Mr. Mervin J. Smith, 66, of Gibson entered into rest Sunday, March 16, 2008, at his residence. A native of Glascock County, he worked at Jebco Corp. in Warrenton. He was the son of the late Mr. B.C. “Bish” and Marie Clark Smith.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Sheppard Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Wayne Todd officiating. Interment was in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Avera.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Walton Smith.
Survivors include his son, Trent Smith; his brother, Mr. B.C. (Joyce) Smith of Gibson; his aunt, Mrs. Mattie Smith of Avera; and two nieces, Juanice Gordy and Julie Onley; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Frances Smith Kelley.

Mr. Jimmie Spence of Wadley entered into eternal rest on Monday, March 17, 2008, in Wadley.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, March 22, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Hudson Mortuary Chapel in Wadley.

Mr. Eugene “Gene” Stone, 55, of Wrens entered into rest on Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at Trinity Hospital in Augusta.
Funeral services were held on Monday, March 24, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Lofton AME Church, Wrens, with the Rev. Michael G. Ephraim Sr., pastor, officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include three sisters, Bernice (Tony) Baptiste, Brooklyn, N.Y., Michelle Stone, Virginia, and Joann (Arthur) Green, Augusta; three brothers, Willie (Ruthie) Stone, Wrens, Sammie Lee Stone, CoCo Beach, Fla., and George Stone, Seattle, Wash.; extended family Pearl and Frances Nelson, both of Wrens; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mrs. Bertha Lee Carswell Swint
Mrs. Bertha Lee Carswell Swint, 95, of Bartow departed this life, Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at her residence.
Mrs. Swint was a native of Jefferson County, the daughter of Robert and Kitty Jordan Carswell, a member of the Mt. Pleasant Christian Methodist Episcopal Church where she served on the Stewardess Board serving as vice president for many years, on the Usher Board serving as president for several years and the Missionary Society. “Girl” or “Shangie” as she was also known organized the First Pastor’s Aid Club at Mt. Pleasant CME. She attended Booker T. Washington School and as she supported her children’s education she was elected as the first president of the Jefferson County High PTA and later worked as a substitute teacher for many years.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 24, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant CME Church and cemetery, Bartow, with Rev. Lee Wilcher and Rev. Stefon Young officiating.
Survivors include her children, Mattie Jean Swint, Catherine Swint and Marie Swint of Bartow, Clifford (Elaine) Swint Jr. of College Park, Carswell (Edna) Swint of Louisville; grandchildren, Ralph Emory (Melody) Walton of Lawrenceville, Keith (Vicki) Swint of Jonesboro, Christopher Swint of College Park, Candace (Hollis) Bethea of Atlanta; four great-grandchildren, Ralph Emory Walton II of Chattanooga, Tenn., Bryan D. Survivors include four sisters, Lillie Nelson, Rosa (Eddie) Lamb of Wrens, Linda Hannah of Lithonia, and Brenda Berry of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three brothers, Ray Berry Sr., George Berry and Andrew Berry, all of Wrens; adopted sister and brother, Antee Roberts and Albert (Dorothy) Nelson of Wrens; aunt, Mary Berry; and a special and devoted friend, Willie Mae Carlyle of Waynesboro.

Ms. Mildred Roberts Baggott Clarke Clerc of Aiken, S. C. entered into rest on Sunday, March 23, 2008,
She was born in Matthews, but has been a lifelong resident of Aiken County. She was retired from Bath Division of United Merchants. She was a member of Warrenville United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Graniteville Leisure Club, Spares and Pairs, Rainbow Club, Daughters of Confederate and was a former President of the Widows and Widowers Club.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, March 27, 2008, at 3 p.m. in the Chapel of Napier Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Watson and Rev. Steven Phillips officiating. The interment followed at the Graniteville Cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed Clerc; and her parents, Otis Roberts and Gertrude Gay Roberts.
Survivors include a son, Wade (Jean) Baggott Jr. of Graniteville; and a daughter, Joy B. (Carl) Silas of Warrenville; stepchildren, Ken (Linda) Clarke and David Clerc both of Aiken and David Clarke of Augusta, Beth Miller of Missouri and Deidre Tice of Aiken; 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Floyd Allen “Man” Denton, 65, of Gibson entered into rest Friday, March 28, 2008, at University Hospital, Augusta.
A native of Glascock County, a farmer, he loved gardening. Mr. Denton worked in well maintenance. He was a fisherman and coon hunter.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 31, 2008, at Sheppard Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Phil Bray officiating. Interment was in Bethel United Methodist Church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Mrs. Mary Oxford Denton; one son, Bobby (Linda) Denton of Tennille; two stepdaughters, Ginny Langham of Camak, and Shirley (David) Smith of Dearing; one brother, Billy (Delia) Denton of Tennille; 19 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Deacon Horace "Sam" Gross Sr.
Deacon Horace “Sam” Gross Sr. departed this life Friday, March 28, 2008, at a local hospital.
Deacon Gross was a native of Jefferson County, the son of the late Randal Gross and Lassie Jordan Gross. He attended the Jefferson County School system and at an early age joined the Pierce Grove Baptist Church where he served as Deacon since 1958, assistant chairman of the Deacon Board for many years, Sunday school teacher for over 40 years. On Jan. 20, 1946, he was issued an Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Army with two bronze stars and the Victory Medal from World War II. He later worked with Southern Road Builders Construction Company (a division of APAC) until his retirement in April 1, 1989. At that time he started his own construction company and worked until recent years. Deacon Gross was a member of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Sons of Louisville Lodge #579 for over 38 years, member of Morning Star Society and president of the Fair and Honest Society.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 31, 2008, at 2 p.m. at the Pierce Grove Baptist Church and churchyard cemetery.

