Mrs. Claudia Mae Heggs Cantlow
Claudia Mae Heggs Cantlow, 94, passed peacefully after a brief illness on January 31, 2010. She was a resident of Carestone at Mt. Zion Assisted Living in Jonesboro.
Claudia, nicknamed “Luss” was the sixth child born June 24, 1915, to Davis Heggs and Nancy Gibbons Heggs in Jefferson County. Her siblings were Fred, Eunice, Eldora Mazzie, Bryant, Bonnie, Ethel “Doll, ” and her surviving brother, Joe.
Claudia, twice widowed, was married
to Dewitt Walker, Sr. and Willie F. Cantlow. A lively, humorous, and caring person, Claudia served God faithfully and was rewarded with a long, blessed life. She leaves to cherish her memory: one brother, Joe (Julia) Heggs, Macon; three children, Dewitt Walker, Jr. of Atlanta, Juanita Felder of Asbury Park, N.J., and Seconia Jones of New York City; eight grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren and a host of adopted children and grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and caretakers.
Funeral services were Saturday, Feb. 6, at 11 a.m. at West Side Community C.M.E. Church in Atlanta. Interment was in Forest Hills Memorial Gardens in Forest Park.

Rev. Theophilus M Carroll
Rev. Theophilus M. Carroll entered into rest on Monday, Feb. 1, 2010.
Rev. Carroll was born on Feb. 24, 1933, in Petersburg, Ky. He was an ordained minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for over 55 years and retired in 2002 after serving for 14 years as the Pastor of the First Christian Church of Waukegan/Gurnee. The church moved from Waukegan to their new facility in Gurnee in 2000. Upon retirement, First Christian Church gave him the title of Minister Emeritus.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) on Friday, Feb. 5, 2010. Burial was private.
He was preceded in death by his parents, E. Tipton and Edna R. Carroll; son, James; and daughter-in-law, Arowanna Boykin “Bo” Carroll.
Survivors include four sons, Theophilus D. of Winamac, Ind., John M. of Noblesville, Ind., Paul H. of Saginaw, Mich., and Andrew M. of Brownsburg, Ind.; two stepchildren, Stephaney McLeod of Trophy Club, Texas, and William C. Boykin of Indiatlantic, Fla.; two sisters, Helen Francis of Stanford, Ky., and Sally McDonald of Bonifay, Fla.; one brother, E. Tipton Carroll Jr. of Wrens; nine grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

Mrs. Jessie Mae Chalker
Mrs. Jessie Mae Chalker, 86, of Thomson entered into rest on Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, in the Gibson Health and Rehab Center.
Mrs. Chalker was a native of Hancock County, but had lived in Thomson for many years. She was a homemaker and a member of Thomson First Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010, in the Curtis Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. James Ramsey officiating. Burial was in Westview Cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ruskin Chalker.
Survivors include her daughter, Vinnie Clemmons, Thomson; a sister, Virginia Moore, Avera; and a brother, James Jordan, Louisville.

Mrs. Mae G. Chalker
Mae G. Chalker, 89, entered into rest on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010, at Pineview Gardens Personal Care Home. Born in Spann, on Sept. 15, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Ellie Dewitt Glisson and Mattie Hermie Parish Glisson.
In 1944, she married
Roy Fletcher Chalker in Macon. After WWII, they moved to Waynesboro, and bought The True Citizen newspaper. She was a member of local garden clubs and a member of the Women’s Golf Association. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Roy F. Chalker, and six siblings.
She is survived by two sons, Roy F. Chalker, Jr. (Martha), of Augusta, and Phillip C. Chalker (Sandi), of Waynesboro; daughter-in-law, Kim Chalker; four granddaughters, AnneNeil Piccone (Chris), of Clearwater Beach, Fla., Jennifer Williams (Casey), Megan Webber (Lucas), of Charlotte, NC, and April Schmidt (Bernie), of Cranston, RI; one sister, Patricia Stringer, of Tampa, Fla.; five great-grandchildren; helper and companion for many years, Lula Bell Bracely; and a close friend, Reba Parker.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, Feb. 8, 2010, at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church with The Reverend Kit H. Brinson officiating. Interment followed at Burke Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Dr. Ed Byne, Tat Thompson, Walt Seeger, Doug Day, Henry Hopkins, and Tommy Purser, and Usher, Fred Broome.

Mr. Manor Bruce Gilmer Sr.
Mr. Manor Bruce Gilmer Sr., 73, of Warrenton entered into rest on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010, at University Hospital.
Mr. Gilmer was a lifelong resident of Warren County, and was the son of the late Bruce Gilmer and the late Mary Smith Gilmer. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps following the Korean Conflict. Mr. Gilmer was retired as a scale operator from Georgia Pacific in Warrenton with 20 years of service.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 5, 2010, at Little Brier Creek Baptist Church, with Rev. Roger Kennedy officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Survivors include his sons, J.R. Gilmer (Marcia) of Thomson, and Billy Doe Gilmer of Warrenton; daughters, Debbie Gilmer Lee (Terry) of Denham Springs, La., and Vivian Gilmer of Hardeeville, S.C.; brothers, Pete Gilmer, Darwin Gilmer and Dave Gilmer, all of Warrenton; sister, Faye Gilmer Harrison of Gibson; grandchildren, Callie Gilmer, Clint Gilmer, Wesley Lee and Courtney McNorris.

