Mrs. Mazie Stephens
Mrs. Mazie Stephens of Wadley entered into rest on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2007, in Augusta.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2007, at 1 p.m. at Gordon Grove Baptist Church in Louisville, with Rev. W.E. Johnson and Rev. Ronnie Harden officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include eight daughters, Eva Burke, Susie (Clyde) Tompkins, and Dinelle (Curtis) Fields, Jacksonville, Fla., Bessie (Willie) Danford, Dorothy Gilmore, and Louise (Colen) Turner, Wadley, Margaret (Clayton) Baker, Atlanta, and JoAnn (James) Trimble, Augusta; two sons, Jessie (Mary) Thomas, Wadley, and Carl Stephens, Bartow; three sisters, Bessie Roberson, Annie Ruth Holmes, and Annie Laura Scott; 33 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, two sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

Mr. Oma Watkins of Detroit, Mich. departed this life Dec. 21, 2007.
Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007, at Sand Valley A.M.E. Church Cemetery, Louisville.

Mr. James Edward "Ed" Ashley
Mr. James Edward “Ed” Ashley, 75, of Harlem, entered into rest Friday, Jan. 4, 2008, at his residence.
Mr. Ashley was a son of the late Gilbert D. and Gussie Stevens Ashley and a native of Midville, but spent most of his life in Richmond and Columbia counties. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and retired from the CSX Railroad with 39 years as a conductor. He was a member of Martinez Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Thomas Poteet and Son with Rev. Phil Winsett and Rev. Grover Lee officiating. Interment followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Mr. Ashley was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
Survivors include his wife Nelle Luckey Ashley; his son, Jeffery Ashley of Harlem; daughters, Deborah Ashley (Melvin) Hadden of Bartow and Cyndi Ashley (Terry) Norman of Harlem; two step-grandchildren, Jonathon and Fancy Norman of Harlem; brother, Carlton (Ann) Ashley of Langley, S.C.; and sister: Blanche McCorkle of Augusta.
Pallbearers were Gene Gray, Jerry Fisk, Ron Frain, Rocky Hendrix, Bobby Mayo and Lamar McKinney.

Mr. Nathaniel Brown
Mr. Nathaniel Brown, of Augusta, entered into rest Sunday, Dec. 31, 2007, at his residence.
He was a native of Richmond County.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Bethel A.M.E. Church with Rev. Mark Pierson officiating. Burial was in Flat Rock Baptist Church Cemetery, Jefferson County.
Survivors include his mother, Mary E. Brown; two sons, Nathaniel (Latisha) Brown and Terrance (Tracy) Brown; three grandchildren, Sasha Brown, Sybil Brown, and Uriah Brown; three sisters, Cleaster Pryor, Bobbie J. Brown, and Ida Trutt; two brothers-in-law, Bennie Brown and Bennie Pryor Jr.; devoted friend, Linda Jackson; a host of other relatives and friends.

Mr. Kevin Wayne Carroll
Mr. Kevin Wayne Carroll, 45, of Wrens, entered into rest Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007.
Kevin had an avid interest in sailing and marine diving. He was a Navy veteran and had received three Navy Commendation awards plus special commendations from the Atlantic Fleet Commander. He was a marine engineer and certified deep-sea diver. He had worked on supply barges to off-shore oil platforms, plus inter-coastal transportation and Caribbean supply transports. He had been the manager of two nursing home food preparation facilities. He also played in several bands. He attended Gadsden Alabama State College and Snead Junior College in Alabama. Kevin was born in Birmingham, Ala. and lived in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, California, Louisiana and Germany. He was a member of Vidette United Methodist Church and American Legion Post 229, Wrens.
A service of celebration was held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, at James Funeral Home, Wrens, with Rev. Jimmy Cason, Statesboro District Superintendent, South Georgia UMC, presiding.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Emmitt Carroll III.
Survivors include his parents Rev. Dr. Emmitt Tip Carroll and Kathy Carroll, Wrens.; two brothers, Jerry Carroll of Winder, and Steve (Teri) Carroll of Minco, Okla.; a sister, Angelia (Jeff) Mobley of Durham, N.C.; Kevin Carroll of Ft. Myers, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews, and great nephews.
Honorary pallbearers were members of American Legion Post 229, Wrens.

Mrs. Naomi Hadden Coxwell, 88, of Oxford, entered into rest Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008, at the Covington Manor Nursing Home, Covington.
Mrs. Coxwell was a native of Stapleton and a member of the Stapleton Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, at Stapleton Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Daniel officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Survivors include her son, Mr. James “Eddie” (Glenda) Sams of Oxford; one granddaughter, Tracy Sams (Bob) Wheeler; one great- granddaughter, Nicole Wheeler; several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were the men of her church.

Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, at Woodlawn Baptist Church in Louisville.

