Betty Jo Thomas, 70, Old Hodges Mill Road passed away on Saturday May 29, 2004.

A native of Oglethorpe County, Mrs. Thomas was the daughter of the late James E. and Minnie Broome Waldroup. Her husband Joseph P. Thomas preceded her in death. Mrs. Thomas was a homemaker and a member of the Promise Land Baptist Church.

Survivors include sons Edwin Thomas and John Thomas both of Bogart; daughters Vicki Gaines of Atlanta; Sandra Rowland of Hull; Shelby Scarco of Escondido, CA and Cathy Mize of Farmington, 10 grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 11AM Tuesday at Evergreen Memorial Park with Brother David Dawson officiating.

The family will receive friends at Bernstein from 6-9PM Monday.

Elmer Loyd Watkins
1929-2004
Athens, Ga - Elmer Loyd Watkins, 595 S. Poplar Street passed away on Saturday, December 11, 2004.

A native of Madison Co, Mr. Watkins was the son of the late Fred and Pearlie Mae Epps Watkins. A loving father, grandfather and great grandfather Mr. Watkins was retired from the Dillard Company after 30 years and was a member of the Johnson Drive Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years Reba Lavender Watkins of Athens; daughter and son in law Donna and Jerry Smith of Flowery Branch; sister, Mae Dulaney of Athens; grandchildren Stephanie and Kenneth Ledford and Jennifer Smith; great grandsons Noah and Elijah Ledford and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will 11AM Monday at Evergreen Memorial Park with Rev. Fletcher Law officiating. The family will receive friends at Bernstein Funeral Home from 7-9PM Sunday evening.

Thomas Magill Wellman
1949-2005
Athens, Ga - Thomas Magill Wellman, 55, of 755 Epps Bridge Parkway passed away on March 25, 2005.

A native of Athens, Mr. Wellman was the son of the late Walter M. and Carroll Magill Wellman, Jr. He was also preceded in death by his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Walter M. Wellman, Sr and Mr. and Mrs. Daniel H. Magill, Sr. He served in the United States Marine Corps during Vietnam and received a purple heart. He was a retired Real Estate Agent, former member of the YMCA and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Athens.

Survivors include sisters, Oby Wellman Dupree, David, of Bogart and Betsy Wellman Calhoun, Murray, of Columbus, brother Walter M. Wellman III, Susan, of Monroe, aunts and uncles Mr. and Mrs. William H. Voegeli, Mrs. Meme Wellman Smith, Mrs. Ruth Wellman Morris, Mr. and Mrs. Dan H. Magill, Sr., nieces and nephews Mr. and Mrs. Murray A. Calhoun, IV, Mr. and Mrs. Tom W. Calhoun, Mr. and Mrs. John S. Calhoun, Mr. and Mrs. Walter W. Calhoun, Mary Carroll Dillard Murray, Taylor, ;Sharon Dillard Lindell, Keith, ; Betsy Dillard Bahnsen, Ben, ; Laura Wellman Williams, Zane, ; Carroll Anne Wellman Sowerby, Joe; Liza Wellman; 15 great nieces and nephews and 3 step nieces and nephews Beth Dupree Wilson, Pat; Amy Dupree Bertolini, Paul and their two children; David Jackson Dupree, Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 11AM Tuesday at Oconee Hill cemetery with Rev. Ben Parker, pastor of the Bogart Christian Church, and Rev. Joe Berry representing the First Presbyterian Church of Athens officiating. The family will receive friends 6-8PM Monday at Bernstein.

Richard Vance Wellman
1922-2005
Richard Vance Wellman, 82, renowned legal educator and scholar, passed away June 3, 2005 in Athens, Georgia.

He was born on September 10, 1922 in Worthington, Ohio, son of Burton Singley and Blanche Gardner Wellman. He received his Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan in 1949.