Mrs. Annie M. Hattaway
Mrs. Annie M. Hattaway, 84, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010, after a long illness at the University Hospital, Augusta. Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, at Westover Memorial Park in Augusta, with Rev. Mary Griswell officiating.
She was the daughter of the late Mr. Claude Clinton Morris, Sr. and Mrs. Annie Ward Morris. She was born in Richmond County on May 4, 1925. She moved from the Athens area to Mitchell in 2002 after her husband’s death. She loved to travel to see Bluegrass and Gospel groups before becoming ill. She loved her family very much.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan Rhodes (Russell); two grandsons, Reid William Rhodes (Stephanie) and Charles Graham Reese (Tiffany), two great grandchildren, Hunter and Rainy, and a great grandchild due in August 2010, all of Mitchell; her loving sister in law, Geneva “Nikki” Morris of Harlem; a very special niece, Pamela O’Donald of Ringgold, and her pet, Molly Bird. She was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband of 46 years, Mr. Herbert William Hattaway, Jr. and her beautiful forever 16 year old granddaughter, Shannon “Baby Girl” Rhodes.

Mrs. Mary Virginia Futral Jackson
Mrs. Mary Virginia Futral Jackson of Wallingford, Pa., entered into rest on Jan. 30, 2010, after a brief illness.
A resident of Plush Mills Senior Living Community in Wallingford, Pa., she previously resided at Plantation Estates in Matthews, N.C. Mrs. Jackson was born March 4, 1918, in Savannah, to Joel Eben Futral and Kate Florence Smith Futral. After graduating from Savannah High School, Mrs. Jackson earned a BS degree in commerce science from the University of Georgia. In 1941 she married
William Morgan Jackson. While pursuing his career as a mechanical engineer, the couple made their home in multiple states including Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia. Mrs. Jackson maintained an interest in the history of her family in both Savannah and Jefferson County.
Interment will be in the Futral family cemetery near Old Bethel Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years; sister, Margaret Ruth Futral; and brother, Col. Allen Ashley Futral.
Survivors include three daughters, Susan J. Nahay (Bill) of Savannah, Eloise J. Bartle (Bill) of Cleveland, Tenn., and Virginia J. Speare (Robert) of Wallingford, Pa.; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Ms. Martha Newsome Johnson
Entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, Ms. Martha Newsome Johnson, age 82 of Graniteville, S. C., wife of the late Finley Johnson and daughter of the late Luke Newsome and the late Allie N. Newsome.
She is survived by sons, Brent “Bunky” Johnson and his wife, Julie of Graniteville; Joe Hall and his wife, Tammy of Aiken, Stacy Johnson of Bath; a brother, Tom Newsome of Ridge Spring; sisters, Sadie Chavous of Aiken, Marilyn Hutto of Bowman, S. C.; nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
She was born in Gibson, Georgia but has been a lifelong resident of Aiken County. She was retired from Graniteville Company. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Warrenville. She enjoyed making flower arrangements of all sorts for any and everybody. She she was an avid gardener with a green thumb; yes. heaven’s garden will be more beautiful with Martha Johnson there. She was a loving mother, grandmother and friend to all. She will be greatly missed by her family and all whose lives she touched.
A service was held Feb. 6 in the Chapel of Napier Funeral Home with Rev. Chris Fulmer officiating. Interment was at the Graniteville Cemetery.
The pallbearers were Kevin Hall, Johnny Turner, Wayne Harrison, Michael Proctor, Wayne Banks, Jr. and Kelly Hall.
Mr. Ollin Kenneth McNair
Mr. Ollin Kenneth McNair, age 73, entered into rest at Trinity Hospital, Augusta, on Feb. 6, 2010. He was a life-long resident of the old home place in Glascock County where he was born.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010 at Mt. Beulah Baptist Church. Burial followed at Mt. Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery.
Officiating the services were Revs. Russell Davis and Bill Seaman. Honorary pallbearers were the Men’s Bible Class of Mt. Beulah Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 33 years, Dorothy Ann Parham McNair, his parents, Jeptha Isaiah McNair and Willie Bell Huff McNair, two brothers, Johnnie Theron McNair and Alfred Dean McNair, and one sister, Vivian McNair Smith. He is survived by a brother, J. I. McNair (JoAnn) of Evans, two sisters, Clyde McNair Park of Clemson, SC, Evelyn McNair Brooks of Suwanee, two sister-in-laws, Norma McNair, Dallas, TX and Jackie Stoddard, Elmire, NY, and several nieces and nephews. His very special friend and caregiver was Sam Kitchens.
He was a member of Mt. Beulah Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon and was Chairman of the Deacons body for two terms.

