Mrs. Nerisa Durden
Mrs. Nerisa Durden of Avera died Friday, Aug. 15, 2008.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2008, at Magnolia Baptist Church in Avera.

Garrer Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. James Clarke Harden
Mr. James Clarke Harden, 73, of Statesboro died Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, at his residence.

The Jefferson County native was a 1952 graduate of Avera High School. Mr. Harden resided in Wrens for many years before moving to Statesboro in 1974 due to a transfer with Kaiser Chemical Company.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Vivian Sheppard Harden.

Funeral services were Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, at 3 p.m. at the Waldens United Methodist Church in Wrens. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Mary S. Harden of Statesboro; a sister, Dianne (Gary) Rhodes of Wrens; a niece, Renae Usry of Stapleton; and a nephew, Randy Rhodes of Wrens.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Safe Haven Domestic Violence Shelter, P.O. Box 2494, Statesboro, GA 30459

Mrs. Rebecca Marsh Tooke Johnson
Mrs. Rebecca Marsh Tooke Johnson formerly of Devereux passed away Thursday, Aug.14, 2008, at her home.

Mrs. Johnson was born on April 5, 1919, in Gibson. She was a member of the Devereux Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, in Williams Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Ralph Kitchens officiating. Interment followed at 3 p.m. at the Providence Baptist Church cemetery in Grange.

She was predeceased by husbands, William Vernon Tooke Sr. and Herbert Johnson.

Survivors include her children, William Vernon Tooke Jr. (Mary) of Sandersville, Joann Tooke Curry (Russell) of Gray, David “Sonny” Tooke (Teri) of Lake Sinclair; seven grandchildren, Vickie (Tom) Odom of Ovido, Fla., Lisa (Marty) Mack, Tammy (Doug) Durrett, Jamie (Michael) Beeland, Kristi (Kenny) McCrimmon, all of Gray, Brian (Beth) Tooke of Eatonton, Jay (Leslie) Tooke of Bethlehem; 14 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Tom (Maggie) Marsh of Hephzibah; several nieces and nephews.

Williams Funeral Home and Crematory were in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Odis Kelley
Funeral services for Mr. Odis Kelley, 78, of Wrens were held on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, at 2 p.m. at New Zion Baptist Church, with Pastor Rev. Dr. Willie Jones officiating. Interment was in New Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.

Freeman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Marion "Dunk" Kirkendohl
Mr. Marion ‘Dunk’ Kirkendohl, 77, of Hephzibah entered into rest Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, at his residence.

Mr. Kirkendohl, a native of Stapleton, was the son of the late Sidney J. and Ollie Lee Newsome Kirkendohl. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a tugboat captain for 54 years, currently with Savannah Marine Services.

A memorial service was held at the Chapel of Chance and Hydrick Funeral Directors on Monday, Aug. 18, at 4 p.m.

Preceding him in death was his wife, Helen Lowe Kirkendohl.

Survivors include his daughters, Connie (Steve) Renew of Appling, Lynne (Ken) Simpson of Appling and Gail Pilkinton of Hephzibah; brothers, Charlie Kirkendohl, Sam Kirkendohl, Billy Kirkendohl, and Sidney Kirkendohl; a sister, Dot Martin; grandchildren, Jennifer (Kevin) Watkins, Jessica (Bennie) Bussey, Kevin (Ashley) Whitener and Laura Pilkinton; great grandchildren, Amelia Whitener, Sadler Watkins and Bryson Bussey.

Chance and Hydrick Funeral Directors were in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Gwinnette Dixon Lewis
Mrs. Gwinnette Dixon Lewis, 69, of Wrens entered into rest Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008, at her residence.

Mrs. Lewis, a native and lifelong resident of Jefferson County, was the daughter of the late Mr. L.R. Dixon Sr. and Ada Rhodes Dixon. She was a homemaker and a member of Praising Him Ministries Church.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 15, at the Praising Him Ministries Church, Wrens, with Revs. Charles Price and Richard Stavely officiating. Burial followed in the Wrens Memorial Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband of 49 years, G.I. Lewis of Wrens; one daughter, Kelli Lewis (Clint) Waller of Thomson; one son, Lee Lewis, of Stapleton; five grandchildren, William Issac Lewis, Gilbert Lewis Jr. Justin Waller, Olivia Waller, and Sydney Waller; one sister, Ivelyn D. Gibson, of Weatherford, Texas; three brothers, L.R. Dixon Jr. of Dawsonville, James Dixon of Augusta and Robert Dixon of North Augusta, S.C.

Pallbearers were Stephen Curry, Chris Dixon, Michael Dixon, Greg Lewis, Walker Lewis Jr. and Ike Lewis.

If so desired, memorials may be made to the Praising Him Ministries Church Building Fund, C/O Mrs. Helen Stavely 1480 Highway 88 Wrens, GA 30833.

Lowe Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Charles Wiley Logue
Mr. Charles Wiley Logue passed away Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008.

He was a lifelong resident of Baldwin County. He was the son of the late John Sidney Logue Sr. and Lena Smallwood Logue. He was a retired mechanic.

Survivors include his sons, Scott Logue of York, S.C., Stephen Logue of Newborn, and Michael Logue of Gibson; sisters, Jo Bouchillion of Conyers, and Carolyn Lang of Lake City, Fla.; brother, John Sidney Logue Jr. of Milledgeville; and six grandchildren, Megan, Kathryn, Charleigh, Ella, John and Ethan Logue.

In lieu of flowers the family requests expressions of sympathy to the American National Kidney Foundation.

