Mr. Mervin J. Smith
Mr. Mervin J. Smith, 66, of Gibson entered into rest Sunday, March 16, 2008, at his residence. A native of Glascock County, he worked at Jebco Corp. in Warrenton. He was the son of the late Mr. B.C. “Bish” and Marie Clark Smith.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Sheppard Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Wayne Todd officiating. Interment was in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Avera.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Walton Smith.

Survivors include his son, Trent Smith; his brother, Mr. B.C. (Joyce) Smith of Gibson; his aunt, Mrs. Mattie Smith of Avera; and two nieces, Juanice Gordy and Julie Onley; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Frances Smith Kelley.

Pallbearers are Dean Couch, Troy Clark, Derrick Brooks, George Moore, Troy Bales and John Onley. Memorials may be made to the Wrens Church of God Building Fund in care of Mrs. Betty Shelton, 14112 Hwy. 1 North, Wrens, GA 30833.

Mr. Jimmie Spence
Mr. Jimmie Spence of Wadley entered into eternal rest on Monday, March 17, 2008, in Wadley.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, March 22, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Hudson Mortuary Chapel in Wadley.

Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia Denise Middleton, New Haven, Conn., and Debby (Milton) Graham, Wadley; two sons, Michael Walker and Alvin Spence, Midville; one sister, Lillie Mae Heath, Winter Haven, Fla.; two brothers, James Clifford Spence Jr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Willie Henry Spence, Philadelphia, Pa.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchildren.

Hudson Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Eugene "Gene" Stone
Mr. Eugene “Gene” Stone, 55, of Wrens entered into rest on Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at Trinity Hospital in Augusta.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 24, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Lofton AME Church, Wrens, with the Rev. Michael G. Ephraim Sr., pastor, officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include three sisters, Bernice (Tony) Baptiste, Brooklyn, N.Y., Michelle Stone, Virginia, and Joann (Arthur) Green, Augusta; three brothers, Willie (Ruthie) Stone, Wrens, Sammie Lee Stone, CoCo Beach, Fla., and George Stone, Seattle, Wash.; extended family Pearl and Frances Nelson, both of Wrens; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mrs. Bertha Lee Carswell Swint
Mrs. Bertha Lee Carswell Swint, 95, of Bartow departed this life, Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at her residence.

Mrs. Swint was a native of Jefferson County, the daughter of Robert and Kitty Jordan Carswell, a member of the Mt. Pleasant Christian Methodist Episcopal Church where she served on the Stewardess Board serving as vice president for many years, on the Usher Board serving as president for several years and the Missionary Society. “Girl” or “Shangie” as she was also known organized the First Pastor’s Aid Club at Mt. Pleasant CME. She attended Booker T. Washington School and as she supported her children’s education she was elected as the first president of the Jefferson County High PTA and later worked as a substitute teacher for many years.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 24, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant CME Church and cemetery, Bartow, with Rev. Lee Wilcher and Rev. Stefon Young officiating.

Survivors include her children, Mattie Jean Swint, Catherine Swint and Marie Swint of Bartow, Clifford (Elaine) Swint Jr. of College Park, Carswell (Edna) Swint of Louisville; grandchildren, Ralph Emory (Melody) Walton of Lawrenceville, Keith (Vicki) Swint of Jonesboro, Christopher Swint of College Park, Candace (Hollis) Bethea of Atlanta; four great-grandchildren, Ralph Emory Walton II of Chattanooga, Tenn., Bryan D. Walton of Lawrenceville, and Shayla Swint and Jalen Swint of Jonesboro; her extended family Sally Smith Brooks, Angeli Brooks, Byron (Kreslyn) Brooks of Bartow, and Sally V. Brooks of Charleston, S.C.; godchildren, Teresa Williams of Las Vegas, Nev., Dimetria (Ernest) Jackson-Priest of Irvine, Calif., Janya Williams of Rex; a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Mr. Walter ‘Memp’ Sanders Berry, 51, entered into rest Sunday, March 23, 2008.

