Mr. Gene Arthur Stone
Mr. Gene Arthur Stone, 65, entered into rest on Friday, March 6, 2009, at his residence.
Mr. Stone was born to the late Mr. J.C. Stone and Carrie Bell-Hannah on Oct. 3, 1943 in Jefferson County. He was a truck driver for over 30 years in Jersey City, N.J. and Charlotte, N.C. He was also a mason for 12 years until his illness. After moving to Charlotte, N.C. he joined New Covenant AME Church where he was a Trustee and a member of King’s Men Male Chorus.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 14, 2009, at New Covenant AME Church.
He was preceded in death by both parents; and a sister, Bertha Rawls.
Survivors include his companion of 20 years, Mariam Hardy; six children, Sharon Stone of North Carolina, Regina, Gene Jr., Qhresa, Sharsheka and LaShayla Stone all of New Jersey; one brother, Jason Stone; one sister, Frances Stone all of New Jersey; grandchildren, Tyrone, Gianna, Thomas and Sabia; adopted mother, Ardel King of New Jersey; one sister-in-law, Marcella Williams; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Mrs. Lula Pearl Seabrook Wright
Mrs. Lula Pearl Seabrook Wright, 76, of Augusta entered into rest on March 13, 2009, at University Hospital.
Mrs. Wright was born in Jefferson County to the late John Ermon Seabrook and Eva Chinn Seabrook on October 24, 1932.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 19, 2009, at 1 p.m. at the New Zion Baptist Church, Wrens, with the Pastor Rev. Dr. W. L. Jones officiating. Interment was in Sugar Hill Cemetery
Survivors include two sons, Johnny Bernard (Vertis) Seabrook of Augusta, and Quincy Channing Wright of Augsburg, Germany; a niece, Connie (Andrew) Tillman; three sisters, Clara Brown of Wrens, Lillian Rouse of Augusta, and Alavan Ross of Miami, Fla.; two brothers, Willie Lee (Martha) Seabrook of Miramar, Fla., and Johnny Edward (Rosalyn) Seabrook of Tampa, Fla.; one sister-in-law, Leila Seabrook of Wrens; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews, great-nieces and -nephews, great-great-niece and -nephews, cousins, adopted sons and daughters, adopted nieces and nephews, and friends.

Mrs. Olive Janette Yelton
Mrs. Olive Janette Yelton, 78, of Appling entered into rest on Sunday, March 15, 2009, at Heartland Hospice, Augusta.
Mrs. Yelton was a native of Warren County. She was a retired piano teacher and homemaker. Mrs. Yelton was also a student at Wrens High School, where she took music lessons from Mrs. J.A. Prescott.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at Believer’s Gospel Chapel, Augusta, with Rev. Sam Thorpe and Rev. Dan White officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
She was preceded in death by her husband, E. C. Yelton Sr.; and her parents, Cheatham and Coree Johnson.
Survivors include three sons, Eddie C. Yelton Jr., John ‘Lee’ (Francis) Yelton and Dan Johnson (Frances) Yelton, all of Appling; one daughter, Donna (Sammy) Y. Groover, Appling; one brother, Tyrus Johnson of Kentucky; and 14 grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Sam Groover, Adam Yelton, Pete Knox, Phillip Knox, Cecil Bullard and Daryl Bullard.

Mr. Alonzie Young of Warrenton entered into rest on Sunday, March 15, 2009, at Heartland, Augusta.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 21, 2009, at 1 p.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church, Warrenton, with Rev. Dr. John A. Lockhart, pastor, officiating.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ruth Young; four sons, Tony Young, Warrenton, Willie Kim Young, Stapleton, David Young, Augusta, and Dennie Young, Queens, N.Y.; two daughters, Juliet Hampton, Harlem, and Connie Gross, Sparta; nine grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; three brothers; five sisters; two aunts; one uncle; other relatives and friends.

Judge Quillian L. Bryant Jr.
Judge Quillian L. Bryant Jr., 79, Louisville entered into rest on Wednesday, March 25, 2009, in Doctors Hospital in Augusta.
Judge Bryant was a lifelong resident of Louisville, a son of the late Quillian L. and Louise Smith Bryant Sr. He was a 1946 graduate of Louisville Academy. He attended Georgia Southern, formerly Teacher’s College, and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1956 with a law degree. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and had worked for the TVA. He was Jefferson County Probate Judge for 48 years and a member of the American Legion, the County Officers Association of Georgia, the State Bar of Georgia, Council of Probate Judges and a lifelong member of the Louisville United Methodist Church.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 28, 2009, at Louisville United Methodist Church, with Rev. David Hibberts and Rev. Beau Taylor officiating. Burial followed in the Louisville City Cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Holliday Bryant of Louisville; son, Dana Jones of Athens; daughter, Stacey (John) Hughes of Decatur; stepdaughter, Jan Waters of Pensacola, Fla.; two grandchildren, Eleanor Hughes and Jack Hughes, both of Decatur; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Page and Prescott Bowden of Grayson; nephews, Scott (Michelle) Bowden, and Bud (Melanie) Bowden; great-nieces, Kayanna Bowden, Mindy Bowden, Haley Bowden and Josie Bowden; great-nephews, Dobbs Bowden and Robbie Bowden.

