Mrs. Ella Mae Sheffield of Wadley entered into rest Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009.

Funeral services were held at noon on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009, at the Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Louisville.

Survivors include one sister, Lula Mae VanDyke of Wadley.

Garrer Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Infant Alexis Rae Story
Infant Alexis Rae Story entered into rest on Friday, Feb. 27, 2009.

She was born on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 2, 2009, at Ft. Creek Baptist Church, with Dr. Phil Bray officiating. Interment followed in the May Family Cemetery.

Survivors include her parents, Brad and Lisa Martin Story, Warrenton; paternal grandparents, Benny and Brenda Story, Warrenton; maternal grandparents, Jim and Julianne Martin, Thomson; paternal great-grandparent, Carolyn Padgett, Warrenton, the late Gordon Story and the late Grace Story; maternal great-grandparents, Leon and Shirley May, Thomson, Doris Inglett and the late Roy Inglett, Thomson; uncles and aunts, Chris and Kristi Johns, Dearing, Andrew and Sarah Duckworth, Lincolnton, David and Candy Welch, Boneville, and Larry Story, Mitchell; and numerous cousins.

Pallbearers were Andrew Duckworth, Chris Johns, David Welch and Larry Story.

Honorary pallbearers were Colby Welch and Cole Johns.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the NICU Unit at the University Hospital c/o 2100 Central Ave., Suite D-1 Augusta, GA 30904.

Beggs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Flora Hanes Twiley
Mrs. Flora Haynes Twilley, 91, of Warrenton entered into rest on Sunday, March 1, 2009, at the McDuffie Regional Medical Center.

She was a retired school teacher and was the first music teacher at the school in Wrens from 1938-1940. She was the wife of the late Mr. Clarence Ivey Twilley Jr.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at the First United Methodist Church of Warrenton, with Dr. Henry Fields officiating. Burial followed in the Camak United Methodist Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church of Warrenton, 412 Main Street Warrenton, GA 30828.

Dr. Deno G. Thevaos
Dr. Deno G. Thevaos, 89, of State College, Pa. entered into rest on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009, at the Atrium of the Village at Penn State, State College, Pa.

Born in Augusta on July 8, 1919, son of George T. and Helen Antonopoulos Thevaos, he was a member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Augusta, attended Davidson, then Houghton Elementary schools, the Academy of Richmond County and the Junior College of Augusta, now Augusta State University, before attending and receiving a bachelor of arts degree from Emory University. He served as principal, teacher and basketball coach at Bartow High School for two years prior to World War II, in which he served in the U.S. Army - Air Corps. Following Honorable Discharge, he taught at the Oak Ridge High School in Tennessee for two years. After completing work for his masters and doctorate degrees from Teachers College, Columbia University, he embarked on his teaching career at Penn State. There he was listed among the school’s master teachers after receiving the Lindback-Eisenhower Award for Distinguished Teaching. He also received a certificate from Phi Delta Kappa, from Kiwanis Civic Clubs he received the Kiwanis

Legion of Honor, and from the Torch Club, the Silver Torch Award for Outstanding Service. He served on the Centre County Youth Service Board, was active in the Special Olympics Program and was a long time member of the YMCA. He retired after 40 years of teaching.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, at the Holy Trinity Orthodox Church, with Father John Reeves officiating. Interment was at Graysville Cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Theola Floore Thevaos.

Survivors include his brother, Dr. Theo G. Thevaos (Artemisia) of Augusta; his nephew, Dr. G. Philip Thevaos (Celia); great-niece, Mary Emma of Waxhaw, N.C.; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were George E. Cheros, Wayne Coil and G. Philip Thevaos.

Honorary pallbearers were fellow faculty and staff at Penn State University, members of Kiwanis and Torch Clubs and the staff from the Atrium.

If so desired memorials may be made to the Department of Education and Psychology at Augusta State University, Penn State University, or to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Augusta.

Mr. Leon Booker Jr.
Mr. Leon Booker Jr. of Augusta entered into rest on Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009, at Gibson Rehab and Health Center.

He was a native of Richmond County.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Williams Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Cedar Grove Cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Theodora D. Booker.