Funeral services were held Thursday, March 27, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Ways Grove Baptist Church, Wrens, with Rev. Thomas Berry officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include four sisters, Lillie Nelson, Rosa (Eddie) Lamb of Wrens, Linda Hannah of Lithonia, and Brenda Berry of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three brothers, Ray Berry Sr., George Berry and Andrew Berry, all of Wrens; adopted sister and brother, Antee Roberts and Albert (Dorothy) Nelson of Wrens; aunt, Mary Berry; and a special and devoted friend, Willie Mae Carlyle of Waynesboro.

Burnett Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. James Morris "Chief" Brooks
Funeral services for Mr. James Morris “Chief” Brooks were held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2008, at Pine Hill Baptist Church in Louisville.

Survivors include his children, Tammie Gamble and James Morris (Michelle) Brooks Jr.; companion, Annie Johnson; siblings, Mattie Flournoy, Joe Brooks, Juanita Reaves, Eddie L. Brooks, Eva J. Brooks, Elsie Whitfield, Shirley Dogan and Freddie Brooks; and seven grandchildren.

Ms. Mildred Roberts Baggott Clarke Clerc
Ms. Mildred Roberts Baggott Clarke Clerc of Aiken, S. C. entered into rest on Sunday, March 23, 2008,

She was born in Matthews, but has been a lifelong resident of Aiken County. She was retired from Bath Division of United Merchants. She was a member of Warrenville United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Graniteville Leisure Club, Spares and Pairs, Rainbow Club, Daughters of Confederate and was a former President of the Widows and Widowers Club.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday, March 27, 2008, at 3 p.m. in the Chapel of Napier Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Watson and Rev. Steven Phillips officiating. The interment followed at the Graniteville Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed Clerc; and her parents, Otis Roberts and Gertrude Gay Roberts.

Survivors include a son, Wade (Jean) Baggott Jr. of Graniteville; and a daughter, Joy B. (Carl) Silas of Warrenville; stepchildren, Ken (Linda) Clarke and David Clerc both of Aiken and David Clarke of Augusta, Beth Miller of Missouri and Deidre Tice of Aiken; 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were grandsons.

Memorials may be made, in Mrs. Clerc’s honor, to Warrenville United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 473, Warrenville, S.C. 29851.

Mr. Floyd Allen "Man" Denton
Mr. Floyd Allen “Man” Denton, 65, of Gibson entered into rest Friday, March 28, 2008, at University Hospital, Augusta.

A native of Glascock County, a farmer, he loved gardening. Mr. Denton worked in well maintenance. He was a fisherman and coon hunter.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 31, 2008, at Sheppard Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Phil Bray officiating. Interment was in Bethel United Methodist Church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Mrs. Mary Oxford Denton; one son, Bobby (Linda) Denton of Tennille; two stepdaughters, Ginny Langham of Camak, and Shirley (David) Smith of Dearing; one brother, Billy (Delia) Denton of Tennille; 19 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Russell Denton, David Denton, Joseph Wooten, Russell Tharpe, David Wells and David Smith.

Honorary pallbearers were George Key, Edmond Dye, George Cooper and B.J. Denton. Sheppard Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Boisie Lee Hannah
Mr. Boisie Lee Hannah of Augusta entered into rest Friday, March 28, 2008, at the University Hospital.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Hannah, Augusta; nine sons, Anthony Hannah, Tony Hannah, Darnell (Tamara) Hannah, Donald Bennett, Patrick Neely, Antonio Hannah, Calvin Hannah, Randall Hannah, Xavier Gilmore all of Augusta; six daughters, Jacqueline Jones, Angelena Hannah, Olivia Hannah, Connie Hannah, Ashley Camacho and D’Anna Hannah all of Augusta; mother, Corine Hannah, Wrens; six brothers, Monroe Hannah, Charlie Hannah, Philadelphia, Pa.; Tommie Lee Hannah, Brooklyn, N.Y., Eddie Hannah, Robert Hannah both of Augusta, Willie Hannah, Houston, Texas; five sisters, Florine Langston, Annie Howard both of Augusta, Salula Lawrence, Houston, Texas, Janie Thomas, Wrens, and Carrie (Willie) Williams, Beech Island, S.C.; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and friends.

