Mr. Tarver was well-known in the art community. He and his wife made numerous television documentaries pertaining to his art. Mr. Tarver’s art has been displayed in Atlanta, New York, New Jersey and Florida. He was a member of Victory Temple in Swainsboro under the leadership of Pastor Christine Peebles.
A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14, 2010, at Wadley Middle School Auditorium, with Pastor Christine Peebles officiating.
Survivors include his wife, Mae F. Tarver; daughter, Diane T. Davis of Wadley; four sons, Ricky K. Tarver of Chicago, Ill., Timothy (Donna) Tarver of Wadley, Monroe S. Tarver of Charlotte, N.C., and Willie (Parshell) Tarver of Louisville; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three brothers, Ben (Lula) Tarver, Freddie (Juanita) Tarver and Curtis (Diane) Tarver; five sisters, Elizabeth (Robert) Heggs, Betty (Earl) Seabrooks, Barbara (Herman) Lattimore, Katie McGee and Essie (Eddie) Thomas; and one goddaughter, Pharshanda Hudson.

Mr. Roy Brookins
Mr. Roy Brookins, 84, of Gibson entered into rest on Monday, Aug. 16, 2010, at his residence in Beaufort, S.C.
Born in Washington County, he was the youngest of the late Smallie Lancaster and Lonnie Penn Brookins’ five children. Mr. Brookins served in the U.S. Marine Corps and served during WWII, Korean and Vietnam wars, receiving the following medals and citations including the Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal with four stars, American Campaign, Asiatic Theatre Campaign, National Defense with one star, China Service, WWII Victory Medal, Korea Service Medal with three stars, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, United Nations Service Medal, M1 Rifle Expert, and 1956, and 45-Caliber Pistol Expert. After retiring as GySgt, he opened Burton Septic Tank Service. Before he and his wife officially retired, they owned Brookins Mobile Home Park on Parris Island Gateway for 40 years.
Funeral services were held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 20, 2010, at Mt. Zion Congregational Church, Mitchell, with the Rev. Al Kurtz officiating. Interment with full military honors followed in the church cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his oldest daughter, Linda Brookins Lamb; three brothers and a sister.
Survivors include his wife, Vera Walden Brookins; son, Roy K. Brookins (Lucinda), Beaufort, S.C.; daughter, Trinda Brookins Rabon, Beaufort, S.C.; five grandchildren, David K. Brookins, Katie E. Brookins, Linda Rabon-Hardison, Santee Guy Rabon and Angela Lamb Barrow (Shane), Edgehill; four great-grandchildren, Blake Lamb, Lyn Barrow, Ayden Barrow and Malaki Hardison; two sisters-in-law, Maxie Walden Redfern, Gibson, and Helen Walden Jones, Macon; nieces and nephews, Sandra Niedens, Forsythe, Gwen Futch, Myrtle Beach, S.C., Judy R. Dixon, Gibson, Robbie Brookins, Midway, Michael Redfern, Gibson, and Dale and Bill Jones, both of Macon; friend, Charles Barnard, Beaufort S.C.; and many extended family and friends in Georgia and South Carolina.

Mrs. Ruth Rabun Clements
Mrs. Ruth Rabun Clements, 86, of Wrens entered into rest on Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2010.
Born in Warren County to the late Lillian Landrum and Homer A. Rabun, Mrs. Clements made Wrens her home at the age of 22 and was an active member of Wrens United Methodist Church, teaching Sunday school for many years. Moving in 1998 to Charlotte, N.C., to be closer to her daughter and family, she became a resident at The Laurels Assisted Living Center but remained a member of her church. She was adopted by the congregation of Cooks Memorial Presbyterian Church.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 21, 2010, at Wrens United Methodist Church, with Rev. Griffin Thompson officiating. Interment followed at Wrens Memorial Cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Taylor Clements; two brothers, Carl D. Rabun and George Rabun; and two sisters, Bessie R. Thigpen and Ruby R. Raley.
Survivors include her daughter, Patsy C. Spivey (Bob), Charlotte, N.C.; two grandchildren, Tancey S. Mayhew, Cornelius, N.C., and Bobby Spivey (Colleen), Charlotte, N.C.; four great-grandchildren, Annabelle Mayhew, Robert Spivey, Michael Spivey and Emma Spivey; sister-in-law, Katie C. Rabun; and many nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were her nephews, Clark Rabun, Peritt Rabun, Bill Raley, Justin Raley, Mitch Raley, Phil Raley, Phillip Raley, Michael Todd and Larry Wooten.

