Richard Walter Brennan
1920-2005

Richard W. Brennan, born March 20, 1924 in Quelph Ontario Canada, passed away, April 27, 2005. He moved to the United States with his parents at the age of six months, settled in Rochester, NY. Richard served in the United States Air Force during WWII in the Pacific Theater. After the war, Richard worked for Stromburg-Carlson, retiring after 38 years, then moved to Atlanta, GA and retired from Contel after 15 years. He then moved to Athens, GA in 1992.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Brennan and survived by his current wife, Peggy Griffeth Amsler (Joyce); daughter, Patricia Brennan of Athens, GA; sons, Robert and Michael Brennan of Tampa, FL; further survived by his grandchildren Christine Browarski of Lompoc, CA and Mellissa Crouch of Carrboro, NC, Michael Churchill, Delia Jean, Carey Moore, Donnie Pollock, Bridget Pollock, Sean Pollock, Rose Tassillo, all of West Florida; Survived by brother Gerald Brennan of Rochester, NY and sisters, Sheila Bannerman of Wake Forest, NC and Dolly Pohl of Garden Grove, FL; in addition to many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 1 pm Saturday, April 30 in the Chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home with Rev. Luther Fouche officiating. Entombment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 pm Friday, April 29 at Bernstein Funeral Home.

Vesta Bunn
1909-2004

Vesta Cook Bunn, 94, of Athens died Saturday, May 29, 2004.

A native of Union County, Mrs. Bunn was a daughter of the late John M. and Minnie Scroggs Cook. Her husband, Gerald Bunn, preceded her in death. She was a retired Seamstress with Henson’s Garment Co. and was a member of Young Harris United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two nieces and husbands, Margaret and Roman Cutshaw of Bogart and Betty Jo and Bill Crump of Tucker; one grand nephew Kem Crump and two great grand nieces Kandy and Katie Crump all of Snellville.

Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 1, 2004 at Evergreen Memorial Park with the Rev. Mike Marsingill officiating. The family request no flowers and that contributions be made to the Young Harris United Methodist Church, 973 Prince Avenue, Athens, GA 30606.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Bernstein Funeral Home.

John A. Burkhalter
1959-2004

Comer, GA - John Alan Burkhalter, 45, life long resident of Atlanta prior to moving to Comer in 2000, passed away on December 10, 2004. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Atlanta and was employed by the University of Georgia.

He is survived by his parents, Claire and Bob Snyder; his sister and brother-in-law, Trudy and Kirk McCleskey; nephews, Matthew, Benjamin and Mark McCleskey; nieces, Madeline and Bridget McCleskey.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 18, 2004 at the City of Colbert cemetery at 3:30 p.m. with a reception following at the home of his parents in Brush Creek, Colbert, GA.

Anthony Kenneth Burton
1950-2005

Athens, GA - Anthony Kenneth Burton, 54, of Red Fox Run, passed away Wednesday, February 2, 2005.

Born in London, England, he spent his childhood in Jacksonville, Florida. He is a graduate of Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. He lived several years in Macon Georgia where he worked as a photographer for Capricorn Records. His photos appeared on album covers of artists such as the Allman Brothers and Hank Williams, Jr. After moving to Athens in the early 80’s, he became employed in the Telecommunications business.

Survivors include his wife, Geneva Burton, his parents, Kenneth and Irene Burton of Houston, MO; stepchildren, Clayton Kerce of Roswell and Gena Bradfield of Lula; step grandchildren, Larry Lindsey, Wyatt Lindsey and Katherine Alexandra Kerce.

Memorial services will be held 3:00 pm Saturday, February 5 at Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Hayes officiating. The family will be receiving friends from 2:00 – 3:00 pm prior to the service. In lieu of flowers the family asks for memorial contributions to be made to St. Mary’s Hospice House Fund, P.O. Box 6588, Athens, GA 30604.

Dorothy Mae Burrell
1923-2005

Hull - Dorothy Mae Burrell, 81, of Amberly Drive, died on Sunday, May 1, 2005.

