Bogart - Vera Runa Kinman, age 82, of Mars Hill Road passed away on Friday, January 28, 2005.

A native of Oconee County, Mrs. Kinman was the daughter of the late Vester and Essie Roberts Brewer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold C. Kinman and son Harry David Kinman. Mrs. Kinman retired from Dairy Pac and was a member of the Mars Hill Baptist Church.

Survivors include daughters and sons in law Debbie and Gregg Austin and Christine and Danny Horne both of Bogart; son and daughter in law Bobby and Mary Kinman of Watkinsville; brother Mell Brewer of Arnoldsville; sister Nell Thomas of Watkinsville; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2PM Monday at the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Davison officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 7-9 PM Sunday at Bernstein.

Pallbearers will be Todd Kinman, Travis Horne, Brad Horne, Herman Fields, Brent Ki+-nman and Jerry Thomas.

Evelyn W. Landers
1910-2004
Athens, GA - Evelyn Whitehead Landers, 93, died Sunday, August 8, 2004.

Survivors include son-in-law, Robert Ray Henderson; sister, Frances Smith; and four grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 3:00 pm Thursday in Evergreen Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 pm at Bernstein Funeral Home.

Edna Wortie Landrum
1934-2005
Athens GA - Edna Wortie Landrum, 70, of Jefferson River Road, died Wednesday April 20, 2005.

A native and life long resident of Jackson County, Mrs. Landrum was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Landrum; father, Thomas Matthews, and a sister, Elizabeth Gearing. Mrs. Landrum was Food Service Supervisor of the Athens Diversion Center and a charter member of Living Waters Worship Center.

Survivors include her mother, Julia Estelle Sorrow, son and wife, Larry and Martha Landrum of Athens; daughters and husbands, Gayle and William Whitfield, Sharon and Tommy Hanson, all of Athens, Dorothy and Phil Golson of Greensboro; sisters, Louise Marlow of Athens, Martha Patrick of Commerce and Diane Compton of Athens; brothers, James Matthews of Jefferson and Herbert Matthews of Commerce; seven grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and Godmother, Mary Bruce.

Funeral Services will be held 11 am Saturday, April 23 at Living Waters Worship Center with Pastors William Whitfield and Mitch Elder officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 – 9 pm Friday, April 22 at Bernstein Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions may be made to Living Waters Worship Center 430 Bogart-Jefferson Road, Statham GA 30666.

The family will be at the home of Gayle and William Whitfield, 83 Sarah Street, Athens, GA 30607.

Robert E. Lewis, Jr.
1931-2005
Robert E. Lewis, Jr., 74, of Chesterfield Road, Bogart, GA, died on April 18, 2005.

A native of Southport, NC, Mr. Lewis was the son of the late Robert E. and Inez McGinn Lewis. A graduate of Elon College where he attended on a football scholarship, Mr. Lewis was a stock broker and had an extended career as a manager at Robinson Humphrey Company. Mr. Lewis served as an officer in the United States Marine Corps for 7 years, was a past Director of the Athens-Clarke County Republican Party, was a member of Athens Country Club and a member of St. Stephens Anglican Church.

Survivors include his wife, Jean T. Blackstone of Bogart; children, Barbara Ann Lewis of Jonesville, SC, Robert Conley Lewis, of Homossa, FL, Linda Lewis Leger of The Woodlands, TX, Thomas M. Lewis of Atlanta; stepchildren, Lisa B. Blackstone of Alpharetta and Jeff T. Blackstone of Monroe; sisters, Evelyn R. Porter of Atlanta and Tina Lewis Wood of Wilmington, NC; 5 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 Noon, Wednesday April 20 at St. Stephens Anglican Church with Bishop Mark Haverland and Father John Catteral officiating. Interment will follow at Arlington Memorial Park cemetery in Atlanta at 3 pm with Dr. Bill Self officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 pm Tuesday April 19 at Bernstein Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Henry (Hap) Hannon, Dr. Dwayne Erickson, Dr. Phil Lukert, Robert Hopkins, Lou McLennon, Frank Pritchard.

