James Ransom "Jimmy" Harrell, Jr
Mr. James Ransom "Jimmy" Harrell, Jr., 81 of 308 Bendix Ave, Louisville, passed away Sunday, September 8, 2002, in the University Hospital in Augusta. Funeral Services will be 11:00 am Thursday, September 12, in the Louisville First Baptist Church, with burial in the Louisville City Cemetery, Rev. Larry Montgomery officiating.

Mr. Harrell was born April 7, 1921 in Louisville, the son of the late James R. and Ruby Welch Harrell. He had worked as an insurance agent for the Queensborough Insurance Agency. He was a member and past president of the Louisville Kiwanis Club and a member and deacon of the Louisville First Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret D. Harrell. He was a faithful friend and loving father.

Survivors include 3 daughters, Mrs. Patricia Harrell-Lakatos of Kailua, Hi.; Mrs. Emily Crossfield of Lakeland Fl.; Mrs. Eugenia Weiskircher of Roswell, a nephew, Lin Dixon of Athens; a devoted friend, Virginia Dudley of Louisville.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 pm Wednesday September 11, at the funeral home.

The Louisville Kiwanis Club will serve as Pallbearers.

Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Louisville is in charge of arrangements.

Enoch H. Beckworth
Mr. Enoch H. Beckworth, 58, of Wadley died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.
Mr. Beckworth was retired from Thiele Kaolin as a lab technician. He was of the Baptist faith and was a member of Wrens First Assembly of God Church.

The funeral was Sept. 14 at 11 a.m. at James Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Henry B. Sahffer Sr. and Dan R. Watson officiating. Burial was in the Gospel Chapel cemetery in Avera.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Beckworth; three children, William J. (Martha) Beckworth, Thomson, Deborah K. (Milton) Hobbs, Thomson, and Phillip A. (Pamela) Beckworth, Blythe; three step-children, Cindy Morgan, David Storey and Kathy Kendall; two brothers, Thomas Beckworth and Paul Beckworth, both of Stapleton; one sister, Priscilla Irby, Gibson; and 13 grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Phillip Allen, Danny Beckworth, Richie Cowart, Brian Irby, Tommy Neal and Carl Pennington.

Memorials may be made to the Gospel Chapel cemetery Fund, c/o Curtis Thigpen, 6276 Sunset Blvd, Avera, GA 30803.

Tressie Hardy
Mrs. Tressie Hardy, 80, of Atlanta died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, in an Atlanta Nursing Home.

Mrs. Hardy was formerly of Wrens. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Chance.

The funeral will be Sept. 21 at 2 p.m. at James Funeral Home Chapel.

Survivors include her children, L.G. Moore, Louis Collins and Patti Collins; her sisters, brothers and sisters-in-law, Doris Williford, Betty Ann Kemp, Jimmy Farrer, Buddy Farrer, Pauline Farrer and Jeanne Farrer; a granddaughter and three great-grandchildren.

James Whitford Haynes
Mr. James Whitford Haynes, 62, of Matthews died Monday, Sept. 9, 2002, at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital in Augusta.

Mr. Haynes was a Baptist by religion. He worked for many years as a supervisor with Jefferson Contractor.

The funeral was Sept. 13 at 3 p.m. at James Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Bill Arrington and Terry McCauglin officiating. Burial was in the Wrens Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Geraldine Haynes; two sons, James W. Haynes Jr. and Charles T. Haynes; one daughter, Brenda G. Ballard; three brothers, Charles Haynes, William (Bill) Haynes and Richard Haynes; five sisters, Mary Kuhns, Frances Jackson, Edna Muhar, Martha Jackson and Laura Pardue; nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Pallbearers were James Haynes Jr., Charles Haynes, Dennis Miller, James Miller, Phillip Haynes, Doug Ballard and Charles Miller.

James Screws
Mr. James Screws of Augusta died Friday, Sept. 13, 2002, at the VA Medical Center Uptown Division.

Mr. Screws was born in Jefferson County. He was a Baptist. He served with honor in the U.S. Navy during WW II, he was a signalman and visual communication instructor and builder. He was a First Class Petty Officer.

