Mattie Mae Lamb Chalker
Mrs. Mattie Mae Lamb Chalker, 72, of Gibson died Friday, April 4, 2003, at MCG in Augusta.
Mrs. Chalker was a native of Glascock County and a member of Magnolia Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Chalker and her parents, Russell and Thelma Lamb.
The funeral was April 7 at 11 a.m. at Magnolia Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Seaman officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include two daughters, Brenda Chalker Jones, Washington, and Linda Knotts, Gibson; two sons, Curl Chalker and Jeffery Chalker, both of Gibson; two sisters, Patsy Poss, DeFuniak Springs, Fla., and Katherine English, Augusta; four brothers, Louis Lamb, Robert Lamb, Gene Lamb and Joe Lamb, all of Augusta; and eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Rusty Chalker, Randy Lamb, Barry Lamb, Rusty Lamb, Harold Griswell and Barney Johnson.

Connie Alexander Dabney
Dr. Connie Alexander Dabney, 88, of Augusta died April 5, 2003.
Dr. Dabney, a native of Lancaster County, SC, graduated from North Greenville Junior College and Furman University; he received his Master of Theology from Southwestern Baptist Seminary and his Doctorate of Theology from Colorado Bible College. His 68-year career took him from his native South Carolina to Illinois, Georgia, Tennessee, Colorado, California and back to Georgia. While in the Denver area he founded what was to become one of the largest Southern Baptist churches in the West, the 3, 000 member Applewood Baptist Church.
His other pastorates included Second Baptist Church, West Frankfort, Ill., First Baptist Church of Blackville, SC (1945-48), Crawford Avenue BC (1948-50), Brainerd Baptist Church of Chattanooga, Tenn. (1950-58), Truett Memorial BC of Denver, Colo. (1958-59), Applewood BC, Weatridge, Colo. (1962-68), and Hillcrest Baptist Church from where he retired in 1978 after serving for eight years.
Since retiring he has served 22 churches in the Augusta area as interim pastor. He last served as pastor of Ways Baptist Church of Wrens.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred Shealy Dabney.
The funeral was April 8 at 1 p.m. at Hillcrest Baptist Church. Burial was in Westover Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Janet Lewis Dabney; two sons, Aleck Dabney, Chicago and Wade Dabney, Indianapolis; a brother Joseph E. (Suzanne) Dabney, Atlanta; a stepdaughter, Debra (Dan) Picklesimer; a stepson, Scott (Rhonda) Gillium; four grandchildren and six step-grandchildren.

Fronia Mae Haddock
Mrs. Fronia Mae Haddock, 94, of Wadley died Sunday, March 30, 2003, at Glendale Nursing Home.
A graveside service was held April 1 at 11 a.m. at the Swainsboro City Cemetery.
Survivors include a brother, Franklin Kea, Metter; and several nieces and nephews.

Mildred Holloway
Mrs. Mildred Holloway of Augusta died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at University Hospital.
Mrs. Holloway was a member of Mays Grove Baptist Church in Wrens. She served as the assistant church mother and treasurer of the church missionary and was a former member of the choir and was former president.
Survivors include her husband, Dea. Sam W. Holloway Jr.; three sons, Dwight Holloway and Travis Holloway, Augusta, and Dwain Holloway, Florence, SC; one sister, Mrs. Ruth Walker, St. Petersburg, Fla.; a grandson, Cameron Holloway, Atlanta; mother-in-law, Mrs. Olena Holloway, Louisville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Rev. Horace (Eula) Holloway, Nepolean Holloway, St. Petersburg, Fla., Noses (Dorothy) Holloway and Roosevelt Holloway, Wrens; Mrs. Earlean (Charles) Hines, Miami, Fla.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Carl "Buddy" Key
Mr. Carl "Buddy" Key, 64, of Stapleton died Sunday, April 6, 2003 in the Eisenhower Army Medical Center.
Mr. Key, a native of Gastonia County, NC, had lived in Stapleton for many years. He was a retired Navy veteran having served in the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Woodman of the World Lodge No. 982. He was a member of Little Brier Creek Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a sister, Pat Bullard.
The funeral was April 9 at 3 p.m. at Little Brier Creek Baptist Church with Dr. Randy Dunaway officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Annette K. Key; two sons, Stanley Sellers and Ron Sellers, both of Thomson; a daughter, Lynn Mayo, Norwood; a sister, Doris Blackwell, Augusta; and seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Bob Bullard, Aubrey Bullard, Jerry Bullard, Mike Lanier, Jamie Gunn and Edwin Gunn.

