Mr. John Durham McTier
Mr. John Durham McTier, 91, of Stapleton died Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, at McDuffie Regional Medical Center.

Mr. McTier was a native of Warren County, but had lived in Stapleton for many years. He retired from Thomson Company, and he was a member of Mt. Beulah Baptist Church where he was a deacon.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, in the Mt. Beulah Baptist Church with Rev. Roy Frierson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mr. McTier was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Alma Milburn McTier.

Survivors include his daughter, Sandra (Charles) McTier Rabun, Thomson; his son, Mansel (Jerry) McTier, Thomson; his sister, Chloe Purvis, Stapleton; five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Troy McTier, Tripp McTier, Joshua McTier, Chad Rabun, Vann Phillips and Michael Drawdy.

Honorary pallbearers were the deacons of Mt. Beulah Baptist Church.

Curtis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. James O. Sheppard
Mr. James O. Sheppard, 76, of Beech Island, S.C. entered into rest on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, at his home.

Born in Jefferson County, he had lived in Augusta, prior to moving to Beech Island, S.C. 39 years ago. He retired from Kimberly Clark where he was a lead operator after 27 years of service. A Korean War Veteran, he served his country in the United States Navy.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Augusta First Church of the Nazarene with pastors David Roland, Thom Harvey and Charles Horne officiating. Interment followed in Westview Cemetery, Augusta.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ollie Owen and Eunice Wilson Sheppard.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Daphne Livingston Sheppard; daughters, Mary Patricia Schmitz (Archie), Beech Island, S.C. and Beverly Moore (Fred), Beech Island, S.C.; brother, Julian Sheppard, Evans; grandchildren, Mary Robin Conner, Knoxville, Tenn., and Jason Philip Powell, Aiken, S.C.; and great-grandchildren, Mary Lauren Conner, Aimee Noelle Conner, Kyrston Powell, Alexis Powell, Philip Powell and Allyson Patricia Conner.

Pallbearers were Jason Philip Powell, Robert Wayne Conner, Joseph Morris, Cliff Bridges, Fred Moore and Archie Schmitz.

Memorials may be made to Liberty Hospice, 610 Aldrich St., NE, Aiken, S.C. 29801.

Mr. Samuel "Buck" Stone
Mr. Samuel “Buck” Stone of Benton Harbor, Mich. entered into rest on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008, after a brief illness.

Mrs. Stone was born in Jefferson County in Louisville on Sept. 18, 1937, to the late Jenning S. Stone Sr. and Vinnie Fann-Stone. He was a member of St. Matthew AME Church.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, at Hover Funeral Home in Buchanan, Mich.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Stone; sisters, Catherine Washington and Louise Stone Jordan; brothers, Jenning S. Stone Jr. and Edgar Lee Stone (Doris); daughter, Cassandra Lynn Stone; sisters-in-law, Annie Canigen (Tidus), Dorothy White (Johnny), Florine Patterson (Alvin), Malale Milligan (Joe); brother-in-law, Jerry Weaver; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Garrer Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Arthur B. Taylor II
Mr. Arthur B. Taylor II, 73, of Thomson entered into rest Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008.

Mr. Taylor was born in Warren County and was the son of the late Arthur B. Taylor, Sr. and the late Fannie Sue Giles Taylor. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict, worked as a supervisor at Concord Industries for 10 years and worked as a mechanic for Gray Citgo in Warrenton. Mr. Taylor was a member of Norwood United Methodist Church.

Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 8, 2008, at the Beggs Funeral Home Chapel with Tommy Harwell officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Josette Taylor, Thomson; son, John Thomas Taylor (Susie Kilpatrick), Thomson; daughters, Lynn McKinney (Gary), Harlem, and Lenna Renee Sellers (Ron), Gibson; sister, Nellie Smith, Norwood; seven grandchildren, Damien Taylor, Angel Taylor, Cody Kotlan, Sandra Michelle Kotlan, Tiffany and Jonathan McKinney and Sydney Sellers.

Memorials may be made to Heartland Hospice, 1365 Interstate Parkway Augusta, GA 30909.