Rev. Dr. Emmett Thomas Martin Jr.
Rev. Dr. Emmett Thomas Martin Jr., of Augusta entered into rest on Thursday, March 27, 2008, at his residence.
Rev. Martin, a native of Augusta, was a 1956 graduate of Lucy Laney High School and a 1960 graduate of Benedict College. In 1997, he received a Master of Divinity from Jacksonville Theological Seminary (Lahairoi Baptist College) and a Doctor of Ministry in 2002 from Lake Charles Bible College, Lake Charles, La. He served as pastor of St. Paul Baptist Church, Louisville, from 1960 to 1972 and as pastor of Historic Springfield Baptist Church from 1972 to the present. His affiliations were the National Baptist Convention, USA, General Missionary Convention of Georgia, former dean and president of the Congress of Christian Education for Walker Baptist Association, vice president of Springfield Village Park Foundation Board of Directors, University Hospital Clergy Staff, Hope Homes Board of Directors, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Rev. Martin taught at A.R. Johnson High School, was former assistant manager of Conger Insurance and former staff member of Pilgrim Health and Life Insurance Company. Numerous honors awarded included Inductee into Morehouse Georgia Board of Reverend Preachers in 1996 and Mayor’s Proclamation declaring Dec. 7, 1996, as E.T. Martin Day in Augusta.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Historic Springfield Baptist Church with Rev. Clyde Hill, Sr. officiating.
Survivors include his wife, Betty R. Mr. James C. Utley
Mr. James Cleveland Utley, 76, of Wrens departed this life on March 24, 2008, at the VA Hospital in Augusta.
Mr. Utley was born to James and Vandella Utley in Middle Creek, N.C. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and received the National Defense Service Medal during his time of service. He joined the House of God C.O.G.I.C. in 2004 and was a member until his health failed.
Funeral services for Mr. Utley were held on Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at 1 p.m. at The House of God Church of God In Christ, Thomson, with the Bishop Mark Walden, pastor, officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Mr. George Fredrick Arrington, 67, of Harlem entered into rest March 30, 2008, at Doctors Hospital.
He was born in Blythe and served in the United States Army and was retired from Graniteville Mill in Augusta.
Graveside funeral services were held Thursday, April 3, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Moriah cemetery in Matthews, with Rev. Mike Sutphin officiating.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Alice and John Arrington; his brothers, Willard Arrington, Barry Doyle Arrington and John R. “Big John” Arrington.
Survivors include a son, George “Chris” (Rose) Arrington; a granddaughter, Jessica R. Welsted; his former wife, Paulette Arrington of Augusta; a brother, Judson Arrington of Twin Falls, Idaho; numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Eric Mims, Bob Caster, Scott Burke, Keith Arrington, Donald Hancock, Richard Morrison and Jay Dunham.

Funeral services for Mrs. Myrtis Brady of Augusta were conducted Thursday, April 3, 2008, at 1 p.m. at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Bobby L. Truitt, pastor, and Rev. Robert L. Williams officiating. Interment was in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
'Mrs. Brady was born to the late Samuel and Annie Mae Williams on Feb. 9, 1920, in Stapleton. She was married
to Dock Brady, who preceded her in death. During her later years, she joined Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, where she served on the Missionary Board and sang with the Walkers Baptist Choir.
Survivors include two sons, Deacon Solomon (Johnnie Mae) Franklin, and Samuel Franklin, both of Augusta; two sons-in-law, Porter Evans, Los Angeles, Calif., Walter Singleton, Brooklyn, N.Y.; 23 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