Survivors are his father, Leon (Helen) Booker Sr.; friend, Brenda Wright; daughter, Monique Rose; sons, Leon Booker III and JaQuan Booker, Augusta; granddaughter, Kaitlyn Coleman, Augusta; stepchildren, Rafiel Brooks, Charleston, S.C., Dominique Fernandez and Danielle Fernandez, Columbia, S.C.; brother, Bobby (Gladys) Ferris, Los Angeles, Calif.; sisters, April (Herbert) Gordon, Deborah Booker and Linda Booker, Houston, Texas; uncles, Henry (Juana) Darlington Jr., Huntsville, Ala. and Willie Johnson, Atlanta; cousin, Reggie (Jeanette) Johnson, Yolanda (Bryant) Allen, Mableton, Marque (Robin) Darlington, Newman, Carla (Jeffery) Hairston, Douglasville, and Kimberly Butler, Fayetteville; godson, Marcus Bowder; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Williams Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hugh Dawson
Hugh Dawson, 81, of Kite entered into rest on Thursday, March 5, 2009, at the Doctor’s Hospital in Augusta, after a brief illness.

Mr. Dawson was a native of Jefferson County and was retired from Ryder Truck Rentals. He was a member of the Kite First Baptist Church and was a Deacon.

Funeral services were on Saturday, March 7, 2099, at 2 p.m. in the Kite First Baptist Church, with Rev. Casey Shaw and Rev. Burton Dixon officiating. Interment was in the Kite City cemetery in Kite.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Beulah Braddock Dawson

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Anderson Dawson of Kite; four daughters, Dianne (Rev. Larry) Martin of Kite, Deborah D. (James) Jarriel of Augusta, Phyllis Roberts and Karen King, both of Augusta; one son, William Dawson of Augusta; three sisters, Dolly (Herschel) Waits of Louisville, Sarah Fannin of Augusta, and Rebecca Higdon of Greensboro; one brother, Earl (Margaret) Dawson of Hephzibah; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were the men of the Kite First Baptist Church.

Durden-Hudson Funeral Directors was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. William M. Ganus Jr.
Mr. William M. Ganus Jr., 58, of Stapleton entered into rest on Thursday, March 5, 2009, at Doctors Hospital.

Mr. Ganus was a former employee for Clear Water Finishing Plant and was a member of Word Aflame Tabernacle. He was the son of the late William M. Ganus Sr. and Neva Mae Brooks Ganus.

Funeral services were held at James Funeral Home Chapel on Monday, March 9, 2009, at 3 p.m., with Rev. Ben Bush officiating. Interment followed in Wrens Memorial Garden.

Survivors include his three sisters, Ethel Dorine Paulus, Lavonia Elaine Newsome and Joyce Anne Ganus; and a brother, Thomas Ray Brooks; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Dallas Bush, Allen Chavous, Isaiah Newsome, Preston Calhoun, Brain Simmons, Chris Paulus, Stephen Paulus and David Paulus.

James Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Sallie Mae Jackson Johnson
Mrs. Sallie Mae Jackson Johnson, 94, of Wadley entered into rest on Saturday, March 7, 2009, at Glendale Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 14, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the New Fleming Baptist Church and cemetery, with the pastor, Rev. Cedric L. Cason officiating.

Mrs. Johnson was a native of Washington County, but lived in Jefferson County all of her adult life. She was the daughter of the late Sam and Lettie Thompson Jackson and the widow on the late Nathaniel “Shang” Johnson. She was a member of the New Fleming Baptist Church where she served as mother of the church and Missionary Board for many years.

Survivors include her children, Mattie “Maggie” Bell Palmer of Wadley, Joyce (Otis) Mason of Conneticutt, Eddie (Doris) Palmer, Willie James (Joan) Palmer, T. J. (Constance) Palmer, Fred (Velma) Palmer all of New York., Willie Albert (Shirley) Palmer of Dale City, Va.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Family maybe contacted at the residence 229 Stevens Street, Wadley, or at Davis Funeral Home, Louisville.

