Jean Darby Ruff Henry
1928-2005
Athens - Jean Ruff Henry, 76, of Camelot Drive, died Wednesday, May 18, 2005.
A native of Madison County, Mrs. Henry was the daughter of the late, Neal and Nell Campbell Darby. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Earl D. Ruff and William M. Henry and was a member of Oconee Heights Baptist Church.
Survivors include her children, Debra R. Vernon of Athens, Michael E. Ruff of Winterville and Timothy G. Ruff of Athens; stepson, W. David Henry of Reston, VA; brother and sister in law, Neal and Sara Darby of Acworth; grandchildren, Shoshana M. Vernon and Matthew Ruff.
A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

Faith Stewart Hillenbrand
1917-2004
Athens - Faith Stewart Hillenbrand, 86, died Friday, May 7, 2004 at St. Mary's Hospital in Athens, Ga.
Mrs. Hillenbrand was born on November 10, 1917 in Tokyo, Japan, to American missionary parents, who died while she was still a girl. As the eldest of four children, she spent much of her youth in caring for her three siblings in Fort Valley, Ga. After her graduation from Asbury College in Wilmore, Kentucky, she taught in the Georgia School System for a year. In 1941, she departed for Burma as a missionary. While in Rangoon, she met Vice Consul Martin Hillenbrand, whom she married
in June of 1942.
After Japan entered the war, she became an ambulance driver with the St. John's Ambulance Corps. During the Japanese advance on Burma, she left for Calcutta on one of the last BOAC Flying Boats to stop at Rangoon. Once in Calcutta, she managed General Stillwell's Calcutta office while he was in Assam, training Chinese forces in the hope of recapturing Burma from the Japanese.
As the wife of a Foreign Service officer, she accompanied her husband on assignment to numerous posts, including Lourenco Marques, Bremen, Washington, D.C., Paris, Berlin, Bonn and Budapest, where her husband served as the first U.S. Ambassador to the Hungarian Peoples' Republic. In 1972, her husband was assigned to West Germany as Ambassador, where Mrs. Hillenbrand fulfilled her official duties as hostess with elegance and finesse; she took these duties seriously, and set an example that was rarely equaled.
In 1976, she and her husband moved to Paris, France, where they lived for six happy years. In 1983, her husband accepted a position at the University of Georgia, and they moved to Athens, where Mrs. Hillenbrand was active in the University Women's Club, and the Wednesday Study Club. She spent much of this time traveling with her husband, and her love of gastronomy took them on several dining tours of the great restaurants of France.
Mrs. Hillenbrand is survived by her husband of nearly sixty-two years, Martin J. Hillenbrand, and by her three children, Ruth Quinet of Seattle, Washington, David Hillenbrand of Toronto, Canada and Savannah, Georgia, and John Hillenbrand of Athens, Ga., who remember her for her adventurous and rebellious spirit, her love of travel and fine dining, her garden and her dogs, her intense loyalty to her friends and family, and her generous spirit. She was the loving grandmother of Derrick Quinet, Stuart Hillenbrand, and Joseph Hillenbrand.
A memorial service will be held at two o'clock P.M. on Wednesday, May 12 at Athens First United Methodist Church. Memorials may be made to the St. Mary's Hospice, P.O. Box 6588, Athens, Ga. 30604.
The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service.

John Barrett Hogan
1971-2005
Kennesaw - John Barrett Hogan, 33, of Kennesaw Station Drive, died Sunday, February 27, 2005.
A native of Cobb County, Mr. Hogan is the son of Donald Barrett and Frances Pritchett Hogan of Hoschton. He worked as an electrician apprentice for AP Electrical and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 613. He was a graduate of Cobb County High School and received an Associate Degree from Gwinnett Technical College.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister, Kimberli Shea Hogan of Kennesaw.
The family will receive friends from 7 -8 pm on Tuesday March 1 in the Chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home followed by Funeral Service at 8:00. Ken Young and Mike Spradlin will officiate. A private interment will be held Wednesday.

