Athens - Frances Farr, 93, of Hardin Drive, died on Tuesday May 3, 2005.

A native of McDuffie County, Mrs. Farr was the daughter of the late Claude and Willie Fouche Brock. She was a retired beautician and a member of the Elks Auxiliary. Mrs. Farr was preceded in death by her husband, James Leonard Farr.

She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 11 am at Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with Rev. Luther Fouche officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 pm Wednesday at Bernstein Funeral Home. In lieu of flower the family asks that memorial contributions may be made to Elk’s Aidmore Children’s Home 2394 Morrison Road Conyers GA 30094.

Gertrude Stephens Fields
1915-2005

Athens, GA - Mrs. Gertrude Stephens Fields, 89, of Athens passed away Saturday, March 5, 2005.

Mrs. Fields was a native and lifetime resident of Clarke County. She was a Seamstress and a member of Forest Heights Baptist Church. She is preceded in death by her husband, John Allen Fields, and four brothers, J. C. Stephens, Lloyd Stephens, William Stephens, and Ernest Stephens. She is survived by a sister, Delores Horne of Athens and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Service will be held at Bernstein Funeral at 4:00 pm with the Rev. Tom Lang and Rev. Mike Purdy officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2:00 until 4:00 pm at Bernstein Funeral Home.

In lieu of flower, donations can be made to Forest Heights Baptist Church, 1155 Oglethorpe Avenue, Athens, GA 30606.

Hattie Pearl Foster
1913-2004

Athens, GA - Hattie Pearl Foster, 91, of 139 Alps Road died Monday, July 26, 2004.

A native of Madison County, Mrs. Foster was the daughter of the late Ernest and Blanche Williams Gordon. She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy P. Foster; son, Ronnie Foster; and grandson, Wade Foster. She was retired from McClellan’s Dime Store and a member of Gordon’s Chapel United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her son, Royce Foster of Athens; grandchildren: Curtis Foster, Wendy Foster, Kelli Maxey, and Kim Foster; ten great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, July 30, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. in Gordon’s Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Passmore and the Rev. Luther Fouche` officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Bernstein Funeral Home Thursday evening from 7:00 to 9:00.

Sarah Doris Anderson Garrison
1921-2004

Athens, Ga - Mrs. Sarah Doris Garrison died at Family Life Enrichment Center at High Shoals, GA on December 17th after a long illness.

Born on October 27, 1921 in Oconee County, GA., Mrs. Garrison was the daughter of the late Edd Cohen and Ivey Delk Anderson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse C. Garrison and brother Jerome S. Anderson. She was a long time employee of both the Georgian and Snow White Cleaners in Athens and was a member of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include two brothers Henry Cohen Anderson and wife Darlene of Flowery Branch, GA; and Douglas D. Anderson and wife Mary of Kemah, TX; five sisters Edna Wree and husband George of Willis, MI; Lois Rotruck and husband Gene of Greensboro, GA; Marge Garrett of Greensboro, GA; Martha Kate Burger and husband Frank of Athens; and Virginia Thompson and husband Groves of Lilburn, Ga.. She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, grand and great grand nieces and nephews. A number of cousins also survive.

Funeral services will be held 1PM Tuesday at Bernstein Funeral Home with Rev. Howard Garrison officiating. Interment will follow in Oconee Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Bernstein Funeral Home from 11am – 1pm Tuesday.

Polly C. Gordon
1915-2005
Atlanta - Polly C. Gordon, 89, of Atlanta, died on Thursday April 14, 2005.

A native of Madison County, Mrs. Gordon was the daughter of the late Stoy and Margie Lee Culbertson Chandler. She was a retired Civil Service employee.

Survivors include her husband, Charles E. Gordon, formerly of Watkinsville; sons, Hugh Gordon of Acworth and Russell Gordon of Woodstock; brother, Stoy H. Chandler, Jr. of Commerce; grandchildren, Jonathan Gordon, Sarah Gordon and Rebecca Gordon.

Memorial Services will be held 1 pm Sunday, April 17 in the Chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home with Rev. Luther Fouche officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association 1353 Jennings Mill Road, Ste A Bogart, GA 30622.

Walter Gross
1923-2004

Athens, GA - Dr. Walter Gross, 80, of 755 Epps Bridge Parkway died Tuesday, July 20, 2004.

A native of New York, NY, Dr. Gross was a son of the late Albert and Sophia Reichner Gross. He was a retired Professor of Marketing from the University of Georgia having served from 1964 to 1984. He received his B.A. from Brooklyn College in 1944; and from the New York University he received his M.B.A. in 1948 and his Ph.D. in Marketing in 1963. He has received many, many honors and awards. He received the Fulbright Award for Senior Lectureship, Austria, 1974-1975 and was the editor of the Marketing Abstracts section of the Journal of Marketing, June 1975 to present. He authored a number of books in the field of Sales Management and Marketing. He was a member of the Congregation Children of Israel.

