John Hyman Guy Sr.
Mr. John Hyman Guy Sr., 64, of Wadley died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007, at University Hospital in Augusta.

Mr. Guy, a native of Glascock County, had lived in Wadley for the past 43 years. He was a retired construction manager with Fulghum Industries for 40 years and a member of the Wadley Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, John H. “Johnny” Guy Jr.

The funeral was Jan. 5 at 2 p.m. in the Wadley Baptist Church with the Revs Herman Walden and Thurman Walden officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria Guy; two sons, Paul Frank Guy, Newington, and Ira Jonathon (Tabatha) Guy, Wadley; daughter, Melinda Guy (George Jr.) Sims, Wadley; four sisters, Clara Holinbaugh, Joshua, Texas, Iris Kelly, Hephzibah, Sally Toalston, Clebourn, Texas, and Lucille Walden, Augusta; five grandchildren and great-grandchild.

Smith Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Bernice R. Jackson Howard
Mrs. Bernice R. Jackson Howard of Wadley died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007.

The funeral was Jan. 7 at 2 p.m. at San Clair Baptist Church with the Rev. Frank Roberts officiating and Pastor Derwin Jackson assisting. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include two daughters, Erma H. (Samuel) Jones, Wadley, and Wilhelmina Howard, Detroit, Mich.; two sons, Clarence (Gladys) Howard Jr., Clinton Township, Mich., and Eddie Frank Howard, Dearborn, Mich.; four sisters, Sylvia, Gooden, Tallahassee, Fla., Barbara Royal and Zelma Mosley, Alexandra, Va., and Helen Tom, Hyattville, Md.; one brother, Willie Steve (Mattie) Jackson, Baldwin, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Willie Telfair, Henry Hudson, Johnny Gooden, Ulysses Price, Roy Jackson and David Gooden.

Hudson Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements.

Harold Stone
Mr. Harold Stone, 51, of Stapleton died Friday, Dec. 29, 2006, in Riverdale.

The funeral was Jan. 6 at noon at New Hope AME Church in Grange.

Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his mother, Martha McCall Tremble, Miami, Fla.; daughter,

Shelonica Stone; three brothers, Milton Tremble, Andrew Stone and Isaiah Stone Jr.; six sisters, Janice Gayles, Jacqueline Tremble, Vernoica Johnson, Angela Dixon, Melanie Stone and Bernestine Jackson.

Gardenview Funeral Chapel, Athens, was in charge of the arrangements.

Olin M. Blackstone Sr.
Mr. Olin M. Blackstone Sr., 82, of Waynesboro died Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006, at the VA Medical Center in Augusta. Mr. Blackstone, a native of Richmond County, was a retired spotwelder from Thermo-King Corp., a former dairy worker, a WWII Army veteran and a member of Rosemont Heights Baptist Church.

The funeral was Dec. 30 at 1:30 p.m. at Rosemont Heights Baptist Church with the Revs. Keith Alderman and Earl Saxon officiating. Burial was in Burke Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include his wife, Myrtle Lee Herndon Blackstone; five children, Barbara Lariscy, Olin Blackstone Jr., Cynthia Blackstone, all of Waynesboro, James (Carol) Blackstone, Hephzibah, and Jennifer (Dana) VanCise, Augusta; one sister, Donnie Bell Bolton, Gibson; three brothers, Clifford Blackstone, San Antonio, Tx., Lloyd Blackstone, Gibson, and Francis Blackstone, Crete, Ill.; two grandsons; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Joe Lariscy, Carl Anderson Jr., Larry Herndon, Arlon Herndon, Rusty Eskew and Mike Chance.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the Bill Stephens Sunday School Class at Rosemont Heights Baptist Church.

Memorials may be made to the Rosemont Heights Baptist Church Vision Fund, 710 Stone Ave., Waynesboro, GA 30830.

Edward Boehs
Mr. Edward Boehs, 59, of Wrens died Friday, Dec. 29, 2006, at Medical College of Georgia Hospital in Augusta.

Mr. Boehs, a native of Major County, Okla., was a retired dairy farmer. He was a member of Pinecrest Church of God in Christ Mennonite.

The funeral was Jan. 2 at 10:30 a.m. at Pinecrest Mennonite Church with Ministers Maynard Peters, Verle Giesbrecht and Randall Goossen officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Boehs; a son, Chester Boehs, Wrens; four daughters, Lynette (Michael) Loewen, Walnut Hill, Fla., Rachel (Kenyon) Nightingale, Lenland, Miss., Marie (James) Leatherman, Rich Hill, Mo., and Carrie Boehs, Wrens; four grandchildren; four brothers; and two sisters.

Pallbearers were nephews.

Memorials may be made to Pinecrest Mennonite Church Memorial Fund, c/o Franklin Dyck, 6523 Hwy. 296, Stapleton, GA 30823.

Dan K. Chalker
Dr. Dan K. Chalker, 62, of Augusta died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2006.Dr. Chalker was a dermatologist and graduate of Medical College of Georgia where he completed his internship.

He served his country in the U.S. Air Force Medical Corps during the Vietnam War.

He returned to his profession as a resident of Dermatology at the Medical College of Georgia.

The most noted of his numerous academic appointments was his position as clinical professor of the Department of Dermatology at Medical College of Georgia.

His most noted awards and honors were as president-elect of Demosthenian Literary Society (Fall, 1965) and chairman of the American Academy of Dermatology Summer Session in Boston, Mass.

He was an elected member of Augusta Dermatology Society, a member of American Medical Association, Richmond County Medical Society, Georgia Society of Dermatologic Surgeons, Inc., American Society of Dermatology and a founding member of the Space Dermatology Association.

He was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd, the Augusta Country Club and the Augusta Assembly.

He is the son of the late Elvin H. Chalker and Mildred Kent Chalker.

