Funeral services were held on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul Primitive Baptist Church in Bartow, with Rev. C.W. Stone officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Christine Mack Williams, Bartow; two daughters, Connie W. Walker, Bartow, and Kizzy Oliver, Wrightsville; one son, Jimmie Lee Green, Warner Robins; two brothers, Leroy (Alma) Williams, Wadley, and Arlie Williams, Bartow; a sister, Gloria Dean Williams, Bartow; a sister-in-law, Ethel P. Williams, Wadley; two brothers-in-law, Isaiah McGahee and Louis Jackson, Bartow; and four grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers were Joe Lewis, Anthony Williams, Joseph Williams, Michael Williams, Lester Huff, Roy Green, Tom Hicks, Melvin Braddy, Ronnie Tarver and Derrick Oliver.

Deacon Cleavon Bell
Deacon Cleavon Bell of Wadley entered into rest on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009, in Wadley.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Aug. 9, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Brinson Hill Baptist Church in Wadley, with Rev. Dr. David Kemp officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Florence Jenkins Bell, Wadley, two daughters, Rebecca (Albert) Thompson, Daytona Beach, Fla., and Lyvon (Oliver) Bell, Louisville; three sons, Charles (Alice) Lewis and Gary (Bridgette) Lewis, all of Wadley, and Jerry (Stephanie) Lewis, Logansville; one sister, Lizzie Pearl Cummings, Swainsboro; a goddaughter, Trivina Sherrod, Cross-Green Community; 12 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, five additional sisters-in-law, two additional brothers-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers were Tommy Gibbons, Joseph Johnson, George Harrison, Derrick Knight, Vinson Miller and Willie J. Scott.

Mr. John Henry Best of Wadley entered into rest on Friday, July 31, 2009, in Augusta.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Aug. 7, 2009, at 11 a.m. at San Clair Baptist Church in Wadley, with Pastor James Middleton officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Shelley L. Best; daughter, Courtney N. Best; two sons, John J. Best and Devonte L. Best, Wadley; five sisters, Ester (Willie) Hall and Sarah (James) Perry, Wadley, Theodosia (Roger) Jones and Mary Best, Augusta, and Lucile (Kenneth) Darisaw, Louisville; six brothers, Ivery (Alma) Best Jr., James Willie (Mary) Best, Bobby Joe (Emma) Best, Eugene Best and Larry Best, Wadley, and Charles Best of Amsterdam, N.Y.; six additional sisters-in-law, seven additional brothers-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers were James Perry, Willie Hall, Ricky Tarver Sr., Anthony Strowbridge, Kevin Grier and Craig Wiley.

Mrs. Mary Louise McDade Castor
Mrs. Mary Louise McDade Castor, 86, of Matthews entered into rest on Monday, Aug. 3, 2009, at Keysville Nursing Home and Rehab Center.

A memorial service was held on Friday, Aug. 7, 2009.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Wanda Castor Brown; parents, William Edward McDade Sr. and Irene James McDade Bridges; and five siblings, William McDade Jr., Bob Bridges, Thomas Bridges, Racheal Bridges Whittle and Bud Bridges.

Survivors include her two grandchildren, Stacey (Sheri) Dill, Dearing, and Trish (Tony) Arrington, Matthews; eight great-granchildren, Katelyn Dill, Tyler Dill, Gavin Arrington, Caleb Arrington, Tiffany Arrington, Billy Arrington, Ian Sproat and Bryttani Norton; one great-great-grandson, Evan Norton; three brothers, Vance Bridges, Dolphus Bridges and Frank Bridges; two sisters, Madeline Couch and Lelia Richardson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

James Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Louis Andrew “Coconut” Chapman
Mr. Louis Andrew “Coconut” Chapman, 91, of Sandersville entered into rest on Monday, Aug. 3, 2009, in the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon.

Mr. Chapman was a native of Jefferson County, the son of the late Henry Chapman and the late Mattie Lou Chapman Altieri. He retired from the United States Army with over 21 years of active service. He was a World War II veteran having participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He received numerous accommodations and decorations including service in three major campaigns during World War II. He was a member of the Tennille Baptist Church. Mr. Chapman was a Master Mason of the Hamilton Masonic Lodge #58 of Sandersville, a Scottish Rite Mason in Macon, a York Rite Mason in Milledgeville and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Sandersville. Mr. Chapman had over 60 years of service as a Mason and over 50 years service as a Scottish Rite Mason. He was the owner and operator of Riverside Hunting and Fishing Club for over 50 years in Washington County.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 7, 2009, in the May and Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Sandersville, with Rev. Larry Giles officiating. Burial was in the Brownwood cemetery with Masonic Rites and Military Honors.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Thelma Hodges Chapman; and a grandson, Charles “Charlie” Chapman.

Survivors include his children, Teddie Louis Chapman (Gudrun) of Marietta, Col Henry C. Chapman (Shirley) of Tennille, Patricia C. Franklin-Ramage (Doye) of Milledgeville, and David Morris Chapman (Ida) of Sandersville; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; a niece, Ellen Ireland of Brunswick; a nephew, James Smith of California; and several cousins.

