Erasmus E. "E.E." Griffin
Mr. Erasmus E. "E.E." Griffin, 80, of Gibson died Monday, April 1, 2002, at the University Hospital, Augusta.

Mr. Griffin, a native of Glascock County, was a WW II Army veteran. He was a member of Gibson First Baptist Church. He served the Bank of Gibson for over 50 years and retired as president and chairman. He was a member of the Gibson Masonic Lodge #257. He was a former member of the Georgia House of Representatives for Glascock County. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1942.

The funeral was April 3 at 2 p.m. at Gibson First Baptist Church with the Dr. Gary Hadden officiating. Burial will be in the Gibson City Cemetery.

Survivors include three sons; Ronald Terry Griffin, Augusta, Skip Griffin, Warrenton, and Lee Griffin, Gibson; and three grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Ronnie Hadden, Ben Hadden, Eddie Miller, Wayne McDonald, O.W. Hodge and David Rabun.

Honorary pallbearers were the Glascock County High School Class of 1938.

Memorials may be made to the Georgia Special Olympics, 3772 Pleasantdale Road, Suite 195, Atlanta, Ga., 30340 or to the Gibson First Baptist Church in care of Mrs. Joyce Adams, 3916 Eley Road, Gibson, Ga. 30810.

Sheppard Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Annie Ruth Vining Mitchell
Mrs. Annie Ruth Vining Mitchell of Wadley died Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at her residence.

The funeral was April 8 at 1 p.m. at Hudson Mortuary in Wadley.

Survivors include six daughters, Dessie M. Scott and Ella M. Tomlin, Wadley, Alma J. Moore, Shirley A. Evans, Annette Barnes and Eunice Coney, all of Riverdale; seven sons, Isaac Mitchell Jr., Greenville, Miss., Richard L. Mitchell, Detroit, Mich., Eddie L. Mitchell, Sparta, Norman Mitchell, Atlanta, Robert L. Mitchell, Donald Mitchell and Kimothy T. Mitchell, Wadley; two sisters, Lucy Walthour, Aiken, S.C. and Tescola Smith, Graniteville, S.C.; three brothers, Ralph Vining and Joe Vining, Brooklyn, N.Y. and Willie Vining, Aiken; 32 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Mildred Gilmore Nelson
Mrs. Mildred Gilmore Nelson of Wadley died Saturday, March 30, 2002, at Doctor's Hospital in Augusta.

The funeral was April 6 at 2 p.m. at Old Bethel Baptist Church, Bartow, with the Rev. Kenneth Davis officiating.

Survivors include three daughters, Mary Nelson Davis and Willie Mae Nelson, Hollywood, Fla., and Hattie Mae Nelson Boone, Manhattan, NY; two sons, Roy Nelson, Hollywood, Fla., and Larry Nelson, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; one sister, Gladys Gilmore Howard, Wadley; two brothers, Willie James Gilmore, Bartow, and N.J. Gilmore, Hollandale, Fla.; 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Hudson Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements.

Geraldine Louise Lockhart Ponder
Mrs. Geraldine Louise Lockhart Ponder died on Wednesday, April 3, 2002, in Wadley.

The funeral was April 9 at 2:30 p.m. at San Clair Baptist Church, Wadley.

Survivors include her husband, Murphy Ponder; two daughters, Phyllis Johnson, Augusta, and Barbara Smith, Staten Island, NY; one brother, James Lockhart, Manhattan, NY; and three grandchildren.

Hudson Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements.

Henry Grady Bowers
Mr. Henry Grady Bowers, 89, of Washington died Thursday, April 11, 2002, at Wills Memorial Hospital in Washington.
Mr. Bowers, a native of Oglethorpe County, had lived in Wilkes County most of his life. He was a member of the Danburg Baptist Church where he was a deacon and former Sunday School teacher. He was an Army veteran of WW II. He fought at the Invasion of Normandy with Company I of the 23rd Infantry Badge and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with three Bronze Stars. He was a retired receiving clerk at the Royal Manufacturing Company in Washington.

Survivors include his wife, Nell Hester Bowers; one daughter, Sherri B. Dobbs, Morrow; one son, Rev. Henry Kenneth Bowers, Jasper, Fla.; two sisters, Estelle Amos, Athens, and Rennie Jordan, Toccoa; and four brothers, Robert Bowers, Cherry Valley, Ill., John Bowers, Lafayette, Calif., Roy Bowers, Hartwell, and Bill Bowers, Mitchell.

Memorials may be made to the Danburg Baptist Church cemetery Fund, c/o Gloria Ware, 164 Bradford Road, Tignal, Ga. 30668.

Hopkins Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Lila Cheely Hattaway
Mrs. Lila Cheely Hattaway, 87, of Mitchell died Thursday, April 11, 2002, at Warrenton Health & Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Hattaway, a native of Hancock County, was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Nebo. She was also a member of the ladies circle at Mt. Nebo.

