Mrs. Iris Stevens Scarboro
Mrs. Iris Stevens Scarboro of Wadley entered into rest on Tuesday, July 24, 2009, at University Hospital in Augusta.
Mrs. Scarboro was born in Burke County, but had lived most of her life in Wadley. She was a retired quality control inspector for Wadley Shirt Factory and a member of Wadley Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held on Friday, July 17, 2009, at 10 a.m. at Wadley Baptist Church, with Rev. Tom Harrison and Rev. Rusty Manning officiating. Interment followed in Wadley Cemetery.
Survivors include a daughter, Dollie Evans; two sons, Steve Scruggs and Bert Smith; a stepson, Miles Scarboro Jr.; a stepdaughter, Harriet Ryder; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; 15 step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Heywood Stevens; a sister, Audrey Gladin; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Edward Hall, Jamie Scruggs, Rusty Scarboro, Robert Scarboro, James Moxley, Perry Gladin, Eddie Taylor and Mark Stevens.

Mr. Thomas “Tommy” Gill Sykes
Mr. Thomas “Tommy” Gill Sykes, 95, of Stafford County, Va., entered into rest on Friday, May 29, 2009.
Born on May 28, 1914, in Franklin County, N.C., he was the son of the late Thomas Jefferson and Virginia Gill Sykes. Mr. Sykes moved to the northern Virginia area after high school in 1935 and was employed by the L.P. Stewart Ford Dealership. During World War II, he worked for TWA Airlines of Washington, D.C. After the war, Mr. Sykes founded Sykes Automotive with his wife Agnes Brown Sykes, formally of Bartow, and later his two sons, Tommy Jr. and Ronald. Sykes Automotive was in business for 62 years in Alexandria, Va., before moving to a new location in Stafford, Va., in 2007. He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church for 55 years, a member of the Alexandria Optimist Club, and a long-term member of the Automotive Engine Rebuilders Association.
Funeral services were held at the Mount Comfort Cemetery, Alexandria, Va., on June 4, 2009.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Agnes Brown Sykes; two sons, Tommy (Gertie) Sykes Jr., and Ronald Sykes, all of Stafford, Va.; sisters-in-law, Ruby Thomas, Grace Livesay and Betty Sue Goodwin, all of Louisville.
Pallbearers were Brian McNabb, David Stewart, Donald Thone, Thomas M. Sykes, William Brown and Dennis Whitestone.

Mr. Thomas Thompson Jr. entered into rest on Saturday, July 18, 2009, at New Island Hospital, Bethpage, N.Y.
Mr. Thompson was born in Jefferson County, the son of the late Thomas Thompson Sr. and Nina Hicks Thompson. He was a graduate of Jefferson County High School.

Mr. Tommie Townsend
Mr. Tommie Townsend, 61, of Harlem entered into rest on Saturday, July 18, 2009, at his residence.
Mr. Townsend was the husband of Dianne K. Townsend. He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, he was a member of the Baptist faith, and had retired from Georgia Regional in 2000.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at noon in the chapel of Thomas Poteet and Son, with Rev. J.D. Turner officiating. Internment was in Bellevue Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include his wife; daughter, Susan Godowns (Bill) of Louisville; son, Chris Townsend (Dee) of Martinez; sister, Denise Willard (Tommy) of Martinez; mother, Joyce Sconyers Burns of Martinez; grandchildren, Cole, Anna and Nicholas Godowns, and Ryan and Bo Townsend.