Mr. Charlie Ferman "Papa" Gay
Mr. Charlie Ferman “Papa” Gay, 69, of Matthews, entered into rest Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, at 2 p.m. at James Funeral Home with Rev. Ed Chance and Rev. Tim Farrel officiating. Burial followed at Mt. Moriah Cemetery.
Mr. Gay was a native of Warren County. Mr. Gay was of the Baptist faith, he was retired from J. M. Huber Corp. after 26 years of service as a supervisor, and he was in the U.S. Army. He was the son of the late Tommy Franklin and Nora Mae Hobbs Gay.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Frances Gay; a step-son, Steve (Teresa) Arrington; a daughter, Anita (Dean) Maruca; two brothers, Edward (Betty Ann) Gay, Eugene (Estelle) Gay; three sisters, Dorothy Newsome, Doris Stewart, Alice Nutt; six grandchildren, Lee-Ann (Michael) Watson, Stephanie Arrington, Amber Maruca, Sarah Arrington, Megan Maruca, Trent Maruca; and a great-grandchild, Lauren Taylor Watson.
Pallbearers were Dan Arrington, Bob Barrow, Glen Bazemore, Ralph Jordan, Harvey McNair and Morris Hannah.

Mrs. Pam Harden
Pam Harden, 78, of Lady Lake, Fla., died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2007.
Funeral services were held at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 31, 2007, at Beyers Funeral Chapel in Lady Lake, with Pastor Gary Washburn officiating.
Mrs. Harden was born in Augusta. She was a graduate of Wrens High School in 1946 and was the daughter of the late Jesse and Lucy Mays of Wrens. She was a retired saleswoman in the oil industry, a member of the Gospel Notes and Lamplighters singing groups, a member of the Grace Tabernacle Choir, represented The Villages volunteering for many functions and was a member of Grace Tabernacle of Wildwood.
Survivors include her daughter, Sharon Bollen, St. Cloud, Fla.; sons, Mike of Richmond Hill, Randy of Douglasville, and Mark of Lady Lake Fla.; a sister, Vivian Whitfield of Brunswick; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mr. William Prickett, 59, of Matthews, entered into rest Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008.

Mr. William Benford "Boney" Upton
Mr. William Benford “Boney” Upton, of Augusta, entered into rest Sunday, Jan. 6, 2008, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center.
Mr. Upton was a native of Jefferson County and had made Augusta his home for most of his life. He was the son of the late William and Ruby Braddock Upton. Mr. Upton was a veteran of the Korean Conflict where he served with the Air Force. He retired after 37 years with Westinghouse at SRS and then for several years with Hertz Rentals. Mr. Upton was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and Chairman of the Board of Deacons. He was a former member of Southside Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008 at 1 p.m. from the Chapel of Chance and Hydrick Funeral Directors with Reverend Greg Bentley and Reverend Wayne Hunsucker officiating. Interment followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Johnnnie C. Upton; two sons, William B. Upton Jr. of Evans, Danny K. Upton of Augusta; one granddaughter, Nicole (Jonathan) Brantley; one grandson, Justin Upton; two great-grandchildren, Morgan and Josiah Brantley; two sisters, Jeanette U. Glover of North Augusta, S.C., and Maureen U. Crutchfield of Gibson; two sisters-in-law, Jeannie Reeves and Ann Moseley; mother-in-law, Magerite Chalker.

Mrs. Doris Mohr Wege
Mrs. Doris Mohr Wege, 79, of Louisville, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, at her residence.
Mrs. Wege was a native of Milwaukee, Wis., a daughter of the late Ernst John and Ester Krieger Mohr. She was a homemaker and a member of the St. Mary Magdalene Episcopal Church. For many years she was a volunteer with the Louisville Food Pantry.
Services were held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, in the St. Mary Magdalene Episcopal Church in Louisville with Father Ron Southerland officiating. Burial was in the Georgia Veterans Memorial cemetery in Milledgeville.
Mrs. Wege was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. William R. Wege.
Survivors include a son, Dr. W. E. (Carol) Wege of Hinesville; daughters, Donna (Dr. Calvin) Dudley of Albuquerque, N.M. and Linda (Dr. Chip) Pritchard of Louisville; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mr. James Lester “Les” Williams, 75, of Jupiter, Fla., died on Monday, Dec. 24, 2007.
Mr. Williams served in the Korean War and had a35 years career at Pratt and Whitney.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008, at Royal Palm Funeral Home in West Palm Beach, Fla.
Mr. Williams was preceded in death by two wives Elizabeth and Eileen Williams; his parents, John and Eula Williams of Avera; and three brothers, Bill, J. Gene and Dell Williams.
Survivors include his children, Dianne, Meg and Tim Williams; stepchildren, David, Becky, Linda and Tim Williams; a brother, Jimmy (Nelda) Williams of Wrens; two sister-in-laws, Lynn Williams and Margaret Williams; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
