Mrs. Shirley Elaine Goldate Powers
Mrs. Shirley Elaine Goldate Powers, 91, of Midville entered into rest on Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010.
Mrs. Powers was born in New Orleans, La., on Jan. 20, 1919, and lived there into adulthood. In 1947, she married
Robert Hill Powers, and moved to Georgia with him, living out her life in his hometown of Midville. She was a member of Midville United Methodist Church, holding leadership positions on the administrative board and United Methodist Women.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010, in the Midville United Methodist Church, with Rev. Tony Smith and Rev. Roland Fall officiating. Interment followed in the family plot at Midville City Cemetery.
She was preceded in death by parents, Bernhard Theodore Goldate and Carmen Mugnier Goldate; husband, Robert Hill Powers Sr.; and a sister, Bernice G. Mohr.
Survivors include her children, Robert Hill Powers Jr. (Suzanne) of Midville, Aurie P. Allen of Martinez, and Valerie P. Saxon (Glynn) of Midville; one sister, Vera G, Reynolds of Harlingen, Texas; eight grandchildren, Josef C. Patchen III of Augusta, Laura P. Krejci (Richard) of Columbia, David N. Abernathy of Seattle, Rev. R. Grant Abernathy (Rachel) of Lumpkin, Carmen G. Allen of Martinez, Caleb P. Allen of Martinez, Jessica L. Powers of Hilton Head, and Robert H. Powers III of Key West; one great-grandson, Max Abernathy of Lumpkin; several step-grandchildren; step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Pallbearers were Ralph Sandeford, Robert Evans, Marion “Butch” Brinson, Bill Rountree, Hyland G. Bunn, and Jeff Boatright.
Honorary pallbearers were Hogarth Sandeford, George Holloway, Buck Brannan, Dr. Frank Carter and Dr. Walter Voyles.

Mr. Lester “Boy Dogg” Dawson
Mr. Lester “Boy Dogg” Dawson of Avera entered into rest on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010, at Gibson Health and Rehab in Gibson.
Mr. Dawson was born on Oct. 1, 1938, to the parentage of the late Cleveland Dawson and Cleo Blair Dawson in Avera. He later moved and lived in Decatur for a number of years. He returned to Avera in the the 1970s.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010, at 2 p.m. at Gethsemane Baptist Church, Avera, with Rev. Carlos M. Newton Sr. officiating.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Larry “Ed Willie” Polen; and two sisters, Mary Lue Brown and Ann DeWitt.
Survivors include his son, Anthony Dawson of Decatur; two sisters, Ollie Ree Roberts of Stapleton, and Mattie Bell Blair of Avera; one brother, Rev. C.W. Dawson of Merchantville, N.J.; niece and caregiver, Melvin Louise Blair of Avera; three aunts, Lola Mae Roberts of Stapleton, Eddie Daniels of Wrens, and Julia Stone of Atlanta; one brother-in-law, Robert Hobbs Brown of Gibson; friends, Jimmy Lee Stone and James Edward Roberts Jr., both of Avera, and Johnny and Willie James Jordan, both of Stapleton; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Mrs. Mamie Lou Landrum Herrick
Mrs. Mamie Lou Landrum Herrick, 70, of Columbus, Miss., entered into rest on Friday, Aug. 27, 2010, at Aurora Australis Lodge, Columbus, Miss.
Mrs. Herrick was born Jan. 16, 1940, in Avera, to the late James “Jim” and Willie Sheppard Landrum. She was a resident of Columbus, Miss., for the past 45 years and having moved from Brooksville, Miss. Mrs. Herrick was a retired dietician with Aurora Australis Lodge with five years of service.
Graveside services were held on Monday, Aug. 30, 2010, at 10 a.m. at Friendship Cemetery, Columbus, Miss., with Bro. Jeff James officiating.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sons, John Richard Herrick and Richard Herrick; and brothers, Franklin Landrum and George A. Landrum Sr.
Survivors include her husband, Richard William?“Bill”?Herrick, Columbus, Miss.; daughters, Bea DeSmidt, Caledonia, Miss., Mary Tuggle, Columbus, Miss., and Elizabeth “Liz” (David) Paine, Columbus, Miss.; sons, Willy (Fran) Herrick, Columbus, Miss., Mike Herrick, Columbus, Miss., and Matthew Herrick, Franklin, Ky.; sister, Madeline Ware, Milledgeville; sister-in-law, Helen Landrum, Stapleton; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Mr. Paul Elmo Hutchinson Jr.
Mr. Paul Elmo Hutchinson Jr., 79, of Louisville entered into rest on Sunday, Sept. 12, 2010, at Jefferson Hospital.
A native of Dublin, Mr. Hutchinson was the son of the late Paul and Elizabeth Branch Hutchinson Sr. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict. He retired after 25 years of service from the J.P. Stevens Company as a textile supervisor. Mr. Hutchinson was a member of the Louisville Methodist Church and a member of the Methodist Men’s Club.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2010, at Louisville United Methodist Church, with Rev. David Hibberts, Rev. David Boggs and Rev. Ray Jenkins officiating. Burial was in the Louisville City Cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Lenora Ogburn Hutchinson of Louisville; son, Richard Hutchinson (Julie) of Louisville; grandson, Richard P. Hutchinson of Louisville; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Larry Rhodes, Jimmy Goodwin, Denny Livesay, Wayne Thigpen, Jonas Gamble, Ronnie Bargainner, Tom Armistead, Jim Peters and Perry Darley.