Deacon Horace "Sam" Gross Sr.
Deacon Horace “Sam” Gross Sr. departed this life Friday, March 28, 2008, at a local hospital.

Deacon Gross was a native of Jefferson County, the son of the late Randal Gross and Lassie Jordan Gross. He attended the Jefferson County School system and at an early age joined the Pierce Grove Baptist Church where he served as Deacon since 1958, assistant chairman of the Deacon Board for many years, Sunday school teacher for over 40 years. On Jan. 20, 1946, he was issued an Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Army with two bronze stars and the Victory Medal from World War II. He later worked with Southern Road Builders Construction Company (a division of APAC) until his retirement in April 1, 1989. At that time he started his own construction company and worked until recent years. Deacon Gross was a member of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Sons of Louisville Lodge #579 for over 38 years, member of Morning Star Society and president of the Fair and Honest Society.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 31, 2008, at 2 p.m. at the Pierce Grove Baptist Church and churchyard cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Sallie Mae Bostic Gross of Wadley; his children, Horace Gross Jr. of Brooklyn, N.Y., Edward (Juanita) Gross of Charleston, S.C., Mamie Ross of Augusta, Imogene Butler of Miami, Fla., Louis (Chloe) Gross of Sumter, S.C., Henry Gross of Wadley, and Patricia Bostic; 16 grandchildren, Lynthia, Cynthia Bostic, Mark White, Monique Gross, Tyler Gross, Contessa Ellis, Christina Gross, Louis Gross Jr., Lauren Gross, Corey Gross, Alicia Gross, Bria Gross, Terry Heggs, Rhonda Heggs, Takisha Heggs and Randall Gross; five great-grandchildren; his brother, Leroy Gross of Wadley; sister-in-law, Cleo Oliver of Wadley; aunt, Robbie Jordan of Wadley; godchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Rev. Dr. Emmett Thomas Martin Jr.
Rev. Dr. Emmett Thomas Martin Jr., of Augusta entered into rest on Thursday, March 27, 2008, at his residence.

Rev. Martin, a native of Augusta, was a 1956 graduate of Lucy Laney High School and a 1960 graduate of Benedict College. In 1997, he received a Master of Divinity from Jacksonville Theological Seminary (Lahairoi Baptist College) and a Doctor of Ministry in 2002 from Lake Charles Bible College, Lake Charles, La. He served as pastor of St. Paul Baptist Church, Louisville, from 1960 to 1972 and as pastor of Historic Springfield Baptist Church from 1972 to the present. His affiliations were the National Baptist Convention, USA, General Missionary Convention of Georgia, former dean and president of the Congress of Christian Education for Walker Baptist Association, vice president of Springfield Village Park Foundation Board of Directors, University Hospital Clergy Staff, Hope Homes Board of Directors, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Rev. Martin taught at A.R. Johnson High School, was former assistant manager of Conger Insurance and former staff member of Pilgrim Health and Life Insurance Company. Numerous honors awarded included Inductee into Morehouse Georgia Board of Reverend Preachers in 1996 and Mayor’s Proclamation declaring Dec. 7, 1996, as E.T. Martin Day in Augusta.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Historic Springfield Baptist Church with Rev. Clyde Hill, Sr. officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Betty R. Martin; one sister, Virginia (James) Barnes, Hephzibah; one brother, Alonza (Mildred) Martin Sr., Augusta; sisters-in-law, Mary (Cluese) Lyons, Josephine Ruffin; nieces, Sandra Thompkins, Jacquelyn Kyler, Annette Barnes, Sandra Johnson; nephews, Alonza L. Martin, Jr., Clarence Ruffin III, Arthur Ruffin, Alphonso Ruffin, Dedrick Gantt, Jean Paul Martin; a special cousin, Rev. Tommie L. Johnson; godchildren, Melissa Sanford, Dr. Olivia Copeland, Allegra Johnson, Jerald Johnson, Moniqwa Jones, Glennis Holmes, Annette Barnes, Alonza Martin Jr.; great-nieces and nephews; cousins; numerous friends and associates along with his church family.