Callie Pollette Kindon
Mrs. Callie Pollette Kindon, 89, of Bartow died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at Fairview Park Hospital in Dublin.
Mrs. Kindon, formerly of Wadley, was born in Johnson County and had lived in Bartow for the last 40 years. She was retired from the textile manufacturing business. She was a member of Poplar Springs United Methodist Church and Woodmen of the World.
The funeral was April 3 at 4 p.m. at Colemans Chapel United Methodist Church with the Revs. Jack Key, Billy Key and Griffin Thompson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include a brother, Hugh Pollette, Swainsboro; nieces and nephews, Janice S. Scott, Jonesboro, Sue Stephens, Asheville, Kathy Palmer, Swainsboro, Sidney Stephens, Maxey and Bonnie S. Petersen, Alpharetta; and numerous other nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.

Mr. Kenneth Rooks, 74, of Thomson died Thursday, April 3, 2003 at Thomson Manor.
Mr. Rooks, a native of Jefferson County, lived in Thomson for over 30 years. He was retired manager of the Napa Auto Parts Store in Warrenton. He was a member and deacon Emeritus of Sweetwater Baptist Church.
The funeral was April 6 at 3 p.m. at Sweetwater Baptist Church with the Revs. Kenneth Garvin and J.B. Redd officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Doris B. Rooks; sons, Ray (Lynne) Rooks, Augusta, and Danny (Stephanie) Rooks, Thomson; a brother, Travis Rooks, Stapleton; and sisters Sue Purvis and Nelda Williams, Wrens.

Mr. Alvie E. Akridge, 68, of Matthews died Friday, April 11, 2003.
Mr. Akridge was a retired mechanic for Georgia-Tennessee Mining and Chemical Company.

Mr. Eugene Claude Brown, 49, of Thomson died Monday, April 7, 2003.

James Jackson Dye
Mr. James Jackson Dye died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, in Blue Ridge.
Mr. Dye, a native of Wrens, served in the US Navy during WWII. He was employed by Pan American World Airways in Miami, Fla. until his retirement in 1978. He moved to Blue Ridge in 1978 and worked part time with his son's company, Dye Electric. He was a 40-year member of the Mason organization and of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Sarah Newsome Dye, his wife, Hazel L. Johnson Dye, brothers, Earl, Alton and Ollie Dye, and a sister, Minnie Lee Daniels.
A private service will be held at a later date.
Survivors include two sons, James (Karen) Dye, Blue Ridge, David (Candy) Dye, Cartersville; a daughter, Cathy (Hugh) Alexander, Arden, NC; a sister, Louise Manchebo, Ceres, Calif.; and six grandchildren.

Mr. Jerry Johnson, 49, of Gibson died Saturday, April 12, 2003, at the Gibson Health and Rehab Center in Gibson.
Mr. Johnson, a native of Jefferson County, was a member of the Mitchell United Methodist Church.
The funeral was April 14 at 11 a.m. at the Mitchell Full Gospel Holiness Church with the Revs. Tony Key and Jacky Downs officiating. Burial was in the Mitchell City Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Sandy "Angel" Johnson; and two sons, Brad and Kevin Johnson, all of Gibson.

Selma "Bootsie" Perling
Mrs. Selma "Bootsie" Perling, 73, of Louisville died March 27, 2003.
Mrs. Perling was born and raised in Atlanta. She attended the University of Missouri and the University of Georgia, where she met her husband, Milton. They settled in Louisville where they opened and operated Perling's Department Store until 1986. She was a member of Congregation Agudath Achim in Savannah and the Business and Professional Women of Lousiville.
Graveside services were held March 30 at Greenwood cemetery with Rabbi E. Noach Shapiro officiating.
Survivors include her husband, Milton Perling; sons, Michael (Dora) Perling, and Lance (Rachel) Perling; and grandchildren, Lauren, Deborah, Emily and Anna, all of Atlanta.

Valerie M. Arnold
Mrs. Valerie M. Arnold, 63, of Gibson died Monday, April 14, 2003 at University Hospital.
Mrs. Arnold, a native of Long Branch, NJ, lived in Gibson for the past eight years. She was a homemaker and a member of Magnolia Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Amos Levie Arnold, and a daughter, Helen (Randy) Arnold Matthews.
The funeral was April 17 at the Beggs Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Loy Whitten officiating. Burial was in Magnolia Baptist Cemetery.
Survivors include a daughter, Pamela S. (William) Hart, Gibson; two sons, Michael W. (Barbara) Arnold Sr., Gibson, and Edward D. (Penny) Arnold, Thomson; two sisters, Helen Pastorini and Florence Tressler, New Jersey; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
