Ms. Mamie “Aunt Mamie” King
Ms. Mamie “Aunt Mamie” King, 91, of Wrens entered into rest on Sunday, July 5, 2009,
Ms. King was born in Jefferson County, on Sept. 17, 1917, to the parentage of the late Willie “Bill” King and Arvenia Russell King. She was a member of the Wood Chapel Church of God in Christ, Matthews, where she served on the Hospitality Board until her health failed. Most of her adult life was spent in New York. She migrated to Florida in the late 1960s. She remained there until the late 1980s until she moved back to Georgia to take care of her ailing mother and remained here until her death.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 9, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Thompson Springhill AME Church, Matthews, with Rev. Timothy Lewis, pastor, Elder Johnnie B. Johnson, presiding, and Elder William J. Beasley, eulogist. Interment was in the Flat Rock Baptist Church Cemetery.
She was preceded in death by eight sisters; and six brothers.
Survivors include sister, Elizabeth King, Far Rockaway, N.Y.; 12 nieces, Judy Thomas, Willie Ruth (John) King-Eason, Shawn Booker, all of Far Rockaway, N.Y., Faye Smith, Atlanta, Gayle (Freddie) Williams, Hephzibah, and Eldora King, Helen McBride, Carolyn Brown, Morolene King, Eleanor (Larry) Jackson, Janice Thomas and Cathy Stone, all of Wrens; six nephews, Beau Jack Thomas, Ronnie (Brenda) Thomas, Michael (Wanda) Thomas and Bernard Thomas, all of Atlanta, and Willie Lee (Geraldine) Hannah and Walter Thomas, all of Wrens; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Ms. Willie Alice Ponder
Ms. Willie Alice Ponder, 59, of Louisville entered into rest on Friday, July 10, 2009, at her residence.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 16, 2009, at 1 p.m. at Canaan Galilee Baptist Church and Lone Star Cemetery, with pastor Rev. Robert Stokes officiating.
Ms. Ponder was the daughter of the late Willie Albert and Louise Miller Ponder. She joined Canaan Galilee Baptist Church at an early age and attended Jefferson County School System. She was a member of the Lone Star Society.
Survivors include a brother, Isaiah (Golden Johnson) Ponder, Louisville; cousins, Mary J. Williams and Daisy Lane, both of Louisville, and Tyrie Smith of Augusta; one uncle, Frank Lafavor of Louisville; friend, Willie Tarver of Louisville; a host of other cousins, relatives and friends.

Mrs. Grace “Tiny” Hazel Kuhn Thompson
Mrs. Grace “Tiny” Hazel Kuhn Thompson, 92, entered into rest on Wednesday, July 8, 2009, after suffering a stroke on July 1.
Mrs. Thompson was born on June 16, 1917, to Daisy and John Kuhn. She grew up in Jacksonville, Fla. and St. Petersburg, Fla. After graduation from St. Petersburg High School, she went to work for Lerner Shops in Ocala, Fla. She married
Jefferson County native Felton Thompson on Jan. 1, 1941, and had been married
for 54 years at the time of his death. She also lived in Beaufort, S.C., before moving to several Florida cities then settling in Jacksonville, Fla. She worked as a secretary for Sterchi’s Furniture and modeled for one of their newspaper ads, was also a secretary at Cunningham’s Furniture, a secretary at Sawyer Gas Company, and a telephone sales representative with Sears and Roebuck. She served as leader of Girl Scout Troop 371, president of the Gaillardia Circle in 1978-79 and was a lifetime member of Ribault Garden Club. Although raised in the Presbyterian faith, Grace was a member of Neptune Baptist Church and San Jose Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at Hardage-Giddens on Monday, July 13, 2009, at 11 a.m., with burial following at H. Warren Smith Cemetery.
She was predeceased by her parents; husband; and three siblings, Margaret Weeks, Inez Dowling and Jack Kuhn.
Survivors include her daughter, Lynn Maria Thompson; and many extended family members and friends.

Mrs. Martha Jane Council Blizzard
Mrs. Martha Jane Council Blizzard, 61, of Blythe entered into rest on Tuesday, July 14, 2009, at her residence.
Mrs. Blizzard was a lifelong resident of Blythe and was an active member of the Blythe Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 17, 2009, at Blythe Baptist Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Joseph and Lula Trowbridge Council; her brother, Andrew S. Council; and her sister, Barbara Ann Council.
Survivors include her husband, Christopher Charles Blizzard; children, Angela Martin Lee, Alexander Shelby Martin and Gordon Scott Martin Sr.; five grandchildren, Gordon Scott Martin Jr., Ashley Lee, Sarah Lee, Carolyn Lee and Chris Lee; and three sisters, Peggy C. Jordan, Alice C. Reeves, and Rosalee C. Bertucci.
Pallbearers were Victor Bertucci Jr., Victor Bertucci III, Jimmy Blizzard, Lee Cason, Carl Jordan, Tommy McGlohon, Larry Reeves Sr. and Jeff Taylor.