The funeral was April 14 at 3 p.m. at Mount Nebo Primitive Baptist Church with the Elder Lee Price officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include one son, George Hattaway, Clearwater, S.C.; two daughters, Kathleen "Kay" Smith, Augusta, and Bernice H. Marsh, Thomson; 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and four great great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were her grandsons.

Sheppard Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Juanita Cummins
Mrs. Juanita Cummins, 78, of Thomson died Saturday, April 13, 2002, in Doctors Hospital.

Mrs. Cummins, a native of Bath, S.C., had moved to Thomson in 1969. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Clay Cummins, and her son, William Harvey Cummins.

The funeral was April 16 at 1 p.m. in the Curtis Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Leo Carpenter officiating. Burial was in Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include three daughters, Donna Brassell and Paula Simak, both from Gibson, and Kim Cummings, Thomson; her sister, Myrtle Lokey, Boneville; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Kenneth Bradley, Walter D. Lokey, John S. Lokey, William Lokey, Joe Lokey, James Barrow and Buck Daughtry.

Eula R. Hughes
Mrs. Eula R. Hughes, 82, of North Augusta, S.C., died Thursday, April 11, 2002.

Mrs. Hughes, a native of Waynesboro, had lived in North Augusta for the past 45 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of North Augusta where she was a member of the Charity Sunday School Class and the Sheffield Club. She was a member of the Golden Glo Chapter #76 OES.

The funeral was April 14 at 2 p.m. at the Stephen D. Posey Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry T. Matthews officiating. Burial was in Pineview Memorial Gardens.

Survivors include one daughter, Maryann Thomas Sapp, Louisville; three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild.

Pallbearers were Craig Lamar, Joe Hamilton, Joe Foss, Max Eugster, Jerry Hendrix and Neri Yon.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the Golden Glo Chapter #76 OES and members of the Charity Sunday School Class.

Roy Jordan Jones
Mr. Roy Jordan Jones, 80, of Louisville died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at the V.A. Memorial Medical Center in Augusta.

Mr. Jones, a native of Washington County, had lived most of his life in Jefferson County. He was a former service station and sandwich shop owner; a member of the Louisville United Methodist Church, Stonewall Masonic Lodge #98 and was a WWII Army veteran. He was preceded in death by his parents, Waldo and Pearl Wilson Jones.

Graveside services were held April 12 at 11 a.m. at Jefferson Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Danny Treadway officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Watkins Jones; a son, Mickey Jones, Louisville; a daughter, Sherri Handberry, Wadley; a brother, Russell Jones, Sandersville; a sister, Rheba Perdue, Americus; and three grandchildren.

Honorary pallbearers were Masons.

Southern Heritage Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Charlie Whitener
Mr. Charlie Whitener, 68, of Gibson died Monday, April 8, 2002.

Mr. Whitener was a retired auto technician and served in the U.S. Army. He was an avid outdoorsman and hunter.

A memorial service was held April 11 at 1 p.m. at James Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Greg Bentley officiating.

Survivors include his wife, June Whitener, Gibson; two sons, Allen Whitener, Hephzibah, and Chris Whitener, Keysville; three daughters, Kay Willis, Gibson, Teresa Dobbs, Hephzibah, and Joan Milton, Torrington, Wyo.; five sister, Ann Cobb, Augusta, Jean Lanier, Warrenville, S.C., Mary Willard, Sardis, Miss., and Lucille Leiguds and Geraldine Fail, both of Augusta; one brother, Tommy Whitener, Augusta; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, John Whitener Sr.

Annie Long Ruff
Mrs. Annie Long Ruff of Louisville died Monday, April 8, 2002.

Mrs. Ruff was a member of Pine Hill Baptist Church where she was an usher and a missionary.

The funeral was April 13 at 2 p.m. at Pine Hill Baptist Church and cemetery with the Rev. P. Sparks officiating.

Survivors include her children, Willie Ruff, Lessie Harmon, Marion Ruff, Betty Ruff, Louisville, Murtis Nesbitt, Fla., Ethel Boatwright and Janice Murray of Wrens, Willeva Easterling, Hyattsville, Md., a sister, Ruby Lowery, Louisville; 21 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Davis Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Willie Albert McGruder Sr.
Mr. Willie Albert McGruder Sr., 85, of Keysville died Tuesday, April 9, 2002.

The funeral was April 13 at 3:30 p.m. at Union Bethel Baptist Church, Louisville, with the Rev. Bobby Williams officiating. Burial was in Walden Grove Cemetery.

Garrer Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Willie Eva Roberts
Mrs. Willie Eva Roberts of Avera died Sunday, April 7, 2002.

The funeral was April 10 at 3 p.m. at Magnolia Baptist Church with Pastor Perry Daniels Jr. officiating.

Survivors include her husband, Lindsey Roberts Sr.; one daughter, Evangelist Janice Beasley; three sons, Richard Roberts, Lindsey Roberts Jr., and Michael Roberts; one brother, Willie Braddy Jr.; and five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Freeman Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
