Mrs. Katie Hickson McGahee
Mrs. Katie Hickson McGhee entered into rest on Monday, Sept. 17, 2007, in Wadley.

Her funeral was held on Thursday, Sept. 20, 2007, at 11 a.m. at Brinson Hill Baptist Church in Wadley, with the Rev. Dr. David Kemp officiating and Elder Betty Perez, assisting. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Coach Marce McGhee, Grovetown; three sons, Rodgerick (LaTasha) Hickson, Wrens, and Kelvin Hickson and Octavious Hickson, Wadley; her mother, Juanita Hickson, Wadley; her father, Robert James Hickson Sr., Bartow; five sisters, Mimi C. Hill, Orlando, Fla., Annie Lois (John) Lewis, Connie Carswell, Linda (Michael) Lewis and Sandra Hickson, Wadley; five brothers, Robert James Hickson Jr., Riverdale, Gregory Hickson and Nathan Hickson, Wadley, and Darrell (Jeanette) Hickson and Willie Hickson, Augusta; her father-in-law, James Williams, Hamilton, Ohio; three additional brothers-in-law, two additional sisters-in-law, nine grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers were Carlton White, LaKendrick Carswell, Lorenzo Stone, Delfin Sherrod and Maurice Gamble.

Hudson Mortuary, Wadley, was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Bobby LeRoy Reese
Mr. Bobby LeRoy Reese, husband of Jean Reese of Hephzibah, died on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2007, at his residence.

Mr. Reese was a native of Glascock County and lived in the Augusta area most of his life. He was retired from Richmond County as an Electrical Inspector. He was a Veteran of the United States Navy and a member of Hephzibah Church of God.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2007, at 2 p.m. at The Poteet Funeral Homes South Chapel, with Rev. Jody Boulineau and Rev. Bruce Flowers officiating. Interment followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Survivors include three sons, Bobby Dwayne Reese (Sharon), Stacey Reese (Holly), and Jeffery Reese (Tammy); one daughter, Deborah Myers (Terry) all of Hephzibah; one sister, Sadie Smith of Gibson; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Shane and Shawn Myers, Matthew, Adam, Daniel and Preston Reese.

The Poteet Funeral Homes South Chapel, Augusta, was in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Mrs. Florence D. Reese
Mrs. Florence D. Reese, of Thomson, entered into rest Sept. 17, 2007, at University Hospital in Augusta.

Ms. Reese was born in Lauderdale County, Miss. and was the daughter of the late Thomas Grady Wiggins and the late Carrie I. Garrett Wiggins but lived in Thomson most of her life. She worked at Uniroyal in Thomson for 18 years and retired as a baker from Wal-Mart. Mrs. Reese was also a member of Marshall Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, 2007, at Beggs Funeral Home Chapel Thomson, with Rev. John Prater officiating. Interment followed at Marshall Baptist Church Cemetery.

Survivors include son, Ruben Reese (Lucy), Stapleton; sisters, Mary Wright, Lauderdale Co., Miss., Edith Wiggins, Cuba, Ala., and Maxine Towbridge, Las Vegas, Nev.; brothers, John Wiggins, Lauderdale, Miss. and Larry Wiggins, Purvis, Miss.; and grandson, Scott Reese, Appling.

Beggs Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements.

Mrs. Josie Brown
Mrs. Josie Brown entered into rest on Friday, Aug. 24, 2007, at University Hospital.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 1, at 11 a.m. at the Pine Hill Baptist Church, Louisville, with the Rev. Christopher Durden, Pastor, officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her son Welton Brown.

Survivors include her children; Mrs. Josephine (Theodis) Hudson, Carolyn Birt, Annie Brown and Brenda (Ronnie) Thomas; six grandchildren; Nancy Hudson, Anita (Eric) Johnson, Karen (Corey) McCord, Kendolyn (Nigel) Smith, Tonya (Thaddeus) Miller and Daniel Birt; ten great-grandchildren, four girls and six boys; six sisters, Minnie Nelson, Eula Walker, Margaret Jackson, Lula (Marion) Stone, Elizabeth (Rodney) Garrett, Mary Brown; two brothers, Willie (Betty) Ghant and Alden ( Lue Ellen) Ghant, four sisters-in- law; and a host of other relatives and loving friends.

Freeman Funeral Home, Wrens, was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Eugene Jones Jr.
Mr. Eugene Jones Jr. of Wadley, died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2007, in a Richmond County hospital.

Mr. Jones was a native of Queens County, N.Y. and had lived in Jefferson County, Wadley for several years.

He was a member of First Baptist Church.

He received his education in the Jefferson County School System and he attended Savannah State College and Swainsboro Technical College.

