Bernice Allen Thompson
Mrs. Bernice Allen Thompson, 82, of Wrens died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007.

Mrs. Thompson was a member of Wrens Baptist Church where she was a member of the Fidelis Sunday school class. She was a member of the Keenagers and was retired as a supervisor at Stapleton Garment Company.

The funeral was Sept. 7 at 11 a.m. at James Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Julian West officiating. Burial was in the Wrens Memorial Cemetery.

Survivors include two sons, Burney F. (Gale) Thompson, Wrens, and David M. Thompson Jr., Wrens; a daughter, Kaye T. (Steve) Strum, North Augusta, SC; and five grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Brad Thompson, Brent Thompson, David Mercer Thompson III, John Tippett, Carlton Allen and Melvin Evans.

Memorials may be made to Wrens Baptist Church, P.O. Box 217, Wrens, GA 30833.

James Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements

Leona Demons
Mrs. Leona Demons of Atlanta died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2007.

The funeral was Sept. 7 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Atlanta. Burial was Sept. 8 at Woodlawn Baptist Church cemetery in Cox.

Survivors include her children; her sister, Jacqueline Spells, Louisville; her nephew, Alton (Sherry) Spells, Louisville; and several other relatives.

Gus Thornhill Funeral Home, College Park, was in charge of the arrangements.

Albert V. Anderson Sr
Mr. Albert V. Anderson Sr., 84, of Augusta died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2007.

Mr. Anderson was the son of the late Authur Vance and Gladys Burch Anderson.

He retired from Famous Home builders as a lifelong carpenter.

He served his country in the U.S. Army during WW II.

He was a lifelong member of Southside Baptist Church where he had been a deacon, Sunday school teacher and a trustee.

He is preceded in death by his wife Johnnie Walden Anderson.

The funeral was Aug. 28 at 4 p.m. at the chapel of Chance & Hydrick Funeral Directors with the Rev. Bob Matthews and Dr. Jim King officiating.

Burial with military honors will follow in Westover Memorial Park.

Survivors include his sons, Albert V. (Vance) Anderson Jr., Augusta, and Gary Allen Anderson, Graniteville; daughters, Ann Anderson, Atlanta, and Patricia Wood, Gibson; a sister, Margaret Dawson, Hephzibah; nine grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Brian Richards, Robert Richards, Mike Newman, Brandon Anderson, Clint Anderson and Alvin Anderson.

Honorary pallbearer was Brent Richards.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2623 Washington Road, F- 104, Augusta, GA 30904.

Chance & Hydrick Funeral Directors, Augusta, was in charge of the arrangements.

Cleveland W. Bethune
Mr. Cleveland W. Bethune, 74, of Evans died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2007.

Mr. Bethune, a native of Augusta, was the son of the late Ruby O’Tyson Bethune Ray and the late Wade Hampton Bethune.

He served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict.

He worked for 50 years and became a partner in the businesses Hart Electric Supply Co., Hart Lighting Center, LBS Supply and Lanier and Bethune Enterprises.

He also served as a mentor and employee of Sentinel Probation and was a realtor for Blanchard and Calhoun Real Estate.

He was a deacon and former Sunday school teacher.

He was a member of Parkway Baptist Church.

He was a Mason, a member of the American Legion, Realtors Association, the USS Haynesworth Naval Association and the Gideons. He was preceded in death by his brother Wade Hampton Bethune Jr.

The funeral was Sept. 4 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son with the Rev. Robert Rayner officiating.

Burial was in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy King Bethune; one son, Carl (Charlotte) Bethune, Evans; one daughter, Brenda (Earl) Adkisson, Kennesaw; a brother, Raymond (Earnestine) Bethune, Stockbridge; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Pallbearers were Jack Thomas, Barry Norton, Randy Allen, Robert Harn, Alan Oswald and Jimmy Reeder.

Honorary pallbearers were deacons of Parkway Baptist Church and Frank Lanier, William Wilcher, Vernon Hargrove, Langdon Adkins, Cole Cooper, Stanley Crouch, Bill Cawley, Aubrey Clark, Louie Gantt, Marion Reese, Bill Shield, Doug Reese, Herb Moxley, Ralph Herndon and David Hueguenin.

Memorials may be made to Trinity Hospice, 2260 Wrightsboro Road, Augusta, GA 30909, or to Jefferson County Dade Kelley Teacher Scholarship Program, c/o Pat Goodwin, 1001 Peachtree St., Louisville, GA 30434.

Bob W. Daniel
Mr. Bob W. Daniel of Roswell died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2007.

A memorial service will be held Sept. 15 at 2 p.m. at Grace Methodist Church, 458 Ponce de Leon Ave. NE, Atlanta.

A second memorial service will be held in Louisville at a later date.

Survivors include his wife, Amanda; his brother, Bobby G. Daniel Sr., Louisville; and several nieces and nephews.

Beulah Hood
Mrs. Beulah Hood, 86, of North Augusta, SC, died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2007.

Mrs. Hood, a native of Glascock County, was the daughter of the late Luther and Bashie Thigpen.