Mr. Desomond S. “Day Day” Daniels, 14, of Augusta, formerly of Newark, N.J., entered into rest on Monday, July 13, 2009, at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 18, 2009, at 10 a.m. at the Freeman Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Carlos M. Newton Sr. as eulogist.
He was preceded in death by his great-grandfather, Lawrence Polen.
Survivors include his mother, Sandra Daniels (Samuel) Lester of Augusta; father, Jerome (Shanna) Cephus of Newark N.J.; three sisters, Desiree, Deanna and Deondra Daniels, all of Augusta; two brothers, Jershann Cephus and Levonne M. Mrs. Julia Cheely Hadden, 83, of Sparta entered into rest on Friday, July 17, 2009.
Mrs. Hadden was a native of Warren County, and had lived most of her adult life in Hancock County. She was the daughter of the late Tom M. and Suzie Hattaway Cheely and widow of Robert L. Hadden Sr. As a licensed practical nurse she worked at Providence Nursing Home and Dr. Green’s and Dr. Farrell’s office. She was a member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church.
Funeral Services were held on Monday, July 20, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Mineral Springs Baptist Church in Washington County, with Rev. Bill Seaman and Rev. Bert Mauldin officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, J.H. Hadden Sr.; and grandson J.H. Hadden Jr.
Survivors include her daughters, Laura Stepp of Sparta, and Susie (David) McLean of Griffin; sons, R.L. (Margaret) Hadden of Mitchell and Tom (Julia Ann) Hadden of Sparta; sister, Alice Cheely Echols of Graniteville, S.C.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mr. Johnny A. Jackson, 59, of Wrightsville entered into rest on Tuesday, July 14, 2009.
Mr. Jackson was a native of Jefferson County, but lived in Johnson County for 32 years. He worked as a logger with Smith Timber.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 18, 2009, at 2:30 p.m. at Davis Funeral Home Chapel, Wrightsville.

Mrs. Frances Clark Johnson, 77, of Keysville entered into rest on Tuesday, July 14, 2009, at University Hospital.
She was the wife of Jack R. Johnson. Mrs. Johnson was a member of First Advent Christian Church.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2009, at the James Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Augusta.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur E. “Buck” and Esther Mosley Clark.

Mr. Bruce Avery Knighton
Mr. Bruce Avery Knighton, 55, of Lavonia entered into rest on Thursday, July 16, 2009, at Hart County Hospital.
Born July 8, 1954, he was the son of Rebecca (Dye) Knighton and the late Clarence H. Knighton. He was group vice president of Pinnacle Bank and managed offices in Royston, Lavonia, Franklin Springs and Commerce. Mr. Knighton coached basketball, football and golf in Franklin, Oconee, and Hart County Schools for many years. He was a member of the Lavonia First Baptist Church, where he served as deacon as well as in many other capacities. He was a past president of the Lavonia Chamber of Commerce and the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce, as well as serving on the Downtown Development board of directors.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 19, 2009, at Lavonia First Baptist Church, with Dr. Larry Finger and Rev. Richard Bielski officiating. Burial followed in the Lavonia City-Burgess Cemetery.
Survivors include his mother; wife, Susan Brock Knighton; daughter, Lacey P. Knighton of Lavonia; son, Vic A. Knighton of Lavonia; and sister, Becky Sumrall of Nashville, Tenn.

Mrs. Virginia Grace Brown Livesay
Mrs. Virginia Grace Brown Livesay, 87, of Louisville entered into rest on Friday at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.
A native of Bartow, Mrs. Livesay was a daughter of the late Platt River and Alma Williams Brown Sr. She retired after more than 30 years of service as a seamstress at the Louisville Shirt Factory and was a member of Louisville United Methodist Church.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 20, 2009, at Louisville United Methodist Church, with Rev. David Hibberts officiating. Burial followed in the family plot in Bartow City Cemetery.
Mrs. Livesay was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Doyal Andrew Livesay; a son, William Drake Livesay; a daughter, Linda Diann Lamb; two sisters, Lucille Thomas and Evelyn Brown; and two brothers, William J. Brown and Platt River Brown Jr.
Survivors include her son, Dennis Paul Livesay of Louisville; daughter, Doylene Livesay Knight of Villa Rica; three sisters, Ruby Thomas of Louisville, Betty Sue Goodwin of Louisville, and Agnes Sykes of Stafford, Va.; and six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Mary Julia Ratchford Peterson, 98, of Wadley entered into rest on Saturday, July 18, 2009, at Jefferson Hospital in Louisville.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 24, 2009, at 10 a.m. at the Wadley Baptist Church, with Rev. Tom Harrison and Rev. Rusty Manning officiating. Interment will follow in the Wadley Cemetery.
Mrs. Peterson was a retired elementary school teacher. She was a member of the Wadley Baptist Church, a member of the DAR and the Jefferson County Retired Teachers organization.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Peterson; a son, Major Albert E. Peterson Jr.; and a granddaughter, Nancy Bufort McNeely.
Survivors include a daughter, Dowe P. Carter; grandchildren, Albert P. Lamb, Lt. Col. Erin Peterson and Kristen P. Lambert; great-grandchildren, Lydia Rose, Noah Rose, Anna Elizabeth Lamb and Clay Peterson Lamb; and a daughter-in-law, Tonya Meyers.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 23, 2009, from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home.