A native of Clarke County, Mrs. Burrell was the daughter of the late Sam and Exie Strickland Bowles. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur (Crip) Burrell and one sister, Mary Colley of Hull. Mrs. Burrell was retired from Chicopee Manufacturing and a member of Victory Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughters and son-in-laws, Mary and Charles Mauldin of Athens, Robbie and Tony Hewell of Hull; grandchildren, Rhonda and Doug Barber, Tonya and Guy Sosby, Kimberly Huff, Josh Milner, and Justin Milner; great grandchildren, Brandon Barber, Dylan Barber, Desteny Huff, Joy Greene and C.J. Huff.

Funeral Services will be held 2 pm Wednesday May 4 in the Chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home with Rev. Elmer Butler officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

The pallbearers will be Doug Barber, Jimmy Barber, Shane Barber, Greg Bales, Danny McCoy and Bubby Moore.

The family will receive friends from 6 – 9 pm Tuesday, May 3 at Bernstein Funeral Home.

James Avery Callaham
1922-2004

James Avery Callaham, 320 Camelot Dr. passed away on Sunday May 16, 2004 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

A native of Belton, South Carolina, Mr. Callaham was the son of the late Pickens and Mabel Katheleen Kelly Callaham. A son, Leonard Callaham also preceded him in death. He was employed with Gulf Oil Corporation as a transport driver and retired after twenty-two years and five months of faithful service. Mr. Callaham was a member of the Shady Grove Baptist Church in Belton, South Carolina.

Survivors include his wife, of forty- eight years, Bessie Mae Leachman Callaham, Athens; daughters Wanda Arnold and Shelby Griffin both of Athens; sons Danny Callaham and Charles Callaham both of Belton, SC ; brothers M.C. Callaham and Rufus Callaham both of Belton, SC; sister Sue Estes Skarupa, Greenville, SC; grandchildren Joshua Griffin, Danielle Griffin, Heather Arnold, Angela Callaham; Daniel Callaham, Tony Callaham and Teresa Callaham, 9 great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2PM Tuesday at the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home with Rev. Crist Camden officiating. Entombment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 6-8PM Monday at Bernstein Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Ronnie Cowart, Darrell Cowart, Guy Baker, Jerry Baker, Jeff McElheney, Jeffrey Lewis, Tony Martin and Mike Ruff.

Mary Louise Cameron
1910-2004

Athens, Ga. - Mary Louise Cameron, 93, of Vine Circle. passed away on July 31, 2004.

A native of Spartanburg Co., SC., Ms. Cameron was the daughter of the late John Henry and Maude Turner Cameron. Ms. Cameron was a retired nurse and for many years worked at St. Mary’s Hospital. After her retirement she became an active volunteer with the Athens Housing Authority, and the Athens Council on Ageing. She was also a member of the Silver Haired Legislation from Clarke County. Ms. Cameron was honored to be awarded the nurse of the year award for the State of Georgia and also received several other awards for her community service. She also worked at Grandview Nursing Home after retirement and was a member of the Oconee Street United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a special friend, Geraldine Clarke of Athens; nieces and nephews Janice and Jack Hodge and Cherry and T.L. Case both of Spartanburg; SC; Gloria Ferebee, Sarasota, FL; Brenda and Melvin Smathers, Startex, SC and Terry Moss, Inman SC.

Funeral services will be held 2PM Sunday at the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home with Rev. Andy Case, Rev. Luther Fouche and Rev. Lisa Caine will officiate. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Bernstein from 1-2PM Sunday and nephews will serve as pallbearers.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers that contributions be made to the Louise Cameron Scholarship Fund, P. O. Box 102, Athens, Ga. 30601.

Geneva M. Cash
1919-2004

Bogart, GA - Geneva Moore Cash, 85, of 2903 Savage Road died Friday, August 13, 2004.

A native of Young Harris, GA, Mrs. Cash was the daughter of the late Mark and Emma Hunter Moore. Her husband, Gordon Cash, preceded her in death, July 2, 2004. She retired from Sears as office manager and was a member of Statham Baptist Church.

Survivors include a sister, Ruby Brown of Blairsville; two brothers: William Moore of Eatonton and Vaughn Moore of Blairsville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, August 15, 2004 in Bogart United Methodist cemetery with the Rev. Albert Askew, Rev. Bill Ruff, and Rev. Gordon Thornton officiating.

