Mrs. Gladys Phillips, 76, of Stapleton died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003, at University Hospital.

Mrs. Phillips, a native of Edgefield County, SC, was a Baptist and a homemaker and caretaker.

The funeral was Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. at James Chapel Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Riley officiating. Burial was in the Bellevue Cemetery.

Survivors include her daughter, Theresa J. (Herbert) May, Evans; one sister, Rosie Hall, Evans; one brother, Wilton Holmes, Augusta; and two grandchildren, Amy May and Christopher May.

Pallbearers were Tony Wheeler, Roy Wheeler, Phillip Wheeler, Gerald Kitchens, Chris May, Randy Gay, Herbert May, Chris Brooks and Danny Hall.

Willie James "Weaber" Jackson
Mr. Willie James "Weaber" Jackson, 57, of Louisville died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, at Jefferson Hospital.

Mr. Jackson was born in McIntosh County but lived in Jefferson County and New York.

The funeral was Feb. 18 at 1 p.m. at Davis Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Tommie Fleming officiating. Burial was in the New Fleming Baptist Church Cemetery.

Survivors include his parents, Ella Mae Morgan and Mitchell Morgan Sr., Louisville; one son, Alexander Jackson, Augusta; siblings, Lillie Moore, Delaware, Carrie Dunlap, Scottsdale, Ann "Dot" Morgan and Delaine Morgan, Louisville, Louvenia Sims and Linda Dennis, East Point, Mitchell Morgan Jr., Forest Park; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles and cousins.

Davis Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Charlie Otis Woodard
Mr. Charlie Otis Woodard of Wadley died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003.

The funeral was Feb. 15 at 11 a.m. at Hudson Mortuary Chapel in Wadley.

Survivors include eight daughters, Ruby Thomas and Betty Seafus, Louisville, Joann Norris, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Pauline Day, Hollywood, Fla., Mary Trimble, Detroit, Mich., Kathy Williams and Rosetta Lewis, Wadley, and Bessie Phillips, Philadelphia, Pa.; five sons, Craig Woodard and Rev. John Wesley Lee, Wadley, Charles Woodard and Otis Woodard, Hollywood, Fla., and Joe Seeb, Brunswick; 41 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Hudson Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements.

Maxine Grimes Williams
Mrs. Maxine Grimes Williams of College Park died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003.

The funeral was Feb. 15 at Brinson Hill Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Wallace Williams; one son, James H. Grimes IV, College Park; one daughter, LaToya Grimes, Jonesboro; her mother, Mattie Hudson, Wadley; one sister, Alma McCladdie, Augusta; three brothers, Larry Hudson, Macon, Ronnie Hudson Sr. and Farris Hudson Sr., Wadley; and four grandparents.

Hudson Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements.

Christine Stone McCoy Beasley
Mrs. Christine Stone McCoy Beasley, 64, of Wrens died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, at Jefferson Hospital.
Mrs. Beasley was a member of Wrens S.D.A. Church. She was a former employee of Stapleton Garment Company.

The funeral was Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. at Wrens Seventh Day Adventist Church with Pastor Dante' Robias officiating. Burial was in Springfield AME Church cemetery.

Survivors include seven children, Cynthia (Freddie) McCoy-Dogan, Wrens, Phyricilla Beasley (Jimmy Stone), Daphnye Beasley (Jerry Thomas), Mary (Benard) Brooks, all of Avera, Charles (Bersilla) Beasley, Hoover, Ala., Wanda Beasley (Dwane Key), Wrens, and Christine Lakeshia Beasley, Wrens; two sisters, Millie (Bill) Holloman, Philadelphia, Pa., and Mary Howard, Pompano Beach, Fla.; one brother, Andrew (Anna) Stone, Philadelphia, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Darlene Stone, Philadelphia, Pa.; 21 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Burnett Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Dera Padgett Brooks
Mrs. Dera Padgett Brooks, 77, of Avera died Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, at McDuffie Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Brooks, a native of Jefferson County, was retired from Stapleton Garment Company, and was a homemaker. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

The funeral was Feb. 19 at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Lester Clark and Donald Lumpkin officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, George L. Brooks; one son, Wade (Janice) Brooks, Avera; one daughter, Elaine (Billy) James, Martinez; two brothers, Johnny Padgett and Lanier Padgett, both of Avera; one sister, Ogle Aiken, Gibson; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Tommy Dixon, Johnny Padgett Jr., Charles Padgett, Gregg Brooks, Jeff Brooks and Etheridge Williams.

