Mr. Joe Louis “Jake” Mack
Mr. Joe Louis “Jake” Mack, 69, of Louisville entered into rest on Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 19, 2008, at 2 p.m. at the St. Matthews AME Church and Jones Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Mack was a native of Jefferson County, the son of the late Josiah and Angeline Timmons Mack and retired after many years as a construction worker with E.A. Mann Construction.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Nell Walker Mack of Louisville; two children, Joanne Cunningham and Alton Mack, both of Louisville; his siblings, James Hubert (Lessie) Mack of Louisville, Wylene M. (Manuell) Young of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Dorothy M. Sanders of Hamilton, N.J.; father-in-law, William “Sapp” Walker, Sr. of Louisville; two grandchildren, Brittney LaPaige Cunningham of Louisville, and LaShanta Mack of Swainsboro; sister-in-law, Ina Lee Mack, Willie Eva “Meanie” Davis, Judy Walker, Raymond Walker, all of Louisville, and Almarie D. Mack of Trenton, N.J.; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Family maybe contacted at the residence, 479 Forest Drive, Louisville or at Davis Funeral Home.

Davis Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Gladys “Big MaMa” Parrish
Mrs. Gladys “Big MaMa” Parrish, 96, of Stapleton entered into rest Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008, at Gibson Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Parrish was a Baptist and a homemaker. She was the daughter of the late Herbert and Ida Marsh Glover.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, at 2 p.m. at James Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Harlan Noles and Smith Dickson officiating. Burial followed at Stapleton Memorial Garden.

Mrs. Parrish is preceded in death by her husband, Mide Parrish Jr.; and three daughters, Evelyn Key, Beatrice Key and Maude Key Beasley.

Survivors include her children, Barbara Hadden Armstrong, Boneville, Paulette (Julian) Arrington, Keysville, Paul “Frank” (Terry) Parrish Jr., Stapleton, and Hubert “Buck” (Rhonda) Parrish, Sneads Ferry, N.C.; a sister, Ruby G. Jones, Stone Mountain; cousin, Mattie Smith, Avera; several nieces and nephews, 20 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren, and 43 great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were her great-grandsons, Travis Hadden, Jonathan Hadden, John Hadden, James Vaughn, Steve Blount, Jeff Phillips, Will Shelton, David Wilson and Heath Mills.

Honorary Pallbearers were her grandsons, Donnie Hadden, Bobby Gene Hadden, Robbie Hadden, Frankie Parrish, Clay Parrish, Jessie Hadden, Jamie Arrington, B.J. Arrington, Cody Parrish and Jason Parrish, and her great-great-grandchildren, Jared, Camden, Jacob, Cole, Kiley, Easton, Caleb, Jace, Cadence, Gracie and Chloe.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wrens Church of God Building Fund, 102 Phillips St. NW, Wrens, GA 30833.

James Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Ozilla Kent Simons
Ms. Ozilla Kent Simons, 96, of Augusta entered into rest on Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, in LaGrange.

Ms. Simons, the daughter of the late Joseph and Nancy Kent, was born in Glascock County, where she was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Mitchell.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008, at Elliott Sons Funeral Home Lumpkin Road Chapel at 2 p.m., with Rev. Jerry Wilson officiating. Interment followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

She was preceded in death by her, husband Horace Simons.

Survivors include her daughter, Kay Simons Wood of LaGrange; two sons, Garry (Sue) Simons of Warrenton, and Kendall Simons of Augusta; four sisters-in-law, Mary Kent, Clyde Garbutt, Edith Hanson and Marguerite English; four grandchildren, Lisa Simons Gill, Lynn (Kristi) Wood, Angela (Jason) Wood Facey and Alex Wood; two great-grandchildren, Zak Wood and Krislyn Wood; and numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews as well as many other family members and friends.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to the following organizations, The Alzheimer’s Association 1899 Central Avenue, Augusta, Georgia 30904 or American Diabetes Association 17 Executive Park Suite 115 Atlanta, GA, 30329.

Mr. Robert Wesley Smith Jr.
Mr. Robert Wesley Smith Jr., 85, of Stapleton entered into rest on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008, at the VA Medical Center, Augusta.

Mr. Smith was born in McDuffie County to the late Robert W. Smith Sr. and Martha Wren Smith. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a retired electrician.

