Athens, GA - Florence Lee Loggins Aaron, 72. died Friday, October 22, 2004.

A native of Jackson County, Mrs. Aaron was a daughter of the late Calvin Kytle and Maggie Louise Jones Loggins. She was employed with Thomas Textile for 18 years and retired from Reliance Electric after 25 years. She was a member and kindergarten Sunday School teacher at New Covenant Worship Center.

Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Jake B. Aaron; brother, W.C. Loggins of Comer; sisters: Olivia Randolph of Athens and Mamie Lou Watkins of Gainesville; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held Sunday, October 24, 2004 at 3:00 p.m. in Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Howard F. Conine and the Rev. Michael Giddeons officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

The family will be at the residence of Olivia Randolph and receive friends Saturday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 at Bernstein Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the New Covenant Worship Center, 1425 Newton Bridge Road, Athens, GA 30607 or to Vista Care Foundation, 767 Oglethorpe Avenue, Athens, GA 30606.

J. Wesley Campbell
1914-2004

Athens, GA - James Wesley Campbell, 90, of 755 Epps Bridge Parkway passed away Saturday, August 7, 2004 after a brief illness.

A native of Centerville, GA, Mr. Campbell was the son of the late James Wesley Campbell, Sr. and Grady Slaughter Campbell. His wife, Edith Fletcher Campbell preceded him in death. He lived many years in Rossville, GA while employed with the TVA for 35 years. Following retirement he moved to Conyers. Mr. Campbell was an avid gardener and Braves fan. While in Centerville he was a member of the Rockbridge Baptist Church and later a member of Fairview Baptist Church in Rossville.

Survivors include two sons: James Campbell of St. Simons Island and Glenn Campbell of Athens; and seven grandchildren: James’ children: Scott, Steve, and Bradley Campbell and Glenn’s children: Gary, Paige, Cassie Campbell and Melissa Campbell Rowe.

Memorial Services will be held 3:30 p.m. Saturday, August 14, 2004 at Eternal Hills Funeral Home Chapel in Snellville, GA with the Rev. Bruce Wyatt officiating.

The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 3:30 prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1060 Gaines School Road, Ste B-2, Athens, GA 30605.

Viola Hancock Fleeman Akens
1916-2005

Winterville, Ga - Viola Hancock Fleeman Akens, age 88, of Buster Fleeman Road passed away on Monday, January 3, 2005.

A native of Oglethorpe Co, Mrs. Akens was the daughter of the late William Thomas and Mary Jane Erwin Hancock. She was preceded in death by her first husband James Winn (Buster) Fleeman and daughter Peggy Fleeman Henson and was the widow of the late Ernest L. Akens. She was a retired seamstress at Thomas Textile and a member of the Winterville Baptist Church.

Survivors include a brother and sister in law Homer Oliver and Sue Hancock; sister and brother and law Bessie Jeanette Hancock and Millard Smith, Winterville; grandchildren Douglas Coile Henson Jr. and wife Jayne, Athens; Bradley Winn Henson and wife Lisa, Surf City, NJ; Daniel Thomas Henson and wife Bambi, Athens; step son and wife Lyle and Bonnie Akens, Atlanta; grandchildren Laryn Lauderdale, Cusseta, AL; Ashleigh Rabe, Almhult, Sweden, and Ryan Akens, Atlanta; great grandchildren Douglas Coile Henson III, Michael Thomas Henson; Bradley Winn Henson, Jr.; Nicole Danielle Henson, Caroline Elaine Henson, Erik Rabe and Rebecka Rabe.

Funeral service will be held at 3PM Friday at the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home with Rev. Stan Annandale and Rev. Benson Bottoms officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Bernstein from 6-8pm Thursday. Flowers are optional, those desiring may make contributions to the Winterville Baptist Church Building Fund, 305 N. Church Street, Winterville, Ga 30683.

Pallbearers will be Doug Henson, Jr., Brad Henson, Dan Henson, Trey Henson, Michael Henson, Bradley Henson, and Ryan Akens.

Benjamin Heyward Allen Sr.
1917-2004

Athens, Georgia - Mr. Benjamin Heyward Allen, Sr., 86, of Milledge Circle, Athens, Ga. died Monday, May 10, 2004.

Mr. Allen was the son of the late Walter Percy Allen, and Pearl Gammill Allen. He was born October 5, 1917 in Lafayette, Alabama. He founded Heyward Allen Motor Company, Inc. and served as Chairman until his retirement in 1986.

Mr. Allen attended Ramsay High School in Birmingham, Alabama where he played quarterback and was the Captain of the 1937 'All Southern' championship football team. He attended the University of Georgia in 1938 where he was a three-year letterman with the Georgia Bulldog football team. He was elected Captain of the 1941 Orange Bowl team by his teammates. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1942. During his college years, Mr. Allen was a member of the Gridiron Secret Society, the Blue Key Club, the University of Georgia Letterman's Club, and the Chi Phi Social Fraternity.