He was a Boy Scout Troop Leader, Troop #269, he was active with Springboard Club, Youth Camp, Club Independence, Higher Hope Boys and Girls Club of Jacksonville, Fla., United States Army National Guard and the National Kidney Foundation of Georgia.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 8, at 2 p.m. at Brinson Hill Baptist Church in Wadley with Rev. John Hermon officiating and Rev. Herman Baker, Bishop Antonio Pringle and Rev. Marquis Johnson assisting. Interment was in the First Baptist Church Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Michelle Mack Jones; daughters, Qiana Vatrice Jones and Monecia Ariana Jones; granddaughter, Key-Asia Jones; mother, Cora Hill, all of Wadley; brothers, Darrell (Tiffany) Jones of Atlanta, and Greg Whigham of Wadley; mother-in-law, Anna Bell Lodge of Wadley; father-in-law, Jeffrey (Mildred) Mack of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; maternal grandparents, Henry and Mary Allen of Wadley; grandmother-in-law, Ora Mae Heggs Lodge and Annie Laura (Mose) Scott of Wadley; one brother-in-law, two sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mr. Randolph Hicks
Mr. Randolph Hicks entered into rest on Monday, Sept. 10, 2007, in Wadley.

His funeral was held on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 2 p.m. at Jones Chapel C.M.E. Church of Bartow with Rev. Darryl Jackson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Valena Tarver Hicks, Wadley; four daughters, Mae Willie (Harold) Jackson, Sandersville, Geraldine Alexander, Jacksonville, Fla., Ella Brown, Wadley and Wylene (Dale) Davis, Charleston, S.C.; one son, Ennis (Vickie) Brown, Augusta; a sister, Annie Hicks, Macon; two brothers, Lucious Hicks, Wadley, and Veleen Hicks, Tallahassee, Fla.; his mother-in-law, Ella Mae Washington, Bartow; seven sisters-in-law, four brothers-in-law, 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers were Jamaal Hart, Christopher Clark, Christopher Parker, Charles Sanford, Harold Jackson, Michael Jackson, William Young and Ricky Hicks

Mrs. Clara McCloud
Mrs. Clara McCloud of Matthews died on Thursday Sept. 6, 2007, at her residence.

The funeral will be held Sept. 12 at 3 p.m. at Thompson Springhill AME Church, Matthews with Rev. Robert Edwards and Rev. Charlie Myrick officiating.

Burial will be the Thompson Springhill AME church cemetery.

Survivors include eight children, Eyvone McCloud, Michael (Joyce) McCloud, Dea. Dennis (Varnell) McCloud, Sr., Lee (Jackie) McCloud, Janice McCloud, Barbara (Walker) Allen, Leon Allen and Lois Allen; three sisters, Mattie (Emanuel) Whitfield, Margie Rogers and Levon (Hugh) Richins; brother, Allen (Mary) Patterson; 18 grandchildren and aunt, Estelle Lockhart.

Mrs. Susie Bell Josey Neely
Mrs. Susie Bell Josey Neely died on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2007, in Augusta.

A Memorial Service was held on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 11 a.m. at Jones Chapel C.M.E. Church in Bartow with Rev. Daryl Jackson, Rev. J. C. Green and Pastor Bernice Jamison Turner officiating.

Survivors include her husband, Nathan Neely, Bartow; one sister, Katerina Washington, Hempstead, N.Y.; one brother, Charles Josey, Augusta; stepmother, Liza Josey, Louisville; one sister-in-law and a host of other relatives and friends.

Hudson Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Jewell F. Smith
Mrs. Jewell F. Smith, 88, of Louisville died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2007.

Mrs. Smith, a native of Jefferson County, was the daughter of the late Amos and Willie Smith Forehand. She was a retired dental assistant.

She was a member of Louisville First Baptist Church and the Fedilis Sunday school class. She is preceded in death by husband Hoke Y. Smith; son-in-law, Donald “Don” F. Palmer Sr.; and a grandson, Roger Wayne Mathis Jr.

The funeral was Sept. 8 at 2 p.m. at Louisville First Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Montgomery officiating.

Burial was in the Louisville City Cemetery.

Survivors include two daughters, Judy Smith Palmer, Thomson, and Martha (Wayne) Mathis; three grandchildren; six great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter.

Memorials may be made to the Louisville First Baptist Church or to Trinity Hospice.

Taylor Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Jermaine Cooper
Mr. Jermaine Cooper, 34, of Hephzibah, died Sept. 8, 2007 at his residence.

Mr. Cooper was a native of Jefferson County and had lived in Richmond County several years.

He was a member of St. Matthew AME Church and a member of the Benevolent Society and a 1992 graduate of Louisville High School.

He was a truck driver at Carswell Speedway LLC.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 15, at St. Matthew AME Church in Louisville, with Rev. James Days officiating and Rev. Abraham Gibbons assisting.

Interment was at the Louisville Society Cemetery.