The funeral was Sept. 2 at 3 p.m. at Old Bethel Church in Bartow with the Rev. Bill Thigpen officiating.

Burial was in Waldens Methodist Church cemetery in Avera.

She is preceded in death by two sons, Frankie and Eddie “Tolie” Hood; three brothers, Frank Thigpen, Bud Thigpen and Billy Thigpen; and one sister, Emma Newsome.

Survivors include three sons, James and Bea Hood, Mesquite, Texas, Jerry and Mila Hood, Dallas, Texas, and Larry and Pat Hood, Dearborn Heights, Mich.; two daughters, Irene Mullins, Sulphur, La., and Dianne and David Bullard, North Augusta, SC; daughter-in-law, Ellen Hood, Thomson; two brothers, Ray Thigpen, and Harold Thigpen, Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Derek Neal, Cheyenne Mullins, Doug Mullins, Keith Babineaux, David Bullard Jr., Chris Bullard and Bill McGlorhorn.

Honorary pallbearers were Leroy Coxwell and David Wilcher.

Curtis Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Henry B. Jones
Mr. Henry B. Jones, 67, of Wrens died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2007.

Mr. Jones, a lifelong resident of Jefferson County, graduated from Wrens High School in 1957.

He graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1962 where he was a member of the ATO Fraternity.

Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, becoming a sergeant during his six year tenure from which he attributed learning the skills necessary for success.

Employed by M.B. Jones Oil Company, Inc. and founder of Town and Country Gas, Inc. for the past 40 years, Mr. Jones served as president of both businesses as well as vice president of Sprint Food Stores, Inc.

He served on the board of directors of First State Bank for 30 years where he was chairman of the board from 1995 to 2003.

He also served on the board of directors for both Stapleton Academy and Thomas Jefferson Academy.

He attended the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in Wrens.

He is preceded in death by his parents Moses Brinson Jones and Ruth Mathis Jones.

The funeral was Aug. 31 at 10 a.m. at James Funeral Home with the Rev. Gary Jones and Dr. James M. Ford officiating.

Burial was in Wrens Memorial Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Elaine Anderson Jones; a son, Anderson Brinson Jones and his wife, Rosanne, Augusta; two grandchildren, Olivia Rose Monjeau and Anderson Woodard Jones; a sister, Carole Jones Smith and husband, Ed of Statesboro; a brother, John Judson Jones and wife Nikki of Wrens; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Jerry D. Dowdy, James E. Fleming, Hugh R. Fleming, James L. Gay, Joseph E. Gore, T.W. Johnson, W.T. Lamb, R.G. Rabun, Mac Reeves, Ottis G. Stephens and Brian Whitaker. All are directors of First State Bank.

Honorary pallbearers were the employees of M.B. Jones Oil Company, Inc., Ogeechee Oil Company, Inc. and Town and Country Gas, Inc.

Memorials may be made to Wrens ARP Church, 404 King St., Wrens, GA 30833, or to Georgia Sheriff’s Youth Homes, Inc., P.O. Box 1000, Stockbridge, GA 30281.

Roger Wayne Mathis Jr.
Mr. Roger Wayne Mathis Jr., 36, of Louisville died Monday, Sept. 3, 2007.

Mr. Mathis was a member of Providence Baptist Church.

He was a truck driver for Howard Sheppard.

The funeral was Sept. 5 at 11 a.m. at Providence Baptist Church with the Revs. Danny Hedgepath and Bill Smith officiating.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Sandy P. Mathis; a daughter, Kinslee Cleo Mathis; a son, Remington Lee Mathis; parents, Wayne and Martha Mathis; a sister, Kim (Terrell) McMillan; maternal grandmother, Jewell Smith; brother-in-law and friend, Jeff (Melissa) Partridge.

Pallbearers were Charles Lawson, Algie Snider, Steve Sipper, Reggie Morgan, Daniel Snider and Darin Rowland.

Honorary pallbearers were Dr. John Blumer, Dr. Chris Sheppard, Dr. Donald Loebl, Mitchell McGraw, Dana Blocker and Carl Wagster.

James Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

George Otis Oliphant
Mr. George Otis Oliphant of Wrens died Friday, Aug. 24, 2007, at the VA Medical Hospital.

The funeral was Aug. 31 at 2 p.m. at Lofton AME Church with the Rev. M.G. Ephraim Sr. and the Rev. Mark Pierson, eulogist.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include two daughters, Melody (Alexander) Cook, Martinez, and Sequoya Z. Benefield, Wrens; one son, Roddrick Oliphant, Augusta; three sisters, Evelyn (Reuben) Walker, Dorothy O. Davis, both of Augusta, and Margaret (John) Thompson, Newark, NJ; three aunts, Gertrude (Joe) Kelsey, Augusta, Willie Bell Warren, Daytona, Fla., and Essie B. Oliphant, Philadelphia, Pa.; one sister- in-law, Lutrell Oliphant, Wrens; four grandchildren and several other relatives.

Freeman Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
