Betty Jo Moore
1931-2004
Betty Jo Hayes Moore, Athens Street, Hartwell, formally of Athens, passed away on Friday May 21, 2004. She led a beautifully fulfilling life and fought courageously but lost her battle with cancer.

A native of Oconee County, Mrs. Moore was the daughter of the late Willard Hiram and Marie Frances Hayes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sidney Lamar Moore; brothers William George “Jake” Hayes; Emmitt Donald Hayes and Charles Edward Hayes and sister Mary Sybil Nixon. Mrs. Moore was a member of the Athens Country Club, The Cateechee Golf Club of Hartwell, past member of the Wednesday Bridge Club and the Thursday Afternoon Bridge Club; past member of the Hartwell Garden Club and a member of the Abundant Life Baptist Church in Hartwell.

Survivors include one son Jimmy Moore, Hartwell; sisters Gertrude Morris, Athens; Wilda Lord, Watkinsville and Elizabeth Burrell, Watkinsville and a number of nieces and nephews. Also surviving are “adopted daughter” Brenda Spears of Hartwell and “adopted son” Joey Tucker of Athens.

Funeral services will be held at 1PM Tuesday at Prince Avenue Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Ricketts, Rev. Ted Kelly and Coach Mark Richt officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends at Mrs. Moore’s residence in Hartwell from 2-8PM Sunday and in Athens from 6-9PM Monday

at Bernstein Funeral Home. On line tributes may be made at www.mem.com.

Pallbearers will be Brian Butcher, Dick Ferguson, Mark McKinnon, Terry Patterson, Bryan Pulliam, Lenford Smith, Buddy Spears and Chad Tucker. Honorary pallbearers will be members of her Wednesday Bridge Club and Thursday Afternoon Bridge Club.

Billy Gene Mount
1936-2005
Nicholson, Ga - Billy Gene Mount, 68, 1148 Old Kings Bridge Road passed away on Friday, February 25, 2005.

A native of Jackson, TN, Mr. Mount was the son of the late Moses Howard and Willie Mary Morris Mount. A retired typographer he had co-authored a book entitled “A Letter To Reanna”. Mr. Mount had served in the US Naval Reserves, was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the Beech Haven Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife Rasma Sudmalis Mount of Nicholson; daughter Andra Lee Mount, of Marietta; daughter and son in law Laura M. and Skip Franklin of Dawsonville; brother, Howard Greye Mount of Jackson, TN, granddaughter Reanna McKee of Marietta and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2:30 PM Sunday at the Beech Haven Baptist Church with Rev. A.B. Sawyer officiating. Interment will follow in Melwood cemetery in Stone Mountain, Ga. In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 1684 Barnett Shoals Road, Athens, Ga 30605.

The family will receive friends 6-8PM Saturday at Bernstein Funeral Home and the remains will lie in state at the church from 1:30 -2:30 PM Sunday at the church where the family will also receive friends.

Francis W. Mueller
1931-2004
Athens, GA - Mueller, Francis W. (Bill). Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and uncle passed away peacefully at home on May 3, 2004 after a lengthy illness. He is survived by his loving wife, Marjorie, and four sons; Richard, of Torrington, CT; Douglas of Santa Barbara, CA; Stephen of Prescott Valley, AZ and Timothy of Cumming, GA.

Born March 11, 1931 in New Haven, CT ‹ he was a resident of Thomaston, CT prior to moving to Athens, GA in 1982. He served in the military with the U.S. Naval Reserve for 9 years. He received a degree in Applied Science, M.E. from Waterbury State Technical Institute. At age 20 Bill began his lifelong career with the Seth Thomas Clock Company, (later General Time Corp.) He served in the Thomaston Volunteer Fire Department for 30 years achieving the rank of 2nd Assistant Chief. In 1982 Bill and Marge moved to Athens and he continued his employment with General Time until retirement in 2000.

The addition of grandchildren brought a special joy to Bill's life, and he will always be missed and remembered by Alyssa, Liana, Jordan and Derek. Bill is also survived by several cousins and many nieces and nephews.

William Nettles
1928-2004
Danielsville, GA - William W. Nettles, 76, of 656 Pinetree Road died Monday, November 15, 2004.

A native of Madison County, Mr. Nettles was son of the late Jesse T. and Byrnyce Penny Nettles. His wife, Doris Harwell Nettles preceded him in death. He was a truck driver and a member of the Bluestone Baptist Church in Madison County.

Survivors include a daughter; Merri Anne Jenkins of Danielsville; a brother; Jesse T. Nettles, Jr. of Marco Island, FL; a grandchild; Chris Jenkins of Danielsville and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 7:00 pm Thursday, November 18, 2004, in Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ray Jenkins officiating. Burial will be in Pinecrest cemetery in Mobile, AL.

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 at Bernstein Funeral Home.

Nellie R. Nix
1910-2004
Athens, GA - Nellie Rebecca Nix, 94, of Athens, passed away Tuesday, December 14, 2004.