A memorial service was held Jan. 3 at 11 a.m. in Summerville cemetery with The Very Rev. Robert Fain and The Rev. Dr. J. Andrew Menger officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Calhoun Chalker; one son, William Calhoun Chalker, Augusta; and one brother, Kendell Wayne (Audrey) Chalker, Mitchell.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2623 Washington Rd., Suite 104, Augusta, GA 30904, or St. Joseph Hospice, 2260 Wrightsboro Rd., Augusta, GA 30904.

Helen Elizabeth Hadden
Miss Helen Elizabeth Hadden, 79, of Lexington, Ky., died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2006, at Samaritan Hospital in Lexington.

Miss Hadden, a native of Gibson, was the daughter of the late E. Hobart Hadden and Ruby Thompson Hadden Serre.

The funeral was Dec. 30 at 1 p.m. at Elliott Sons Telfair Street Chapel. Burial was in Westover Memorial Park.

Survivors include two brothers, John (Frankie) Hadden, LaGrange, and Thomas Hadden, Salt Lake City, Utah; one sister, Ollie (Percy) Wanner, Augusta; two aunts, Dahlia Hadden, Stapleton, and Evelyn (Ray) Smith, St. George, Utah; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Wesley Village, 1125 Lexington Road, Wilmore, KY 40390.

Elliott Sons Telfair Street Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.

Elease C. Briggs
Mrs. Elease C. Briggs of Augusta died Monday, Dec. 25, 2006.

The funeral was Dec. 30 at noon at Palmer Grove Baptist Church. Burial was in Bellevue Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia B. (Floyd) Blount, Sharon B. (Carl) Tyrell; four sons, Dea. Joseph (Pearl) Cummings Sr., Robert (Jacqueline) Briggs Jr., Dea. Earnest (Rev. Janie Sue) Briggs, Dea. Leon (Beverly) Briggs, Sr., all of Augusta; one sister, Alavan Seabrook, Miami, Fla.; five brothers, George Cummings, Miami, Dea. Robert (Alberta) Cummings, Miami, Willie Louis Cummings, Louisville, Willie Lee (Martha) Seabrook, Mibamer, Fla., Min. Johnny (Rosalyn) Seabrook, Tampa; 21 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two aunts.

Peoples Funeral Home, Augusta, was in charge of the arrangements.

Godowns
Godowns of Cope, SC, died Friday, Dec. 29, at the Orangeburg Nursing Home.

Mr. Godowns, a native of Orangeburg County, was the son of Mrs. Aubrey Clark Godowns and the late Thomas D. Godowns.

He was the grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. C.J. Godowns of Stellaville Community.

He was a retired professional fishing guide and dock master in Key Largo, Fla.

He was a member of Union United Methodist Church.

A memorial service was held Dec. 31 at Union United Methodist Church in Cope with the Rev. Fred McDaniel officiating.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include two brothers, Eddie (Susannah) Godowns, Savannah, and Dickie (Georgette) Godowns, Cope; a sister, Sarah G. Drews, Irmo; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Union United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 56, Cope, SC 29038.

Nancy Norton Wren
Mrs. Nancy Norton Wren, 73, of Wrens died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006, at Jefferson Hospital.

Mrs. Wren was the daughter of the late Floyd L. Norton and Thelma Black Norton. She was a member of Wrens United Methodist Church. She worked and retired from Floyd L. Norton Lumber Company as a bookkeeper. She is preceded in death by two brothers, David Norton and Richard Norton; and one sister, Frances Norton.

The funeral was Jan. 3 at 2 p.m. at James Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Roy White and Harlon Noles officiating. Burial was in Wrens Memorial Cemetery.

Survivors include three sisters, Gloria N. Craft, Wrens, Dorothy L. Norton, Lyuchbury, Va., and Jane N. Jones, Wrens; three brothers, Ben W. Norton, Smyrna, Sidney W. Norton and Spence C. Norton, Wrens; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were James Paul, Tanny Zeigler, Glenn Bartell, Billy Weatherford, Bob Swan, Hugh Fleming and Leroy Lewis.

Florintino Hernandez
Mr. Florintino Hernandez, 53, of Wadley died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2006.

Mr. Hernandez was born in Mexico and was employed by Battle Lumber Company.

A memorial service was held Dec. 1 at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Smith Funeral Home with Father Ambrosio Bruce officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Andrea Martinez, Mexico; children, Maria Gudalupe and Citlally Janet Hernandez, both of Mexico; a brother, Isadore (Maria) Hernandez-Martin, Wadley; a sister, Paiola Hernandez, Houston, Texas.

Smith Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Ralph Junior Kennedy
Mr. Ralph Junior Kennedy, 79, of Wadley died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2006, at Jefferson Hospital.

Mr. Kennedy, a native of Morehaven, Fla., had lived here since 1964. He was owner/operator of Wadley Café and Hotel for 17 years, and the first Jefferson County Commissioner for District 1 after the change from three to five districts. He was a veteran of World War II and retired from the United States Navy after 20 years of service. He is preceded in death by a brother, Julius Kennedy and two sisters, Thelma Register and Eleanor Johnson.

Graveside services, with military honors, were Dec. 30 at 3 p.m. in the Wadley cemetery with Dr. Larry Sauls officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Kennedy; a daughter, Lynn K. (Bruce) Sammons, Martinez; six brothers, Earl Kennedy, Orlando, Fla., Eddie Kennedy, McRae, David Kennedy, Thomasville, Wayne Kennedy, Ashburn, Jackie Kennedy, Lennox, and Johnny Kennedy, Sylvester; two grandchildren and two great-grandsons.

Memorials may be made to the U.S. Navy Foundation, P.O. Box 96570, Washington, DC 20077-7685.