Miss Sandra “Kay Kay” Combs
Miss Sandra “Kay Kay” Combs, 53, of Louisville entered into rest on Saturday, Aug. 21, 2010, at a local hospital.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 27, 2010, at 2 p.m. at St. Matthews African Methodist Episcopal Church, with Pastor Rev. Albert Thomas officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Bethel Benevolent Society Cemetery.
Miss Combs was a native of Jefferson County, the daughter of Casper Combs Jr. and the late Thelma Washington Combs, a member of the St. Matthews AME Church, where she sang in the choir, served as a Trustee and a class leader. She was a 1974 graduate of Louisville High School, a member of the Spring Bethel Benevolent Society and Louisville Physical Fitness Club. She was employed at Delilah Manufacturing Company for 18 years, Quick Set Company for over seven years and later Thomson Plastic.
Survivors include her children, Tara S. Combs, Tory Maurice Combs and Jiel Carter Combs, all of Louisville; father, Casper Combs Jr. of Louisville; siblings, Anna Davis of New York, N.Y, Casper (Sherry) Combs III of Louisville, Patricia Combs-Gamble and Brenda Jones, both of Augusta, Catherine (David) Henderson of St. Petersburg, Fla., Samuel Washington of Atlanta, Janice (Clarence) Patterson of Louisville, Thelma Delores Combs of New York, N.Y., and Glenn Ray Washington of Louisville; aunts and uncles, Hattie (Bobby) Boatwright and Willie Curtis, all of Louisville, Paul (Deola) Washington of Fort Valley, and Catherine Washington of Miami, Fla.; nieces and nephews, James Davis of Louisville, Latricie (Preston) Burley of Charlotte, N.C., Dr. Delores (Kermit) Johnson of St. Louis, Mo., Joe Jones Jr. of Augusta, and Kayla Washington of Atlanta; a multitude of cousins, other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Ruby A. Newsome
Mrs. Ruby A. Newsome, 101, of Thomson entered into rest on Monday, Aug. 16, 2010.
Mrs. Newsome was a native of McDuffie County. She was a retired LPN from University Hospital and a homemaker. She was a member of the Reedy Creek Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2010, in the Curtis Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. John Jenkins officiating. Burial was in the Reedy Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis Newsome Sr.; two sons, Harold and Hodges Newsome; and a daughter, Shirley Ailene Newsome.
Survivors include six sons, Willis Newsome Jr., Harlem, Robert Jay Newsome, Thomson, James C. (Chick) Newsome, Stapleton, Edward Newsome, Wrens, Wallace P. Newsome, Kissimmee, Fla., and Donald M. Newsome, Thomson; 17 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; and caregiver, Joyce Hatcher.

Mr. Walter “Sid” Newton
Mr. Walter “Sid” Newton, 75, of Matthews entered into rest on Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2010, at Gibson Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Born in Augusta, to the late Lucille Rodgers and Walter Sydnor Newton Sr., Mr. Newton attended the public schools of Richmond County, including Monte Sano Elementary and the Academy of Richmond County, graduating in 1953. He then attended the Junior College of Augusta and the University of Georgia in Athens, where he studied zoology and herpetology and received a bachelor of science degree in chemistry in 1957. Upon graduation, he was a chemistry teacher at Hephzibah High School for five years. He then began a long career at Continental Can Company, now International Paper, where he was a chemist, laboratory supervisor and quality control supervisor and retired after 32 years of service. He held memberships in the Technical Association of Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI), the National Service Teachers Association, the Ga-Lina Walk to Emmavs No. 6, and The National Rifle Association. He was an active member of Wrens Church of God and the Brushy Creek Hunting Club.
He enjoyed amateur photography, wood-working projects and collection of fishing and hunting memorabilia.
Memorial services were held at Wrens Church of God on Thursday, Aug. 19, 2010, at 6 p.m., with Rev. Jason Burton and Rev. Jimmy Raines officiating.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Jane Ussery and Ann Dillender.
Survivors include his wife, Joy Newton; sons, Chris Newton (Nenita) of Havelock, N.C., and Chip Newton of Augusta; grandchildren Christina Newton, Murphy Newton and William Newton, all of Havelock, N.C.; three stepchildren, Janet Vaughan, Martinez, Donna Zapata, Evans, and Christopher Waters, Athens; sister-in-law, Sherma Ashcraft, Warner Robins; and black labs, Sam and Lucy.

Mrs. Pauline W. Borders, 81, of Thomson entered into rest on Friday, Aug. 27, 2010, at the Thomson Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Mrs. Borders was a native of Jefferson County, but had lived in Thomson for many years. She was the daughter of the late Tommie and Lizzie Kate Wasden of Louisville. She was a homemaker and a member of Thomson First Baptist Church.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010, at the Curtis Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. James Ramsey officiating. Burial was in the Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens.
She was preceded in death by her husband, C. Reid Borders.