Mrs. Mary Walker
Mrs. Mary Walker, 74, of Augusta entered into rest Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, at her residence.

She was a native of Old Ellenton, S.C.; a retiree of St. Joseph Hospital after 12 years of service.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at 10 a.m. at Runs Missionary Baptist Church, Beech Island, S.C., with Rev. Dewayne Mack officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Horace Walker Sr., Augusta; three daughters, Shirley (Ralph) Godbee, Elaine Walker and Diane Walker, all of Augusta; three sons, Horace (Gloria) Walker Jr., Wrens, Carl (Lucy) Walker, North Augusta, S.C., and Rev. Anthony Walker, Augusta; one sister, Mae Colia Griffin, Brooklyn, N.Y.; three brothers, Joshua Washington, Booker T. Washington and Willie Washington, all of Aiken, S.C.; 11 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Williams Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Barbara Jean "Van" Walker Whitaker
Mrs. Barbara Jean “Van” Walker Whitaker, 60, of Morrisville, Pa. entered into rest at her home on Friday, Aug. 29, 2008.

Mrs. Whitaker, a native of Jefferson County, was the daughter of the late Lensey and Clemmie Brown Walker. She was a member of the Spring Bethel AME Church, and a graduate of the Louisville High School in 1967. She was employed by Johnson & Johnson and Americorp until her health failed.

Funeral services were Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at 2 p.m. at the Spring Bethel AME Church with the Rev. James Jenkins, Pastor Dorothy Nelson, Elder Bessie Nelson and Rev. Minnie Davis officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her son, Michael Whitaker; and brothers, Lensey Walker and Willie Walker Sr.

Survivors include her husband of 41 years, James Whitaker IV; son, James Whitaker V; two daughters, Stephanie (Dwayne) Taylor and Vanessa Whitaker, all of Morrisville, Pa.; stepdaughter, Sheri Kelly, New York; two sisters, Mattie Hodges, Wrens, and Agnes Jones, St. Petersburg, Fla.; two brothers, St. John Walker and Scipp Walker, Wrens; mother-in-law, Annie Willie Whitaker, Trenton, N.J.; 18 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; aunts, Mattie Turner, Wrens, and Rachel Banks, Trenton, N.J.; sisters-in-law, Elder Bessie Nelson, Pastor Dorothy (Albert) Nelson, Wrens, Mary Ann Walker and Linda Whitaker, Trenton, N.J.; one brother-in-law, Willie Robert Whitaker, Trenton, N.J.; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mr. Hubert Williams
Mr. Hubert Williams entered into rest on Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, in Wadley.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Hudson Mortuary Chapel in Wadley. Burial was in the Hard Shell Cemetery.

Survivors include his daughter, Diane (Willie) Gamble, Louisville; two sisters, Minnie L. (Porter) Davis and Nelloise (Willie) Heard, Trenton, N.J.; one granddaughter and a host of other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Eliza Mae Prescott Arrington
Mrs. Eliza Mae Prescott Arrington, 98, of Springfield entered into rest on Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008, at Effingham County Hospital. She was a native of Jefferson County and lived in Chatham County most of her life and then resided at Effingham Extended Care Facility in her later years.

Graveside Services were held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 12, 2008, at Mt. Moriah United Methodist Church cemetery in Matthews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, R. Cusell Arrington; her son, Jack Arrington; three brothers; and a sister.

Survivors include a brother, Floyd Arrington (Loree); her children, Verna Arrington, Martha Arnold (Dwight), Edna Arrington Pearce (Chuck), Romie Arrington (Mary); a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

James Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Joel Wrestley Daniel
Mr. Joel Wrestley Daniel, 55, of Augusta entered into rest Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008, at his residence.

Mr. Daniel was born in Louisville. He was a welder and a member of Crestview Baptist Church.

Graveside funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, at 11 a.m. in the Stapleton Baptist Church Cemetery, Stapleton, with Rev. Jimmy Sanders officiating.

Survivors include his daughter, Tracy Daniel of Augusta; mother, Inez Williams Daniel of Augusta; brother, Jack Daniel of Augusta; and one grandchild Keaton Daniel.