Survivors include his wife, Florence Geld Gross of Athens; son, Marshall J. Gross of Athens; daughters and sons-in-law: Linda Gail and Dr. Bruce Leon of Houston, TX and Arleene Sue and Miguel Estrada of Escondido, CA; brother and sister-in-law, Alfred and Clare Molly Gross of Pembroke Pines, FL; and grandchildren: Joshua Stephen Gross, Leah Megan Gross and Michelle Katherine Leon.

Funeral Services will be 3:30 p.m. Thursday, July 22, 2004 at Congregation Children of Israel with Rabbi Ronald Gerson officiating. Burial will follow in Oconee Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Congregation Children of Israel, 115 Dudley Drive, Athens, GA 30606 or to the University of Georgia Art Museum.

Annie M. Greene
1932-2005
Annie Mae Massengale Greene, 74, of Roberts Road died on Sunday, July 3, 2005.

Mrs. Greene, a native of Greenville, GA., was the daughter of the late Alton and Annie Mae Keith Massengale. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Tamara Alicia Messer. Mrs. Greene was previously employed as a nurse with the old Athens General Hospital and was a member of the Baptist faith

Survivors include her husband, Dr. James Thomas Greene, Athens; daughter, Kay Lynn Greene, Marietta and daughter and son in law, Kathy Anne Greene and David Messer of Winterville; two sisters, Pauline Ellerbee of Winder and Jane Bly of St Paul, Minnesota; and a special friend Eleanor Hale, Athens.

Funeral services will be at 3 pm, Friday July 8, 2005 at Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Buhl Cummings officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 pm Thursday July 7, 2005 at Bernstein Funeral Home

William "Hardtimes" Harding
1939-2004
Athens, GA - William G. “Hardtimes” Harding, Sr., age 64, died Tuesday, October 5, 2004.

The son of the late Garfield and Catherine Harding of Charlottesville, VA, Mr. Harding was employed for 21 years at Athens Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Dillard Harding; son, William G. Harding, Jr. and daughter-in-law, Linda; daughter, Elizabeth R. Harding; brothers: James and David Harding; sisters: Pamela Harding and Marietta James; three grandchildren: Greg, Sean and Katie Harding; nieces; nephews; and many good friends.

The family will receive friends at Bernstein Funeral Home on Thursday, October 7, 2004 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

Funeral Services will be held at Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, October 8, 2004 at 11:00 am with the Rev. Crist Camden officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Terry Foster, Brett Self, Alan Parker, Adam Spence, Dean Williams, and Ron Benak.

David S. Hardigree
1949-2004
Ellijay, GA - David Stanley Hardigree, 55, of 72 North Pine Drive, Ellijay, passed away Wednesday December 8, 2004.

A native of Decatur, Mr. Hardigree was a son of Sidney Curtis Hardigree and the late Edna Grace Holiday Hardigree. He was a graduate of Augusta College with a BA in Economics and a graduate of Augusta Law School. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran having served in the Vietnam conflict. He retired from Georgia Power as a Senior Field Auditor. He was preceded in death by his sister, Julie Ann Helm.

Survivors in addition to his father are a daughter, Heather Anne Hardigree Eberheart of Martinez and a brother Richard Hardigree of Athens.

Funeral Services will be held 4:00 pm Friday, December 10, 2004 in Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Matthew Waldrop officiating. Entombment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 4:00 pm Friday prior to the services. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.

Ellen Crowe Hammond
1923-2005
Athens, Ga - Ellen died on March 31, 2005 at the age of 82. Beloved mother of Dr. Deborah Hammond Budge and Colonel Harvey L. Hammond, Jr.

She was a woman ahead of her time, balancing love of family with professional pursuits. She was born into a loving Christian home on March 3, 1923 along with a much loved twin sister, Helen Crowe Colston, known as “The Crowe Twins, ” in Bogart Georgia. She was the daughter of the late Joel Allen and Myrtice McHugh Crowe.

She graduated from Bogart High School in 1940 and then graduated with honors from the Athens Business College, working for 17 years for Wilkins Industries as financial secretary and payroll clerk. She was a very disciplined person working at First Baptist Church of Athens as financial secretary for seven years and at Briarwood Baptist Church for seven years as secretary. She also worked seven more years for Dr. Eugene Younts and Colonel Robert Rowan at the University of Georgia. She enjoyed a good life, a total of 38 working years.

Ellen and Harvey were high school sweethearts, and sincerely loved each other. So in 1945 she married Harvey L. Hammond and they were a very devoted and loving couple.

Harvey was working for Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company here in Athens and retired from the company after 43 years of service. In 1950 they joined the First Baptist Church of Athens where she has been a member for 54 years and a devoted and active member of the Dorcus-Snow Sunday School Class. Their children, Deborah and Lee grew up here at First Baptist Church and we all loved this church very much. Ellen and Harvey both were very religious people and taught many years in Sunday school, teaching young people. In fact, one of Ellen’s students is still living here in Athens and constantly tells her that she kept her on the right path and how she appreciates this care when she was a teenager. Harvey and Ellen have served on almost every committee there is in the church and her husband, Harvey, was Dr. Jon Appleton’s first Deacon Board Chairman. Ellen was a member of the Athens Country Club, an avid cook, reader and golfer and achieved the fete of making two holes-in –one, on the same hole, of golf.
She was so proud of her two children. She and Harvey loved these children dearly and were so proud when they excelled in something they were doing.

