Mrs. Iris Stevens Scarboro
Mrs. Iris Stevens Scarboro of Wadley entered into rest on Tuesday, July 24, 2009, at University Hospital in Augusta.

Mrs. Scarboro was born in Burke County, but had lived most of her life in Wadley. She was a retired quality control inspector for Wadley Shirt Factory and a member of Wadley Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held on Friday, July 17, 2009, at 10 a.m. at Wadley Baptist Church, with Rev. Tom Harrison and Rev. Rusty Manning officiating. Interment followed in Wadley Cemetery.

Survivors include a daughter, Dollie Evans; two sons, Steve Scruggs and Bert Smith; a stepson, Miles Scarboro Jr.; a stepdaughter, Harriet Ryder; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; 15 step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Heywood Stevens; a sister, Audrey Gladin; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Edward Hall, Jamie Scruggs, Rusty Scarboro, Robert Scarboro, James Moxley, Perry Gladin, Eddie Taylor and Mark Stevens.

Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Thomas “Tommy” Gill Sykes
Mr. Thomas “Tommy” Gill Sykes, 95, of Stafford County, Va., entered into rest on Friday, May 29, 2009.

Born on May 28, 1914, in Franklin County, N.C., he was the son of the late Thomas Jefferson and Virginia Gill Sykes. Mr. Sykes moved to the northern Virginia area after high school in 1935 and was employed by the L.P. Stewart Ford Dealership. During World War II, he worked for TWA Airlines of Washington, D.C. After the war, Mr. Sykes founded Sykes Automotive with his wife Agnes Brown Sykes, formally of Bartow, and later his two sons, Tommy Jr. and Ronald. Sykes Automotive was in business for 62 years in Alexandria, Va., before moving to a new location in Stafford, Va., in 2007. He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church for 55 years, a member of the Alexandria Optimist Club, and a long-term member of the Automotive Engine Rebuilders Association.

Funeral services were held at the Mount Comfort Cemetery, Alexandria, Va., on June 4, 2009.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Agnes Brown Sykes; two sons, Tommy (Gertie) Sykes Jr., and Ronald Sykes, all of Stafford, Va.; sisters-in-law, Ruby Thomas, Grace Livesay and Betty Sue Goodwin, all of Louisville.

Pallbearers were Brian McNabb, David Stewart, Donald Thone, Thomas M. Sykes, William Brown and Dennis Whitestone.

Mr. John Sam Terrell
Mr. John Sam Terrell, 62, of Keysville entered into rest on Monday, July 13, 2009.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2009, at Second Hopeful Baptist Church, Blythe.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Terrell; daughter, Shirley (Noel) Cartagena; stepchildren, Eddie Taylor, Joann Taylor, Jerry Taylor and Mary Kelly; siblings, William (Maggie) Terrell Jr., Harold (Lurine) Terrell, George Terrell, Tommie (Debra) Terrell, James (Katie) Terrell, Jack (Mildred) Brown, Acie (Vera) Brown, Gracie (Stanley) Hampton, Johnnie Mae Terrell, Bobbie (Biscayne) Johnson, Mary (Rev. Walter) Dukes and Delores Terrell.

Garrer Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Thomas Thompson Jr.
Mr. Thomas Thompson Jr. entered into rest on Saturday, July 18, 2009, at New Island Hospital, Bethpage, N.Y.

Mr. Thompson was born in Jefferson County, the son of the late Thomas Thompson Sr. and Nina Hicks Thompson. He was a graduate of Jefferson County High School.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 25, 2009, at Joseph A. Slinger-Hasgill Funeral Services.

Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Verdell Hannah Thompson of Amityville, N.Y.; children, Tisha Thompson-Melendez (Steve) of Day Shore, N.Y., Victor Thompson of Amityville, N.Y., Annie Daniels of Rochester, N.Y., Charlotte Swinney of Bartow, Darren Harley of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Jared Moore of Greensboro, N.C.; siblings, Annie Doris Thompson of Bartow, George (Diane) Thompson of Long Island, N.Y., Sammy Lee (Vickie) Thompson and Johnny Albert Thompson, all of New York, N.Y., and Eugene (Dora) Jackson of Bartow; mother-in-law, Eunice Smith Hannah of Atlanta; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Barbara (William) Hubbard, Covington, Lee Edward (Toni) Hannah, Elbert (Gwendolyn) Hannah and Odell (Freda) Hannah Jr., all of Atlanta.

Mr. Tommie Townsend
Mr. Tommie Townsend, 61, of Harlem entered into rest on Saturday, July 18, 2009, at his residence.

Mr. Townsend was the husband of Dianne K. Townsend. He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, he was a member of the Baptist faith, and had retired from Georgia Regional in 2000.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at noon in the chapel of Thomas Poteet and Son, with Rev. J.D. Turner officiating. Internment was in Bellevue Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include his wife; daughter, Susan Godowns (Bill) of Louisville; son, Chris Townsend (Dee) of Martinez; sister, Denise Willard (Tommy) of Martinez; mother, Joyce Sconyers Burns of Martinez; grandchildren, Cole, Anna and Nicholas Godowns, and Ryan and Bo Townsend.

Memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans #1 Freedom Way, Augusta, GA 30904.

Mr. Peterson “Pete” Franklin Henderson
Mr. Peterson “Pete” Franklin Henderson, 84, of Wadley entered into rest on Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at Glendale Nursing Home.

Mr. Henderson, a lifelong resident of Wadley, graduated from Wadley High School and North Georgia College. He was a retired bookkeeper/office manager. His working career included Central of Georgia Railroad, R.G. Foster Company, Smith Brothers Lumber Company, Gunn Wood and Gunn Drug Company. Mr. Henderson was a member of the Wadley Baptist Church, where he had served as deacon, church treasurer, clerk and Sunday school teacher. He was also a member of Gideon’s International. He was a longtime member of the Wadley Lions Club, where he had served in various capacities and as a longtime Scout Leader. Mr. Henderson served on the Jefferson County Library Board and the Jefferson County Board of Education.

Funeral services were held on Friday, July 24, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. at Wadley Baptist Church, with Rev. Rusty Manning and Rev. Tom Harrison officiating. Interment followed in the Wadley Cemetery, with Rev. Donald Lumpkin and Dr. Ernest Purcell officiating.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Helen Allen Henderson; and two sisters, Annell H. Smith and Bufort H. Davison.

Survivors include his son, Allen C. Henderson (Susan) of Athens; two daughters, Dannette H. Plummer (Bob) of Centreville, Va., and Julie H. Lee of Dublin; four grandchildren, Robert Henderson, Margaret Henderson, Nicholas Plummer and Christopher Plummer; and half-sister, Mary Frank Henderson Rogers of Tennessee.

Pallbearers were O.W. Carter, Dudley Gunn, Wynder Smith, Billy Arrington, Benjie Leaptrott, Sid Smith, Lucian Weeks and Jimmy Tarver.

Honorary pallbearers were Deacons of Wadley Baptist Church, and the Livingston Bible Class.

Memorials may be made to the Wadley Baptist Church building fund, P.O.Box 759 Wadley, Ga. 30477, or a favorite charity.

Mr. Alfred Hunter
On July 19, 2009, Alfred Hunter entered into the presence of God. After 86 years of an abundant and full earthly life, Alfred left this world for eternal life with his Heavenly Father.

The celebration of his life service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 25, 2009, at Mt. Olive A.M.E. Church with the Rev. Samuel Cooper, Jr. officiating. The body will lie in state in the church beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday. Interment will be in Pines Cemetery.

Alfred entered this life on February 16, 2009 in Lincoln County, North Carolina. Upon graduating from high school, Alfred entered the US Army where he served his country honorably and was awarded three different commendations during WWII. After leaving the Army in 1946, he attended and graduated from North Carolina A&T; University. Upon graduation Alfred moved to Burke County, Ga. where he served as an educator at numerous schools including Boggs Academy, Cousins Jr. High, Waynesboro High and Industrial and Blackeney, Jr. High.

Alfred’s career with the school system spanned 33 memorable years culminating with his retirement in 1981. Throughout his tenure he impacted the lives of hundreds of students, farmers and community members.

After retirement, Alfred remained active through various church organizations including the Retired Teachers Association and Mt. Olive A.M.E. Church.

Alfred was preceded in death by his wife, Rosa. Left to cherish Alfred’s memory is his daughter, Kimberly L. Hunter, Evans, Ga.; one sister, Nellie Lofton, Iron Station, N.C.; three sisters-in-law, one god-daughter and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Mr. Jack Rowe Steele
Mr. Jack Rowe Steele, 61, of Blythe entered into rest on Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at his residence.

The family will receive friends Saturday, July 25, 2009, from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at James Funeral Home, Wrens, GA.

During the Vietnam War, Jack served our country with pride in the US Army Military Police.

He was a 28-year retired State Police Sergeant at the East Central Regional Hospital, Gracewood Campus.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Hattie Rowe Steele.

Survivors include his five children, Dennis Steele, Black River Falls, WI, Anissa S. (Jeff) Hurckman, Columbus, WI, Kenneth (Mindy) Stephens, Augusta, GA, Tracy Stephens, Ft. Collins, CO, and Lori (John) Rainchuso, Evans, GA; two sisters, Sandra S. (Francis) Tindall, Sioux Falls, SD, and Nancy S. (Eugene) Paulson, Estherville, IA; and his six grandchildren, Amber Hockett, Whitney Rainchuso, Jessica Stephens, Madeline Stephens, Claire Stephens, and Sophia Rainchuso.

Memorial donations may be made to Blythe Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 300, Blythe, GA 30805-0300.