Mr. Kenneth Edward Harris
Mr. Kenneth Edward Harris, 64, of Stapleton entered into rest on Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, at his residence.
Born in Lamar, Colo., to the late Ida Bowen and George Calvin Harris, he served during the Vietnam War and was a Bronze Star recipient and received four other service medals. Mr. Harris was a meat cutter and market manager for over 30 years in Colorado, Kansas, Florida, Arkansas, Texas, England and Georgia. His second career was teaching electronics and slot repair in Nevada where he was licensed and certified. He was also a CDL truck driver in Las Vegas, Nev.
His cousin, Michael Lacefield, Stapleton, will have Mr. Harris interred alongside his mother in Pine Crest Memorial Park Cemetery, Mena, Ark.

Mr. James O’Donald Mays
Mr. James O’Donald Mays, husband of the late Mary Roberts Mays, passed away January 20, 2010 in Burley, England. A son of the South and a world citizen, he enjoyed many careers over his long life as journalist, diplomat, author and publisher. O’Donald was born June l5, 1918 in Perkins, Georgia, the son of Floyd L. and Kathleen Lutes Mays, with his uncle, Dr. Robert Mays, the attending physician. An avid reader with a particular love of history and geography, he discovered stamp collecting as a child and corresponded with pen pals. At about 7 years, his father gave him a type-writer to help with customer invoices, but he also used it for correspondence and dreamed of journalism and writing books.
He worked his way through college at the School of Journalism of the University of Georgia. In l939, the summer before graduation, he explored five southern states, cycling almost 2000 miles. His first job was as City Editor of the Cobb County Times in Marietta, Georgia. At the outbreak of war in l94l, he volunteered for army service but was disqualified because of poor vision in his left eye. Undeterred, he joined the U.S. Army Transportation Corps which was posted to England and would be responsible for the build-up in Southampton for the Normandy invasion .It was here that he met Mary, whom he courted and married
Dec. 1, 1945. Returning to the U.S. with his “war bride”, he began publishing Blairsville’s Union County Citizen, soon becoming editor of Rural Georgia, a magazine which promoted rural electrification.
In 1956 he entered U.S. Government service initially as an information officer for the United States Air Force in England and Germany. He then moved to the foreign service, representing the United States in Israel, France and Finland. His service coincided with the particularly challenging eras of the Suez Crisis, the Cold War and the war in Vietnam. Back in Washington in 1967, at the United States Information Service headquarters, he went on to inspect U.S.I.S. agencies around the world. He ended his diplomatic career at the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency. Throughout this time he remained in the U.S. Army Reserve, eventually reaching the rank of Lt. Col.
Upon retiring from government service, he moved to England where he established a small publishing house, New Forest Leaves. O’Donald’s first book, The Splendid Shilling, won an award from the Royal Numismatic Society, while his second work, Mr. Hawthorne Goes to England (a biography of Hawthorne’s consular years in Britain ), was praised by reviewers on both sides of the Atlantic. Another numismatic title followed: Tokens of Those Trying Times, a social history of Britain’s 19th century silver tokens. The book for which he is best known, however is his authoritative The New Forest Book: An Illustrated Anthology. Some twenty years after it was published, it remains a classic reference on the region where he lived for the last forty years of his life. His final work and autobiography Sweet Magnolias and English Lavender: An Anglo-American Romance was published in late 2008.
O’Donald had a prodigious memory, was an expert on many subjects, particularly social history, British and American literary giants, numismatics and he gave talks on these subjects all over Britain. He remained interested in current events up until the end, insisting on hearing all the news on the radio, not just the headlines. He was always a diplomat, urging his children to think of the other persons viewpoint and regularly trying to explain the vagaries of American politics to perplexed British friends. His sense of humor was at times corny, sometimes outrageous, but never hurtful.
He believed in the importance of the family and its pivotal role in promoting standards in both society and government. His happy childhood memories, the examples of family members during the Depression years stayed with him as the major influence in his life. O’Donald never lost his love for Southern food. Indeed, three chapters in his autobiography describe some of his favorites: homemade ice-cream, hushpuppies, barbecued spare ribs, candied sweet potatoes, pineapple upside-down cake and peach pie. Every Christmas he looked forward to the pecan packages sent him by his sister. A great joy in his later years was corresponding with family in Georgia and receiving their phone calls.
One of his favorite sayings - and he had many, was “Never miss a present opportunity”. During the course of his long life, it seems that he never did.
He is survived by two daughters, Angela Glickstein, Melinda (Pipkin) Palmer and one son, Stuart Mays and six grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister Hope Arnold and one brother, Harold Mays and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. James T. Norton
Mr. James T. Norton, 56, entered into rest on Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, in Columbia, S.C.
Memorial services will be held at James Funeral Home Chapel at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services—from 6-7 p.m. at James Funeral Home.
Mr. Norton was born and grew up on the outskirts of Wrens in Jefferson County. He was a carpenter and painter and worked in Georgia and South Carolina. Mr. Norton was a member of The Rock of Ages Ministry.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Louise James and Jessie Lee Norton; brother, Tommy L. Norton; and sister, Lora Dell Norton.
Survivors include five children, Chad, Jimmy, Mickey, Janice and Tracey; two brothers, Oscar L. Norton, Trenton, S.C., and Larry L. Norton, Blythe; and “special” sister, Betty N. Taylor, Wrens.
