Mr. Clifford Thompson Sr.
Mr. Clifford Thompson Sr. of Louisville entered into rest on Monday, Jan. 18, 2010.

Mr. Thompson was a member of Gordon Grove Baptist Church as chairman of the Trustee Board for many years. He was a formal member of The Sons of Louisville Lodge No. 579 and Swainsboro Consistory No. 317. He received his education in the school system of Jefferson County. He was employed by Forstmann and Company for several years. He was a basketball coach for the Louisville Plant. He also drove trucks for Howard Sheppard Company. On Aug. 17, 1968, he was married to Emma Lee McGruder.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, at Gordon Grove Baptist Church, with Rev. Bennie Brinson officiating and Rev. Allen Webb presiding. Interment was in the church cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his brother, James Willie Thompson.

Survivors include his wife, Emma Lee Thompson; daughters, Bernice Brown (Thomas) of Davisboro, Glenda Walker (Barry) of Macon, Gloria Brown (Kevin) of Louisville, and Arnita Rainwater (Kevin) of Atlanta; sons, Clinton Jackson of Atlanta, Clifford Thompson Jr. (Latasha) and Lorenzo Thompson (Lealita) of Louisville; grandchildren, Yasmeen, Sheniqua, Shonterria, Tyrone, Tyrell, Amber, Naomi and Zion; brothers, Freddie Thompson (Josephine) and Leroy Thompson (Brenda), all of Louisville, and Charlie Thompson (Frances) of New Jersey; adopted brothers, Bobby Fields (Rose) of Augusta, and Stanley Brown (Shelia) of Louisville; sister, Carrie Cox (Andrew) of Atlanta; godchildren, Corey McGruder, Joey McGruder and Tekquell Watson (Sam); brothers-in-law, Willie McGruder of Louisville, Commie McGruder (Althea) and Bobby McGruder, all of Detroit, Mich.; sisters-in-law, Emma Lue Thompson Norris and Ora Thompson; aunts, Bessie Robinson, Anna Laurie Scott (Charles), Dorothy Gibbons and Ella Mae Gibbons, all of Wadley, Annie Ruth Holmes (Alex) of Bartow, Grady Thompson (Alice) and Minnie Mae Robinson of Miami, Fla., and Lula Lovett of Brunswick; friends, Andrew Gauge and Ruthie McGhee of Atlanta; and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Pallbearers were Deacons and Trustees of Gordon Grove Baptist Church.

Honorary pallbearers were Sons of Louisville Lodge No. 579.

Garrer Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Miss Janic J’Nea Williams
Janic J’nea Williams, infant, of Wadley entered into rest on Dec. 7, 2009 at Jefferson Hospital.

Janic J’nea was born earlier that day at home. She weighed 4 lbs. 8 oz. and was 18 inches long. She was the daughter of Bernadette Williams, and the granddaughter of Eddie Williams Sr. and the late Janice B. Williams, all of Wadley.

Her remains were donated to the Medical College of Georgia.

Mrs. Inez Marshall Bray
Mrs. Inez Marshall Bray, 100, entered into rest Friday, January 29, 2010, at Kentwood Nursing Home.

Mrs. Bray was born in Bartow. She retired after 35 years as a telephone operator with Southern Bell Telephone Co. She was a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church and the Faith Discussion Class, and was a member of the Volunteer Board of University Hospital and Telephone Pioneers of America.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, at 11 a.m. at St. Mark United Methodist Church, with Dr. Dane Wagner and Rev. Dan Brown officiating. Interment was in the Wadley City Cemetery, Wadley, at 3 p.m.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Roy Bray Sr.; parents, John W. and Agnes Marshall; and grandson, Larry Douglas Bray.

Survivors include her sons, Roy Bray (Kathe) of Troy, Ala., and Donald Bray (Stephanie) of Augusta; four grandchildren, John Bray (Stephanie), Chris Bray (Kelli), Joel Bray (Terri) and Marshall Bray (Shannon); seven great-grandchildren, C.J. Bray, Maggie Bray, Scott Bray, Jack Bray, Andrew Bray, Tori Bray and Emily Bray.

Pallbearers were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to St. Mark United Methodist Church, 2367 Washington Road, Augusta, GA, 30904, and Trinity On-The-Hill United Methodist Church, Nehemiah Project, 1330 Monte Sano Avenue, Augusta, GA, 30909.

Thomas Poteet and Son Funeral Directors were in charge of arrangements.

Miss Janie Bell Harris
Miss Janie Bell Harris, 85, of Thomson entered into rest on Friday, Jan. 29, 2010, at the University Hospital, Augusta.