Mr. John “Johnnie” Schneider McElmurray
Mr. John “Johnnie” Schneider McElmurray, 89, of Hephzibah entered into rest on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010, at his residence.
Mr. McElmurray was the last surviving member of a family of eight brothers and sisters. He was a 1943 graduate of The University of Georgia and a lifelong resident of Hephzibah. A member of Hephzibah United Methodist Church, he served on the Board of Jefferson Electric for 53 years. In 2001 he was awarded “Georgia Distinguished Cooperator” by the Georgia Cooperative Council for his service in helping manage and promote rural electrification in Georgia. He served on the local board of the Georgia Farm Bureau for over 50 years.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2010, at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Thomas Poteet and Son, with Rev. T. G. Hall officiating. Interment followed in Westover Memorial Park.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Mary P. McElmurray; daughter, Mary Margaret Bagwell (Don) of Cornelia; son, John S. McElmurray Jr. of Hephzibah; grandchildren, Leigh Scroggs (Jake) of Athens, Sara McElmurray of Atlanta, and Henry McElmurray of Augusta.
Pallbearers were his nephews, Bob McElmurray, Henry McKie, Bill McKie, Bill West, Bob Matthews Jr. and Andy McElmurray.

Mr. Gleman McGahee
Mr. Gleman McGahee, 81, of Avera entered into rest on Friday, Sept. 10, 2010, at Gibson Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Born to the late Anna Belle Sheppard McGahee and the late Dewey Joe McGahee, Mr. McGahee lived in Jefferson County and moved to Florida to work with Mac’s Power Gas Company delivering propane gas. After several years, he bought the company. After his retirement, he moved back to Jefferson County.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2010, at James Funeral Home, with Rev. Donald Lumpkin and Rev. Ray Sullivan officiating. Interment followed at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Avera.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jessie Hadden McGahee; and parents.
Survivors include his wife, Malene Padgett-McGahee; son, Robert “Mickey” McGahee (Brenda); brother, Farris “Sack” McGahee; three grandchildren, Rose McGahee, Amy McGahee and Megan Jessie McGahee; one great-grandson, Robert Zachary Morris; three stepsons, Johnnie Padgett (Sherry), Wayne Padgett (Marsha), and Charles Padgett (Sue); several nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Mr. Leonard Parish
Mr. Leonard Parish, 86, of Garden City entered into rest on Sunday, Sept. 5, 2010.
Mr. Parish was a veteran of World War II, and retired from the Norfolk-Southern Railway System after 40 plus years of service.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010, at Hillcrest Abbey West cemetery on Dean Forest Road.
He was preceded in death by his two sisters, Marie Odom and Betty Sue Parish.
Survivors include his wife of more than 63 years, Mary “Betty” Parish; son, Bill (Sandra) Parish; two daughters, Nan (Chuck) Jenkins and Patsy (Gerald) Ethridge; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Barbara Powell
Mrs. Barbara Powell, 70, of Wadley entered into rest on Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2010, at University Hospital in Augusta.
Mrs. Powell, a native of Jefferson County, was a retired office manager in the commercial trucking business and a lifelong member of St. Johns United Methodist Church.
Funeral services were held on Friday, Sept. 10, 2010, at 11 a.m. at St. Johns United Methodist Church, with Rev. Pat Holbert officiating. Interment followed in the Bethany Cemetery, Wadley.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Leniece Hickox.
Survivors include her husband, Jerry D. Powell; two sons, James A. Powell (Karen) and Mitchell Powell; daughter, Patricia Bates (Russ); six grandchildren, John Paul Debruhl, Melissa Powell, Katie Debruhl, Ryan Powell, Andrew Powell and Heather Powell; three brothers, James W. Moore (Glenda), Charles R. Moore (Cheryl) and Timothy E. Moore (Sherry); and a sister, Debra Adams (Joe).?

Mr. Matthew Ryan Ackron
Mr. Matthew Ryan Ackron, 22, of Louisville entered into rest on Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2010.
A native of Louisville, Mr. Ackron was a son of Lynn Jones Hall and Peter Ackron. He attended the Louisville Church of God and had worked as a welder and cabinet maker.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 19, 2010, at Central Baptist Church in Louisville, with Rev. David Davis officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Ronald Jones; and great-grandparents, John and Polly Polan.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Lynn and Van Hall of Louisville; father and stepmother, Peter and Barbara Ackron of Jesup; brothers, Dylan Hall and Hunter Hall, both of Louisville; sister Cassie Ackron of Jesup; grandparents, Floyd and Mary Lou Griffith of Garden City, Mich., Freddie and Brenda Andrews of Eulonia, Delores Hall of Louisville, and Jack and Nita Lamb of Wadley; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Mr. Charles Edward Barnes
Mr. Charles Edward Barnes, 79, of Matthews died in a house fire at his residence on Sunday, Sept. 12, 2010.
A private ceremony will be held to commemorate his life.
Mr. Barnes served in the U.S. Army during the Korean and Vietnam wars and, after 26 years of service, retired as Master Sergeant. He traveled the world, but decided to retire in Georgia.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lillian Belle Headley Barnes and Joseph P. Barnes; and son, Kenneth Patrick.
Survivors include five sons, Timothy, Stephen, Thomas, Christopher and Michael; daughter, Kerri Overmeyer; brother, Terry; sister, Brenda; and seven grandchildren, Jordan, Austin, Justin, Trevor, Alexandria, Richard and Kenneth.