Memorials may be made to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Mrs. Bobbie Kitchens, 1092 Oak St., Avera, GA 30803.

Helen Clark
Miss Helen Clark, 88, of Louisville died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003 at Jefferson Hospital.

Miss Clark was born in Louisville. She was a librarian, was educated at Duke University, The University of Chicago, George Washington University and Emory University.

She served in World War II as a First Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps.

Graveside services were held Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. in the Louisville City cemetery with the Rev. Ed Deen officiating.

Survivors include her niece, Kathy Clark Lewis, Columbia; a great nephew and two great nieces.

Memorials may be made to the Jefferson County Historic Society.

Southern Heritage Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Shirley Ann Drayton-Leigh
Mrs. Shirley Ann Drayton-Leigh of Villa Rica died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003 at Tanner Medical Center.

Mrs. Drayton-Leigh was born in Jefferson County on March 6, 1942, to the late Mary Willie Drayton-LaFavor and the late Willie Drayton. She attended Jefferson County public schools and graduated in 1962. She joined Wrens Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church at an early age.

The funeral was Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Prospect Baptist Church in Villa Rica with Pastor J.E. Potts officiating. Burial was in Garden of Rest, Villa Rica.

Survivors include her husband, Willie Henry Leigh; two daughters, Syconia Robinson and Sonia Renee Leigh; one son, Tyrone Bernard Leigh, all of Villa Rica; five sisters, Bobbie Drayton, Nellie Ray Hall and Dolly (Dwayne) Terrel, all of Wrens, Mattie (C.W.) Frails, Harlem, and Mary Jo (Charles) Freeman, Augusta; four brothers, Leotis Hales and Eddie Drayton, both of Wrens, Billy Drayton, Md., and Otis Drayton, Washington, DC; two aunts, Rev. Bettye Jean Stephens, Wrens, and Alveda Lewis, Harlem; one god-daughter, Jacqueline Arnold; and five grandchildren, Desmond Jamal Cato, Tori Leigh, Shaonda Arnold, LaKita Reynolds and Tiffany Dunson.

Walker Wilson Evergreen Mortuary, Villa Rica, was in charge of the arrangements.

Neta Morris
Mrs. Neta Morris, 91, of Villa Rica died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, at Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton.

Mrs. Morris was born in Emanuel County and lived in Wadley from 1934 until 1998 when she moved to Villa Rica. She was a member of Wadley Baptist Church and was a homemaker.

The funeral was Feb. 22 at 11 a.m. at Wadley Baptist Church with the Revs. Joe Faulkner and Gary Simmers officiating. Burial was in the Wadley City Cemetery.

Survivors include a son, Lamar C. and Frances West Morris, Carrollton; four granddaughters, Susan Clark, Albany, Kathy Hopkins, Evans, Leigh Morris, Carrolton and Ann Morris, Richmond, Ind.; a great-granddaughter, Kimberly Clark Morse, Reston, Va.; and a great great-granddaughter, Alexis Morse, Reston, Va.

Smith Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Louie W. Godowns
Mr. Louie W. Godowns, 76, of Louisville died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, at his residence.

Mr. Godowns was born Dec. 3, 1926, in Jefferson County, the son of the late William "Bill" and Mozelle Jones Godowns. He was a retired farmer and had served in the Army during WWII. He was a member of Walden's United Methodist Church where he was a former member of the Methodist Men's Club. He was also a former member of the Louisville Lions Club and Ogeechee Valley Country Club.