After college, Mr. Allen enlisted in the United States Navy and served with distinction as a Lieutenant in World War II aboard the USS Kalinin Bay aircraft carrier in the South Pacific.

After World War II, Mr. Allen began a career as an automobile dealer. In 1947 he returned to Athens and formed Heyward Allen Motor Company, Inc. At various times until his retirement, he operated automotive franchises for Kaiser, Jeep, Lincoln, Mercury, Fiat, Cadillac, Oldsmobile, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, and Nissan. During his automotive career, Mr. Allen served as President of the Georgia Automobile Dealer's Association, a Director of the National Automobile Dealer's Association for over 10 years, and a founding Director of the American Imported Automobile Dealer's Association. He received numerous awards in recognition for his outstanding contribution to the automotive industry including the Time Magazine Quality Dealer Award in 1974.

Mr. Allen who became affectionately known as 'Coach' in his later life was also active in local civic, social and business affairs. He was President of the Athens Touchdown Club, Secretary-Treasurer of the Georgia Student Education Foundation, a Director of the First American Bank, the YMCA, and the Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Athens City Club, the Athens Country Club and the First Baptist Church of Athens.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Stanier Allen, brother, Dr. James B. Allen, a daughter, Suzanne Allen Taylor, two sons, Alexander B. Allen and Benjamin Heyward Allen, Jr. and five grandchildren, Elizabeth Westbrook Allen, Clinton Alexander Allen, Corinne Chadwick Allen, Benjamin Heyward Allen, III, and Lucy Banner Allen.

Mr. Allen was blessed with the love, support, and friendship of his caregivers; Mrs. Lulu Daniels, Mrs. Betty Adams, Ms. Mahalia Taylor, and Mrs. Eloise Rucker.

Funeral Services will be held at Oconee Hill cemetery in Athens, Ga. at 11:00 am on Thursday May 13th, with the Reverend Jon Appleton officiating.

The family will receive friends at Bernstein Funeral Home, 3195 Atlanta Highway, Athens, Ga. from 6 to 8 pm on Wednesday May 12th.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Heyward Allen Scholarship Fund, University of Georgia Athletic Association, PO Box 1472, Athens, Ga. 30603-1472 or the YMCA of Athens, 915 Hawthorne Ave., Athens, Ga. 30606 or the First Baptist Church of Athens, 355 Pulaski Street, Athens, Ga. 30601.

James Martin Allen
1942-2005

Athens - James Martin Allen, 62, of Newton Bridge Road, died Thursday February 24, 2005.

A native of Clarke County, Mr. Allen was the son of Clora Owensby Allen of Athens and the late Roman Allen and worked in construction.

Survivors in addition to his mother include his wife, Sara Hendrix Allen; children, Pennie Allen of Lexington, GA, Jeff Allen of Gadsden, AL and Joey Allen of Athens; brothers, William Allen of Commerce, Mike Allen of Athens, and David Allen of Athens; sisters, Patricia Wilson of Ila, Mary Parr of Athens; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Funeral Services will be held 2 pm Sunday February 27 in the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home with the Rev. Howard Conine officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Doug Parr, Bryan Hayes, Thomas Anderson, Bryan Minish, Andy Hayes, and Johnny Ray Gomez.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Saturday February 26 at Bernstein Funeral Home.

Margaret Chambers Alewine
1933-2005

Athens - Margaret Chambers Alewine, 71, of Grove Street, died Thursday March 10, 2005.

A native of Jackson County, Ms. Alewine was the daughter of Mattie Chambers of Commerce and the late Claude Chambers. She was also preceded in death by her husband, O.B. Alewine.

Survivors include children, O’Brien Alewine of Winterville and Gail Guffey of Athens; brothers, Claude Chambers, Jr. and David Chambers both of Nicholson, Henry Chambers of Commerce; sister, Evelyn Wilbanks of Nicholson; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held 2 pm Sunday, March 13 at Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with the Rev. Luther Fouche officiating. The family will receive friends from 12 – 2 pm on Sunday, March 13 at Bernstein Funeral Home.

Bronislavs Antans
1923-2004

Athens, Ga - Bronislavs Antans, 83, 653 Milledge Ave died Friday August 13, 2004.

Survivors include daughters, Alisa Claytor and Angela Antans, and five grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

The family will be at their respective homes.

Francis B. Anthony
1920-2005

Perry, GA - Francis B. Anthony, 84, died Monday January 3 at home after an extended illness. He was the son of the late Fred and Maude Anthony. Survivors include his wife, Peggy Arthur Anthony; twin daughters Denise Usefof and Debra Fuhrman, of Ft Lauderdale, FL; four stepchildren, twelve grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Siblings, June Elder of Flagler Beach, FL, Bennie Heard and Josh Anthony of Center.