Chance and Hydrick Funeral Directors were in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Willie James Henderson
Mr. Willie James Henderson of Wrens entered into rest on Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008, at Glendale Nursing Home, Wadley.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, at noon at Georgia Grove Baptist Church, Tennille, with Elder Jessie Mountain officiating.

M.C. Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lorene Newsome Kelley
Mrs. Lorene Newsome Kelley, 105, of Atlanta entered into rest on Friday, Sept. 5, 2008.

She was born March 26, 1903 in Mitchell, Glascock County, to Laura Jane and Marcus L. Newsome. She attended Wrens High School and Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, before marrying Roy Orestes Kelley also of Mitchell in 1922. She and her husband lived in Mitchell and later Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. and Midville. They operated food processing factories, cotton gins and warehouses. After his death, she lived in Midville where she was in the Methodist Church. A gardener, she was a member of several garden clubs and was a nationally accredited flower show judge. She traveled continuing her horticultural education, instructing others and judging flower shows. She later moved to Swainsboro, and then to Atlanta in 2001.

The body was cremated and will be interred in the Midville Cemetery. Plans will be announced.

She was predeceased by her husband; a daughter, Bebe Kelley Minter; a son, Ralph Newsome Kelley; and a grandson, Richard Kelley Minter; five sisters, four brothers and several nieces and nephews.

Survivors include her daughter, Pal (Bob) Garner of Atlanta; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Midville Methodist Church, 169 Kilpatrick Street, Midville, GA 30441.

Cremation Society of the South is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Isaiah "Nick" Lockhart Jr.
Mr. Isaiah “Nick” Lockhart Jr., 42, of Waynesboro entered into rest on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, after a motorcycle accident.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008, at 1 p.m. at the Roberson Grove Baptist Church, Waynesboro. Interment will be in the Eden Baptist Church Cemetery, Louisville.

Mr. Lockhart was born in Richmond County on June 22, 1966, to the parentage of Isaiah Lockhart Sr. and Margaret Brady Lockhart. He lived in Burke County and joined the Eden Baptist Church, Louisville, at an early age. He was a 1985 graduate of Waynesboro High School and a self employed carpenter.

Survivors include his wife, Charlene Newkirt Lockhart of Waynesboro; his children, Cushena Jordan, Isaiah Lockhart III, Deontez Blackshire, Bianca Newkirt, Chardana Newkirt of Waynesboro, and Demetria Lockhart of Stone Mountain; his father, Isaiah Lockhart Sr. of Hephzibah; a sister, Michelle Lockhart of Hephzibah; a brother, Terry Tracy Lockhart of Ft. Riley, Kan.; his mother-in-law, Barbara Newkirt of Waynesboro; father-in-law, William T. Newkirt of Waynesboro; grandchildren, Davion Lyons and Kaleb Lyons of Stone Mountain; sister-in-law and brothers-in-law, Porshia Brown, Michael Brown and Harold Brown of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Carolyn Newkirt, Linda (Alvin) Wimberly, Corey Newkirt and Grant (Denise) Young of Waynesboro, William (Frankie) Newkirt Jr. of Girard; aunts and uncles, Rev. The viewing will be Friday, Sept. 19, 2008, from 4 to 6 p.m., and the wake from 6-7 p.m. at Phinazee and Son Funeral Home, Waynesboro.

Mrs. Patti Ann Myers Martin
Mrs. Patti Ann Myers Martin, 46, of Hephzibah entered into rest on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008.

Patti was a member of Berlin Baptist Church. Prior to her ill health, Patti was a student at Augusta State University.

The memorial service was conducted on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. She was cremated and burial will be a private service at a later date.

She was preceded in death by her father, Aaron Anderson; and mother-in-law, Mary Elizabeth Martin.

Survivors include her husband, Stanley Martin; her daughter, Brittany Elizabeth Martin; her son, Kyle Stephen Martin all of Hephzibah; her mother, Martha Usry of Gibson; brothers, Dennis Myers and Kenneth Myers; her father-in-law, Bobby Martin.