The funeral was Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. at Walden's United Methodist Church with the Revs. Marvin Goodman and Horace Lairscy officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary Rabun Godowns; a son, Rickey Godowns, Louisville; a daughter, Belinda Sheram, Louisville; a brother, Wilber H. Godowns, Louisville; a sister, Betty G. Boulineau, Stellaville; four grandchildren, Dr. Mary Lynn Sheram, Augusta, Tiffany Godowns Howard, Wrens, Steven Louie Sherman, Louisville, and Trenton Rickey Godowns, Statesboro; two great-grandchildren, Trevor James Rowland, Wrens and Savannah Grace Godowns, Statesboro.

Pallbearers were Fred C. Pennington, Fay Hadden, Steve Sheram, Fay McGahee, George Samples and David Bailey.

Honorary pallbearers were the nephews of Louie and Mary Godowns along with W.G. Davis Jr., John Hattaway, Clifford Williams, Don Williams, William Rabun, Sam Rabun, Donald Hartley, Wesley New, Lawson Cook, Keith Stewart, Max Walden, L.A. Garrett, Herman Price, Beatle Bailey, Billy Samples, Johnny Gearig, Charlie Blagg, Tag Sheppard and Sheriff Gary Hutchins.

Kathleen Rushing Murphy
Mrs. Kathleen Rushing Murphy, 90, died Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, at Statesboro Nursing Home.

Mrs. Murphy was a native and lifelong resident of Bullock County. She was a homemaker and an apartment owner and manager. She was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert "Bish" Murphy.

The funeral was Feb. 20 at 11 a.m. in the Jake A. Futch Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Harold Smith and Elder Brannen Purser officiating. Burial was in the Eastside Cemetery.

Survivors include four daughters, Jan (Chuck) DeWitt, Keystone Heights, Fla., Lynn (Sam) Neville Jr., Register, Pat (Tom) Browne Jr., Louisville, and Kathy (Dennis) Moore Jr., Statesboro; 13 grandchildren, Charles DeWitt, John DeWitt, Debbie Macumber, Simeon Neville, Connie Palfy, Kathryn Neville, Amy Bettinger, Lisa Judy, Dennis Moore III, Tricia Frye, Cindy Lewis, Thomas Browne III and Bert Browne; 14 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were grandsons, Simon Neville, Dennis Moore III, Thomas Browne III, Bert Browne, Charles DeWitt and John DeWitt.

Honorary pallbearer was Grady Smith.

Billie Dye
Mr. Billie Dye, 71, of Gibson died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, at the V.A. Medical Center in Augusta.

Mr. Dye was a native of Warren County. He was an army veteran in the Korean Conflict and he was retired from Jebco Manufacturing Company in Warrenton where he worked in maintenance.

The funeral was Feb. 25 at 3 p.m. at Sheppard Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Seaman officiating. Burial was in Mill Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Shirley Kitchens Dye, Gibson; three daughters, Vickie D. Kitchens, Gibson, Billie Ann Cason, Thomson and Marilyn D. Stevenson, Lincolnton; one step-son, Terry Poole, Gibson; one sister, Betty Williams, Thomson; and 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Lester Hadden, Jimmy Newsome, Chris Griffith, Wallace Purvis, Jimmy Williams and Donald Kent.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the Gibson Masonic Lodge No. 257.

Charlie Evans
Mr. Charlie Evans, 88, of Wadley died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003 at Glendale Nursing Home.

Mr. Evans, a native of Jefferson County, was the son of the late Mrs. Molly Tarver Evans.

The funeral was Feb. 15 at 2 p.m. at the Jogresan Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Matthew Wilson officiating. Burial was in Blounts Chapel Church cemetery in Bartow.

Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Effie Lee, Milwaukee, Wis.; a devoted niece, Pauline Williams Hall, Wadley; other nieces, Shirley Brown and Barbara Wilcher, both of Wadley; nephews, Horace Batts, Elton Williams and Samuel Williams, both of Wadley; and a host of other relatives.