Wellman was a nationally recognized figure in the fields of probate, trusts and real property. He was the Robert Gotten Alston Professor of Law at the University of Georgia Law School from 1974 to 1990, after serving on the University of Michigan law faculty from 1954 to 1974. A life member with the National Conference of Commissioners of Uniform State Laws, he also served as a Commissioner for the States of Michigan (1970-1974) and Georgia (1974-2005). Professor Wellman was the Reporter and principal drafter of the Uniform Probate Code, promulgated by the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws in 1969 and several times thereafter. The Code has been enacted in its entirety in over 20 states and substantial portions of it are law in virtually every state. From 1972 to 1990, Professor Wellman served as Educational Director of the Joint Editorial Board for the Uniform Probate Code and, from 1990-98 he served as the Executive Director of the Joint Editorial Board. From 1969 until his death, he was tireless in his efforts in supporting legislative adoption of the UPC. He was active in the American Law Institute and the American Bar Association.

A resident of Athens, Georgia since 1975, Wellman was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, *lhe Athens Torch Club and the Athens Country Club. He was also a longtime member of the St. John's Cove community at Otsego Lake, Michigan, where he pursued his avocations of fishing, sailing and home repair.

A devoted husband and father, he married the former Natalie Lancaster Robertson in 1984, following the death of his first wife Louise Dewey Laylin. Wellman is survived by his wife Natalie; his sister Marcia MacMulljem of Ann Arbor, Ml; his daughters Martha (Jim) Wellman of Tallahassee, FL; Anne (John) Walker of Tecumseh, Ml; Jane (Jeff) Wellman of Bethesda, MD; Sarah (Ted) Yoder of Midland, Ml; his sons Peter (Mary) Wellman of Stone Mountain, GA; Charles (Lisa) Wellman of Charleston, SC; his step-daughter Natalie (Peter) Thomas of Wilmington, DE; stepA¬sons John Robertson of Lakewood, WA; Yancey (Beth) Robertson of Abbeville, SC; Thomas (Ellie) Robertson of Mesa, AZ; 16 grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. He was predeceased by his grandson Charles Wellman. Memorial services will be held on Sunday, June 12, at the First Presbyterian Church at 3:00 p.m. Donations in lieu of flowers should be made to the Uniform Law Foundation, 211 E. Windy Whitfield
1948-2004
Athens, GA - Windy Whitfield, 56, of 405 Greystone Terrace died Monday, November 15, 2004.

A native of Kingsport, TN, Ms. Whitfield was a daughter of Fred and Mandy Solomon of Kingsport, TN. She was employed as a flight attendant for U.S. Airways for thirty-four years and was of the Baptist Faith. She was preceded in death by her sister, Evelyn S. Bowyer.

Survivors include her daughter, Lauren Ashley Whitfield of Athens; her sisters: Marty Carter of Athens, Maxine Minor of Charleston, SC, Rose Morrill of Davenport, IA; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Memorial Services will be held 4:00 pm Saturday, November 20, 2004 at St. James United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jerry Varnado officiating.

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 at the home of Dr. Jeff and Marty Carter, 105 Raintree Court, Athens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Evelyn S. Bowyer Scholarship Found, c/o Georgia State University Foundation, University Plaza, Atlanta, GA 30303-3083.

Elbert Newton Whitmore Jr.
1915-2005
Elbert Newton Whitmore Jr., 89, of Riverhill Drive died Wednesday, July 13, 2005.

Mr. Whitmire, a native of Greenville, SC, was the son of the late Elbert and Harriet Wilson Whitmire, Sr. and was preceded in death by his wife Louise Verdel Whitmire and sister Lucy Whitmire Outlaw.

