Mrs. Dorothy Dye Snider
Mrs. Dorothy Dye Snider, 78, of New Ellenton, S.C. entered into rest on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2009, at her home.

Born in Warren County, she had been an area resident for the last 55 years. She was a member of Corinth Baptist Church and retired from Owens-Corning as a quality control inspector after over 25 years of service. Prior to her health declining, she played softball, bowling, quilted and gardened. A former member of the New Ellenton Gardening Club, she had been awarded yard of the month on several occasions.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Millcreek Baptist Church, Mitchell, with Rev. John Bolin officiating.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John L. Snider; parents, Narvis and Georgia Mae Neal Dye; sister, Jane Harper; and one brother.

Survivors include her children, Barry Snider, (Cindy B.) Aiken, S.C., and Dorothy Faye Snider, New Ellenton, S.C.; siblings, Ann Johnson and Linda Toulson, both of Warrenton; grandchildren, Nathan Key, Natalie Hardin, Grayson Barry Snider, Erica B. Lowe, Cameron C. Snider and Clayton C. Snider; and great-grandchildren, Michael Key, Sarah Key, Tyler Hardin and Blake Snider.

The family has asked that memorials in her memory be made to Millcreek Baptist Church.

Hatcher Funeral Home and Cremation Service was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Judson Pilcher Boyd
Mr. Judson Pilcher Boyd, 68, of Augusta entered into rest Friday, Jan. 9, 2009, at his residence.

Mr. Boyd was a native of Jefferson County and the son of the late Furman Hixon and Bernice Evans Boyd. He was also retired from the restaurant business.

Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Chance and Hydrick Funeral Directors, with Dr. Michael Davenport officiating. Interment followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Mr. Boyd was preceded in death by his daughter, Pamela Elizabeth Boyd.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Gibbs-Boyd; sons, Ronald Boyd, Donald Boyd and Tracy Boyd, all of Augusta; his daughter, Angela Boyd of North Augusta; stepchildren, Billy (Beverly) Gibbs, Diane (James) Bruckner and Sabrina Gibbs; his brother, Hugh Boyd of Augusta; his sisters, Glenda Free of Augusta and Gloria Joiner of Gloverville, S.C.; grandchildren, Yolanda, Larry, Nikki, Tim, Andrea, Mike, Will, Heather, Jimbo Jr., and Nathan; and great-grandchildren, Adreanna, Justin, Christian, Baylee, Kaitlyn, Haley, Catherine, Mya and Caleb.

Active pallbearers were Kenny Goodwin, Brian Boyd, James Mills, Tommy Davis and Donald McNair. Honorary pallbearers were Ricky Walker, Calvin Mills, Burl Boatwright, Gary Boatwright and Barry Boatwright.

Chance and Hydrick Funeral Directors were in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Ernest C. Chalker
Mr. Ernest C. Chalker, 74, of Gibson entered into rest Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009, at Select Specialty Hospital, Augusta.

Mr. Chalker was a native of Glascock County and retired from Thermo King Corporation as a machinist.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009, at Sheppard Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. David Jones officiating. Burial was in the Mill Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Mitchell.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sheila Price; brother, Lewis Chalker; and his parents, Cecil and Mattie Landrum Chalker.

Survivors include one son, William Chalker of Waynesboro; and one daughter, Shannon Stokes of Macon; one brother, J.C. Chalker of Sandersville; four sisters, Elizabeth Prescott and Ann Kitchens, both of Gibson, Evelyn Brown of Augusta, and Gladys Hilson of Mitchell; and five grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Dennis May, Joel May, Eddie Usry, Don Hilson, Steven Hilson, Richard Kitchens, David Kitchens, Greg Chalker and Marty Chalker.

Sheppard Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Sara Kitchens Harrell
Mrs. Sara Kitchens Harrell, 87, of Gibson entered into rest Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, at the Keysville Nursing Home, Keysville.

Mrs. Sara was a native of Glascock County. She taught school for 42 years in the Glascock County School System and was a member of Gibson United Methodist Church.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, at the Sheppard Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Greg Glover officiating. Interment was in Mill Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Mitchell.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Mack Harrell.

Survivors include her daughter, Vickie Harrell Clark (Jack) of Hephzibah; two grandchildren, Harrell and Caroline Clark; one sister, Annie Laura Thompson of Augusta; nephew, Ricky Thompson of Augusta; and four granddogs.

