Mrs. Peggy Louise Thorne
Mrs. Peggy Louise Thorne, 71, of Louisville entered into rest on Wednesday, March 25, 2009, in the University Hospital in Augusta.
Services will be private.
Mrs. Thorne was a native of Reynolds, Mo., a daughter of the late Doyle Louis and Wilma Pauline Patterson Fitzgerald. She was a retired paralegal, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her father; and a granddaughter, Kristina “Sissy” Stevens.
Survivors include her husband, Richard Eugene Thorne of Louisville; mother, Wilma Pauline Langof; sons, Ted Virgil Thorne (Dawn), Richard James Thorne and Scott Allen Thorne; daughters, Sheri Lee (Dave Edward) Stevens, Cynthia Lynn (Steven Blaise) Boudreaux; brothers, Stanley Gant, Charles Gant, Billy Gant and Danny Gant; sister, Molly White; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Maggie Hall Tilson of Midville entered into rest on Sunday, March 22, 2009, in Wadley.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 26, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Roberson Grove Baptist Church in Midville, with Pastor Gaines officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include one sister, Gerturde Baker, Savannah; a niece, Dorothy Lassiter, Greensboro, N.C.; a sister-in-law, Helen Lassiter, Charlotte, N.C.; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.

Mrs. Maggie Mae Heggs Burton, 78, of Louisville entered into rest on Wednesday, April 1, 2009.
Mrs. Burton is the daughter of the late Sallie Heggs Brown and Jim Kelly. She was a member of the Hardeman Springfield Baptist Church where she was a member of the Usher Board and the Zion Wheels Society. She received her education in the public school system of Jefferson County. She found employment as a cook with the Jefferson County School System and worked in housekeeping.
Funeral Services were held on Sunday, April 5, 2009, at 3 p.m. at the Hardeman Springfield Baptist Church and Cemetery, Louisville, with the Rev. Cecil Dunlap officiating.
She is preceded in death by one daughter, Ellen Lou Burton.
Survivors include her husband, Ed Willie Burton; children, Jimmy Brown Heggs of Carrolton, Earl Kelly of Sylvester, Mark (Alberta) Heggs of Louisville, Alberta (Gregory) Hickson of Wadley, Arthur (Kimberly) Burton and Patricia Burton, both of Louisville, Eddie Bernard Burton of Wadley, and Dorothy (Willie B.) Burton of Louisville; four stepchildren: Glennis Hilton and Judy Reese, both of Louisville, Theodore Hilton of Augusta, and Tony Brown of Florida; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Nancy Thompson, Cora Hilton, Lorene Burton, Dorothy (Willie B.) Walden, Willie Burton, all of Louisville, and Evelyn Burton of Puerto Rico; 31 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Rev. Walter Scott McCleskey
Rev. Walter Scott McCleskey, 88, entered into rest on March 19, 2009, at his home.
He was a native of Marietta, born on Jan. 17, 1921, and lived in Fort Pierce, Fla. for four years, coming from Cleveland, Tenn. Before retirement, he was a Methodist minister. He served the Wrens Church in June 1960-June 1961. He retired from the South Georgia Conference. He served as a chaplain with the Army for eight years. He was a member and past president of Rotary International, a Paul Harris fellow and recipient of Rotary’s Will Watts Award. He was a member of the American Legion and the Sons of the American Revolution.
A service was held at 2 p.m. on March 22, 2009, at the Collins Funeral Home in Acworth. Burial follow in the Marietta City cemetery in Georgia. A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. on March 29, 2009, in the chapel of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Fort Pierce, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Emily Woodall McCleskey; son, Walter Scott McCleskey Jr.; and brother, Clinton Leroy McCleskey Jr.
Survivors include his daughters, Catherine “Cathy” Oliver of Fort Pierce, Fla., and Margaret Smith of Cleveland, Fla.; and eight grandchildren.

Mr. Larry Walden Stephens
Mr. Larry Walden Stephens of Augusta entered into rest on Friday, April 3, 2009, at University Hospital.
Mr. Stephens, a native of Glascock County, lived in New York, was a member of NY Painters Union 806, and later moved back to Augusta. He was a bridge painter.
Memorial services were conducted at Grace Fellowship Church North Augusta, S.C., on Monday, April 6, 2009, at 7 p.m., with Rev. Phillip Hamilton officiating. Mr. Stephens was cremated.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Whitaker Stephens; four sons, Kenneth W. Stephens, Devin C. Stephens, NASC, Daniel E. Stephens, all of Evans, and Christopher L. Stephens, Augusta; one daughter, Donna A. Smith, Martinez; one brother, Billy Earl Stephens, Augusta; one sister, Janis F. Moffre, Cohoes, N.Y.; and 12 grandchildren.