He graduated Benton High School in 1939 and Habersham College, Clarkston. After serving in WWII, he spent most of his productive years in Miami, FL working for the Federal Housing Authority. On returning to Georgia he worked for GRFA in Milledgeville, GA and Horton Homes.

There will be a viewing from 1 – 2 pm Wednesday January 5 at the Center United Methodist Church where the family will receive friends. Graveside services will be held immediately following, Bobby Anthony officiating.

In lieu of flowers please consider Hospice of Houston County 103 Westbridge Drive Warner Robins, GA 31088 or to the church cemetery Fund.

Lovie Argroves
1917-2005

Spartanburg, SC - Lovie S. Argroves, age 87, 250 Hudson Barksdale Rd. passed away on Sunday January 2, 2005.

A native of Meriwether County, Mrs. Argroves was the daughter of the late William Allison and Cornelia Owen Spence. Her husband, William S. Argroves preceded her in death. She was a retired bookkeeper with the Leathers Company and was a member of the Watkinsville United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a son W. A. Argroves of Hillsbrough, NC.; nieces Barbara Wingo, N. Augusta SC; Lynne Grayson, Monroe, Ga; Judy Brownlee, Pfafftown, NC and Cornelia Thornton, Telephone, TX; 4 great nieces and 4 great nephews.

Graveside services will be held 11Am Tuesday, January 4th, at Evergreen Memorial Park with Rev. Luther Fouche officiating. The family will receive friends at Bernstein from 9:30 - 10:30 AM Tuesday. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Lung Association, 2452 Spring Road, Smyrna, Ga 30080.

Jane Ashley
1932-2004

Watkinsville, Ga - Jane Adcock Ashley, 72, Experiment Road died Monday September 20, 2004.

A lifelong resident of Oconee County, Mrs. Ashley was the daughter of the late James Lewis and Annie Ruth Malcolm Adcock. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Ashley and brothers Walter Daniel Adcock, Patrick Edward Adcock and Lewis Benjamin Adcock. Mrs. Ashley, served as National President of the Amvets, was a member of the Amvets Auxiliary Post 10, the Military Order of Cooties (MOC), V.F.W. Auxiliary Post 2872, DAV Auxiliary Unit 2, Clarke County Veterans Council, American Legion Post in Oglethorpe County and was on the advisory board of the Georgia War Veterans Home in Milledgeville. Mrs. Ashley retired from the University of Georgia after 45 years with the Georgia Crop Improvement Association and was also a member of the Bishop United Methodist Church.

Survivors include brothers Joe and Jimmy Adcock both of Watkinsville and sister Mavis Keyes of Bogart. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held 2PM Wednesday at the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home with Rev. Doug Bowers officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends 7-9PM Tuesday at Bernstein

The family asks that in lieu of flowers that contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 1060 Gaines School Road, Athens, Ga 30605, American Lung Association, 2452 Spring Road, Smyrna, Ga 30080 or the Bishop United Methodist Church, Bishop, Ga.

Veterans will serve as active and honorary pallbearers.

M. A. Barnes
1939-2004

M.A. Barnes, 65, of 247 Parkway Drive died Tuesday, May 18, 2004.

Born in Denver, Colorado, Ms. Barnes was a daughter of the late Julian Price and Rheva McClure Hancock. She was a staff writer for the Athens Banner-Herald and a real estate agent for Coldwell Banker Upchurch Realty. She was an active life member of the Athens Area Board of Realtors Million Dollar Club, a member of the Coldwell Banker International Sterling Society and Diamond Society, member of the Daughters of American Revolution, the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority, and MENSA. M.A. was a recent recipient of the Joe Parham Trophy given by the Georgia Press Association for outstanding achievement in the Humorous Column Category. She was also honored with the prestigious Athena Award given by the Athens Grand Opera Company recognizing her tireless support of opera. She was also a member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church.

M.A. is survived by her daughter, Julianne Webb of Cincinnati, OH; sons: Michael Barnes of Randolph, NJ and David Barnes of Los Angeles, CA; sister, Jackie Gladem of Houston, TX; and two grandchildren: Anna Barnes and Sophia Barnes.

Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 22, at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church with Dr. Jon Appleton and the Rev. Mandy Brady officiating. Entombment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers will include family members as well as certain employees of Coldwell Banker Upchurch Realty and the Athens Banner-Herald.

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 at Bernstein Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the M.A. Barnes for Support and Production of Opera, c/o Cathy Owen, Development Office, Franklin College, 300 New College, UGA, Athens, GA 30602.
