Mr. William H. Haywood
Mr. William H. Haywood, 69, of Gibson entered in to rest on Thursday, July 24, 2008, at Medical College Georgia, Augusta.

Williams was a native of Richmond County but lived in Glascock County most of his life. He was a Baptist, a retired fireman and an Army Veteran. He was the son of the late Mr. Willie and Mrs. Ivylyn Reese Haywood.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 27, 2008, at the funeral home chapel with Rev. William Daniel officiating. Interment will be at Fellowship Baptist Church Cemetery, Gibson.

Survivors include two daughters, Samantha H. (David) Tompkins of Gibson, and Jennifer (Jared) Sheley of Sandersville; one sister, Mrs. Karen (James) Sutton of Stapleton; one nephew, Robert J. (Angie) Sutton of Stapleton; and one niece, Lisa (James) Kitchens of Avera; five grandchildren.

Pallbearers were James Kitchens, Robert Sutton, Scott Usry, Gary Usry, Brady Brassell and Lloyd Brassell.

Sheppard Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Mary Claire Neal Smith
Mrs. Mary Claire Neal Smith of Athens entered into rest on Wednesday, July 23, 2008.

Mrs. Smith was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Jefferson Neal Jr. of Thomson and the granddaughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Jefferson Neal Sr. and the late Mr. and Mrs. Farriel Williamson of Louisville. Born on Feb. 14, 1983, she was a life long resident of Thomson, and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Thomson where she participated in both the Youth Fellowship and Pathway Choir. A 2001 honor graduate of Thomson High School, Mrs. Smith was a varsity cheerleader, a member of Beta Club, Fellowship of Christian Students, French Club, Debate Team, newspaper staff and the homecoming court her senior year. Having lettered in softball, soccer and golf at THS, she was selected as the recipient of the Mac Bowman Scholar Athlete Award her senior year and was also selected as a senior adopter. She was presented in the Fall of 2003 at the Augusta Symphony Guild Cotillion. She graduated in December of 2007 from the University of Georgia with a degree in sociology. While at UGA, Mary Claire was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. She was employed by Baker and Taylor, Inc. in Commerce.

Graveside services were at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 26, 2008, in Westview cemetery with Rev. Tom A. Kerr and Rev. David G. Bowen officiating.

Survivors include her husband, Rodney Shane Smith; her children, Maggie Smith, Austin Smith and Colt Smith of Commerce; one sister Sara Neal Lokey (Cameron) of Augusta; aunts and uncles, Nan and Billy Tam and Carrie and Linton Neal of Thomson; one great aunt, Ivalee Meadows of Atlanta; and a number of cousins.

If so desired, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mrs. Anne Farmer
Anne Farmer of Austin, Texas entered into rest on Thursday, July 24, 2008.

Funeral services will be held at James Funeral Chapel in Wrens at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2008 with Stan Littleton officiating. Burial will follow at Ways Baptist Church cemetery in Stellaville.

Mrs. Farmer was born the second of three children on Aug. 4, 1926 in Augusta. She grew up on the Parish farm just outside of Wrens next to Brushy Creek. She graduated from Wrens High School and attended Limestone College in South Carolina, earning a bachelor of arts degree in music and English.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Farmer.

Survivors include her sons, John Farmer, Carey Farmer and Mark Farmer.

Family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Friday August 1, 2008.

Mrs. Ida S. Stevens
Mrs. Ida S. Stevens, 89, of Wadley died Tuesday, July 22, 2008, at Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.

Mrs. Stevens was born in Jefferson County and had lived here all her life. She was retired from Thermo King in Louisville and a member of the Moxley United Methodist Church.

Graveside services were Friday, July 25, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the Moxley Cemetery, with Reverend Ruth Lovejoy officiating.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph A. Stevens; a son, Wayne Stevens; a grandson, Randy Stevens; and her parents, Walter and Rosa Screws.

Survivors include a daughter, Donna McNeely of Wadley; a son, Danny (Ruth) Stevens of Wadley; eight grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were grandsons.

Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Gertrude J. Swan
Mrs. Gertrude J. Swan of Wrens entered into rest Sunday, July 20, 2008, at the Medical College of Georgia.

Mrs. Gertrude Swan was a member of the Keysville United Methodist Church.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 22, 2008, at Wrens Memorial cemetery with Rev. Stan Littleton and Rev. Ed Chance officiating.

Survivors include her son, Clayton Johnson; her daughter, Gail Clark; sister, Martha Anderson; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Charles Wilson Wright
Mr. Charles Wilson Wright, 81, of Augusta entered into rest on Saturday, July 19, 2008, at Blair House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Mr. Wright was born and lived his early years in Augusta. During his adult life, he was a resident of Washington, D.C. Mr. Wright retired from Washington General Hospital after many years of dedicated service.

Graveside funeral services were held Tuesday, July 22, 2008, at noon, at Mt. Olive Memorial Garden Cemetery, with Rev. Willie Aaron Roberts officiating.

Preceding him in death were his mother, Alma B. Wright, and his uncle, Larry Burney.

Survivors include his aunt, Lillie M. Johnson, Wrens; four cousins, Juanita L. Burney, Augusta, Larry D. Burney, Forsyth, Ruben Burney, Atlanta, and Janet L. Burney, Riverdale; and friends, Mr. and Mrs. Simon Cain, Washington, D.C.

Mrs. Linda Claxton
Mrs. Linda Claxton, 63, of Wadley died Wednesday, July 30, 2008.

Mrs. Claxton was born in Jefferson County and was a lifelong resident. She had been an accountant with Fulghum Industries in Wadley and was a member of the Moxley Baptist Church.