Mary Lupyon
1918-2004
Mary Toth Lupyon, resident of Morningside of Athens, 1291 Cedar Shoals Dr. passed away on Saturday April 17, 2004.

A long time resident of Thorpe, W. VA., Mrs. Lupyon, was the daughter of the late Louis and Theresa Chikas Toth, Sr. Her husband, Paul Lupyon, Sr. preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by sisters, Elizabeth Leach; Anna Popovich, and Theresa Berentes, brothers Gabor Toth and Louis Toth, Jr. Mrs. Lupyon was a retired retail sales clerk and a member of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include a daughter Barbara Smith, of Athens and son Paul Lupyon, Jr., of New Port News, VA.; sisters Helen Spychala, Bloomfield, N.J. and Margaret Cochran, Beckley, W. VA.; grandchildren Paul Lupyon, III, Garry Lupyon, Jennifer Lupyon and Cynthia Wilbanks; great grandchildren, Whitney Ann Veal and Christopher Todd Veal;

a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2PM at the Woodlawn Memorial Park cemetery in Bluewell, W.VA. The family asks in lieu of flowers that contributions be made to the Atlanta Area Chapter of the Alzheimer Association, 1925 Century Blvd. Suite 10, Atlanta, Ga 30345.

Corine Dixon Martin
1921-2004
Athens, GA - Corine Dixon Martin, born March 16. 1921, of 436 John Collier Road died November 11, 2004.

A native of Oglethorpe County, Mrs. Martin was a daughter of the late Granville and Mary Gabriel Dixon. She was preceded in death by her husband Fant E. Martin. She was employed with Chicopee Mills and later owned and operated Martin Grocery in the South Jackson area for many years. She was a member of Oconee Heights Baptist Church and the Hope Sunday School Class.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Evangeline (Van) M. and Dick Nixon; son and daughter-in-law, Dwayne E. Martin and Janice Carpenter all of Athens; brothers: Edward Dixon of Athens and Benny Dixon of Marietta; half-brothers: Bobby Dixon and Aubrey Dixon both of Athens; half-sisters: Elizabeth Lowe of Athens, Betty Jo Anderson, Carol Wagnon and Doris Parks all of Hull; grandchildren: Cindy Lee and Ricky Nixon both of Athens, Bryan Martin and Dwayne Martin both of Marion NC; seven great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held 2:00 pm Saturday, November 13, 2004 in Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Crist Camden, the Rev. Elmer Butler and the Rev. Bud McDonald officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family will be at the home of Dick and Van Nixon, 540 John Collier Road, Athens and will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 at Bernstein Funeral Home. Hilda F. Malcolm
1936-2005
Athens, GA - Hilda F. Edwards Malcolm, 69, of Hunnicutt Drive went home to be with her Lord, Friday, June 17, 2005, surrounded by her family at her home.

A native of Oconee County, she lived most of her life in Athens. Mrs. Malcolm was the daughter of the late Joe S. and Juanita Elrod Edwards. She was a homemaker, loving wife, mother and Granny. She was a member of Forest Heights Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Boyd G. Malcolm; special pet Penny; son and daughter-in-law, Darrell E. and Dedra Malcolm of Burlington, NC; daughter, Carol A. Malcolm of Athens; brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Diane Edwards of Jefferson; grandchildren; Jennifer Malcolm, Lindsey Malcolm, Christopher Malcolm and fiancA©, Kristi Yow; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 2 pm Sunday June 19, 2005 at Forest Heights Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Purdy officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Deacons of Forest Heights Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends on Saturday from 6-8 pm at Bernstein Funeral Home. Flowers are optional. Frances McLeroy
1917-2004
Athens, GA - Frances Doster McLeroy, 87, of 696 Whitehead Road died Monday, November 8, 2004.

