Solomon Morris
Mr. Solomon Morris, 75, of Harlem died Monday, Feb. 12, 2007, at Heritage of Old Capitol Nursing Home.
Mr. Morris, a native of Columbia County, was a retired mail carrier with the United States Post Office.
He was an Army veteran and a member of Norris Chapel Holiness Church.
The funeral was Feb. 15 at 2 p.m. at Norris Chapel Holiness Church with the Rev. Jimmy Richardson officiating.
Burial was in Bellevue Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include his wife, Rachel Barkwell; three daughters, Patricia Jones, Grovetown, Joann Maddox, Harlem, and Glynda Jones, Gibson; two sons, Martin Morris Sr., Augusta, and David Morris, Harlem; one sister, Betty Campbell, Harlem; one stepdaughter, Christian Whitaker, Harlem; two stepsons, Laurence Arrant, NY, and James Arrant, Neb.; eight grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren.

James Preston “Jimmy” Hight
Mr. James Preston “Jimmy” Hight, 61, of Greensboro died Friday, Feb. 16, 2007, at Minnie G. Boswell Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Hight was a native of Baldwin County. Descending from one of Georgia’s first families who arrived with Oglethorpe, founding the colony of Georgia, he was the son of the late James Preston Hight Sr. and Edith Pierce Alfriend Hight of Sparta.
He was a graduate of Sparta High School and the University of Georgia with a BS in English.
He taught at Newton County High School in Covington, Nathaniel Greene Academy in Siloam and Thomas Jefferson Academy in Louisville.
He served in the Georgia National Guard.
He was the organist for the First Presbyterian Churches in Greensboro and Sparta.
He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Greensboro.
Graveside services were held Feb. 18 at 3 p.m. at Sparta City cemetery with the Rev. D. Geoffrey Taylor officiating.
Survivors include his adopted family, James and Bonnie Hanks, Athens, Edwin and Katie Hanks, Jefferson, Jane Ellen and Julie Hanks, Athens, Joel McRay, Union Point, Cheryl and Keith Eley, Siloam, Bud Kennedy, Union Point, and Judy Hodnett, White Plains; his cousins, Camille Bailey, Union Point, Paula Bailey, Union Point, Neal Bailey, Fla., Walter Bailey, SC, Jim Alfriend Thomson, and Nell Butler, Atlanta.
Pallbearers were Ford G’Segner, Steve McCommons, Phil Robinson, Fred Webster, Sam Hollis, Louis Rozier, Franklin Hitchcock, William Myers, Edwin Hanks, John Copelan, Keith Eley, Algie Jones, Chuck Wimberly, Travis Rivers and Albert Brown.

Willie Oscar Jackson
Mr. Willie Oscar Jackson of Bartow died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2007.
The funeral was Feb. 19 at 2 p.m. at Salters Grove Baptist Church with Pastor Walter Holmes officiating.
Burial was in the Jones Chapel Cemetery.
Survivors include his longtime friend and companion, Lillie Mae Floyd, Bartow; four daughters, Marie (James) Jackson, Bartow, Rena (Dennis) Hicks, Riverdale, Eloise Gibbons, Augusta, and Melissa (Chester) Stone, Wrens; six sons, Willie (Sandy) Floyd and Tyrone (Lisa) Gaynor, Augusta, Gary (Linda) Floyd, Timmy (Carolyn) Floyd, Randy Floyd and Steven Floyd, all of Bartow; six sisters, Idella Knight, Bartow, Marion Kelly, Wadley, Bobbie Lucille Howard, Joann Boyd and Mary Bell Warthen, Canton, Ohio, and Willie Alice Campbell, Massillon, Ohio; one brother, Willie James Smith, Jacksonville, Fla.; 34 grandchildren and many other relatives.

Benny Curry
Mrs. Benny Curry, 95, of Louisville died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2007, at Jefferson Hospital.
Mrs. Curry was a native of Jones County but lived in Philadelphia most of her life before relocating to Jefferson County several years ago. She was a retired seamstress and a member of Ebenezer CME Church.
The funeral will be Feb. 15 at 11 a.m. at Ebenezer CME Church and cemetery in Bartow.
Survivors include her children, John “Paul” Curry, Louisville, Vera Simmons, Detroit, and Blummer Curry, Philadelphia, Pa.; sister, Willie Mae King, Louisville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Cleo "Ma" Blair Dawson
Mrs. Cleo "Ma" Blair Dawson of Avera died Saturday, Feb.3, 2007, at University Hospital.
Mrs. Dawson, a native of Avera, was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church where she has served on the Ushers Board and the Senior Choir and was the Church Mother. She is preceded in death by two children, Larry Polen and Mary Lue Brown.
The funeral was Feb. 8 at 2 p.m. at Gethsemane Baptist Church with the Rev. Carlos M. Newton Sr. officiating.
Survivors include two daughters, Ollie Ree (Mitchell) Roberts, and Mattie Bell Blair; one son, Lester Dawson; three sisters, Lola (Arthur) Roberts, Hazel Brown, and Eddie Daniels.