Joe (Mutt) Human
1924-2004
Athens, GA - Joe Horace (Mutt) Human, 79, of Danielsville Road died Friday, April 16, 2004.
A native of Franklin County, Mr. Human was the son of the late Clyde and Mozell Vickery Human. He was a retired auto mechanic.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Elizabeth Stewart Human of Athens; daughters: Debbie Benson of Athens and Linda Nicholson of Franklin, TN; son, Steve Human, of Norcross; sister, Susan Goodwin of Savannah; four grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
Graveside Services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 18, in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with the Rev. Elmer Butler officiating.
The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 at Bernstein Funeral Home.

Michael James Leslie Hyatt
1957-2005
Athens - Michael Hyatt, 47, of Athens, died on March 5, 2005.
A native of Toronto, Canada, Mr. Hyatt was the beloved son of James E. Hyatt of Athens and Audrey Auks of Hollywood, FL. He was the Operations Superintendent of Solid Waste for Athens-Clarke County, past Master of Mt. Vernon Lodge #22 and Board member of the Clute Barrow Nelson Life Foundation. Mr. Hyatt was a member of the Catholic faith.
Survivors in addition to his parents include wife, Susan Sockman Hyatt; daughter, Christine Lynn Gordon of Winder; Stepmother, Carolyn Hyatt of Athens; sisters, Kathy Higgins of New Castle, Canada, Dr. Christine Torres of Tampa, FL; Stepbrothers, Johnny Nixon, Gene Nixon, Benny Nixon, all of Athens; grandchildren, Nicole Hawkes, Taylor Hawkes, Chase Hawkes, Holley Gordon, Jacob Gordon, Jeffery Gordon, PFC 1st Class Joshua Gordon, and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5 -9 pm on Tuesday March 8. Funeral Services will be held 7 pm Tuesday March 8, in the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home. Regina Fay Jackson

Danielsville, Ga - Regina Fay Whitfield Jackson, age 41, 628 Hwy 191 passed away on December 23, 2004.
A native of Clarke County, Mrs. Jackson was the daughter of Donald Whitfield of Hull and Chanda Fay Chafin of Danielsville. She was a graduate of Madison Co. High School in 1980 and served in the United States Army for four years. She was a homemaker and a member of the Baptist faith.
Survivors in addition to her parents are husband, Allen Jackson, Danielsville; sons Rudy Luna, Jr and Ruben Luna and daughter Jasmine Jackson all of Danielsville; two sisters, Rhonda Daniel of Bishop and Shea Thornton of Arnoldsville and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 2PM Monday at the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home with Rev. Ray Finger and Rev. Larry Elliott officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Bernstein from 6-9 PM Sunday.

Bogart, GA - Ada Estelle Coker Jones, 85, of Burson Street died Sunday, October 3, 2004.
A native of Forsyth County, Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Jones, Jr., and her mother Lillie Bell Johnson. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her son, George H. Jones of Bogart; daughter, Phillis Burnett of Greer, SC; five grandchildren; and 1 great grandchild.

Violet "Pat" Johnson
1921-2004
Athens, Ga - Violet Elizabeth Bolin “Pat” Johnson passed away Saturday Nov. 13 after an extended battle with alzheimer’s disease.
Born June 26, 1921 in Clover, South Carolina, she was raised in Gastonia, North Carolina. She joined the Navy during WWII where she met and married
the late John Howard Johnson of Athens.
Survivors include six children Johnny, Steve, Dan, Phil, Tim and Ellen; three daughters in laws Sarah and Jan Johnson and Laurie Fowler: brother Banks Bolin; six grandchildren Betsy, Ben, Haley, Amble, Jessica and Sam Johnson.
Graveside services will be held at 2PM Monday, November 15, at Evergreen Memorial Park with Dr. Walter G. Cook officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence, 225 Harben Place.
She made everybody around her better.