Mr. Peterson “Pete” Franklin Henderson
Mr. Peterson “Pete” Franklin Henderson, 84, of Wadley entered into rest on Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at Glendale Nursing Home.
Mr. Henderson, a lifelong resident of Wadley, graduated from Wadley High School and North Georgia College. He was a retired bookkeeper/office manager. His working career included Central of Georgia Railroad, R.G. Foster Company, Smith Brothers Lumber Company, Gunn Wood and Gunn Drug Company. Mr. Henderson was a member of the Wadley Baptist Church, where he had served as deacon, church treasurer, clerk and Sunday school teacher. He was also a member of Gideon’s International. He was a longtime member of the Wadley Lions Club, where he had served in various capacities and as a longtime Scout Leader. Mr. Henderson served on the Jefferson County Library Board and the Jefferson County Board of Education.
Funeral services were held on Friday, July 24, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. at Wadley Baptist Church, with Rev. Rusty Manning and Rev. Tom Harrison officiating. Interment followed in the Wadley Cemetery, with Rev. Donald Lumpkin and Dr. Ernest Purcell officiating.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Helen Allen Henderson; and two sisters, Annell H. Smith and Bufort H. Davison.
Survivors include his son, Allen C. Henderson (Susan) of Athens; two daughters, Dannette H. Plummer (Bob) of Centreville, Va., and Julie H. Lee of Dublin; four grandchildren, Robert Henderson, Margaret Henderson, Nicholas Plummer and Christopher Plummer; and half-sister, Mary Frank Henderson Rogers of Tennessee.
Pallbearers were O.W. Carter, Dudley Gunn, Wynder Smith, Billy Arrington, Benjie Leaptrott, Sid Smith, Lucian Weeks and Jimmy Tarver.

Mr. Alfred Hunter
On July 19, 2009, Alfred Hunter entered into the presence of God. After 86 years of an abundant and full earthly life, Alfred left this world for eternal life with his Heavenly Father.
The celebration of his life service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 25, 2009, at Mt. Olive A.M.E. Church with the Rev. Samuel Cooper, Jr. officiating. The body will lie in state in the church beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday. Interment will be in Pines Cemetery.
Alfred entered this life on February 16, 2009 in Lincoln County, North Carolina. Upon graduating from high school, Alfred entered the US Army where he served his country honorably and was awarded three different commendations during WWII. After leaving the Army in 1946, he attended and graduated from North Carolina A&T; University. Upon graduation Alfred moved to Burke County, Ga. where he served as an educator at numerous schools including Boggs Academy, Cousins Jr. High, Waynesboro High and Industrial and Blackeney, Jr. High.
Alfred’s career with the school system spanned 33 memorable years culminating with his retirement in 1981. Throughout his tenure he impacted the lives of hundreds of students, farmers and community members.
After retirement, Alfred remained active through various church organizations including the Retired Teachers Association and Mt. Olive A.M.E. Church.
Alfred was preceded in death by his wife, Rosa. Left to cherish Alfred’s memory is his daughter, Kimberly L. Hunter, Evans, Ga.; one sister, Nellie Lofton, Iron Station, N.C.; three sisters-in-law, one god-daughter and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Mr. Jack Rowe Steele
Mr. Jack Rowe Steele, 61, of Blythe entered into rest on Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at his residence.
The family will receive friends Saturday, July 25, 2009, from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at James Funeral Home, Wrens, GA.
During the Vietnam War, Jack served our country with pride in the US Army Military Police.
He was a 28-year retired State Police Sergeant at the East Central Regional Hospital, Gracewood Campus.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Hattie Rowe Steele.
Survivors include his five children, Dennis Steele, Black River Falls, WI, Anissa S. (Jeff) Hurckman, Columbus, WI, Kenneth (Mindy) Stephens, Augusta, GA, Tracy Stephens, Ft. Collins, CO, and Lori (John) Rainchuso, Evans, GA; two sisters, Sandra S. (Francis) Tindall, Sioux Falls, SD, and Nancy S. Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Alford Clark
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Alford Clark, 86, of Louisville entered into rest on Tuesday, July 28, 2009, at her residence.
Mrs. Clark was a native and life-long resident of Jefferson County, the daughter of the late Charles Thomas Alford and the late Alice Elizabeth Smith Alford. She was the wife of the late Homer Enoch Clark Sr. and the mother of the late Charles Michael Clark. Mrs. Clark was a store manager and a retired sales person with Perlings Department Store in Louisville. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Louisville, a former Sunday school teacher at Old Bethel Baptist Church and a member of the Women’s Missionary Union. She was a member of the Fedilis Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 30, 2009, at the First Baptist Church of Louisville, with burial in the Louisville Cemetery. Dr. Don Samples officiated.
Survivors include her children, Alice (Bill) Pinkerton of Augusta, Homer E.