She was a homemaker.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, at 2:30 p.m. at Jones Grove Baptist Church, Thomson, with Pastor Rev. Robert Mixon as eulogist. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include two daughters, Lillie Bell Aldred of Dearing, and Alice Davis of Wrens; two sons, Wayne “Buddy” Harris and Andre Harris, both of Thomson; 14 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 14 great-great-grandchildren; one aunt, Mae Rose Harris of Thomson; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Thomson Funeral System was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. James O’Donald Mays
Mr. James O’Donald Mays, 91, of London, England, entered into rest on Jan. 20, 2010, in Burley, England.

Mr. Mays has had many careers over his life as journalist, diplomat, author and publisher. He was born June l5, 1918, in Perkins, the son of Floyd L. and Kathleen Lutes Mays. He attended Louisville Academy and later college at the School of Journalism of the University of Georgia. In l939, the summer before graduation, he explored five southern states, cycling almost 2, 000 miles. His first job was as city editor of The Cobb County Times in Marietta. Mr. Mays joined the U.S. Army Transportation Corps, which was posted to England and would be responsible for the build-up in Southampton for the Normandy invasion. It was here that he met his wife, Mary Roberts Mays, whom he married Dec. 1, 1945. Returning to the U.S., he began publishing Blairsville’s Union County Citizen, soon becoming editor of Rural Georgia, a magazine which promoted rural electrification. In 1956 he entered U.S. Government service initially as an information officer for the U.S. Air Force in England and Germany. He then moved to the foreign

service, representing the United States in Israel, France and Finland. His service coincided with the eras of the Suez Crisis, the Cold War and the war in Vietnam. Back in Washington in 1967, at the United States Information Service headquarters, he went on to inspect U.S.I.S. agencies around the world. He ended his diplomatic career at the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency. Throughout this time he remained in the U.S. Army Reserve, eventually reaching the rank of Lt. Col. Upon retiring from government service, he moved to England where he established a small publishing house, New Forest Leaves. Mr. Mays’ first book, The Splendid Shilling, won an award from the Royal Numismatic Society, followed by Mr. Hawthorne Goes to England, Tokens of Those Trying Times, The New Forest Book: An Illustrated Anthology, and Sweet Magnolias and English Lavender: An Anglo-American Romance.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in England.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Mary Roberts.

Survivors include his son, Stuart Mays of Pennsylvania; two daughters, Angela Glickstein of Vermont, and Melinda “Pipkin” Palmer of England; one sister, Hope Arnold (Carol) of Louisville; and one brother, Harold Mays (Audi) of Augusta; six grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Fannie Nelson
Mrs. Fannie Nelson of Augusta entered into rest on Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, at the Medical College of Georgia.

Mrs. Nelson was a native of Jefferson County, a member of Mays Grove Baptist Church and was employed with the Richmond County Board of Education.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Mays Grove Baptist Church, Wrens, with Rev. Alvin Lewis officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Lawrence Freeman; one daughter, Cadaciza Freeman; one son, Aquino Freeman, Augusta; mother, Gertrude Oliphant Nelson, Augusta; three sisters, Elizabeth Oliphant, Englewood, Calif., Geneva Nelson, Augusta, and Linda Little, Wrens; seven brothers, Ernest (Pat) Nelson and Burnest Nelson, all of Augusta, Bernard Nelson, Atlanta, Alfred (Vanessa) Nelson, Willie (Melissa) Nelson, Joseph (Pam) Nelson and Alex Nelson, all of Wrens; three grandchildren, Genesis Freeman, Galeeyia Freeman and Zada Freeman, all of Augusta; a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Williams Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Mary Ellen Perkins
Dr. Mary Ellen Perkins, 99, of Atlanta entered into rest on Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010.

Dr. Perkins was born on Jan. 23, 1911 in Lakeland, Fla., to Edward Eugene Perkins Sr. and Bessie Lee Rheney Perkins. They soon moved to Wadley. Dr. Perkins moved to Atlanta in 1957. She attended Georgia Normal and Industrial College, graduating after two years. She taught school and later returned to college to earn her four-year degree in math. Dr. Perkins earned her master’s degree in education supervision and curriculum from the University of Georgia and received her Ph.D in 1964. Through her life she was affiliated in education, working for the Georgia State Department of Education at Berry and Shorter Colleges in Rome and retired after 42 years of service. After retiring, she worked on a history of student teaching at Morehouse College for two years and then joined Oglethorpe University part time. While teaching she was also consulting for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. She was a member of Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church since 1959.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, at 2 p.m. at Wadley United Methodist Church, Wadley, with Rev. Susan Pinson and Rev. Truett Leveritt officiating. Interment followed at Bethany Cemetery.

A memorial service was held on Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, at 2:30 p.m. at Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church, with Dr. David Jones officiating.

Survivors include her siblings, Edward Eugene Perkins of Rome, Frederick L. Perkins of Cairo, and Blanche Poore of Atlanta; two nieces; three nephews; and four great-nieces.