Pallbearers were Bill Chapman, Michael Franklin, Marion Nelson, Lonnie Yates, Carey Franklin, Chris Chapman, Ken Chapman, Greg Chapman and Michael Boatright.

May and Smith Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Ty’Won Dekel Gamble, infant, of Wrens entered into rest on Sunday, Aug. 2, 2009.

Survivors include his mother, Taccora Nelson, Wrens; father, Solomon Gamble, Louisville; sister, Ty’ Teanna Gamble; grandparents, Bernestine and Solomon Gamble, Louisville, and Georgia and Sabrina Nelson, Wrens.

Mrs. Faye Gunn
Mrs. Faye Gunn, 56, of Warrenton entered into rest on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009. Mrs. Gunn was born in Jacksonville, Fla., but lived in Warrenton most of her life. She was the daughter of the late William Edward Ellis and the late Evelyn Leona Williams Ellis. Mrs. Gunn was the head teller and office resource manager at Habersham Bank in Warrenton. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Warrenton where she had served as treasurer of the building and restoration fund. Mrs. Gunn also served as a former Children’s Sunday school teacher. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 7, 2009, at First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Jim Hanna and Rev. Kirk Bozeman officiating. Interment followed in the Johnson Cemetery. Survivors include her husband Charles W. Gunn, Warrenton; son, David C. Gunn (Erin), Norwood; daughters, Tami Burnley (Dave), Thomson, and Sharon Ball (Tim), Augusta; brothers, James Douglas Ellis, Warrenton, Larry Ellis, Gibson, and Ralph Ellis, Thomson; sisters, Patricia Kitchens, Thomson, Deloria Toulson, Lincolnton, Terri Bales, Gibson, Felicia Johnson, Alma, and Monica Usry, Gibson; grandchildren, Travis W. Gunn, Dylan Gunn, Casey Gunn, Ridge Gunn, Ryan Usry, D. J. Burnley and Blaire Ball. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund P. O. Mr. Alvin “Smokey” Hillman
Mr. Alvin “Smokey” Hillman of Dearing entered into rest on Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2009, at his residence.

Mr. Hillman was a native of Jefferson County, but had lived in Dearing for many years. He was a retired carpenter and farmer. He was a member of Fort Creek Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8, 2009, at Fort Creek Baptist Church, with Dr. Phil Bray and Rev. Jim Martin officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Beatrice Hillman; a brother, Alfred Hillman; and two sisters, Nettie Rae and Lillian Hillman.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Betty Hillman; son, Danny Hillman, Dearing; three sisters, Audrey (Louie) McMichael, Savannah, June H. Hattaway, Augusta, and Joyce Borders, Martinez; brother, Alton (Ruby) Hillman, Dearing; and one grandson, James Turner.

Pallbearers were Hugh Hobbs, Wilbur Hollimon, Marvin Dunn, Jack McCorkle, Don McCorkle and Lenny Hobbs.

Honorary Pallbearers were Boyd Reeves, Kenneth Huff, Randy McCorkle, Lynn Phillips, Calvin R. Hinton, Todd Christian, Gerald McGahee, David McGahee and Lynn J. Reeves.

Mrs. Mary Lynne McDonald Hunley
Mrs. Mary Lynne McDonald Hunley, 50, of Wrens entered into rest on Thursday, Aug. 6, 2009, at the Medical College of Georgia.

Mrs. Hunley was a lifelong resident of Wrens and was a member of Mt. Horeb Baptist Church. She was actively involved in the Relay For Life and received the 2009 Individual Spirit Award for Jefferson County.

Funeral services were held at James Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday, Aug. 9, 2009, at 2 p.m., with Rev. Stan Littleton, Rev. Billy Duggan and Rev. Elliott Fulmer officiating. Interment followed at Mt. Horeb Baptist Church Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her father, Jerrell J. McDonald; and grandparents, Royce and Flossie McDonald, and Frank and Josie Etterle.

Survivors include her husband, Rex A. Hunley; her children, April Hunley (Pete) Stapleton, Alisha Hunley (Robert) Kitchens and Jacob Allen Hunley; two grandchildren, Ashlyn Kitchens and Amber Kitchens; mother, Goldie McDonald (Les) Wooten; a brother, Jerrell J. “Jerry” (Vicky) McDonald Jr.; two nieces, Victoria “Tori” McDonald and Jennifer (Steve) Davis; one nephew, Jerrell J. “Lil Jerry” McDonald; father-in-law, Audrey Hunley; mother-in-law, June Hunley; two brothers-in-law, Scott Hunley and Jimmy Hunley; a sister-in-law and friend, Karen H. Keenan; her friends, Marsha Dixon, Karen Hughes, Nancy Watts, Nancy Holley Chance and Julie Prescott Nickels; and numerous other friends and family.

Pallbearers were Tracy Dixon, Greg McDonald, “Lil Jerry” McDonald, J. J. Russell, Scott Hunley, Jimmy Hunley, Ryan Hunley and Aron Hunley.

Honorary pallbearers were Darrell Nickels and Brady Brassell.