A native of Clarke County, Mrs. McLeroy was a daughter of the late Garnett Avery and Bertha Lucille Sims. She was preceded in death by her husband, James L. McLeroy, Sr. and her son, Donald Steven McLeroy. She was a homemaker and a member of Chapelwood United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her sons: James L. McLeroy, Jr. of Athens, Garnett Wayne McLeroy of Clarksville, Michael Dennis McLeroy of Watkinsville; daughters: Gloria Frances Bell of Lilburn, Beverly Lucille Saye of Watkinsville, Glenda Ann Thomas of Snellville, Judy Lynn McLeroy of Athens; sister, Annie Jeanne Smith of Athens; twenty-one grandchildren; thirty-two great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, November 12, 2004 at Chapelwood United Methodist Church with the Rev. Thom Shores, the Rev. Peggy Little, and the Rev. Chip Evans officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 at Bernstein Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Chapelwood United Methodist Church, 100 Janice Drive, Athens, GA 30606.

Larry Varnadoe McLeod
1932-2004
Larry Varnadoe McLeod, 72, of 382 Woodward Way, passed away Tuesday, December 6, after a courageous battle with cancer.

A native of Ellaville, Schley County, Georgia, he was the son of the late Lamartine Varnadoe McLeod and Christine Stewart McLeod. He graduated with honors from Gordon Military College and the University of Georgia, earning his Juris Doctor degree from UGA School of Law in 1954. For the next 48 years he practiced law in Athens, the vast majority of that time as a partner with the firm of Erwin, Epting, Gibson & McLeod, and managing partner of the firm of McLeod, Benton, Begnaud & Marshall, L.L.P., serving, among others, commercial, financial and health care institutions. His accomplishments in the field of law are both numerous and notable. He was a nationally known lecturer and author of numerous papers, articles and monographs on a variety of legal subjects, including Aspen’s Hospital Contracts Manual and of the Georgia Hospital Law Manual. In the health care field he was the 1983-84 President of the American Academy of Hospital Attorneys, an organization composed of more than 2600 attorney-members from all 50 states and served as a member of its Advisory Committee to the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals. He was instrumental in founding and served as the first President of the Georgia Society of Hospital Attorneys. He also served for over 30 years as general counsel and a member of the Board of Directors of St. Mary’s Hospital.

In the commercial and financial fields he is a former Adjunct Professor teaching corporations, estate planning, and other courses at the University of Georgia School of Law, a member of the faculty of the Georgia Banking School from its inception, and has served as Chairman of the Fiduciary Law Section, the Uniform Commercial Laws and Banking Law Committees and the Estate and Gift Tax Committee of the Taxation Section of the State Bar of Georgia. He also served on the Advisory Committee on State Banking Laws, Advisory Committee on Revision of Article 9 of the UCC, Fiduciary Law Study Committee, State Probate Code Revision Committee, State Guardianship Code Revision Committee, Subcommittee on Professionalism in Law Schools, Board of Trustees of ICLE, and was Past President of the Western Circuit Bar Association. In 1973 he was elected a Fellow in the American College of Probate Counsel. During his career Mr. McLeod was selected for inclusion in such publications as Who’s Who in The South, the consumer’s guide to The Best Lawyer’s in America, and the First Edition of Who’s Who in American Law.

In local affairs Mr. McLeod previously served as Judge Magistrate for the Court of Clarke County. He is a former Athens Young Man of the Year, recipient of the Junior Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award, past president of the Athens Lions Club, the Athens Toastmasters Club, was twice president of Athens Little League, and a Shriner. He has served as a member, officer, and director of many other civic, charitable and business organizations in the Athens area. Recently, he devoted much of his time and effort reading a variety of texts for Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic.

