Mr. Lamar Sheppard
Mr. Lamar Sheppard, 87, of Louisville entered into rest on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008.

He was born in Jefferson County, retired as a maintenance worker from Thermo King and was a member of Waldens United Methodist Church.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 13, 2008, at Waldens United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tom Edwards officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jeff and Fannie Sheppard; brothers, Cleon and Harold Sheppard and Clark Harden.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Elva Williams Sheppard, Louisville; four children, Joe (Grace) Sheppard, Wadley, Linda (Rick) Simmons, Hephzibah, Betsy (Donnie) Dunbar, Ponce Inlet, Fla., and Susan (Barry) Gray, Louisville; brother, Tag ( Lois) Sheppard; sisters, Marie Williams, Helen Thomas and Judy Tanner, all of Louisville, and Dianne (Gary) Rhodes, Wrens; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Tim Smith, Keith Hadden, David Cowan, Michael Travelstead, Hardy Gray and Jeff Tanner.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Waldens United Methodist Church, c/o Patricia Kitchens, 1304 Hadden Pond Road, Avera, GA 30803.

James Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. William Glenn Story
Mr. William Glenn Story Sr., 87, of Augusta entered into rest on Oct. 8, 2008, at Trinity Hospital.

Mr. Story was a native of Mitchell, and had resided in Augusta for the past 59 years. He was a WWII Army Veteran who served in the European Theatre and a retired welder/pipe fitter. Mr. Story was a member of the Gibson Masonic Lodge and a member of Bayvale Baptist Church, where he was a deacon emeritus.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet and Son with Rev. Charlie Deloach officiating. Interment followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Survivors include his wife, Martha B. Story; his sons, William G. Story Jr. of Augusta, Ray (Rhetta) Story of Martinez; daughter, June S. (Earl) Collins of Augusta; sisters, Johnnie Walden of Bartow, Malene Padgett of Avera, Frankie Johnson of Martinez, Vivian Braddock of Gibson, Joyce Smith of Hephzibah and Glenda Padgett of Avera; and grandchildren, Tyler Story and Jonah Story, both of Martinez.

Pallbearers were Keith Williford, Don Williford, Johnny Padgett Jr., Charles Padgett, Kim Kitchens and William Johnson.

Honorary pallbearers were Bayvale Baptist Church Deacons.

Memorials may be made to Bayvale Baptist Church, 2240 Bayvale Rd., Augusta, GA 30909.

Mr. Chester W. Williams
Mr. Chester W. Williams, 96, of Statesboro died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008, at the Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility.

The native of Jefferson County was a longtime resident of Statesboro. He attended Stapleton Elementary and graduated from Stapleton High School in Stapleton. He received a bachelors in education from Georgia Southern College on an athletic scholarship where he lettered in varsity basketball, football, track and the boxing team. He earned a masters of education degree from the University of Georgia. Mr. Williams served as principal of Metter High School for 10 years, principal of North Habersham High School in Clarkesville and principal of Reidsville High School. He served as athletic director, varsity coach, classroom teacher and principal of junior and senior high schools. He attended the Naval Officers’ School in Hollywood, Fla., was Recognition and Gunnery Officer on the U.S. General W. G. Haan and completed four years of Citizens’ Military Training in Charleston, S.C., was a Lieutenant in the US Naval Reserve and was also a member of the Statesboro National Guard from 1931-1933. Mr. Williams was a member of the First Baptist Church where he had served as a Sunday school teacher and department superintendent and deacon. He served as president of the Lions Club and the Kiwanis Club. He had previously served as chairman of the Heart Fund Drive, the March of Dimes Committee, Polio County Committee, PTA and the Band Boosters. He also was a member of the Silver Haired Legislature and had served as Speaker of the House for the group. Mr. Williams had been a member of Southern Boosters since 1982. He was Magistrate Judge of the Small Claims Court for four years.

The funeral service was held Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church. Burial was in Eastside Cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Akins Williams.

Survivors include his son, Roger Bron Williams of Statesboro; a numerous number of nieces and nephews and many friends.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Chester W. Williams Scholarship Fund, C/O Georgia Southern Boosters, P. O. Box 8115, Statesboro, GA 30460.

Hodges-Moore Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Johnny C. Allen
Mr. Johnny C. Allen of Warrenton entered into rest on Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008.

Funeral services were on Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008, at 3 p.m. at the Warren County Cultural Center, Warrenton. Interment was in Andrew Chapel Church Cemetery, Norwood, with Minister Steven Ivey officiating.