Mr. Edward Ray Jordan
Mr. Edward Ray Jordan, 82, of Wrens entered into rest on Saturday, Aug. 8, 2009, at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center, Downtown Division.

Born Jan. 2, 1927, Mr. Jordan was a lifelong resident of Wrens. He served his country in the U.S. Naval Airforce. Mr. Jordan was the owner of Western Auto in Wrens from 1954-1969 and Jordan’s Appliance Service until his retirement in 1984.

Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2009, in the James Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. John Jenkins officiating. Interment followed at the Wrens Memorial City Cemetery.

Mr. Jordan was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar Ray and Fannie Dye Jordan; and three sisters, Ruby J. McDonald, Mattie Rae Eudy and Juanita Jones.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Mildred Stapleton Jordan; daughter, Jere Rae Jordan (Kevin) St. John, East Hampton, Conn.; sister, Christine Kirkland, Allendale Estates; cousins, Barbara Whitaker and Brian Whitaker; and Lottie Neal.

Ms. Lessie Mae Gibbons Mack
Ms. Lessie Mae Gibbons Mack, 67, of Louisville entered into rest on Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2009, at Jefferson Hospital.

Ms. Gibbons was a native of Jefferson County, the daughter of the late Mack Gibbons and Emily Thompson Fleming and a member of the Hardeman Springfield Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Aug. 8, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Hardeman Springfield Baptist Church, with Pastor Rev. Cecil Dunlap officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include her husband of 41 years, James Hubert “Kag” Mack Sr. of Louisville; children, Gwenda Gibbons, Karen Gibbons and Terry (Katherine) Gibbons, all of Louisville; three stepchildren, Veronica (Dennis) Lofton, Angel Dixon, Lassie Hall and James H. Mack Jr., all of Louisville; 20 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Lucy Mack of Wadley; sisters-in-law, Wylene (Manuell) Young of New York, Almarie Mack and Dorothy Sanders, both of New Jersey, and Mary N. Mack of Louisville; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Louise Broomfield Walker
Mrs. Louise Broomfield Walker entered into rest on Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2009, at Glendale Nursing Home.

Mrs. Walker was born on Aug. 16, 1916, in Louisville. She was the oldest child of the late Willie and Minnie “Honey” Broomfield. Mrs. Walker received her education in the Jefferson County School System. She was a member of Jones Grove Baptist Church, where she was assistant church clerk, a member of the Deaconess Board, Missionary Board and the Adult Choir. She was also a member of the Courdeleon Society, Spring Bethel Benevolent Society and attended the Louisville Senior Citizen Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Albert “Pat” Walker; sons, Marshall Oliphant and Willie Albert “Will” Walker; sister, Marie Jordan; and brothers, Willie James Broomfield and Bobby Broomfield Sr.

Survivors include her children, Thelma Singleton of St. Petersburg, Fla., Lacey Walker Sr. (Mildred) of Burlington, N.J., John Henry Walker (Elizabeth) of Savannah, Dr. Louise Walker-Harris (Phillip) of Fayetteville, and Eddie Oliphant of Los Angeles, Calif.; brother, John Henry “Son” Broomfield; sisters-in-law, Cressie Broomfield Hill of Louisville, and Manda Walker of Wadley; 16 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mrs. Mildred Wachsmuth Copeland
Mrs. Mildred Wachsmuth Copeland, 95, of Mitchell entered into rest on Friday, Aug. 7, 2009, at Gibson Health and Rehabilitation Center in Gibson.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Mitchell UMC, with Rev. Mary Griswell officiating. After the service, there will be a scattering of ashes at the Copeland home place.

Mrs. Copeland was born in Ontario, Canada to Otto and Mamie Klipert Wachsmuth. She became a registered nurse and citizen of the U.S. After nursing at several hospitals in Atlanta, Mildred moved to Mitchell over 30 years ago to take a position at the Sandersville Hospital. She retired at the age of 75 from Jefferson Hospital, ran a Christmas tree farm, and was active in the Mitchell community, working with cancer survivors.

Survivors include her son, Cameron “Butch” (Barbara) Copeland, Braselton; three grandchildren, Cameron Copeland Jr., Beauford, Christina Copeland, Braselton, and Kenneth Copeland, Braselton; a brother, Rolf Wachsmuth, Canada; one nephew, Bill Wachsmuth, Canada; two nieces, Ruth Parent, Canada, and Donna Paul, Canada; friends, Wanda Swafford, Trish Rooks and Sherry Sturgis; and other friends and family.

Memorials may be made to Mitchell U.M.C., c/o Rev. Mary Griswell, 6216 Hwy 102 W, Mitchell, GA 30820.

He was a painter.

Graveside services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14, 2009, in the Harlem Memorial Cemetery, Harlem.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Rabun Farrow; children, James E. Farrow III, Wendy Farrow, Corinna Farrow; stepdaughter, Tabitha Rabun; brothers Duran, Robert and David; sisters Pam, Theresa, Saprina, Hope, Michelle, Tabitha, Virginia, Melissa, Angie, Dianne and Stephanie; niece, Samantha; nephew, Wayne and numerous other nieces and nephews.