He was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church for 50 years, where he served three terms on the Vestry, was a founding member of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, served for many years as the Youth Director for EYC, and as a lay reader and usher.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ann Joye, daughter Crystine McLeod Odom of Bogart, Ga., and son Joseph Bryan McLeod of Raleigh, N.C. Son in law Thomas Mitchell Odom, Jr. and daughter in law Lynn Donaldson McLeod. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Thomas Mitchell Odom III, Alexander McLeod Odom, Barbara Ann McLeod, and Joseph Reading Mcleod. He is also survived by his brother, Lamartine Stewart McLeod and sister in law Sue, of Chattanooga, TN, one niece and two nephews, and numerous cousins.

A memorial service will be held 2pm Friday, December 10, 2004 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church on Prince Avenue with Rev. Peter Courtney and Rev. Mandy Brady officiating. The family will receive friends from 5pm to 7pm at Bernstein Funeral Home on Thursday, December 9. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Hospice House, 1230 Baxter Street, Athens, GA 30606.

Jack McDaniel
1929-2005
Watkinsville, GA - Jack McDaniel, 75, of Echo Trail in Watkinsville, passed away on Thursday January 13, 2005.

A native of Brunswick, he was the son of the late Adonia Earl and Marie Screws McDaniel, Sr. of Brunswick. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Brunswick and did masonry work for a number of years.

In addition to his wife, Louise McDaniel, he is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Danaria and Don Jesweak of Bogart; and daughter and son-in-law, Kelly and Mark Taylor of Waynesville; 2 brothers, A. E. McDaniel, Jr. of Brunswick and Jerry D. McDaniel of Jesup; 2 sisters, Patricia Carr of Lawrenceville and India Ballinger of Brunswick; and 8 grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held 2:00 pm Sunday, January 16, 2005 at Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel in Athens, GA with the Rev. Mark Taylor officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery in Athens.

Pallbearers will be Bruce Flanders, Jerry McDaniel, Jr., John Gillespie, Byron Flanders, Glenn Doster, Fred Cartey and Homer Hansford.

The family will receive friends Saturday, January 15, 2005 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Bernstein Funeral Home. Those desiring to do so, may make memorial contributions to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital at 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Connie Marshall McEver
1960-2005
Watkinsville, GA - Connie Marshall McEver, 44, of Rose Drive, passed away Sunday, January 16, 2005.

A native of Clarke County, Ms. McEver was the daughter of Clete and Dorothy Jean Miller Marshall. A son, Michael Henry McEver, preceded her in death and she was a member of Living Word Baptist Church.

Survivors in addition to her parents include the father of her children, Anthony Mitchell McEver of Watkinsville; 2 sons, Antonio M. McEver of Sumpter, SC and Anthony Nathan McEver of Athens; a brother, Clete E. Marshall, Jr. of Athens; 3 sisters, Rita Caldwell of Colbert, Tammy Peters of Monroe and Lisa Edwards of Watkinsville.

Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 Tuesday January 18th at Living Word Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Davison and Rev. Stevie Coombs officiating. The family will be receiving friends at the home of Clete and Dorothy Marshall, 1141 Rose Drive Watkinsville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Living Word Baptist Church Building Fund.

Barnett Mitchem
1913-2004
Barnett Malcom Mitchem, 90, of Thomson died Wednesday, May 26, 2004 after a long battle with cancer and heart disease.

A native of Morgan County, Mr. Mitchem was a son of the late Charles E. and Mary Veale Mitchem. His wife, Ruby Porter Mitchem, preceded him in death. He was a very successful grocer and owned several food stores in the Atlanta area. He moved to Hernando Beach, Florida, where he lived for 29 years, he was a successful real estate developer. He moved to Thomson in 2003. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the Far East and was of the Christian faith.

Survivors include a brother, C.E. Mitchem and his wife, Frances, of Conyers; sisters-in-law: Lois Mitchem of Atlanta and Sarah Mitchem of Florida; and a number of nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his lifelong friend and companion, Hazel Turner, of Thomson and special friends Michael and Sandra Turner of Harlem, GA.

Graveside Services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 29, 2004, at the Willoughby cemetery on highway 15 south of Watkinsville with the Rev. Paul Vickery officiating.

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 at Bernstein Funeral Home.