Mr. Sammie Kenneth Story, 66, of Griffin entered into rest on Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at his residence.
Mr. Story, a native of Gibson, was a brick mason.

Rev. Lucille B. Booker
Rev. Lucille B. Booker of Augusta entered into rest on Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at Trinity Hospital of Augusta.
Rev. Booker was a native of Augusta. She served in the United States Army Medical Core and received an honorable discharge. She also was a retired nurse from the Veterans Administration Hospital. She was a graduate of the Lucy C. Laney class of 1952-1953 where she has served as class secretary until her death. She was a member of the Cumming Grove Baptist Church for over 27 years were she served as the assistant pastor and superintendent of the Sunday school.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at the Cumming Grove Baptist Church, with Rev. Nathaniel Irvin officiating. Internment followed at Mount Olive Memorial Gardens.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Deacon Jerry A Booker Jr.; and her parents, Deacon Dave and Sally M. Bussey.

Mrs. Gertrude Toots Carswell
Mrs. Gertrude Toots Carswell entered into rest on April 3, 2009, at Doctor’s Hospital in Augusta.
Mrs. Carswell was born in Jefferson County to the late John Toots and Daisy Bells. She was educated in the school systems of Jefferson and Emanuel counties. She joined Limestone Baptist Church at an early age and served until her family moved to Cross-Green Community where she joined with Ada Grove Holiness Church. She was employed at Sportswear Manufacturing in Swainsboro and was also self-employed as a seamstress, quilter and cook.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 11, 2009, at Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Cross-Green Community, with Rev. Richard Lawrence officiating.
She was preceded in death by her parents; grandmother, Annie Bell Lamb; husband, Eddie Lee Carswell; and five children, Annie Daisy, Otis, Willie James, Eddie Jean and Willie Albert.
Survivors include 10 sons, Eddie Lee Carswell Jr. (Charlett) of Long Beach, Calif., Robert J. Carswell (Linda), David Carswell (Joann), Alfonzia Carswell and Jimmy Carswell, all of Tampa, Fla., Roger Lee Carswell (Rebecca), Elijah Carswell, Samuel Carswell and Ellie Carswell, all of Midville, and Randy Carswell; three daughters, Alfredia Levine of Tampa, Fla., Gertrude Delois Phillips (Wilbert), and Elizabeth Carswell, all of Swainsboro; 68 grandchildren, 120 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grandchildren; three brothers-in-law; five sisters-in-law; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Curtis Lee Clay Jr., 55, of Louisville, formerly of Fredericksburg, Va., entered into rest on Friday, March 3, 2009, at his residence.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
A native of Fredericksburg, Va., Mr. Clay was a son of the late Curtis Lee and Mary Purks Clay. He raised pigeons. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include a sister, Connie Clay Hodges (James) of Glenn Allen, Va.; a brother, Charles Calvin Clay of Fredericksburg, Va.; niece Brittany Clay; and two nephews, Zachary Clay and Maverick Clay.

Rev. Henry J. Gambrell
Rev. Henry J. Gambrell, 90, of McCormick, S.C. entered into rest on Monday, April 6, 2009, at Hospice Care of Greenwood, S.C.
Born in Honea Path, S.C., he was the youngest of 10 children, born to Della Ricketts Gambrell and William Mack Gambrell. He was a graduate of Furman University and Erskine Theological Seminary. He pastored churches at Camp Creek, S.C., Enoree, S.C., Abbeville, S.C., Louisville, McCormick, S.C., and Troy Baptist Church in South Carolina. He was a 60 year Mason of Mine Lodge 119.
Graveside services were held on Wednesday, April 8, 2009, 11 a.m. at Overbrook Cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his son, Jerry.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Grace Barrett Gambrell of McCormick, S.C.; and one daughter, Gracie.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 18, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the Jones Grove Baptist Church. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Ms. Mack was a native of Jefferson County, born to the late Sanka and Mamie Butler Mack. She joined Jones Grove Baptist Church where she was a member and served on the missionary board. She was employed at Jefferson Hospital for 14 years and the Jefferson County Board of Education as a bus monitor for 16 years.