Mr. Linzie Heath
Mr. Linzie Heath, 83, entered into rest on Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at Strong Hospital in Rochester, N.Y.
Mr. Heath was a native of Jefferson County, the son of the late Lafayette and Leva Atkins Heath, attended Jefferson County Training School, a member of the Pierce Grove Baptist Church for many years where he ushered and sang in the choir. He was honorably discharged as Seaman Second Class with the U.S. Navy in March 1946, and later retired from Fort Gordon as a bus driver.
Funeral services were held Sunday, March 29, 2009, at 1 p.m. at Pierce Grove Baptist Church and Society Cemetery, Louisville.
Survivors include his children, Eddie Morris Heath of Washington, Dennis Heath of Colorado Spring, Colo., Dennis (Mary) Stevens of Miami, Fla., Helen “Faye” Heath of Rochester, N.Y., Veronica “Bonnie” Heath of Augusta, Michael (Christine) Heath of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Timothy Heath of Atlanta; siblings, Jimmie Heath of Louisville, and Vivian Jones of Rochester, N.Y.; 22 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; aunts, Essie Mae Stevens and Mattie Hannah, both of Wadley; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, George (Roberta) Hatcher of Augusta, Roosevelt (Inez) Williams of Louisville, Emma (Clarence) Brookins, Philadelphia, Pa., Juanita Evans of Miami, Fla.; and a host of nieces, nephews cousins and friends.

Mr. Kenneth Kitchens
Mr. Kenneth Kitchens, 68, of Thomson entered into rest on Tuesday, March 24, 2009, at his residence.
Mr. Kitchens was a native of Glascock County, but had lived in Thomson for many years. He was retired from the Knox-Rivers Construction Company. He was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church, where he was a Deacon and a member of the Mildred Russell Sunday School Class.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 26, 2009, in Pine Grove Baptist Church, with Rev. Butch Baston and Rev. Steve Stokes officiating. Burial was in Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Krysta Kitchens Moore; and his son, Ken Kitchens.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Kitchens, Thomson; his daughter, Tammy K. (Lewis) Smith, Thomson; a son-in-law, Ray Moore, Crawford; six grandchildren, Daniel Dean, Toni Dean, Krysta Dean, Callee Smith, Colby Moore, and Hannah Moore; a brother, Ernest Kitchens, Wrens; and two sisters, Agnes Hobbs, Wrens, and Janell Clarke, Dearing.
Pallbearers were Lanny Hightower, Billy Hollis, Larron English, Jimmy McDaniel, Jimmy Rivers, Larry Peterson and Ricky Luke.

Mrs. Dessie Usry Newsome
Mrs. Dessie Usry Newsome, 97, of Warrenton entered into rest on Monday, March 23, 2009, at the Warrenton Health and Rehab Center.
Mrs. Newsome, a native of Glascock County, was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Usry. She was a homemaker and a member of Magnolia Baptist Church.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at the Magnolia Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Alex Williams officiating.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Colquitt Newsome.
Survivors include one brother, Ray Usry, Grovetown; and one sister, Blanche Usry, Gibson.

Mr. Lee R. Perdue III
Mr. Lee R. Perdue III, 68, of Commerce entered into rest on Saturday, March 28, 2009, at St. Mary’s Hospice House.
Mr. Perdue was born on Sept. 28, 1940, in Wrens to the late Lee Roy and Nelle B. Perdue. He graduated from Wrens High School and attended DeKalb College, Georgia State University, and graduated cum laude from Mercer University College of Pharmacy. He worked as a pharmacist around the Atlanta and Athens areas, worked briefly at Horton Homes, and raised cattle. Mr. Perdue was a veteran, having served in the United States Army 537th Engineer Company, 30th Battalion Topographical Survey Unit Fort Belvoir, Va., from March 1962-April 1964. He was a member of ARP Presbyterian Church in Wrens.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 30, 2009, at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, with the Rev. Paul Vickery officiating. Graveside services were held Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Wrens Memorial cemetery in Wrens.
Mr. Perdue was preceded in death by a nephew, Timothy Evans.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Janice R. Perdue, Commerce; sister, Frances P. Evans, Richardson, Texas; and nephew, Gary C. Evans, Flowers Mound, Texas.

Mrs. Rosie Mae Rabun
Mrs. Rosie Mae Rabun, 85, of Louisville entered into rest on Thursday, March 26, 2009, in the Glendale Nursing Home in Wadley.
A native of Jefferson County, Mrs. Rabun was a daughter of the late Walter Clarence and Liza Roseanna Williford Gibson. She was a homemaker and a member of Old Bethel Baptist Church in Bartow.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 29, 2009, graveside in the Louisville City Cemetery, with Rev. Randy Mimbs officiating.
Mrs. Rabun was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Frances Purvis; two husbands, Wilbert Scarboro and White C. Rabun; two sisters, Lucille Moxley and Beatrice Martin.
Survivors include a daughter, Joann Brantley of Kite; and sister, Julia Beasley of Savannah.

Ms. Joyce Young Shelby
Ms. Joyce Young Shelby, 62, of New York, N.Y. entered into rest on Thursday, March 19, 2009, in New York.
She was a native of Augusta, born to the late Rev. N.T. Young Sr. and Prudence Young. She was a 1964 graduate of Boggs Academy, received a bachelor’s degree in English from Spelman College and a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University and was a news reporter for the New York Daily Times. She was a former member of Thankful Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 26, 2009, at 7 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, New York. Burial was at Rosedale Cemetery, Linden, N.J.

Mrs. Martha B. Story, 89, of Augusta entered into rest on Thursday, March 26, 2009.
Mrs. Story was the wife of the late William Glenn Story Sr. She was a native of Glascock County and had resided in Augusta for the past 59 years. She was a homemaker and a member of Bayvale Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 30, 2009, at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet and Son, with Rev. Charlie DeLoach officiating. Interment followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Survivors include her sons, William G. Story Jr. of Augusta and Ray (Rhetta) Story of Martinez; daughter, June S. (Earl) Collins of Augusta; sister, Nell Williford of Augusta; and grandchildren, Tyler Story and Jonah Story, both of Martinez.