Graveside services were Saturday, Aug. 2 at 11 a.m. at Moxley cemetery with Reverend Tom Harrison and Reverend Ruth Lovejoy officiating.

Pallbearers were Billy Raines, Donnie Raines, Alan May, Mitch Smith, Brad Smith and Jay Smith.

Survivors include two sons, Brooks Gardner Banks of Atlanta, William Hall Banks of Greenville, N.C.; a daughter, Lynda Lea Goodbread of Brunswick; a sister, Ann Smith of Bartow; and five grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Moxley cemetery Fund or the M.S. Foundation in memory of Mrs. Claxton.

Mrs. Betty J. Herrin
Mrs. Betty J. Herrin, 77, of Grovetown entered into rest on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2008, at Heritage of Old Capital Inn Nursing Home, Louisville.

Ms. Herrin, daughter of the late Ruth Wasden-Horne and the late Joe Wasden, was a native of Jefferson County. She was a member of Grove First Baptist Church and was retired from Fort Gordon as a Civil Service Employee with 30 years service.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 5 at 4 p.m. at Grove First Baptist Church, Grovetown, with the Reverend Frank Thigpen officiating. Interment was in the Bellevue Memorial Gardens, Grovetown.

Survivors include three brothers, Jack (Peggy) Wasden, Sandersville, Wayne (Jackie) Wasden, Grovetown, and Terry (Charlene) Wasden, Evans; nieces, Lisa Wasden, Sandersville, Donna (Harold) Smith, Evans, Toni (Bart) O’Quinn, Augusta, Traci Wasden, Augusta; nephews Barry Wasden Sandersville, Wayne (Susan) Wasden Jr., Appling, and Steven Wasden, Grovetown; and several great-nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Harold Smith Jr., Charles Milburn, Namon Woods, Ron Fairburn, Ed Strickland and E.R. Hughes.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grove First Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 236, Grovetown, GA 30813.

Mr. Charles W. Johnson Sr.
Mr. Charles W. Johnson Sr., 88, of Wrens entered into rest Thursday, July 31, 2008, at Jefferson Hospital.

Mr. Johnson was a retired farmer and served in WWII. He was decorated with the American Theater Ribbon, the European African Middle Eastern Ribbon with four bronze stars, the Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Medal-WWII, and the Bronze Star Medal. He was the son of the late Samuel and Beatrice Johnson.

Graveside services were held Tuesday, Aug. 5 at 10 a.m. at Ways Baptist Church Cemetery, Stellaville, with the Rev. Ed Chance officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth B. Johnson; his son, Charles W. Johnson Jr.; and a sister, Barbara J. Moore.

Mr. Price Reville
Mr. Price Reville, 83, of Gibson entered into rest Thursday, July 31, 2008, at University Hospital.

Mr. Reville was a field service manager with Yancey Brothers and was a member of Bethel UMC. He was the son of the late Samuel and Anna Reville.

Graveside services were held Saturday, Aug. 2 at 10 a.m. at Bethel UMC Cemetery, with Rev. Boyd Reeves and Rev. Sam Collins officiating.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Jeanette Reville; two daughters, Nancy Gunter (Wayne) and Lynn Jackson (Chuck); seven grandchildren, Angela Jackson, Heather Jackson, Tyler Jackson, Chase Jackson, Mason Gunter, Grace Gunter and Audra Gunter; and one great-granddaughter, Mikayla.

Mr. James E. Rooks Jr.
Mr. James E. Rooks Jr., 73, of Greenville, S.C. entered into rest Wednesday, July 30, 2008.

Mr. Rooks was the husband of 47 years to Carole Rooks, son of the late James E. Rooks Sr. and Inez Hadden Rooks. Mr. Rooks was retired from Southeastern Freightlines after 36 years of service as OSD clerk.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 2 at 11 a.m. at James Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jody Boulineau officiating. Burial followed at Walden UMC Cemetery.

Mr. Rooks was preceded in death by his brother, Malcolm Rooks, and sister, Jacquelyn Rooks Chalker.

Survivors include his children, James Robert “Robby” Rooks of Avera, and Sherry Rooks Patterson, Savannah; a brother, Everrett Rooks, Lexington, S.C.; a sister, Ivelyn Newton, Laverne, Calif.; and grandchildren, Farrell Kirk Patterson, Cameron Todd Patterson, Haley Alexis Patterson, David Martin Lane III, and Sierra Elizabeth Rooks.

Pallbearers were Allen Rooks, Joey Rooks, Billy Evans, Rick Hopper, Eric Hadden and Kirk Patterson.

Mr. Vincent Byron Shaffer
Mr. Vincent Byron Shaffer, 65, of Kennesaw entered into rest on Friday, Aug. 1, 2008, at St. Joseph Hospital after a short battle with lung cancer.

Mr. Shaffer had a 50-year career serving the Metro Atlanta area in the emergency medical service field as a paramedic and instructor. He served on Composite State Board of Georgia for 15 years, instructor of State of Georgia for over 30 years and served on numerous boards and committees for EMS and dedicated his life to serving others.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 5 at 2 p.m. at Burnt Hickory Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Stephens, Rev. Mike Bryant and Rev. Greg Pocok officiating.

Graveside services were held at noon on Wednesday, Aug. 6, in the Louisville City Cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Annie Ruth Townsend.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia “Pat” Shaffer of Kennesaw; daughter, Allyson Shaffer of Decatur, and Ivy Murphy of Dallas; sons, Jason (Tonya) Poole of Dallas, and Robyn (Rose) Shaffer of Korea; four grandchildren, Morgan and Mason Poole and Jayric Miles and Karrasie Murphy.

Donations may be made to the Saint Joseph’s Hospital Center of Cancer Care and Research, 5665 Dunwoody Road, Atlanta, GA 30342.