The funeral was Sept. 15 at 1 p.m. in the Thomas L. King Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Samuel E. Yaun officiating. Burial was in the Bethesda Primitive Baptist Churchyard Cemetery, Wadley.

Survivors include a son, Mike Davis; a daughter, Patricia Rhodes; two sisters, Sibyl S. Miller, Martinez, and Betty Ruth S. Cooper, Clearwater, SC; and three brothers, Thomas D. Screws and Ted H. Screws, Martinez, and Fred L. Screws Jr., Evans.

Sally Land "Little Mama" Trammell
Mrs. Sally Land "Little Mama" Trammell, 94, of Louisville died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002, in The Heritage of Old Capitol Nursing Home.

Mrs. Trammell, a native of Glascock County, was a homemaker. She was the wife of the late James Robert "Pop" Trammell. She was of the Baptist faith.

The funeral was Sept. 12 at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Southern Heritage Funeral Home, Louisville. Burial was in the Louisville City Cemetery.

Survivors include four grandchildren, Willie K. Marsh, Bartow, Wayne Marsh, Douglas, Jimmy Marsh, Louisville and Vickie Boose, Dearing; and five great-grandchildren, Tammy Marsh, Bartow; Benji Slater, Collowhee, NC, Kevin Marsh, Louisville, Hali Boose, Dearing, and Courtney Boose, Dearing.

Pallbearers were Dr. Polhill, Keith Boose, Terry Moore, David Gunn, James Wheeler and Jerry Claxton.

Shirley Margarette Prigden Tharpe
Mrs. Shirley Margarette Prigden Tharpe, 88, of De Funiak Springs, Fla., died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, in Pensacola, Fla.

Mrs. Tharpe was born Sept. 5, 1913, in Geneva County, Ala., to Enoch Jesse Pridgen and Willie Celesta Whittle Prigden. She was a member of Glendale Baptist Church. She had lived in Walton County, Fla., since 1951. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert L. Tharpe; two sons, James Albert Tharpe and Dwayne Howard Tharpe; her parents, Enoch and Willie Pridgen; one granddaughter, Thea Fredickson; two brothers, Y.J. Pridgen and Alva Pridgen; and one sister, Cremonia Pridgen.

The funeral was Aug. 31 at 2 p.m. at Glendale Baptist Church with the Revs. Uvonne Carroll and Tim Hill officiating. Burial was in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church cemetery in Geneva County, Fla.

Survivors include her twin daughters, Mrs. Hilma (Baxter) Hill, Wrens, and Mrs. Hilda (Hayward "Willie") Williams, Pensacola; four sons, Vinson (Edie) Tharpe, St. Petersburn, Fla., Edward S. (Becky) Tharpe, Richmond Hill, Carroll "Bo" (Becky), Tharpe, Bradenton, Fla., and Daniel L. (Hillary) Tharpe, Glendale, Fla.; one daughter-in-law, Carolyn F. Tharpe, Pensacola; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren.

Clary-Godwin-Commander Funeral Home in De Funiak Springs was in charge of the arrangements.

Laura Hadden Bragg Koch
Mrs. Laura Hadden Bragg Koch, 76, of Gibson died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, at University Hospital in Augusta.

The funeral was Sept. 12 at 11 a.m. at the Lowe Funeral Home with the Rev. Randy Dunaway officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Glascock County.

Alvin T. Downs Jr.
Mr. Alvin T. Downs Jr., 69, of Mitchell died Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002, at University Hospital in Augusta.
Mr. Downs, a native of Warren County, was a rural letter carrier and a member of Friendship Baptist Church where he was a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He was a member of Gods Extended Hands and past president of Rural Mail Carriers association. He also served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict.

The funeral was Sept. 22 at 3 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church with the Revs. Tommy Harwell and Jim King officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Nell Stewart Downs; two sons, John Alvin (Carol Hays) Downs and William Arthur Downs, both of Mitchell; his loyal care taker, Mr. A.C. Ivey; one sister, Beulah D. Poole, Mitchell; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Ralph Mauldin III, Marc Mauldin, Bill Chester, John Woos, David Crosby and Larry Swint.