Survivors include his father, Leroy Cooper Jr. and step-mother, Christine Cooper, both of Louisville; sisters Surina Cooper and Sharon Cooper and step-sister, Evonne (Verdee) Cunningham, all of Louisville; niece, Shironda Cooper of Lithonia; nephew, Deuntavious Cooper of Louisville; maternal grandmother, Freddie Bell Bennett, and paternal grandmother, Clara Cooper, both of Louisville; special aunts, Shellie Ray of Hephzibah, and Jeannie Broomfield of Louisville; aunts, Eva Lowery, Jeanell Outler, Dorothy Bennett, Brenda Corley, Mattie Miller and Jeanette (Freddrick) Mack, all of Louisville, Pauline Bennett of Beaufort, S.C., and Sylvia Bennett of Augusta; uncles, John Bennett Jr. of West Palm Beach, Fla., Jeffery Bennett, Adam Cooper, Robert (Patricia) Cooper, George Cooper, Willie (Gladys) Cooper, all of Louisville, James (Dessie) Cooper of Hephzibah, and Albert (Ursula) Bennett of Lawrenceville; great-aunt, Thelma (Johnny) Cooper of Vidette; great-uncles, William (Sapp) Walker and Robert Patterson of Louisville, and Roger (Eloise) Bennett of Hephzibah; cousins, other relatives and friends.

Honorary pallbearers were Stewards and Trustees of St. Mathew AME Church, Washington County Correctional Institute, Milledgeville YDC and Louisville High School class of 1992.

Active pallbearers were Timothy Cooper, Anthony Walker, Kortney Broomfield, Cardaris Broomfield, Kendrick Cooper, Bernard Bennett, Calvin Kelly and Jerome Thompson.

Garrer Funeral Home of Louisville was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Henry Lee Oliphant
Mr. Henry Lee Oliphant, of Augusta, entered into rest Saturday, Sept. 8, 2007, at the Medical College of Georgia.

He was a native of Jefferson County and a member of Lofton A.M.E. Church. He was formerly employed at Thermal Ceramics.

Funeral service was held Saturday, Sept. 15, at 2 p.m. at Lofton A.M.E. Church, Wrens, with Rev. Michael Ephraim, Sr. officiating.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include one daughter, Addie (Ronald) Bush, Augusta; three sons, James Anthony Oliphant, Sandy Mitchell (Cassandra) Oliphant, Augusta, Walter Allen (Fredericka) Oliphant, Marion, Ind.; two stepsons, Bernie (Liz) Oliphant, Freddie Acree, Augusta; stepdaughter, Georgia Gordon, Ariz.; three sisters, Gertrude (Robert) Little, Tilesa Hobbs, Carolina (Herbert) Berry, Wrens; six brothers, Rashad Oliphant, Jacksonville, Fla., James (Carrie) Oliphant, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Newt (Martha) Oliphant, Robert Hobbs, Wayne Hobbs, Wrens, Andrew (Carnell) Hobbs, Atlanta; aunt, Gertrude (Joe) Kelsey, Augusta; uncle, Maude (Clara) Little, Wrens; a host of grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Mr. James “Buddy” Rooks
Mr. James “Buddy” Rooks, 82, of Augusta died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2007, at the VA Medical Center.

Mr. Rooks was a member of American Legion Post 63 and was on the SRP Credit Union Board.

He served as a deacon for many years at Fleming Baptist Church and was a current member of First Baptist Church of Augusta.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Lamar Rooks; his mother, Pauline O. Faglier Rooks; a brother, John Owens Rooks; and sister, Joyce Dixon.

Graveside services were Sept. 5 at noon at Hillcrest Memorial Park with Dr. Jacob Malone officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Rooks; daughters, Donna Lynne Gatch, Elaine Rooks and Carol Rooks Perara; brothers, Etheridge Lamar Rooks and Lloyd Rooks; sisters, Willadean Kuykendall, Virginia Stanfield, Jimmie Clark, Sonya Usry and Shelby Harden; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home, 1101 15th St., Augusta, GA 30901.

Platt’s Funeral Home, Augusta, was in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Lizzie Whitehead Johnson
Mrs. Lizzie Whitehead Johnson, 77, wife of the late Floyd Johnson entered into rest Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2007, at her residence.

Mrs. Whitehead was a native of Glascock County and lived there all her life.

She attended the Mitchell Full Gospel Church and worked at Stapleton Garment Company and the Glascock School lunchroom.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Gibson Church of God with Rev. Jacky Downs and Rev. Steve Lamb officiating.

Interment was in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Whitehead is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Peebles of Gibson; two sons, Larry Johnson of Springfield, Mass. and Gary Johnson of Gibson; five grandchildren, Steven Johnson of Gibson, Rhonda Johnson, Emily Johnson, Jason Johnson and Steven Johnson, all of Springfield; four great-grandchildren, Gabrille Peebles, Richard Johnson, Kyle Johnson and Jesseca Johnson; and three sisters, Masie Haywood of Mitchell, Edith Hayes of Blythe and Helen Brooks of Gibson.

Pallbearers were Troy Bales, Ricky Sammons, Josh Whitehead, Allen Johnson, Ricky Cooper and Jimmy Haywood.

Memorials may be made to the Glascock County Concerned Citizens, in care of Mrs. Corene Chalker, 3037 Bastonville Rd., Gibson, GA 30810.