A native of Clarke County, Mrs. Nix was the daughter of John Samuel and Annie Kent Patrick. She was a member of Central Baptist Church in Athens and was employed for a number of years with Chicopee Manufacturing Company. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her son, Curtis Nix.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Charles Mann of Athens; daughter, Mildred Gurley of Athens; a brother, John Henry Patrick of Bishop; grandson and wife, Kerry Keith and Katherine Joan Gurley; three great grandchildren, Candice Lynn, Sarah Grace and Tyler Keith Gurley.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday December 17th in the Chapel at Bernstein Funeral Home with the Rev. Morris Sapp and the Rev. Dennis Kesler officiating. Interment will follow at Oconee Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 pm on Thursday, December 16th at Bernstein Funeral Home.

Bobby Parten
1939-2004
Commerce, GA - Bobby Allen Parten, 64, of Berea Road died Wednesday, November 10, 2004.

A native of Barrow County, Mr. Parten was the son of the late William Ezra and Fairy Bell Owens Parten. He was preceded in death by his son, Russell Parten. He was a retired electrical tester from Westinghouse. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the Greater Athens Church of God.

Survivors include his wife, Rachel Davis Beauchamp Parten of Commerce; son and daughter-in-law, William Allen and Tammy Parten of Dahlonega; stepchildren: Greg and Stephanie Beauchamp of Nicholson and Rhonda and Richard Leonard of Danielsville; sister, Lynette Fowler of Winterville; grandchildren: Brittany Noel Parten, Joshua Allen Parten, Angelia Rae Parten, Kyle Leonard, Chris Leonard, Austin Beauchamp, Conner Beauchamp and Kayla Beauchamp.

Funeral Services will be 4:00 pm Friday, November 12, 2004 in Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Leon Pass and the Rev. Jack Bowen officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday afternoon from 1:00 to 4:00 at Bernstein Funeral Home.

Richard (Rick) Pintar
1957-2004
Richard Michael (Rick) Pintar age 46, 180 Arbor View Dr. passed away Sunday April 18, 2004.

A native of Sharon, PA., Mr. Pintar was the son of Robert I. and Fay Jazwinski Pintar. He attended school in Sharon, Pa and graduated from Cedar Shoals High School in 1975. His love of life was his family and friends along with baseball and golf. He was employed by Northeast Sales Distributing Company where he was a sales supervisor and was also a member of the University Of Georgia Catholic Center.

Survivors in addition to his parents include one son Jacob Michael Pintar; fiancée Paige Hopkins Mitchell both of Athens; brothers, Robert Pintar, Jr and Jack Pintar both of Athens; brothers and sisters in law, Bill and Jane Pintar, of Decatur, Ala; Mark and Tonia Pintar, of Athens and Tom and Krystal Pintar and their son Lee Pintar of Athens.

A funeral mass will be held at 6:30PM Tuesday at the Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel with Father Jack McDowell officiating. The family will receive friends from 7:30 — 9:00 PM following the mass. Interment will be held at 11 AM Wednesday at Evergreen Memorial Park. The family asks that in lieu of flowers for contributions to be made to the Jacob Pintar Educational Fund, Athens First Bank, P. 0. Box 1747, Athens, Ga 30603 ATT:Branch 6, Katherine Alexander.

Pallbearers will be Mark Himsl, Jim White, John “J K” Kenney, Billy Loader, Chuck Matheson, John Bentley, Trip Mosteller and “Pappy” Golob.

Mae Christine Pope
1919-2004
Athens, GA - Mae Christine Johnson Pope, 85, died Wednesday, October 13, 2004.

A native of Newton County, Mrs. Pope was a daughter of the late John Thomas and Lema Stubbs Johnson. Her husband, Howard Daniel Pope, preceded her in death. She was a homemaker and an active member of Prince Avenue Baptist Church.

Survivors include her son, Henry Daniel Pope of Forest Park, GA; daughters and sons-in-law: Mae Dolores and Kenneth Dowlen of Fort Worth, TX, Linda and John Verschuren of Athens, Christy Loraine and Charles Ray Howard, Sr. of Forest Park, GA; sister, Mary Helen Butler of Covington; grandchildren: Lisa McGuire, Chad Casey, Charles Ray Howard, Jr., James Daniel Howard, Brian Pope; and six great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 16, 2004 in Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Dowlen, the Rev. Bill Ricketts and the Rev. John Verschuren officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hills Memorial Gardens, Forest Park, GA at 3:00 p.m.

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 at Bernstein Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Prince Avenue Baptist Church Mission Fund, P.O. Box 1112, Athens, GA 30603.

George Pierce Postell
1919-2005
Winterville, GA - George Pierce Postell, 85, of Shady Glade Place, passed away on Friday, January 28, 2005.

A native of Birmingham, Alabama Mr. Postell was a retired engineer from Westclock. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Mae Chapell Postell, and his children, George Postell, Jr., Jack Postell and Ethel Postell Schuler.