Mrs. Agnes Ivey Rogers
Mrs. Agnes Ivey Rogers, 83, of Wrens entered into rest on Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, at Warrenton Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Rogers was a lifelong resident of Jefferson County. She was a member of Reedy Creek Baptist Church where she served in different capacities as Sunday school teacher, treasurer, etc. She was the manager of Rogers Service Station and Grocery, after which she worked for M.W. Callaway and Sons, which is now James Funeral Home until September 2008.

Funeral services were held at Reedy Creek Baptist Church on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010, at 11 a.m., with Rev. John Jenkins and Rev. Byron Twiggs officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Rogers Sr.; parents, Belle Hobbs and Bruce R. Ivey; her son, Jimmy Rogers; and her brother, W.R. “Bill” Ivey.

Survivors include her children, Robert (Jane) Rogers, Waynesboro, and Louise R. (Palmer) Hadden, Warrenton; daughter-in-law, Carolyn (Hanson) Josey; twin sister, Alice (Billy) Cross, Lakeland Fla.; sister, Doris Smith, Augusta; sister-in-law, Vivian W. Rogers; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were her grandsons.

Memorials may be made to Reedy Creek Baptist Church cemetery Fund, c/o Jacqueline Peeples, 2738 Hwy 80W, Wrens, GA, 30833.

Laketa LaShay Sturgis
Memorial Services for Infant Laketa LaShay Sturgis of Thomson were held on Friday, Jan. 29, 2010, at 2 p.m. at the Thomson Funeral System Chapel, Thomson, with Rev. Tony Brown officiating.

Survivors include her mother, Josetta Williams, Wrens; and father, Antonio Sturgis, Thomson.

Thomson Funeral System was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Lewis Abbott Walden
Mr. Lewis Abbott Walden, 69, of Gibson entered into rest on Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010, at his residence.

Mr. Lewis was a native of Glascock County, a member of Bethel United Methodist Church where he attended a bible study and the men’s prayer breakfast and a member of the Glascock County Jaycees Club. He was a retired security guard.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, at Bethel United Methodist Church, with Ray Lampp and Rev. Michael Defore officiating. Interment was in the Gibson City Cemetery, Gibson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Mary Kelley Walden.

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Jimmie C. Walden; two children, Jeffery (Julie) McGahee of Gibson, and Cyndi (William) McGahee of Stapleton; a brother, George Thomas (Mary) Walden of Gibson; sister, Gloria W. Hawkins of Edgehill; five grandchildren, Justin, Quinton and Caleb McGahee, Steven Brooks and Kristy B. Harrell; and one great-grandchild, Mallory Jane Harrell.

Pallbearers were Justin McGahee, Quinton McGahee, Caleb McGahee, Clay Holbrook, Jamie Hawkins Jr., James Hawkins, Mike Lyons, Steven Ursy and Stevie Lampp.

Honorary pallbearers were the adult Sunday school class at Bethel U.M.C.

Memorials may be made to the Bethel U.M.C. in care of Renae Kelley, 585 East Main Street, Gibson, GA, 30810.

Mrs. Ann Dixon Williams
Mrs. Ann Dixon Williams, 70, of Augusta entered into rest on Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010, at Select Specialty Hospital.

Mrs. Williams was a member of Crestview Baptist Church and a member of the Sunshine Sunday School Class. She was previously a member of Augusta Primitive Baptist Church for 35 years. She retired from Hamricks as a sales associate. She was also a member of Al-Anon.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, at 3 p.m. at the chapel of Chance and Hydrick Funeral Directors, with Rev. Jimmy Sanders and Rev. Paul Cook officiating. Interment followed in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, George T. Williams.

Survivors include her daughters, Jayne Andrews (Paul), Tammy DeLoach and Melody Blease, all of North Augusta, S.C.; brothers, Bill Dixon of Allen, Okla., Lewis Dixon of Stapleton, and Max Dixon of Stapleton; sister, Edith Dixon of Poteet; grandchildren, Jared and Brett DeLoach, Krystle Blease, and Bryan, Seth and Paige Andrews; great-grandchildren, Charlie and Daphne DeLoach; niece, Carolyn Morris of Loganville; and other nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Gary Swisstack, George Zachmann, Michael Morris, Brian Peck, Ricky Williams, Donald Andrews and Hank Chavous.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the Sunshine Sunday School Class.

Mrs. Mary Bessie Irby Bishop
Mrs. Mary Bessie Irby Bishop, 80, of Conyers entered into rest on Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, at her residence.

Mrs. Bishop was a born in Glascock County. She was the daughter of the late Lowie Irby and the late Susie Bales Irby. Mrs. Bishop was the retired owner and operator of Bishop Insurance Agency.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, at Beggs Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. James M. Ramsey officiating. Interment followed in Bethel Methodist Church cemetery in Glascock County.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Eddie Bishop; and parents.

Survivors include her son, Bobby Carter of Conyers; siblings, J.T. Irby of Thomson, Mattie Irby Black of Gibson, Johnny Irby of Conyers, and Lucille Irby Edmonds of Bradenton, Fla.

Beggs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