Mr. Elbert Bogans
Mr. Elbert Bogans, 95, of Wrens entered into rest on Saturday, July 25, 2009.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 30, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. at Burnett Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastors Gordon and Delores Williams officiating. Burial was in Stone Springfield AME Church cemetery.

Survivors include three daughters, Rosetta Bogans Duckett and Mary Ann Bogans, both of Douglasville, and LaVerne Bogans, Atlanta; two stepchildren, Thomas Benefield, Avera, and Kellysteen Ruffin, East Point.

Burnett Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Alford Clark
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Alford Clark, 86, of Louisville entered into rest on Tuesday, July 28, 2009, at her residence.

Mrs. Clark was a native and life-long resident of Jefferson County, the daughter of the late Charles Thomas Alford and the late Alice Elizabeth Smith Alford. She was the wife of the late Homer Enoch Clark Sr. and the mother of the late Charles Michael Clark. Mrs. Clark was a store manager and a retired sales person with Perlings Department Store in Louisville. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Louisville, a former Sunday school teacher at Old Bethel Baptist Church and a member of the Women’s Missionary Union. She was a member of the Fedilis Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 30, 2009, at the First Baptist Church of Louisville, with burial in the Louisville Cemetery. Dr. Don Samples officiated.

Survivors include her children, Alice (Bill) Pinkerton of Augusta, Homer E. (Susan) Clark Jr. of Louisville, Barbara (Mike) Cofer of Louisville, and Susan (Matt) Verdery of Augusta; three sisters, Grace Burch of Midville, Gladys Morris of Greensboro, and Anola Wildes of Augusta; eight grandchildren, Chris Pinkerton, Kimberly Morse, Bryan Cofer, Ellen Cofer, Jennifer Hadden, Charles Michael Clark Jr., Stephanie Verdery and Sarah Verdery; eight great-grandchildren, Katherine Pinkerton, Allison Pinkerton, Alexis Morse, Charles Michael Clark III, Luke Clark, Cameron Clark, Blake Clark and Zachary Cofer; and caregiver and friend, Dianna Peters of Louisville.

Pallbearers were Barry Wren, Tony Stavley, Lamar Baxley, Frank Etheridge, William Rabun, Tommy New, Mike McDowell, Ott Stephens and Ray Block.

The family suggests that donations be made to the First Baptist Church of Louisville, 101 East Ninth Street, Louisville, Georgia, 30434.

Mrs. Mary Ruth Dixon, 47, of Wrens entered into rest on Saturday, July 25, 2009.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, at 2:30 p.m. at Ways Grove Baptist Church, with Rev. Jimmy McCullough III officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Eddie James Dixon Jr.; four sons, Eddie James Dixon III, Damien Dixon, Reginald Hannah and Thomas Jeffery Hannah Jr.; three daughters, Jackie (John) Irby, Uvondrea (Tyrone) McGhee and Trideanna Dixon; four sisters, Margaret Holmes, Alfletia (William) Anderson, Mary Lou Brown and Christine Brown; nine brothers, Nathaniel Holmes, John Daniels, Julis (Dorothy) Daniels, Michael Brown, Octavian Brown and Nathaniel Brown; and 22 grandchildren.

Mrs. Minor Marguerite Veal Huff, 84, of Avera entered into rest on Saturday, July 25, 2009, at her residence.

Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29, 2009, at Jordan Chapel Church of God Cemetery, Edgehill, with Rev. Robbie Yawn officiating.

Minor was preceded in death by her parents, George and Ludie Veal; husband, Nauman Huff; three brothers, Thomas Leverette, Hubert Leverette and Peeler Leverette; sister, Ruth Leverette Adcock; and son, Medford Huff.

Survivors include her children, Annette H. Black, Gibson, and Kenneth D. Huff, McBean; nephew, James C. Adcock, DMD, Rayle; two nieces, Zellner Young, Savannah, and Carolyn (Paul) Simon, Augusta; and seven grandchildren, Cindy May, Cheryl Locke, Connie Jackson, Craig Hawkins, Lisa Black, Roy Black and Aleah Hawkins.

Pallbearers were James Adcock, Lee Griffin, Craig Hawkins, Bernard Pittman, Wayman Roberts and Tommy Sheppard.

Funeral services for Mrs. Ruby Leverett, 79, of Wrens were held on Friday, July 31, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Wrens Chapel AME Church, with the Rev. Sharlene Woodruff-Hendley, pastor, presiding and Elder Ella M. Samuels, eulogist. Interment was in Sugar Hill Cemetery.

Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Anfield and Linda Leverett, both of Wrens; one son, Morris Andrews, Wrens; one sister, Ada Harris, Wrens; two brothers, Ernest Andrews and Lamar Andrews, both of Augusta; two stepsons, Harold (Gloria) Leverett, Augusta, and Jim T. Leverett Jr. of Cincinnati, Ohio; three sisters-in-law, Lizzie R. Leverett and Mary Andrews, both of Augusta, and Vera Andrews, Jacksonville, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, several step-grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