A 1936 graduate of the University of Georgia, Mr. Whitmire served, as a major, under Gen. George Patton in the 66th Armored Regiment of the 2nd Armored Division. He also served in North Africa, Sicily, and France and was injured in St. Lou, France. Mr. Whitmire owned and operated Whitmire Furniture Company for over 46 years, was a member of the Clarke County Planning Commission, The Athens Country Club and Athens City Club. He was also the past president of the Georgia Retail Furniture Association, a member of the retired Officers Club and a member of the Athens First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include son and daughter in law, Elbert and Linda Whitmire, III of Athens; daughter and son in law Florence and Wayne Wier of Fernandina Beach, FL; 4 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11AM Saturday at the Athens First United Methodist with Rev. Grady Wigley and Rev. Wesley Stephens officiating. A private family interment will follow in Oconee Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Bernstein from 6-8PM Friday. The family asks that in lieu of flowers for contributions to be made to the First United Methodist Church Endowment Fund, 327 N. Lumpkin Street, Athens, Ga 30601.

Members of the Tuck's Sunday School Class will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Joseph A. Wilfong
1940-2004
Joseph Avery Wilfong, Jr., age 64, of Birmingham, Alabama, died Thursday, May 13, 2004, after a brief illness. A native of Athens, Mr. Wilfong was the son of Kathleen Henson Wilfong and the late Joseph Avery Wilfong, Sr. He was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Avery Wilfong III. He graduated from Athens High School and then from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a B.S. degree in industrial engineering. After college, Mr. Wilfong entered the United States Marine Corps and obtained the rank of first lieutenant. Upon receiving an honorable discharge, he relocated to Birmingham and remained there for the rest of his life. He began work in the computer industry with IBM and continued in that field for his entire career. Mr. Wilfong was a long-time member and elder of Shades Valley Presbyterian Church in Birmingham. He was also an avid golfer.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include: mother of his children, Lydia W. Wilfong; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara W. Fletcher and Thomas M. Fletcher III; daughter, Laura E. Wilfong; granddaughter, Elizabeth Avery Fletcher; grandson, Thomas M. Fletcher IV, all of Birmingham; sister and brother-in-law, Jane W. and R. Kipling Mann; brother, W. Thomas Wilfong; and nephew, Joseph T. Mann all of Athens.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 17, 2004, in Oconee Hill cemetery in Athens, with the Reverend Joseph C. Berry officiating.

The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 at Bernstein Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Athens First Presbyterian Church, P. O. Box 1592, Athens, Georgia 30603 or to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 2625 Cumberland Parkway, Ste 205, Atlanta, GA 30339.

Alice Mazzella Williams
1904-2004
Athens, Georgia - Alice Mazzella Williams, 99, died Saturday, September 18, 2004 at Walton Medical Center.

Mrs. Williams was born on the Isle of Ponza, Italy, on November 1; 1904.She was preceded in death by her husband Walter Williams, Sr., and siblings, John Mazzella, Joseph Mazzella, Anthony Mazzella, Sally Romano and Anna Gagner.

Memorial Services will be at a later date.

She is survived by her sons, Walter Williams and wife Susan of Athens, GA, and Robert Williams and wife, Helen of Kalkaska, MI., grandchildren, Jeffrey Williams of Greensboro, NC, Shari Messer and husband Paul of Athens, GA, Karen Sandoli and husband Bryan of Napa, CA. Daniel Williams and wife Carol of Kaneohe, HI, Amy Fiddler and husband Gordon of Romeo, MI and Glen Williams and wife Mercy of St. Clair Shores, MI., Great grandchildren Hayden and Conley Messer.

Leatus Wibanks
1923-2004
Athens, GA - Leatus Saunders Wilbanks, 80. of Kings Road died Monday, October 11, 2004.

A native of Jackson County, Mr. Wilbanks was the son of the late Walter and Lois Davis Wilbanks. He retired after 25 years with the Westinghouse Electric in Quality Control. At present he was co-owner of Jack & Jill Child Care Center. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy where he served in World War II, active in the Boy Scouts of America, and an avid fisherman. He was a member of Beech Haven Baptist Church and a loving and patient husband, father and grandfather.