Survivors include wife, Yvonne Allen; five daughters, Mary Lou Jones, Mamie Ficklin, Carolyn Allen, Warrenton, and Paulette Parker, Gibson, and Tessie Allen, Thomson; one son, Timothy Lewis, Warrenton; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Naomie Griffin, Atlanta, and Charlene Hawkins, Warrenton; two brothers, Willie B. Allen, Atlanta, Percy Lee Allen, Warrenton; three aunts; one uncle; friend, Luveria Collins; other relatives and friends.

Dawson’s Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Maudie Lamb Black
Mrs. Maudie Lamb Black, 87, of Dearing entered into rest on Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008, at the Jefferson Hospital.

Mrs. Black was born on April 26, 1921, at Glascock County, and lived in Edgehill most of her life and moved to Dearing for the past five years. Mrs. Black was a homemaker.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008, at 1 p.m. at Jordon Chapel Church of God in Edgehill, with Rev. David Jones, and Deacon Charles Black officiating. Burial followed at Gibson Branch cemetery in Edgehill.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Thomas Black Sr.; and her parents, Robert and Gertrude Mathis Lamb.

Survivors include her children, Joseph T. Black Jr., George A. Black, Hilda Pelham, Helen Sapp, Melvis Gay and Lauren Black; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and her two friends, Brooke Gay and Neva Calhoun.

Pallbearers were Josh Morgan, Ronnie Pelham, Randy Pelham, Gordon Ross, Scott Lamb, Harold Lamb and Ralph Kelley.

James Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. James Cobb
Mr. James Cobb, 73, of Thomson entered into rest on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008, in the Golden Living Center, Augusta.

Mr. Cobb was a native of Glascock County. He was retired from the trucking industry and was an Army veteran.

Graveside services were at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008, in Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include his two daughters, Cindy Henry, Brentwood, Tenn., and Lisa Koren, Austell; his two grandchildren, Sam Henry and Jake Henry, both of Brentwood; six sisters, Jane Prevette and Willie Mae Allen, both of Thomson, Louise Glover, McDonough, Connie Shiver, Annette Kennedy and Elaine Henry, all of Augusta; his brother, Jack Cobb, Greensboro.

Curtis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Willie Lee Johnson
Mr. Willie Lee Johnson, 83, of Louisville entered into rest Monday, Oct. 13, 2008.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008, at Gordon Grove Baptist Church in Louisville.

Survivors include his wife, Essie Heggs Johnson; children, Cora Moore (Willie), Sandra Cudjoe (Brian), Allen Johnson (Deon), Leon Johnson (Virginia), Wilbert Roy Johnson (Lisa), Linda Johnson and Lela Gibbons; sister, Annie Ruth Holmes (Alex); 12 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren.

Garrer Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Peggy Wren Linnenkohl
Mrs. Peggy Wren Linnenkohl of Louisville entered into rest Friday, Oct. 17, 2008, at Heritage of Old Capital Nursing Home.

Mrs. Linnenkohl was a former member of Waldens United Methodist Church, Avera. She was a member of First Baptist Church of North Augusta. She was a Regent – Governor David Emannuel Chapter of the D.A.R. and a charter member of the John Franklin Wren Chapter of the D.A. R.

Funeral Services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008, at Elliott Sons Telfair Street Chapel with John David Durden officiating. Interment followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Annie Wren; and husband, J.W. Linnenkohl.

Survivors include a daughter, Dale (Rocky) Harris of Wadley; two grandchildren, John David (Jeana) Durden and Rebecca (Joe) Carreon; four great-grandchildren, David, Zoe, Evan and Mary Katherine; a sister, Frances W. Prescott of Louisville; a brother, W.B. (Nell) Wren Jr. of Louisville; sister-in-law, Jenelle Belk of Eatonton.

Elliott Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Brett Newsome
Mr. Brett Newsome, 43, of Gibson entered into rest on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008, in the Select Specialty Hospital.

Funeral services were at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008, in the Reedy Creek Baptist Church, with Rev. John Jenkins and Rev. M.C. Radford officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mr. Newsome was a native of McDuffie County, but had lived in Gibson for several years. He was employed with the Georgia State Highway Department and was a member of the Reedy Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Dianne Newsome, Gibson; his son, Christopher Newsome, Harlem; his parents, Lansin and Joanne Palmer Newsome, Stapleton; his sister, Mrs. Roxanne Daniel, Grovetown; and his brother, Mr. Chad Newsome, Mitchell.