Pallbearers were Judson Williams, Jerry Grice, Kim Williams, Dwayne Milburn, Tony Newsome and Bennett Clark.

Memorials may be made to the Hopefull Baptist Church, Building Fund, P.O. Box 132, Hephzibah, GA 30815.

Mr. Dwayne D. Johnson
Funeral services for Mr. Dwayne D. Johnson, 38, Grovetown, were held on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, at 1 p.m. at the Olive Grove Baptist Church, Appling, with the Rev. Dr. Robert F. Leverett, pastor, officiating. Interment was in churchyard cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Tonya Goodwin Johnson, Augusta; mother, Adora Johnson, Grovetown; father, Richard Johnson Sr., Augusta; stepdaughter, Latoria Goodwin, Augusta; stepson, Damion Goodwin, Augusta; two sisters, Dora (Leon) Dorsey, Harlem, and Tygress Hope, Augusta; two brothers, Richard (Tonya) Johnson, Wadley, and Myron Johnson, Grovetown; four aunts, Annie L. Butler, Gladys Butler, both of Grovetown, Cindy Johnson and Mary Helen, both of Augusta; two uncles, Leroy (Mary) Butler and Simmie Johnson, all of Augusta; one grandson; mother-in-law, Maxine Morgan, Augusta; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Thomson Funeral System was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Jones
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Jones, 77, of Augusta entered into rest Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, at Doctors Hospital.

Mrs. Jones was a native of Keysville. She was retired from the Murray Biscuit Company.

Graveside services were held Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009, at 2 p.m. at West View Cemetery, with Rev. Charlie DeLoach officiating.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold C. Jones.

Survivors include her daughters, Dianne (Colden) Storey of Grovetown; Judy (Cecil) Mays of Keysville; sisters, Dorothy Gowers of Augusta, Virginia Fulcher of Hephzibah; brothers, Leonard Howard Jr. of Wrens, James Howard of Jemison, Ala., and Frank Howard of Matthews; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the MCG Children’s Miracle network, 1120 15th St., Room BA 8270, Augusta, GA 30912 ATTN: Development Office.

Mrs. Florene Lane Mock
Mrs. Florene Lane Mock, 89, of Augusta entered into rest Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, at Heartland Hospice.

Mrs. Mock was a native of Bamberg County, S.C. and had resided in Augusta for the past 65 years. She was a store manager with Baxter Clothing and had been an active member of Pine Hill Baptist Church in Hephzibah where she taught Sunday School and the G.A.’s and was a member of the WMU.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Pine Hill Baptist Church, with Dr. Robert Driggers and Rev. J.D. Turner officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ward Randolph Mock Sr.; parents, Lewis H. and Fairy Bell Lane; grandchild, Tracy McGahee; brothers, Lewis (June) Lane Jr., J.C. Lane and Richard Lane.

Survivors include include her daughters, Bonnie (Harry) McGahee of Augusta, Judy (Herman) Kersey of Hephzibah, and Sue Ann Mock of Augusta; sons, Robert “Red” Mock of Wrens, and Ward “Randy” Mock of Sandy Springs; grandchildren, Jeffery McGahee, Richard Kersey, Crystal Kersey Cotrell, Teresa Mock, Nick Mock, Ryan Mock and Jeffery Melton Jr.; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Rosier of Evans, and Louise Britt of Augusta.

Pallbearers were Bobby Salter Sr., Bobby Salter Jr., Jimmy Miller, Louis Schlein, J. Mark Melton Sr., James (Billy) Cawley Sr. and Eric Schlein.

Memorials may be made to St. John Towers, 724 Greene St., Augusta, GA 30901.

Mr. George McDuffie Upton
Mr. George McDuffie Upton, 81, McDonough entered into rest on Jan. 11, 2009.

Mr. Upton was born in Jefferson, the son of the late Roxie Lamar and Thatcher Upton. He was one of 14 children and was preceded in death by several siblings. Mr. Upton worked as an operator and engineer for Capital Construction for 30 plus years and was a member of the Operator/Engineer Local Union #926. He was a member of Pinecrest Baptist Church for 41 years. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict for two years.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Haisten Funeral Home, with Pastor Roy Mack officiating. Entombment was at Haisten/Eastlawn Memorial Park in McDonough.