Mrs. Eva Pinkston
Mrs. Eva Pinkston of Sandersville entered into rest on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009, at Oconee Nursing Home, Oconee.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, March 8, 2009, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul CME Church, Mitchell, with Rev. Gene R. Dean officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

M.C. Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Mary Patsy Reese
Mrs. Mary Patsy Reese, 57, entered into rest on Thursday, March 5, 2009, in the McDuffie Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Reese was a native of Richmond County and had made her home in Thomson before moving to Gibson. She was a retired teacher. She was a member of Thomson First Baptist Church and also attended Gibson First Baptist Church.

Funeral services were at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 8, 2009, in the Curtis Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. James Ramsey officiating. Burial was in the Westview Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Reese.

Survivors include her four sisters, Rita (Miguel) Faure, Appling, Gloria (Brian) Machalk, Louisville, Kathy (David) Gunnels, Wrens, and Tonya (Robert) Gunby, Louisville; a stepdaughter, Karen Reese, Florida; a stepson, Kendel (Cristie) Reese, Atlanta; her father, Bobby H. (Regina) McGahee, Thomson; her aunt, Juanita Wellmaker, Gibson; her uncle, Gene McGahee, Columbus; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Brian Machalk, Cody Machalk, Ronnie Marchman, Kendel Reese, Vic Reese and Matthew Holley.

Curtis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Robert Morris “Bobby” Thompson Sr.
Mr. Robert Morris “Bobby” Thompson Sr., 56, of Wadley entered into rest on Monday, March 3, 2009.

Mr. Thompson was a native of Jefferson County, the son of the late Thomas Thompson Sr. and Nina Hicks Thompson, and a member of the Salter Grove Baptist Church before moving to New York in 1968. He worked for the New York City Transit Department as a conductor. He returned to Jefferson County to live in 1995.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2009, at Salter Grove Baptist Church and Cemetery.

Survivors include his children, Tennille (Nigel) Thompson-Coombs and Tiffanie Thompson, both of Upper Marlboro, Md., Robert Thompson Jr., Julian Thompson and Talisa Thompson all of Coral Ridge, Fla.; his sister, Annie Doris Thompson of Bartow; brothers, Thomas (Verdell) Thompson Jr., George (Diane) Thompson, both of Long Island, N.Y., Sammy Lee (Vickie) Thompson and Johnny Albert Thompson, both of New York, N.Y., and Eugene (Dora) Jackson of Bartow; five grandchildren, Tatiana Thompson, Corey Thompson, Julian Thompson, Zayvin Thompson, Amirah Coombs and Shari Coombs; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Mr. George E. Arrington
Mr. George E. Arrington, 78, of Wrens entered into rest on Sunday, March 8, 2009, at Trinity Hospital.

Funeral services were held at James Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, March 10, 2009, at 3 p.m., with Rev. Ed Chance officiating. Graveside services were held in Laurel, Miss. at Sharon cemetery on Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at 3 p.m.

Mr. Arrington was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Lampkin Arrington; his son, James Clayton Lampkin; and grandson, Perry Grant Kelly.

Survivors include his son, Jackie L. Arrington Fayetteville, Tenn.; a daughter, Sherry (Grant) Kelly, Laurel, Miss.; two grandsons, Christopher Arrington and James Thomas Lampkin; granddaughter, Daphne Manning; and four great-granddaughters.

James Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Edgar Brooks
Mr. Edgar Brooks, 86, of Gibson entered into rest on Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at the Warrenton Health and Rehabilitation Center, Warrenton.

Mr. Brooks was a native of Jefferson County, and was retired from Georgia-Tennessee Mining Company, Wrens.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2009, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Avera, with Rev. Bill Seaman officiating.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wesley and Berta Hadden Brooks; four brothers, Edward, Oliver, Howard and Homer Brooks; two sisters, Katie Lou Denton and Martha Brooks Malaczewski.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Helen Whitehead Brooks; two daughters, Julia (Jerry) Brooks Stevenson of Warrenton, and Barbara Brooks Bazemore of Gibson; one brother, George Brooks of Gibson; one sister, Marie Dixon of Stapleton; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Glascock County Concerned Citizens c/o Mrs. Corene Chalker, 3037 Bastonville Rd., Gibson, GA 30810.