Mrs. Lois "Granny" P. Arrington
Lois “Granny” P. Arrington, 100, of Guyton entered into rest on Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2008, at her residence.

Mrs. Arrington was born Dec. 22, 1907, to the late Marvin and Mamie Pennington near Wrens. She married Marcus Arrington, also from Wrens in 1924. They had four children. They later moved to Port Wentworth in 1943. They owned Arrington Groceries in Monteith for many years. She attended Living Faith Church of God in Guyton, formerly known as Garden City Church of God since 1946, until her health failed the past few months.

Funeral services were held at Thomas C. Strickland and Sons Funeral Home Effingham Chapel at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 17, 2008. Burial was in Effingham Memorial Gardens, Springfield.

Mrs. Arrington was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Marcus Arrington; her oldest son and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Mickey Arrington; daughter-in-law, Betty Arrington; a son-in-law, Leonard Butler; a grandson, Paul Arrington, all of Guyton; great-granddaughter, Shannon Arrington of New Jersey; four sisters, and two brothers.

Survivors include three children, Allen Arrington of Atlanta, Harold (Diane) Arrington, and Shirley A. Butler, all of Guyton; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Walter Pennington of Aiken, S.C.; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family members and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Living Faith Church of God, 3789 Noel C. Conaway Rd., Guyton, GA 31312 or Rincon Church of God, PO Box 273, Rincon, GA 31326.

Mr. Richard Carlos "Dick" Boatright
Funeral services for Mr. Richard Carlos ‘Dick’ Boatright, 81, of Lansdowne, Pa., formerly of Wrens, were held Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, at 1 p.m. at the Lofton AME Church, Wrens, with the Rev. M.E. Ephraim Sr. pastor, and presiding Elder H.E. Terrell, eulogist. Interment was in the Sugar Hill Cemetery.

Survivors include three daughters, Carolyn Boatright and Wanda Boatright both of Los Angeles, Calif., and Germania Boatright, Lansdowne, Pa.; one son, Joseph Boatright, Norristown, Pa.; one sister, Mary Alice Huff, Wrens; one brother, Roy Boatright, Augusta; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Freeman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Willie Lee "Doc" Johnson
Mr. Willie Lee “Doc” Johnson, 83, of Louisville entered into rest Monday, Oct. 13, 2008.

Mr. Johnson was born in Jefferson County for June 20, 1925, the youngest child of the late Dickerson and Mary Gibbons Johnson. Earlier in life he became a member of Gordon Grove Baptist Church and later became a deacon. He received his education from the Jefferson County Public School System and served in the United States Army. When he moved to Orange, N.J. he was affiliated with New Hope Baptist Church and served as a deacon.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008, at Gordon Grove Baptist Church in Louisville, with Rev. Allen Webb officiating and Rev. Walter Holmes Sr. presiding.

He was preceded in death by three siblings, Mazie Stephens, Charles Johnson and Robert Johnson.

Survivors include his wife, Essie Heggs Johnson of Louisville; children, Cora Moore (Willie) of Bainbridge, Sandra Cudjoe (Brian) of Frenchtown, N.J., Allen Johnson (Deon) of Lithonia, Leon Johnson (Virginia) of Winterville, N.C., Wilbert Roy Johnson (Lisa) of Denver, Colo., Linda Johnson and Lela Gibbons, both of Louisville; sister, Annie Ruth Holmes (Alex) of Bartow; aunts, Annie Jessie Atkins and Helen Gardner, both of Louisville; two brothers-in-law, Rev. Asa Heggs (Nan) of Roselle, N.J. and Tom Pete Heggs of Arlington, N.J.; 12 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mr. Clarence Donnie Kelley
Mr. Clarence Donnie Kelley, 60, of Rochester, N.Y. entered into rest on Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2008, at the Mt. Sinai Hospital, New York City.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, Oct. 31, 2008 at 1 p.m., with Rev. Willie B. Tomlin officiating at the Freeman Funeral Home Chapel. The family will gather at the funeral home at 12:50 p.m.

Survivors include his wife, Cheryl Eberhart Kelley, New York, N.Y.; two sons, Terrance Kelley, Rochester, N.Y., and Dujuan Kelley, New York, N.Y.; stepdaughters, Diamond Kelley, New York, N.Y., and Cherron Joy (Dewayne) Twillie, Rochester, N.Y.; mother, Virginia Kelley; sister, Be Be Shellman, both of Bartow; friends, Bryant Burton, Carlton Merritt, Robert Baker and Arren Warren; and a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