Mr. Sylvester Hill Sr.
Mr. Sylvester Hill Sr., 88, of Louisville entered into rest on Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010, at his residence.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Greater St. Matthews AME Church and Chorus Society Cemetery.
Mr. Hill was a native of Jefferson County, the son of Norman Jordan and Antee Hill Jackson. He was married
to late Laura “Mut” Hill. Mr. Hill was a member of the Greater St. Matthews African Methodist Episcopal Church, where he served on the Trustee Board, Steward Board and as treasurer of the church for many years. He was also a member of the Sons of Louisville Masonic Lodge #579 and a retired cement finisher.
Survivors include one son, Sylvester (Anita) Hill Jr. of Louisville; one that he reared as his own, Lonnie Hines Jr. of Louisville; two daughters, Elizabeth Gibbons of Elkhart, Ind., and Sara “Lula” Walker of Augusta; 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; siblings, George Bostic of Elkhart, Ind., Lorenzo Jordan, Diane Bryant and Gale Jordan, all of Vidalia, Angela Daniels of Los Angeles, Calif., Iris Lockhart of Augusta, Mildred Rollins of Jacksonville, Fla., Ruby Lee Ervin of Miami, Fla., Mary Spikes of Ailey, Carolyn Johnson of Savannah, and Luella Jordan of New Jersey; several nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Mr. Jack H. Hobbs
Mr. Jack H. Hobbs, 89, of Wrens entered into rest on Monday, Aug. 23, 2010, at Trinity Hospital of Augusta.
A native of Jefferson County, Mr. Hobbs served honorably during WWII in the US Army from 1944-1946, participating in the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign and Japan Occupation Campaign. He returned home to the family farm and in 1950 was employed at Fort Gordon with the Post Engineers’ Department, where he retired after 29 years of service. Mr. Hobbs was a member of American Legion Post 229 for over 60 years. He also served as president of McDuffie County Chapter of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association Chapter 1364 for over 26 years. He was a lifelong member of Ebenezer ARP Church where he served in many different positions. At the time of his death, he was Ruling Elder, Church Treasurer and taught the Adult Sunday School Class.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 26, 2010, at Ebenezer ARP Church, with Rev. Gary Jones officiating. Interment, with military honors, followed in the church cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Eunice Burke and John H. Hobbs; siblings, Luther Hobbs, James Andrew Hobbs, George Robert Hobbs, Sara Lizzie Townsend and Margaret Hobbs Rabun.
Survivors include his sister, Fannie Belle Hobbs; niece, Anne Townsend Clark (John); a great-nephew, James F. Clark; a great-niece, Linda C. Santarone (Drew), Milledgeville; a great-great-niece, Jennifer S. Spencer (Bryant), Milledgeville; and numerous friends.

Miss Susan Lucille Lamn
Miss Susan Lucille Lamn, 62, of Midville entered into rest on Friday, Aug. 27, 2010, at Heritage Healthcare of Old Capital in Louisville.
A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Miss Lamn was the daughter of the late Lloyd and Lucille Krost Lamn. She graduated from Pompano High School. In her youth she taught martial arts and later became a chess player.
Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 30, 2010, at Taylor Funeral Home. Burial will be Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010, in the Pampano Beach City cemetery in Pampano Beach, Fla.
Survivors include her brother, Charles Lamn (Regina) of Tequesta, Fla.; stepbrother, Horace Hogan of Midville; and nephew, Todd Lamn of Tequesta, Fla.

Miss Pearly Ruth Lowery
Miss Pearly Ruth Lowery of Louisville entered into rest on Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2010, at her residence.
Miss Lowery was born in Jefferson County, the daughter of the late James and Lonie Bell Gibbons Lowery. She received her education in the Jefferson County School System, and was a member of Pierce Grove Baptist Church until her health failed.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010, at Pierce Grove Baptist Church in Louisville, with Rev. Johnny R. Sampson officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include her children, J.T. Lowery, Betty (Jim) Kelly and Freddie (Elizabeth) Lowery, all of Louisville, and Dorothy (Glenn) Gaines of Wrens; sisters, Dora Pickney, Jodie Gibbons and Ann McCoy of New York, N.Y., and Johnnie Mae (Gregory) Whitfield of Louisville; brothers, Willie James Lowery of Louisville, and Willie James Heggs of Jacksonville, Fla.; grandchildren, Conquisha Lowery, Sophia Lowery, Freddie Rico Lowery and Ronald T.