Arthur Bernard Evans
Mr. Arthur Bernard Evans of New York died Monday, Feb. 5, 2007.
Mr. Evans was a native of Augusta and a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.
The funeral was Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. at the Macedonia Baptist Church with Dr. Gregory M. Fuller officiating. Burial was in Walker Memorial Park.
Survivors include three sisters, Mary (Billy) Butts, Louisville, Lilly Lawrence, Augusta, and Lizzie (John) Blanton, Amityville, NY; two brothers, John (Shirley) Evans, Donald (Shirley) Evans, and Ralph Evans, Augusta; and several other relatives.

Christine J. Jones
Mrs. Christine J. Jones of Augusta died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007, at Medical College of Georgia.
Mrs. Jones was a native of Jefferson County. She worked as an environmental service tech at the Medical College of Georgia and Ft. Gordon.
The funeral was Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. at Greater Young Zion Willie Frank Hampton officiating.
Burial was in South View.

Helen Screws Morrison
Ms. Helen Screws Morrison, 80, of Graniteville, SC, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2007.
Mrs. Morrison, a native of Wadley, has been a resident of Aiken County for over 55 years. She was a retired lab technician with Graniteville Company. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
She is preceded in death by her husband Willie Hugh Morrison.
She is the daughter of the late Robert L. Screws and Esther Watkins Screws.
The funeral was Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Napier Funeral Home with the Revs. James Young and Donnie Delk officiating.
Burial was in the Graniteville Cemetery.
Survivors include two sons, Bobby Morrison, Graniteville; three brothers, Kenneth (Naomi) Screws, Wade (Tammy) Screws, all of Graniteville, and Otis (Edgelle) Screws, Waynesboro; two sisters, Louise Miller, Aiken, and Mary Lois Davis, Savannah; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Mildred A. Wilburn
Mrs. Mildred A. Wilburn of Zelienople, Pa., formerly of Wrens, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2007, at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Cranberry Township, Pa.
Mrs. Wilburn was a member of Wrens Baptist Church and formerly active in church affairs. She worked as secretary of both Wrens High School and Wrens Elementary School for a number of years.
She had also been a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She was preceded in death by her husband Whitner A. Wilburn; and one brother, Dr. Bertram P. Avera Jr.
A memorial service will be held March 3 at Wrens Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Carlton E. Allen and the Rev. Martin T. Young officiating.
The family will receive friends at a luncheon immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall.
Survivors include a daughter, Anne W. Young, and son-in-law, Rev. Martin T. Young, Slippery Rock, Pa.; one granddaughter, Michelle A. Young, Winchester, Va.; and one grandson, Mark A. Young, Sunbury, Pa.

Danny Charles Bennett
Mr. Danny Charles Bennett, 57, of Gibson died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2007, at the V.A. Hospital in Augusta.
Mr. Bennett served his country in the Vietnam War in 1969-1970. He was decorated by many medals and badges including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service and Campaign Medals, two Overseas Bars Army Commendation Mdl, Combat Infantry Badge, Expert (Rifle M-16), Expert (81 MM Mortar), and a W/60 DVC.
After military service he became a United States Marshall.
Later he opened the Dan Bennett Realty Company in Aiken, SC, until his retirement in 2004.
Graveside services were Feb. 4 at 2 p.m. at the Mitchell Baptist Church Cemetery.
Olin Mathis gave the eulogy.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Kent Bennett; his mother, Freddie Bennett, Eastman; one son, Benjamin Bennett, Eastman; one daughter, Carmen Cook, Brunswick; two sisters, Lynn Thomas and Nancy Bennett, both of Eastman; two brothers, Larry Bennett and Randy Bennett, both of Eastman; and one grandson.
Pallbearers were Tom Kent, Bill Kent, Jimmie Pennington, Randy Bennett, Earl Thomas and Stephen Whigham.

Mr. James D. Burnett
Mr. James D. Burnett of Augusta died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007, at the Medical College of Georgia.
Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.
Survivors include one son, Rico Burnett, Augusta; one daughter, Ykeshia Heggs, Augusta; mother, Mildred Burnett, Augusta; two sisters, Katherine B. Young, Augusta, and Janice Thomas, S.C., two brothers, Bernard Fuller, Larry Fuller, Wrens; devoted friend, Pearl Heggs, Augusta; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Thomas F. “Red” Hayes
Mr. Thomas F. “Red” Hayes, 61, of Wrens died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2007.
Mr. Hayes was a lifelong resident of Wrens and retired from E-Z-Go Textron after nearly 40 years of service. He was a member of Wrens United Methodist Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Ross Jackson and Myrtle Skinner Hayes, and a brother, Loren “Gabby” Hayes.
The funeral was Feb. 5 at 2 p.m. at Wrens United Methodist Church with Dr. Ben Martin, Rev. Griffin Thompson and Rev. Roy White officiating.
Burial was in the Gibson City Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Faye Walden Hayes; daughter, Pamela Joyce Hayes, Augusta; mother-in-law, Ruby Brooks Walden, Wrens; two sisters, Betty Parish and Evelyn McGahee, both of Wrens; one brother, William “Billy” Hayes, Jacksonville, Fla.; many nieces and nephews and a special family of friends that include “adopted” daughter, Stacey Lynn Irby, Bennett, Gail and Clete Clark, Brian Shana, Abby and Mallie Sims and Fay and Brenda Hadden.