Survivors include his wife of more than 50 years, Betty Upton of McDounough; daughters, Regina (Art) Krytus of Forsyth, Marianne (Fred) Land of Hampton, and Susan Upton of Forsyth; grandchildren, Heather Shortt, Tiffany Shortt, Nicholas Williams, Cody Land and Hunter Land; great-grandchildren, Taylor Shortt, Blaklee Shortt and Jordon Williams; sisters, Helen Tanajewski of Swainsboro and Jean Baird of Rome; brother, Stanley Upton of Wadley; numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pinecrest Baptist Church Bldg. Fund, 175 Foster Dr., McDonough, GA 30253.

Minister Mamie Louise Cooper Allen
Minister Mamie Louise Cooper Allen of Atlanta entered into rest on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009, in Atlanta.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, at Flat Rock Baptist Church, Matthews, with Rev. W.L. Cottrell officiating and assisted by Pastor R.G. Dent. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Allen Huff, Atlanta, and Deborah Allen (Charles) Turner, Fountain, Colo.; a sister, Julia Cooper Harris, Washington, D.C.; four grandchildren, Pierce William (Rhonda) Huff, Harvey, La., Mamie Michelle Turner, Charles Turner Jr., and Devon Turner, Fountain, Colo.; two great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers were deacons and trustees of Flat Rock Baptist Church.

Hudson Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Rev. Rufus Burch Beckum
Rev. Rufus Burch Beckum, 92, of Louisville entered into rest on Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, in the Jefferson County Hospital after a lengthy illness.

A native of Louisville, Rev. Beckum was a son of the late Robert Burch and Sally Mae Mullings Beckum. He had pastored several Methodist churches throughout southeast Georgia and had served as District Lay Leader, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday school teacher and was former Director of Methodist Youth Fellowship. He was a member of Louisville United Methodist Church and retired after many years of service as a furniture salesman.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, in the Louisville United Methodist Church, with Rev. Ronnie Register and Rev. David Hibberts officiating. Burial was in the Louisville City Cemetery.

Rev. Beckum was preceded in death by his parents; and seven siblings, Nellie B. Henderson, Eula B. Kitchens, Leonard Beckum, Darley Beckum, Sam Beckum, Bascom Beckum and William Beckum.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Florine Willing Beckum of Louisville; daughter, Linda (Don) Allen of Louisville; sons, Gerald (Linda) Beckum of Oglethorpe, Rev. Robert (Mary Pat) Beckum of Americus; sister, Emily B. Mogan of Louisville; two grandsons; two granddaughters; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers those desiring make contributions to the Louisville United Methodist Church at 309 West 7th Street, Louisville, GA 30434.

Ms. Cherry Ann Cunningham
Ms. Cherry Ann Cunningham, 54, of Louisville entered into rest on Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009, at University Hospital in Augusta.

Ms. Cunningham was native of Jefferson County, daughter of the late Eugene and Jannie Mae Oliphant Cunningham. She was a member of Lofton AME Church and a 1972 graduate of Louisville High School.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, at Lofton AME Church in Wrens, with Rev. Michael Ephraim officiating. Interment was in the Spring Bethel Society Cemetery.

Survivors include her siblings, Mariah Cunningham, Eugene (Florence) Cunningham and Fredrick Jerome (Joyce) Cunningham, all of Louisville, and Calvin (Teresa) Cunningham of Wrens; aunts and uncles, Cressie (Tom) Hill and Alberta Loyd, both of Louisville, Mamie Brooks of Dania, Fla., Willie (Rethea Mae) Oliphant, Joe Louise Oliphant, Lola (Dwellie) Lane and Charlie (Mary) Oliphant, all of Stapleton, Johnny West Oliphant of Pompano Beach, Fla., and Fannie (Nathaniel) Brown of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; devoted nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

Honorary pallbearers were Stewards and Trustees of Lofton AME Church.

Active pallbearers were James Williams Jr., Roosevelt Alexander Jr., Calvin Cunningham Jr., Ronnie Neal, Stanley Brown and Frankie Boyd.

Mrs. Mary K. Fort of Davisboro entered into rest on Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009, at the Heritage of Old Capitol Nursing Home, Louisville.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Neeler African Methodist Episcopal Church, Davisboro, with Rev. Minnie Davis officiating. Interment was in church cemetery.