The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6 to 8 at Bernstein Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bogart United Methodist Church, 1201 Atlanta Hwy, Bogart, GA 30622.

Chiafung Hsu Chen
1916-2004

Parsippany, NJ - Chiafung Hsu Chen, 88, passed away on December 26, 2004 in New Jersey.

She is survived by 2 children; Chanho Chen of Parsippany and Hubert Chen of Winterville.

Memorial Services will begin at 10:00 am Sunday January 16th at Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel.

Jenchieh Cheng
1917-2005

Athens, Ga - Jenchieh Cheng, age 91, of Mountain Laurel Run passed away on Sunday, October 9, 2005.

A native of China, Mr. Cheng was the son of the late Tin Oah and Hsu Cheng. He was retired from the Taiwan Military Forces, the Taiwan Police Dept and was a member of the Christian faith.

Survivors include his wife Chao Cheng of Athens; sons Victor Cheng of Athens; Henry Cheng and J.C. Cheng both of Saratoga, CA; daughters Ke Chen Cheng of Curpertino, Ca and Yung Chen Cheng of Saratoga, CA. and 8 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at a later date in Sunnyvale, CA.

Erma L. Conway
1923-2004

Athens - Erma Mae Lucas Conway, age 81 of Athens died Friday Sept. 3rd.

A native of Ellerton, Ohio she was the daughter of the late Carl and Erma Mae Askins Lucas. Her husband, Franklin Benham Conway, preceded her in death. Mrs. Conway served in the US Navy during WW II as a member of the WAVES.(Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service.). She also retired from Kmart retail stores.

Survivors include children and spouses Lesley and Rick Maggiore of Watkinsville; Charles and Sarah Conway of Murfreesboro, TN; Mike and Carroll Conway of West Hartford, CT and Karen Dykstra of Athens; grandchildren Lisa Netterville and Laura Hewston of Atlanta; Elizabeth, Michael and Daniel Conway of West Hartford, CT. and Paivi Conway of Murfreesboro, TN; great grandchildren, Taylor Maggiore-Neeley and Alexis Netterville of Atlanta and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1PM Sunday, September 5th, at the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home with Deacon Bill Lakin officiating. Interment will follow in Melwood cemetery in Stone Mountain, Ga. at 3:30pm.

Linda Cox
1946-2004

Danielsville, GA - Linda Gail Cox, 57, Jotem Down Road, died Friday, October 15, 2004.

A native of Clarke County, Linda Cox was a daughter of Oliver and Nancy Fortson Shelnut She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her a son, Ted Shelnut; and a daughter, Jane Croy; and five stepchildren, Larry Cox, Benny Cox and David Cox, Lois Bales and Shirley Moon; and four grandchildren; all of Madison County.

Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 18, 2004 in Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Garrett officiating. Burial will be in Hull Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 at Bernstein Funeral Home.

Katherine Chatham Compton
1923-2005

Athens, GA - Katherine Chatham Compton, 81, of Athens, GA died January 31, 2005. Mrs. Compton was a native of Comer, GA and member of Meadow Baptist Church.

Katherine (Kat) had a thirty five year career in Cosmetology. She was an active member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Athens Elks Club. She was awarded Georgia Elk “Volunteer of the Year” in 1995-96 for her work with the Georgia War Veterans and the Elk Aidmore Children Center. She had also been active with the Salvation Army and other charitable groups. She had the distinction of being awarded “Paul Harris Fellow” of Rotary International.

Surviving are her husband, Paul Allen Compton; children and their spouses, son, Allen Norward Compton and Ashley O. Compton of Atlanta; Daughter, Karen Compton Benton and Thomas Benton of Jefferson; grandchildren, Jeff and Gena Farrell, Zack Tyler Evans, Chip and Jennifer Duncan, Babbette and Scott Kielar; great grandchildren, Alex Duncan, Abby Duncan and Gavin Kielar.

The family will be receiving friends and family Wednesday, February 2, from 5-8 pm at Bernstein Funeral Home, Thursday February 3, the body will lie in state from 10-11 am at Meadow Baptist Church, Comer GA, where the family will receive friends. The service is 11 am Thursday at Meadow Baptist Church, 6158 Hwy 191 Comer, GA 30629.