Survivors include his wife, Clara Beavers Wilbanks of Athens; sons: Mike Wilbanks and James Nelson Wilbanks both of Bogart; daughters: Connie Diane West of Watkinsville and Wanda Jane Nunn of Bogart; sister, Geneva Wilson of Albertville, AL; nine grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, October 14, 2004 at 4:00 p.m. at Beech Haven Baptist Church with Dr. Stewart Simms, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will grandsons and nephews.

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 9:00 at Bernstein Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Atlanta Area Chapter of the Alzheimer Association, 1925 Century Blvd, Ste 10, Atlanta, GA 30345.

1927-2005
Hull, Ga - Edward Lamar Williamson, age 77, Williamson Dr passed away on Sunday January 23, 2005.

A native of Madison County he was the son of the late Leitus and Nobie Booth Williamson. A sister, Margaret Harrison, preceded him in death. Mr. Williamson was a US Army Veteran and was retired from Kendall Inc. where he was employed as a maintenance electrician.

Survivors include his wife Joyce Hardeman Williamson, of Hull; daughters and sons in law Brenda and Marc Kanne of Atlanta; Beverly and Ranel Parks of Athens; Beth and Mike Kittle of Athens; Laura and Royce Bray of Hull; daughter Becky Clark of Athens son and daughter in law Steve and Sharon Williamson of Commerce and son Woody Williamson of Hull; 14 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11AM Tuesday at the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home with Rev. Barry Black officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 6-8 PM Monday at Bernstein Funeral Home.

Sue Daniell Zuber
1904-2004
Bogart, Ga - Sue Daniell Zuber, age 100, of Luke Circle passed away on September 20, 2004.

A native of Oconee County, Mrs. Zuber was the daughter of the late Osceola and Mollie Sims Daniell. Her husband, William Grier Zuber, preceded her in death. Mrs. Zuber was a long time member of the Bogart First Baptist Church. Her interest were many, over the years she taught many crafts. She made ceramic Bulldogs for the UGA Bookstore for over 20 years, starting the year that Vince Dooley came to UGA. She also had her own ceramic shop and taught ceramics to many of her friends.

Sue loved the community spirit and fellowship Bogart had to offer. She was president of the Bogart High School PTA, Bogart H.S. Alumni, the school where she graduated in 1922. She helped organize the Bogart Home Demonstration Club, the Bogart Community Club and the first Bogart Library.

Sue married her childhood sweetheart, Grier, a career Navy man. They had a very fulfilling life together, with a son and daughter, Don and Janet. Others left to mourn her death are daughter–in- law, Cora Nell Zuber and granddaughter Cindy and Matt Hardigree, son-in-law Bob Luke and granddaughters Connie and Eddie Thomas and Ginger and Billy Andrews. Six great grandchildren Shelley and Brittany Baker, Anna Leigh Hardigree, Jenny and Carol Thomas and Luke Andrews.

“She was yours Lord and not my own, you have done me no wrong, I thank you for this gift of love, you gave me for so long.”

Funeral services will be held at 3PM Thursday at the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home with Rev. Mark Fite and Rev. Ted Tedder officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen memorial Park. The family will receive friends 6-8 PM Wednesday at Bernstein Funeral Home.

Mr. Michael A. (Mike) Knowles of Conyers died Saturday, August 20, 2011. He was preceded in death by daughter, Margaret Ann Knowles; son, Michael Gary Knowles; and granddaughter, Cari Hope Dembrosky. He is survived by daughter, Jesica & Tony Toy, Dallas, Brandi Knowles, Dallas; lifetime companion, Debbie Mathis; sister, Linda Gladue, Snellville; brother, Richard Gill, Conyers; grandchildren, Alexis Michaela Dembrosky, Hannah Toy, Hogan Toy, Carissa (KK) Knowles. Mr. Knowles was an active member of Bethel Christian Church and was well loved in his community. Memorial service will be held Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at 6 p.m. at Bethel Christian Church with Rev. Ken Stokes officiating.