Jake Warthen
Rev. Jake Warthen, 52, of New York City died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, in New York.

The Rev. Warthen was a native of Jefferson County.

A memorial service will be held Sept. 28 at 10:30 a.m. at Salter's Grove Baptist Church in Bartow.

Thelma Dent Borders English
Mrs. Thelma Dent Borders English, 88, of Louisville died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, at Jefferson Hospital.

Mrs. English, a native of McDuffie County, ran a day care home for kids. She was a member of Walden's United Methodist Church. She was the daughter of the late Oscar and Berta Dent and the wife of the late Thomas English.

Graveside services were held Sept. 24 at 2 p.m. at Walden's United Methodist Church cemetery with the Rev. Marvin Goodman officiating.

Survivors include a son, James D. Borders, Dillard; three granddaughters and five great-grandchildren; and close friends Billy and Barbara Jordan, Christy and Daniel.

Southern Heritage Funeral Home, Louisville, was in charge of the arrangements.

Tressie Hardy
Mrs. Tressie Hardy, 80, formerly of Wrens, died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, in an Atlanta Nursing Home.

The funeral was Sept. 21 at 2 p.m. at James Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. James M. Ford officiating.

Survivors include her children, L.G. Moore, Louis Collins, Patti Collins; a son-in-law Joel Koenig; her sisters, brothers and sisters-in-law, Jimmy Farrer, Buddy Farrer, Pauline Farrer and Jeanne Farrer; a granddaughter and three great-grandchildren.

James Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Robert Jackson Sr.
Mr. Robert Jackson Sr. of Wadley died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002.

The funeral was Sept. 22 at 2 p.m. at Hudson Mortuary Chapel in Wadley with the Rev. Mack Thomas Jr. officiating.

Survivors include two daughters, Fannie Bell Jackson, Wadley, and Lillian McReed, Midville; two sons, Robert Jackson Jr., Wadley, and John W. Gibbons, Ft. Myers, Fla.; one foster son, Grady Jackson Jr., Hollywood, Fla.; 12 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Ponda Raley Pittman-Russell
Mrs. Ponda Raley Pittman-Russell, 72, of Augusta died Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002, at her residence.

Mrs. Russell was born in Augusta and spent the majority of her life in Avera. She was also a former Southern Bell Telephone operator and an operator with Doctor's Answering Service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Nally (Rock) Russell.

A graveside service was held Sept. 19 at 3 p.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Park with the Rev. Marion Jay officiating.

Survivors include a daughter, Darlene (Billy) Masters; five grandchildren, Rhonda Watkins, Jamie Howard, Rusty Masters, Brandon Masters and Brittany Masters; and six great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Rusty Masters, Brandon Masters, Justin Watkins, Gregory Howard, John Long and Norman Weaver.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association Augusta, 1899 Central Ave., Augusta, GA 30904.

Poteet Funeral Home-South Chapel, 3465 Peach Orchard Road, Augusta, was in charge of the arrangements.

Jimmy B. Smith
Mr. Jimmy B. Smith, 68, of Bartow died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, at his residence.

Mr. Smith, a native of Jefferson County, was the son of the late George B. and Myrtle Palmer Smith. He had retired from the Amoco Oil Company and the Pro Gas Company. He was a member of Parkers United Methodist Church.

The funeral was Sept. 21 at 11 a.m. at the Chapel of Southern Heritage Funeral Home Louisville Chapel. Burial was in Parkers United Methodist Church cemetery with the Rev. Billy Howell officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ruth W. Smith; a son, Gary Smith, Louisville; two daughters, Mrs. Barbara Bowles, Louisville, and Kay Deriso, Bartow; a brother, Terry Smith, Stellaville; three sisters, Mrs. Annette S. Livingston, Louisville, Mrs. Margaret Miller, Stapleton, and Mrs. Betty S. Cooper, Bartow; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Eddie Eastmead, David Chance, Bubba Black, Bill Thomson, Alan Wasden and Bubba Williams.