Ellen loved people and was a good and caring caregiver to her mother and for her twin sister, Helen.

She is survived by her two children, Dr Deborah Hammond Budge and her husband Arthur of Dallas, Texas and their children Ashley Ellen Atkins, Arthur N. Budge, III. and Katie Elizabeth Budge and Colonel Harvey L. Hammond, Jr. and his wife Pam of Yorktown, Virginia and their children Lindsey and Kevin Hammond. Other survivors include a twin sister, Helen Crowe Colston of Athens, niece Mrs. Patsy Hammond Thomas of Watkinsville and a grand-nephew, Joel Perry Thomas of Duluth.

Funeral services will be held at 11AM Monday, April 4, 2005, at the First Baptist Church of Athens with Dr Bill Ross and Rev. Frank Granger officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to The Harvey L. and Ellen C. Hammond Memorial Scholarship at the First Baptist Church of Athens, 355 Pulaski Street, Athens, Georgia. 30601. The family would like to thank the staff of Talmadge Terrace Lanier Gardens for all the kindness shown to their mother after she moved there in 2000 and especially the wonderful circle of friends that she came to love.

Pallbearers will be Kevin Hammond, Joel Thomas, Neal Budge, Kenneth Nash, Verlyn Hammond, Cecil Maxey, Doug Hammond and Allen Crowe.

Charles K. Hambrick
Charles Knight Hambrick. Jr, 87, of Clarke Circle in Lexington passed away on Friday, January 6, 2006.

A native of Troup County, Mr. Hambrick was the son the late Charles Knight and Pauline Smith Hambrick, Sr. Mr. Hambrick served in the Army Air Corps during WW II and opened the first Kroger grocery store in Athens in 1944 and was store manager for the next 28years until his retirement. After his retirement he opened the Qwik Serv, which was Athens first convenience store, and over the next fourteen years he opened an additional four stores. He also taught ground flight school in Athens and Atlanta for several years. In 1982 Mr. Hambrick moved from Athens to Lexington, Ga and was a member of the Lexington Masonic Lodge # 158, the Lexington American Legion Post 123, the Athens Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 2872 and a member of the Presbyterian faith.

Survivors include a daughter and son in law Diane and Paul Heidenreich of Calabassa, CA; son and daughter in law Ronald Hunt and Donna Hambrick of Pensacola, FL; granddaughter Amanda Hambrick; grandson and wife Joey and Sara Frederickson all of Pensacola, FL and eleven years old twin grandchildren Zack and Kate Heidenreick of Callabassa, Ca.

Funeral services will be 3PM Sunday at the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home with Walter McCannon, Jr. and Wayne Lance officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park with full Masonic rites. The family will receive friends 1-3PM Sunday at Bernstein Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions be made to the Vista Care Hospice, Ben Burton Rd, Athens, Ga 30606

Pallbearers will be Eugene Day, John Meyer, Alvin Stamps, Rob Coffeen, Rex Coffeen and Jacob Day. Members of the Lexington Masonic Lodge will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Athens, GA - John David Hewlett of 360 Ashton Drive died Monday, July 19, 2004.

Graveside Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 21, 2004 in Oconee Hill cemetery with Bishop Mark Haverland officiating.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the residence.

Henry Edward Hendrix
1924-2005
Athens, GA - Chief Henry Edward Hendrix USN (Ret) died Friday, May 20, 2005. A native of Oglethorpe County. Mr Hendrix was the son of the late Carl W. and Annie Mae Leachman Hendrix. He was preceded in death by two brothers Alvin Hendrix and Benjamin Hendrix; and two sisters Sylvia Seagraves and Drita Hendrix. Mr. Hendrix retired from the U.S. Navy and later retired from Athens Regional Medical Center. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of the VFW and American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Smith Hendrix; son, Raymond Edward Butler of Comer; daughter and son in law Anita and George Therriault of Athens; two brothers, Carl W. Hendrix of Chesapeake, VA and Bobby James Hendrix of Athens; and three grandchildren, Karen Singleton of Cumming, Susan Pannell of Athens, Jason Butler of Destin, FL, two great grandchildren Connor Pannell and Collin Pannell, both of Athens.

Graveside services will be Monday at 2 pm at Evergreen Memorial Park with the Rev. Crist Camden and Rev. Larry Davison officiating.

Visitation will be Sunday from 6 pm to 8 pm at Bernstein Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to St. Mary’s Hospice, P. O. Box 6588 Athens, GA 30604 or Oconee Heights Baptist Church, 4180 Jefferson Road, Athens, GA 30607.