Mr. Hollis Mason
Mr. Hollis Mason of Bartow entered into rest on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2008, in Wrightsville.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Aug. 14, at 10 a.m. at Hudson Mortuary Chapel in Wadley. Burial was in the Mason Family cemetery in Kite.

Survivors include his mother, Louise Mason, Bartow; and sister, Paula Pace, Miramar, Fla.

Hudson Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Beverly Law Palmer
Mrs. Beverly Law Palmer, 57, of Wrens entered into rest Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 21, at Wrens Baptist Church, with Dr. Julian West and Rev. Danny Hedgepeth and Julia Wells officiating. Burial will follow at Wrens Memorial Cemetery.

Family will receive friends Wednesday, Aug. 20, from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Palmer was a member of Wrens Baptist Church. She was a retired teacher of 35 years where she taught 30 years at Wrens Elementary and 5 years at Wrens Middle School.

Mrs. Palmer was preceded in death by her father, Calvin Hardin Law.

Survivors include her husband Mickey Palmer; her children, Michael Kevin Palmer, Kristina Elizabeth Palmer and Cory Randall Palmer; her mother, Myrtis Hughelene Law; three brothers, Don Law, Gerry Law and Randy Law; and four grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Benji Law, Greg Law, Chris Law, Brian Law, Adam Howard, Thomas Palmer, George Samples, Billy Lewis, Jimmy Fleming and William Wren.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Jefferson County Teachers.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lakeview Baptist Church P.O. Box 3281 Oxford, Al. 36203 or to Jefferson County Board of Education Dade Kelly Teacher Scholarship Attn: Pat Goodwin 1001 Peachtree St. Louisville, Ga. 30434.

Mrs. Marian Templeton Story
Mrs. Marian Templeton Story, 88, died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008, in Tallahassee, Fla.

A native of Burke County, she moved to Tallahassee in 2005 from her home in Steinhatchee, Fla. She and her husband, William Radford Story, who passed away in 1976, operated Rad’s Restaurant and Motel in Thomson for many years. She was a member of the Steinhatchee United Methodist Church and a former member of the First United Methodist Church of Thomson.

Graveside services were at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 14., at Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens, Thomson.

Survivors include her son, Glenn Carter (Donna) of St. Marks, Fla.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, FL 32308.

Mrs. Inez Usry Rabun
Mrs. Inez Usry Rabun, 82, of Gibson entered into rest Sunday, Aug. 10, 2008, at University Hospital, Augusta.

Mrs. Inez was a native of Glascock County and lived there all of her life. She was a homemaker.

The funeral was held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008, at the Gibson United Methodist Church with Rev. John Jenkins and Rev. David Sisler officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. John L. and Mrs. Annie Blankenship Usry; and her husband, Mr. William G. “W.G.” Rabun.

Survivors include a daughter, Denise (Keith) Wall of Thomson; two sons, Darrell “Rusty” (Connie) Rabun of Thomson, and Glenn (Diann) Rabun of Gibson; one sister, Mrs. Edna Newsome of Gibson; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Ross Rabun, Shane Rabun, Kevin Mitchell, Brian Pritchett, Jason Hoover, Jimmy Newsome, Darrell Usry and J.L. Chalker.

Memorials may be made to the Glascock County Concerned Citizens in care of Mrs. Corene Chalker, 3037 Bastonville Rd., Gibson, Ga., 30810.

Mrs. Annie Laurie Hillman Swann
Mrs. Annie Laurie Hillman Swann, 81, of Augusta entered into rest on Monday, Aug. 11, 2008, at Kentwood Nursing Facility.

Born in Jefferson County to the late Floyd B. and Mollie Cato Hillman, she had been a resident of Augusta for most of her life and was a graduate of Tubman High School for Girls. She was the widow of Walter E. “Duck” Swann. She had retired from the Veterans Administration Medical Center after 33 years of service. A member of St. James United Methodist Church, Beckum Bible Class, she taught Sunday school in the Children’s Department for many years. During her life she was also active in the Augusta Association for the Developmentally Disabled, and served on the Board of Directors for Lynndale School and Training Center and the Advisory Council of Mental Health.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the Thomas Poteet Chapel with Rev. Linda Birchall officiating. Interment followed at Westover Memorial Park.

Survivors include her three sons, Richard E. Swann (Dr. Lee Ann), Stanley “Stan” Swann, and Robert B. “Bob” Swann; two brothers, Beauford I. Hillman and Preston B. Hillman (Mary); one sister, Janie “Peggy” Hillman Evans; three grandsons, Richard Caldwell Swann (Dr. Whitney), Russell Swann and Ryan Swann; and great-grandchildren, Thomas Price Swann and Sarah Lawton Swann.

Pallbearers were her nephews, John Hillman, P. Bart Hillman, Floyd Hillman, Steve Mayfield, William Mayfield, David Mayfield and Bert Nalley.

Honorary pallbearers were the members of the Beckum Bible Class.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Special Olympics Georgia Augusta Stars, 2706 Smith Creek Road, Augusta, GA 30909.

Mrs. Dezella Jackson Cooper
Mrs. Dezella Jackson Cooper entered into rest on Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2008.

Funeral services were conducted on Monday, Aug. 25, at 1 p.m. at Friendly Church of God and Christ with Elder Leroy James officiating. Interment was in Old Bethel Baptist Church cemetery in Bartow.

Survivors include four daughters, Lettie (John) Jackson, Mattie Bell Cooper, Rosa Ann Cooper, and Rejania Cooper, all of Hephzibah; one son, Tommy Cooper, Augusta; one sister, Sallie Mae Johnson, Wadley; three grandsons; one great-grandson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