Memorial contributions may be made to Historic Springfield Baptist Church Building Fund.

Funeral services for Mr. Jerold Lynne “Booke-Man” Tucker, 38, of Mitchell were held on Sunday, March 30, 2008, at 2 p.m. at the Fellowship Baptist Church, Mitchell, with the Rev. Louis Neal, officiating. Interment was in Sandy Grove Baptist Church cemetery, Mitchell.

Survivors include three sons, Demetrius Tucker, Jeremy Tucker and Herman Fordham, all of Wrens; a godson, Xavier Brown, Wrens; father, James T. Tucker, Mitchell; a brother, James B. Tucker (Rita), Stockbridge; three sisters, Pamela Cummings, Wrens, Tanya (Troy) Winfrey, Mitchell, and LaTonia Tucker (Ryan), Thomson; grandmother, Agnes Tucker, Mitchell; special friend, Alice Lane, Wrens; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mr. James C. Utley
Mr. James Cleveland Utley, 76, of Wrens departed this life on March 24, 2008, at the VA Hospital in Augusta.

Mr. Utley was born to James and Vandella Utley in Middle Creek, N.C. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and received the National Defense Service Medal during his time of service. He joined the House of God C.O.G.I.C. in 2004 and was a member until his health failed.

Funeral services for Mr. Utley were held on Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at 1 p.m. at The House of God Church of God In Christ, Thomson, with the Bishop Mark Walden, pastor, officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Mildred V. Utley, Wrens; son, Jerry Bradley, Brooklyn, N.Y.; sister, Helen Francois, Brooklyn; brother, Alonza Utley, Brooklyn; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers and sisters-in law and other relatives and friends.

Mr. George Fredrick Arrington
Mr. George Fredrick Arrington, 67, of Harlem entered into rest March 30, 2008, at Doctors Hospital.

He was born in Blythe and served in the United States Army and was retired from Graniteville Mill in Augusta.

Graveside funeral services were held Thursday, April 3, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Moriah cemetery in Matthews, with Rev. Mike Sutphin officiating.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Alice and John Arrington; his brothers, Willard Arrington, Barry Doyle Arrington and John R. “Big John” Arrington.

Survivors include a son, George “Chris” (Rose) Arrington; a granddaughter, Jessica R. Welsted; his former wife, Paulette Arrington of Augusta; a brother, Judson Arrington of Twin Falls, Idaho; numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Eric Mims, Bob Caster, Scott Burke, Keith Arrington, Donald Hancock, Richard Morrison and Jay Dunham.

Donations may be made to the George Arrington Fund in care of the Arrington family.

Mrs. Myrtis Brady
Funeral services for Mrs. Myrtis Brady of Augusta were conducted Thursday, April 3, 2008, at 1 p.m. at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Bobby L. Truitt, pastor, and Rev. Robert L. Williams officiating. Interment was in Cedar Grove Cemetery.

'Mrs. Brady was born to the late Samuel and Annie Mae Williams on Feb. 9, 1920, in Stapleton. She was married to Dock Brady, who preceded her in death. During her later years, she joined Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, where she served on the Missionary Board and sang with the Walkers Baptist Choir.

Survivors include two sons, Deacon Solomon (Johnnie Mae) Franklin, and Samuel Franklin, both of Augusta; two sons-in-law, Porter Evans, Los Angeles, Calif., Walter Singleton, Brooklyn, N.Y.; 23 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Peoples Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