Graveside services were held Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008, at 3 p.m., with the Rev. John Jenkins officiating in the Adams Chapel Cemetery, Dearing.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Pauline Smith Stewart; a brother, Auther Lee Smith; his son, Reid Chaney; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth C. Smith, Harlem; one brother, Hoke (Delle) Smith, Dearing; six sons, Ronnie (Gail) Smith, Stapleton, Richard (Sandy) Smith, Warner Robins, Robert (Zettie) Smith, Hendersonville, N.C., Allen (Justine) Smith, Dearing, Bobby (Song) Chaney, Killeen, Texas, Roby (Betty) Chaney, Austell; four daughters, Rozie (Rick) Kerr, Jonesville, S.C., Reba Smith, Jonesville, S.C., Bessie (Jimmy) Law, Holly Pond, Ala., and Leila (Jerry) Sineath; 41 grandchildren, 68 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Kevin Smith, Jeff Queen, John Smith, Arthur Smith, Blake Smith, Bobby Smith and William Stewart Jr.

If so desired, memorials may be made to a charity of your choice or to his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Smith.

Mrs. Myrtle “Big Ma” Usry
Funeral services for Mrs. Myrtle “Big Ma” Usry, 86, of Stapleton were held on Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, at 3:30 p.m., at the Stone Springfield AME Church, Stapleton, with the Rev. Michael G. Ephraim Sr., pastor, officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include four daughters, Leila Winns, Lena (Johnny) Jordan, Louise Clark, and Lorene Usry; one son, Sammie (Blondell) Usry; five brothers, Jimmie (Classie) Roberts, Mitchell (Ollie) Roberts, all of Stapleton, Waymon Roberts, Lindsey Roberts, Avera, and Luther Roberts, Wrens; one sister, Pauline Davis, Pompano Beach, Fla.; two daughters-in-law, Lois Usry, Stapleton, and Lenola M. Usry, Louisville; 26 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; a host of great-great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

Freeman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. M. L. Wilcher
Mr. M. L. Wilcher, 80, of Midville entered into rest on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008, at his residence following an extended illness.

Mr. Wilcher was a native and livelong resident of Emanuel County, a member of Hines Baptist Church near Midville, and was retired from Battle Lumber Company in Wadley.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, at Hines Baptist Church, near Midville, with Rev. Randy Walden officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Hart Wilcher; two sons, Kenneth Wilcher of Valdosta, and Robert Wilcher of Rosharon, Texas; three daughters, Elaine Greer of Nederland, Texas, Lynn Williams of Wrens, and Linda Cautt of Nashville, Tenn.; a brother, Ray Wilcher of Midville; six sisters, Chris Moore of Midville, Bernice Brigdon of Sylvania, Maxie Booker of Cayce, S.C., Anita Holland of Augusta, Betty Wells of Martinez, and Pat Haycraft of Wadley; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were William Hart, Danley Hart, Stanley Hart, Dewayne Hart, William Roberson and Charles Wilcher.

Johnson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. J. Doak Williams
J. Doak Williams, 84, of Clearwater, Fla. entered into rest on Friday, Dec. 5, 2008, at the Bay Pines VA Medical Center.

Mr. Williams was born on Jan. 24, 1925 in Gibson to Emmitt R. Williams and Annie Laura Lamb Williams. He was the first patient at Old Capitol Inn in 1970. He moved to Clearwater in 1983 and was a 40-year member of the Free and Accepted Masons, and was also a Shriner.

A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, at Florida National cemetery in Bushnell, Fla.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Helen Medak Williams of Clearwater, Fla.; two sons, Jim Marshall of Clearwater, Fla. and John (Beth) Williams of Federal Way, Wash.; three brothers, Lewis Williams of Louisville, Ernest Williams of Dade City, Fla., and Raymond Williams of Darien; three sisters, Sara Sloan of Groveland, Fla., Ruby Johnson of Acworth, and Laura Smith of Louisville; five grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.

In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to Bay Pines VAHCS-GPF1086, Hospice Unit, P.O. Box 5005, Bay Pines, FL 33744

Miss Ladye Brown
Miss Ladye Brown, 93, of The Gable’s in Royston entered into rest on Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, at the Cobb Memorial Hospital in Royston.

Miss Brown was born in Hart County, Jan. 29, 1915, daughter of the late Asa Chandler Brown and the late Nancy Sewell Brown. She attended GSCW in Milledgeville, and then attended the University of Georgia where she received her masters of education. She taught school in Wrens, Gainesville City School, and Royston Elementary School. Miss Brown was a member of the Franklin County Educators Association and a lifelong member of the Georgia Retired Teachers Association.

Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 15, 2008, at the Rose Hill cemetery in Royston, with Rev. Byron Greene and Rev. David White officiating.

Miss Brown was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Brown; and one brother, Asa Vandiver Brown Sr.

Survivors include nephews, Asa V. (Sylvia) Brown Jr. of Royston, James D. (Flo) Brown of Dewy Rose; nieces, Mary Ann Stephens and Linda August, both of Jasper; great-nieces and nephews, Kristin Brown, Amy Flowers, Claire Lively, Will Brown and Joe Brown; great-nephews, Carter and Ethan Lively.

Memorials may be made to the Royston Baptist Church Family Life Center, 767 Church Street, Royston, GA 30662.

Mrs. Elizabeth “ZiZi” Zapata Cobb
Mrs. Elizabeth “ZiZi” Zapata Cobb, 47, of Martinez entered into rest at her residence on Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008.

Mrs. Cobb graduated from Evans High School, and Georgia Military College. She coached t-ball for the Martinez-Evans Little League. She was an active member of the Martinez Merchants and the Columbia County Fish and Game Club.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008, in the Belair Road Chapel of Platt’s Funeral Home at 2 p.m., with Rev. Oscar Whiteside officiating.

Survivors include her husband, Ronnie Cobb; her parents, Hector C. and Chris R. Zapata of Martinez; two daughters, Kookie Cobb and Misty Cobb of New Albany, Miss.; two brothers, Mike Zapata (Debbie) of Evans, and Rob Zapata (Donna) of Evans; two sisters, Maria Dye (Alan) of Gibson, and Felicia Zapata-Hughes (Spencer) of Appling; three grandchildren, Quitman, Shonna and Cheyenne Hamlin, all of New Albany, Miss.; nieces and nephews; and her pet, Lady Diana.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the MCG Neurological Center at 1120 15th Street Augusta, GA 30901.

Mr. Raymond “Ray” Fields
Mr. Raymond “Ray” Fields of Louisville entered into rest on Friday, Dec. 12, 2008.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008, at Greater St. Matthew AME Church in Louisville.

Survivors include his wife, Jacqueline Fields; daughters, Jeannine Fields and Rashondor Fields; stepdaughter, Natasha Pryor (Jermaine); siblings, Dorothy Bennett and Henry Morgan (Ada).

Ms. Ruby Lee Jordan
Ms. Ruby Lee Jordan, 63, of Wrens entered into rest on Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008, at the Gibson Health and Rehab Center, Gibson.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Lofton AME Church, Wrens, with Rev. Michael G. Ephraim Sr., pastor, officiating. Interment was in the Sugar Hill Cemetery, Wrens.

Freeman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Josephine Miller
Mrs. Josephine Miller, 94, of Avera entered into rest on Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008, at Jefferson Hospital.

Mrs. Miller was a homemaker. She was the wife of the late Macon Miller, and the daughter of the late Joseph and Ruby Harden McWatty. She was the oldest living member of Walden UMC.

Graveside services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008, at Waldens United Methodist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Griffin Thompson officiating.

Survivors include a son, Donnie (Karen) Miller, Augusta; a daughter, Maxine Raley, Avera; and a granddaughter, Kristy Miller, Atlanta.

Pallbearers were Jimmy McWatty, Jay McWatty, Brad Martin, Ricky Godowns, David Rabun and Steven Sheram.

Memorials may be made to Walden UMC cemetery Fund, 1760 Walden Church Road, Avera, GA 30803.

Mr. Stephen Thomas Morgan Jr.
Mr. Stephen Thomas Morgan Jr., 93, of Louisville entered into rest on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008, in Jefferson Hospital.

Mr. Morgan was a native of Monroe, N.C., a son of the late Stephen Thomas Morgan Sr. and Minnie Mae Sinclair Morgan. He was a World War II Army veteran and retired after many years from the Civil Service as an automotive inspector and was of the Baptist faith.

Graveside memorial services were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008, in the Louisville City Cemetery, with Rev. Randal Whitaker officiating.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Emily B. Morgan of Louisville; son, Stephen Thomas (Shirley) Morgan III of Sylvania; grandson, Stephen Thomas (Kelly) Morgan IV of Harlem; great-granddaughters, Mallory M. Kearney (Robby), and Meagan H. Morgan; great-great-granddaughter, Raygan Diane Kearney; and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, Ill. 60601-7633.