Maria Josefa Pages Juaristi
1901-2004
Maria Josefa Pagés Juaristi died of natural causes on December 6, 2004 at the age of 103 in Athens, GA.
Señora Pagés Juaristi was born on June 8, 1901 in Jaguey Grande, Cuba. She graduated from the University of Havana in 1927 and was among the first women to graduate with a pharmacy degree in Cuba.
She married
Octavio Pagés Cantón, a judge and artist, in 1928. She and her husband left Cuba in 1969 and moved to Athens, Georgia, to live with family.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Crescencia Gabiola Uriarte and José Ignacio Juaristi Acaiturri, as well as several brothers and sisters. Her family’s roots originated in the Basque region of Spain, an area famed for fiercely independent and long-lived people.
She will be remembered by her family as a highly intelligent and formidable individual with an indomitable spirit. Her love of animals was worthy of St. Francis´approval. She never stopped loving Cuba. Her wicked sense of humor and sharp mind were a source of constant amazement to those around her.
She is survived by her son, José R. Pagés, a daughter-in-law, Teresita Pagés, and grandchildren Pilar Pagés, Nell Oliff, Héctor Pagés, Maria Pagés Center, David Olliff and Ken Hedrick. She is also survived by nieces and nephews in Miami and in San Juan, Puerto Rico, as well as numerous caregivers ( Maria Jovel, Rita Ayala, Leonela Rebollar, Amada López, Aida and Angélica) who took loving care of her in her final years.
The Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated at the UGA Catholic Center by Rev. Fr. Jack McDowell on December 7th, 2004. Burial was held at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.
William Griffeth "Bill" Kesler
1923-2005
Athens, GA - William Griffeth “Bill” Kesler died May 23, 2005 at Athens Healthcare and Rehabilitation.
He was the son of the late Roy Lee and Lurlene Griffeth Kesler and was preceded in death by brothers John Lee Kesler, George Truett Kesler, Sr. and Roy Lanier “Buddy” Kesler.
He was a native of Madison County, Georgia but lived in Athens most of his life. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, veteran of World War II United States Naval Medical Corp serving with the Marines in Okinawa, Guam and Pacific Campaign in 1942 – 1945. He was the founder and co-owner of Kesler’s Chevron.
Surviving him are sisters, Geraldine “Deanie” Kesler Cunningham, Athens, Janelle Kesler Vickery, Winder and Jane Kesler Bramlett, Commerce; brothers, Austin A Kesler, Athens, Wendell M. Kesler, Columbus, Donald E. “Don” Kesler, Hull and a number of nieces and nephews.
Nephews will be serving as pallbearers: Danny Kesler, George Kesler, Mark Cunningham, David Vickery, Lane Kesler, Jay Kesler, Eddie Kesler and Jim Bramlett.
Graveside services will be held 11 am Wednesday, May 25 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in the Neese Community.
Visitation will be at Bernstein Funeral Home 6 -8 pm Tuesday, May 24.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Heart Fund, Diabetes Foundation, WWII Memorial Washington, DC or a charity of one’s choice.

Mary Jean Kelly Kitchen, 86, of 582 Medinah Drive, formerly of Athens, died Wednesday, April 21, 2004.
A native of Knoxville, TN, Mrs. Kitchen was the daughter of the late John Thomas and Mary Agnes Murray Kelly. Her husband, James Monroe Kitchen, Jr., preceded her in death. She was a homemaker and while in Athens attended St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Jean K. Crabtree of Martinez; sons: James M. Kitchen of Clarksville, TN, John Thomas Kitchen and Joseph Michael Kitchen both of Memphis, TN; eleven grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 24, in Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel with Father Jack McDowell officiating. Entombment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Crawford, GA - Alice Moon Kime, 73, of Crawford Smithonia Road died Tuesday, November 2, 2004.
A native of Oglethorpe County, Mrs. Kime was the daughter of the late Richard P. Moon, Sr and Estelle Burt Moon. She was a homemaker.