Survivors include grandchildren, Deshon Williams, Sarah Johnson, Stephen Johnson, Beth Baker, all of Athens, Nicole Postell and Christopher Postell of Orlando, FL; great grandchildren, Ashley Baker, Abby Williams, and Jackie Postell.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 31 at Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with the Rev. Luther Fouche officiating. The family will be receiving friends Sunday, January 30 from 6:00 to 8:00 at Bernstein Funeral Home.

Benjamin Frederick Preston
1913-2005
Benjamin Frederick Preston, age 92, of Milton, Fla., died April 26, 2005. He was the son of the late Benjamin Frederick Preston, M. D., and wife Lillie Smith Preston of Farmington, GA. Following his graduation from Madison, GA A&M;, Ben volunteered for the U.S. Marine Corps. He was severely injured in Hawaii and honorably discharged and returned home to recuperate. After a long healing period he, on 7 May 1940, volunteered for the U.S. Navy. Ben retired 27 September 1968 having served 30 years military service. During his service he was stationed on many U.S. Carriers and in many foreign ports from Beijing (then called Peeping), Newfoundland and Guantanamo. He was stationed on the island of Okinawa, in San Diego, Calif., etc. but always returning back to Jacksonville or Pensacola, Fla.

Ben first married Mildred Stewart of Milledgeville, GA and after her death he married Ms. Dean Culberson of Gulf Breeze, Fla, who survives him. Other survivors are step-sons Jack Culberson and wife Candy of Gulf Breeze, Fla. And Paul Culberson of Cordele, GA; one sister, Sue Preston Lutz; a nephew, Jerre Frederick Lutz, M.D., and wife Carlin of Dunwoody, GA; three great nephews, Jason Benjamin Lutz, wife Suzie and their son Benjamin Reese Lutz of Tucker, GA; Brian Cullum Lutz and wife Kelly of Suwanee, GA and Andrew George Lutz of Dunwoody, Ga. Graveside services will be in Farmington, GA cemetery April 30, 2005 at 3:00 pm.

Michael A. Queen
1970-2004
Athens, GA - Michael Alan Queen, 33, passed away Thursday, April 29, 2004.

A native of Fulton County, Michael was born September 27, 1970, to Alfred Lee and Patricia Ann Brigman Queen. He attended Hope Haven and was a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church.

Survivors in addition to his parents are his brother, Christopher Lee Queen of Cleveland, OH; grandmother, Mary Teal of Thomaston, GA; and a host of loving family and friends.

Funeral Services will be 3:00 pm Sunday, May 2, 2004 at Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Joannah Cook officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at Bernstein Funeral Home prior to the services. Katheryn Joiner Reed
1948-2005
Katheryn Waters Joiner Reed, 56, passed away suddenly on July 3, 2005. Born in 1948, she was a lifelong resident of Athens. A graduate of Athens High School, she continued her education at Athens General Nursing School and began a long career as a licensed Practical Nurse and later a Registered Nurse. Her care and skills as a nurse have spanned more than thirty years, and she will be remembered by the many people she worked with and cared for.

Her love of travel, animals, and her family are but a few of the many things that she will be remembered for. She was predeceased by her father, Doherty Joiner; her mother Martha Burgess, and her brother George P. Joiner.

She is survived by her son Michael Reed and daughter in law Alissa; her daughter Katheryn Baldwin, son in law Jim, grandchildren Jake and Lily, all of California. She is also survived by her brother Hank Joiner and sister in law Vicki of Athens. Nephews George, Greg, Christopher and Benjamin; nieces Heather, Jennifer, and Jessica, as well as cousins in Texas and Washington.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her memory at the Athens-Clarke County Humane Society.

A service to celebrate her life will be held Saturday July 9, 2005 at 2 pm at First United Methodist Church. Family and friends are welcome. A reception in the Fellowship Hall will immediately follow the service.

William F. “Dusty” Rhodes, Jr.
1924-2006
Athens, GA - William F. “Dusty” Rhodes, Jr., 81, of Athens, passed away Thursday, March 9, 2006.

Mr. Rhodes, a native of Tampa, FL, was the son of the late William F. Sr., and Jett Rhodes. A veteran of World War II, he lived most of his life in Winder, GA where he was an educator before retiring to Athens in 1979.

Survivors include his wife Kathleen Rhodes, children; Dorothy Ann Tunmer of Winterville, Mary Helen Rhodes of Greensboro, Kathy Elaine Rhodes of Atlanta, and Thomas F. Rhodes of Ormond Beach FL, sisters; Helen R. Jackson of Athens, sister in law; Peggy G. Maxwell of Roswell, five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 3 PM, Friday, March 10, 2006 at Bernstein Funeral Home with Father David McGinnis officiating. The family will receive friends at 2 PM at Bernstein Funeral Home on Friday. Interment will be at Evergreen Memorial Park.
